Novak has upgraded his arsenal. His FH and serve is superior. It might sound absurd but 2023 Novak would crush 2015 Stan
Yes, in fact 2023 Novak would beat 2015 Novak. That is an incredible thing to contemplate.
@@wahn10not necessarily
@@wahn10 i agree. and was thinking the same. and shows how hard it is to beat him today. ...
I don't know if he would "crush Stan" but like Gill said his game has certainly become much more disruptive for players like Stan who rely on rhythm to play their best tennis. 2015 Novak has 2023 Novak beat in fitness, backhand, and returns but 2023 Novak has the mental edge, forehand, and serve (just better all round game). I'd love to see that matchup.
That’s what separates the Big 3 from the rest. They evolve. All three of them improved with time.l by adding weapons to their arsenals.
I think the fact that Novak was trying to beat the clock, particularly in the third set, had an effect in his level dropping. That coupled with Stan raising his level, made for a much tighter set.
Exactly.
That’s so interesting
Novak in the 2015 FO didn't have a rest day and in the 2016 us open final,he already was playing with that elbow injury
I think that 4th round against Hurkacz is going to be more challenging than potential quarterfinal against Rublev or Bublik. Hurkacz is a grass court specialist, has all the skills necessary for the surface.
What Gill said is absolutely right on about Novak giving Wawrinka too much rhythm in those big grand slam matches from 2014 to 2016. And not disrupting it enough. It's one of the biggest reasons that Stan almost never beat Federer. Federer could constantly switch it up against Stan and keep him guessing. It's something that Djokovic has definitely gotten better at.
I was always puzzled how dominant Federer was against Stan. They both had the one hander, but Stan seemed to have more juice on the serve and groundies. Federer was just cold blooded I guess. No sympathy for a fellow Swiss. Not very neutral.
@@hobbes4583 If there is a tennis player that defines the psycopath mentality, that's Roger. No sympathy, no mercy.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 I like "the Swiss Psycho" better than "the Federer Express"
Been waiting for this! Just want to give a big tip of the hat to Stan. What an inspiration - and love that he (and Andy and Venus) continue to play the game because they just love it so much. Stan was funny in his press conferences and interviews going into the match, and Djokovic made nice comments about him after the match. No one expected Stan to win, but he really got hot in the 3rd set and it was something to watch to see his firepower against Novak's defense (and his own firepower). Stan could have folded, but he put in the effort and made it a super fun 3rd set.
Don't like Venus playing..too many wildcard.. Hate wildcard in general especially when they have been handed so many times . Understand when players are coming off injury but do not like idea of players stealing someone's spot out of privilege given
Totally 💯👏👏
@@prabesh8277 I think we can give her a bit of a pass for now if it's only in Slams.
Navratilova kept competing until she was 1 month shy of 50 and she won the USO mix doubles championship in her last match.
I've enjoyed the "oldies" playing together once again. If Stan had been able to find his game early, this could've been more uncomfortable for Nole..not enough to win, but more uncomfortable.Go Nole! 🎉
If you're oldies retired is good for you Stan ,you play is weak Novak still motivation positive and 2 slam this year AO beat.sitipos and RG beaten Ruud is saw.novak is greatest than next gen on 36 yrs,......congrat Novak brettini , kgrious final Wimbledon,Thein and.medved final AO ,v.but Federer ,Nadal????? One of your finest analyses: each of you weaving in and out seamlessly with striking observations - like the violinist, violist and cellist in a Beethoven string trio.
Impossible to count the many perceptive comments the Three of you made - but I single out Amy’s and Gil’s assessment of Hurcacz which was clinical, though points to Joel for his evaluation of HH and K Anderson as “linear”. Linear equations are the simplest to solve in algebra.
Looked at another way, Stan’s peak occurred around age 30, likely very close to the mean for the top players historically. On the other hand, Novak’s peak, despite many apparent peaks (2011, 2015, 2020) has yet to be determined as his performance level amazingly continues to improve. So Novak may be the “fat tail” of tennis player statistical distributions - in other words, a black swan.
Superb comment. And I also loved Joel's labelling of Anderson and Hubi as "linear" players. There are definitely players who stand out in that way - predictable, so easier in a way to beat once you solve the (simple) equation. I think Tommy Paul's coach has been trying to get him to break out of that mold, telling him to think of tennis as an art more and try to be like Picasso (or smth like that). This is one of Tommy's top weaknesses still, though, imho - too linear and too prone to default patterns and shots. Again, he has great hands and skill (like Hubi) and would love to see him learn to play more creatively and keep climbing the rankings.
Novak 2011 was unbeatable unless he made too many unforced errors, especially compared to winners, aka, "bad" day. Novak 2011 was something else.
great comment.....black swan....i'll remember that
I like your math approach
YEAH! Wimby-23 after 3 rounds round-up! Novak & Stan was a throwback delight! That 3rd set was very competitive until Mr. Clutch got to the tiebreaker. The Gumby-Spiderman in Nole's game is sublime especially @ Wimby. Think Hubie might get a set, but Novak in 3 or 4 against Hurkacz. Wimby-22 it was Nick K. Wimby-23 it's Carlitos for the challenge. Novak also closing rallies with many fewer shots these days. Agree with Gill that Nole's arsenal and toolbag have expanded & improved so Nole 2023 might very well have beaten prime Stan @ some of those losses to Wawrinka. Props to Andy & Stan for being such later-years up-leveled players and making this Wimby-23 a very special one for thaese reasons alone! Thanx Joel, Gill & Amy. Cheers, Milan
Love you guys !!..always looking forward to seeing 👀 your podcasts
Thank you so much 😊
Joel's words "wall of impregnability". I love it
Love your content guys!! Never stop!!

Loved the Thompson game. His volleying reminded me of his compatriot, Pat Rafter. Such a breath of fresh air watching that match.
Took me back to some of those Agassi vs Rafter encounters at SW19.
Hubi doesn't have those volleying skills but he should work on it.
I completely agree with Gil on why Wawrinka presented a difficult matchup for Djokovic. I think that's why Nadal and Federer didn't have as much of a problem against Wawrinka. The top spin from Nadal and the slices and net charges of Federer just disrupted Wawrinka's matches so he couldn't hit from his strike zone. I believe that's why Gasquet has a good record against Wawrinka too. Though the style is completely different, I think that's why Medvedev plays better against Djokovic than Nadal too, because Djokovic gives him more rhythm without pulling him out of his comfort zone. Although I'm the biggest Djokovic fan, I have to say that back in the 2011-16 era, he was relying on his ability instead of his strategies. He has learned a lot about how to win by disrupting opponent's rhythm rather than trying to get himself into a baseline rally rhythm all the time. That's why he has more wins where he barely hit winners post-2018 than before. He added this new way to win, despite how great he already was. That's why he's the GOAT.
As a huge Stan the Man fan, I love Joel using the word "ferocious" to describe the Stanimal backhand in full flow. Stan is the reason why I have a one-handed backhand, and all my tennis friends and I love seeing him on tour.
hi Gill, Amy and Joel, I also think regarding Novak vs Wawrinka matches of 2014-2016 in slams where Novak was giving rhythm to Stan and didn't disrupt his game also Goran as coach has added new dimension or Novak himself evolved into a much better player. Today's version of Novak would have easily defeated best version of Stan 2014-16 . Novak is more complete player than he ever was.
No one can stop Nolet 🏆🐐❤️🔥🇷🇸
Amy's smile..I love it...I feel the same too
I just checked the Federer vs Wawrinka head to head. Federer was 18-0 against Stan on hardcourts and grass.
And on clay?
L 5-3 Fed
Stunning. That’s a great stat
Wow Novak getting through players like Cachin, Thompson and Wawrinka. He is looking in for a real shot to win this.
The answer to your question Gill about how Stan beat Novak on the way to his three slam titles, is that at AO 2014 Stan won in a close match of the rerun from the previous year where Novak won a similar match 12:10 in the fifth, so a narrow victory but certainly deserved. In Paris, Novak was tight because he tried too many times to win the RG and didn't succeed, so he tightened up, Stan played fantastically and stepped up when he needed to, and at the end UO 2016, Novak was already dragging his injured elbow that he refused to operate, let me remind you that already in the next AO 2017 he lost in the second or third round to Istomin...
I'm someone who has followed Novak since his earliest days and Stan has always been a tough opponent for Novak, and even though Novak beat him regularly and it was at the point before Stan's AO 16:03 wins for Novak in their HtH, all those wins were almost always close. . Stan always seemed like someone who was capable of beating Novak but somehow always lost, and I think he had flashes where he played really great tennis with the best one-handed backhand on the tour.
Novak looks to be in peak shape, fit, laser-focused, he's moving great, great groundstrokes, he seems to be really hammering the forehand like never before, and he seems to have improved his overhead smash........ all this at the age of 36, amazing athlete. 4 more Nole..........☝☝☝💪🦾👍🙏
Yes, spot on.
I would favor Hubi over almost anyone at Wimbledon, and he's playing a bit like he did in 2021 when he got to the SF and then ran into a red-hot Berrettini. And, frankly, Djokovic said right after the match today what is so difficult about him - his tremendous serving, and his long arms (and good hands) that make it so hard to pass him at net. I immediately thought that Hubi should take note of that and have the confidence to come to net more. IN GENERAL, I think Hubi would do better throughout the year if he came to net more. He's really good at it, and as Gill points out, his forehand is a major problem in baseline rallies and one that I think players have learned to pick on (quite like the case with Coco Gauff on the women's side).
Despite being one of the best grass court players in the world, if he plays his normal game, Djokovic will have an easy match. All Djokovic has to do ("all") is get more serves back than most people, and then target that forehand hard in rallies. Hubi will be "easy" to break here and there in that case. And it will again be so hard for Hubi to break Djokovic - again, especially because of that forehand weakness. I think Hubi's only chance would be to come to net obsessively - including on return. But how likely is that to happen? And even if he did do that, he doesn't do it enough throughout the year to do it successfully for 3/5 sets against Djokovic.
It's probably as hard of 3R match as he could get, but I can't see Hubi having a chance. May win 1 or max 2 sets on nearly perfect serving and if Djokovic lapses for a service game or two. But even that is unlikely.
Oh, I just got to the end where Gill nicely emphasizes the free coaching advice to become a net rusher. :D The question is: how is this not something he and his team have decided to do/try? Should Gill become an ATP coach? (Full disclosure: I think he could. :D)
@@ZacharyShahan It won't happen overnight.
Zach u mean R4
Nice. Nole-hurkacz is 4R though not 3R
Before playing the match a told my freind . Djokovic will mostly be the dominant player in that match facing Stan obviously because he's more complete today than the earlier days you can talk about his mental thoughness serve tactical aproach and momentum just mazing to see that increadible evolution and how he grown beatifuly takink care of his body and keep leveling up so effectively !!! i will praise his serve in those last years and maybe that's what help Novak to extend his carreer and be so longetive .
Stan is a player where if you allow him time to wind up, he will blow you out of the court with his raw power, and that was what he did in those 3 matches in the past against Novak. That is also why Stan doesn't do well on grass where the game's much faster. Roger for example, with his aggressive tennis and hitting on the rise, never allowed Stan that luxury of time and always rushed Stan. It is no coincidence that Roger's three losses against Stan (Roger-Stan's head-to-head is 23-3!) all came on clay where the bounce is much slower and Stan can wind up and unleash all that power. 14:33 14:34
Novak vas hurt at the end of 2016 us open.
novak had blood in shoes in us final......it showed on tv during the final......i remember him crying out "don't you see"
I’ve got a content request…
There was obviously a big 3 and if we’re calling it a big 4 then you’d include Murray. Perhaps Stan if a big 5.
My question for analysis on here is: if you were doing a ‘big ten’ list of the biggest and best rivals to the big 3, who would make the list? 😊
There is only the big one. The rest have been left in the dust
@@jonathanstirling7167 best cancel the podcast then 🤣
There was, according to me, a very specific reason Wawrinka beat Djokovic thrice at majors.
Amy, Stan did not have the set on his racket.
You are forgetting the GOAT by a big margin with the best return of serve ever by a big margin was on the other side of the net.
The only reason Stan won that 2015 FO is because Novak had to play Andy five sets over two days; whereas Stan dispatched Roger in three easy sets.
Amy if if if
Three times or two
Ms. Lundy’s name is still truncated. May I ask why?
Stan is a great guy and tennis player, but he needs to lose weight if he intends to compete at this level.
Alot of comments here with people getting carried away with Djokovic's level. While its impossibly high esp considering his age, he is not better overall than he was in 2015. Fans and media made the same mistake with Federer in 2017 asking if that was the best Federer version when it wasn't even close to Federer's peak.
Jason yup now u got media saying Djokovic 1st serve is the best we have ever seen like Imao
Not better but more efficient.
Fed 2017 was the best version of Fed. You can cry as much as you like about his 2003-2007 weak era, but skill wise, 2017 was his best tennis.
@@colethomas903It is the best he served. Only thing where he isnt at his best is his stamina and maybe a little bit of his athletic ability is lacking and a bit of that 2011 power. But for 36, Djokovic is the most complete.
I wish Amy would stop txting and pay attention.
The intense stare, finger to the head is a real put-off for many tennis fans. As is scaring his box with angry outbursts. Makes djoko look a bit unsympathetic and off. The photo just reminds me of that and why crowds often don't favor the poor fella ha.

Just goes to show, how weak the men's draw is without Novak. One or two injuries, withdrawals, absentees and we are scratching the barrel for worthy opponents for Novak. The Stan match was the epitome of this - we were reduced to watching one of the past sell by date old guard hoping against hope versus Novak, was never even going to be close. Murray is another one , watching him lumbering around , losing to a clay specialist and the stupid British crowd thinking he did well. Just desperate.
people only remember Novak's loses to Wawrinka but forget the H2H is 22 - 6 in Novak's favour.
20-6 heading into today’s match. But 4-4 in majors, including a 4-1 record in favor of Stan in the past 5 meetings in those majors. That being said, given their recent and current forms, nobody seriously expected Stan to win today’s match.
