I've never clicked on a video so fast!!
Well hello madame!!
I love you guys!
PinkMetalHead reactception
That's because you have experienced the DT rabbit hole and are already too deep to ever return...so seeing others go down the rabbit hole is great stuff eh? Now you know how we felt when you first came across DT : )
PinkMetalHead good to see you here, I'm glad they reacted to this.
ONe of the funny things about this reaction is that they seem to think that Devin is super-confident and cocky. I don't think I've ever seen another "rock star" who was so openly insecure as Devin Townsend. Devin makes fun of himself mercilessly. His self-deprecating humor is one of the reasons his fans love him so much.
for sure,he seems super cocky on stage but thats his personality hes just being fun and funny and loving life, super humble guy and great human being...
It just goes to show what a good showman he actually is.
Yeah, he's actually a really humble and personable kinda dude. I saw him play an acoustic set in Manchester and like 40% of the show was him chatting with the crowd, telling jokes, getting people involved in the songs and just chilling. Which is ok, because that's kinda why you go to see Devy play in the first place. Cool guy.
But dude, that IS his on-stage personality. Of course he does it to disguise his insecurity and emotional/mental health issues. But that IS his persona.
Separately, also, from a body language standpoint, they're right: when it comes to owning his musicality, he is very comfortable, confident, and even relaxed. He knows how good he is, even if he simultaneously harbors doubts and reservations.
“Most epic solo in EMGtv history!”
4 notes with a wawa pedal; funny dude.
I’m not sure people realize he was joking.
I know right I was like I could play that
I don't know how anybody could not get that
Been watching reaction videos to this all morning and non-guitar players Haven't known he's being sarcastic, it's kinda funny. I mean, EMG is a guitar pickup manufacturer, and Devy is a guitar god... adherents know to expect a fun time.
Well he was right though. Wasn't it the first solo in EMGtv.
People who don't get that have no clue about music.
So there's actually a good story to this song. He recorded it once before on an earlier album, while he was in the depths of drug abuse and alcoholism, and in that song he was talking specifically about a relationship. After this, he recorded four albums; Ki, Addicted! Ghost and Deconstruction that speaks in depth about his struggles and eventual victory over his previous lifestyle. After this project, which spawned his current band, he recorded the album Epicloud in which he released a new and updated version of Kingdom. In this version, he's speaking directly to the fans that stayed with him throughout it all, reassuring them that he's fine and that he once again has control over his life.
The story he tells over the course of his work is really inspiring.
One of the great things about Devin Towsend is his sense of humor ---he was being sarcastic about it being "the best guitar solo" ever. He makes jokes a lot and makes fun of himself. If you ever get a chance to see him live, DO IT. I saw Devin Towsend, Opeth & Gojira on the same tour at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado ---fucking AMAZING.
Hyena Womyn I was at that show too!! Such a great night for all 3 bands and so inspiring!! (but I wished dtp got a little more time so they could play “higher” like they did on their headlining show I saw the week before) \m/
I was there too! that concert was incredible. the first I'd heard of DTP and I can't stop listening now!
I was there too!
Exactly! While the guitar solo was fast, it certainly wasn't the most difficult guitar solo. It was AWESOME!
I saw DTP and Clutch on NYE 18, and it was transcendent
He's not cocky. That's just his sense of humor. Super humble guy. Loving guy.
Yup he’s clearly joking because it was actually the third take. When the “epic” solo comes he mentions he messed it up the last take.
He's not cocky even though he kinda has the right to be with that level of talent. Haha.
With regards to your question: He composes and produces everything himself, but he has a live backing band he records and tours with. Boy is self taught as well. His entire back catalogue is legendary material.
I don't get a cocky vibe from Devy at all though; confidence surely, but very humble dude with a good head on his shoulders. Shook hands with him once, nice guy.
I think I'd characterize his attitude a bit more as being comfortable with the niche(s) he's carved for himself, and he's having fun with it. In a business where a lot of people take their image as Serious Business (e.g. the Norwegian Black Metal "scene" through the 1990s), seeing Devin treating his audience like equals who are just there to enjoy the show with him is really refreshing!
Pietyr Ayday Yeah, the few lines at the start of the video is imo purely for comedic reasons. Nothing about cocky attitude at all :D
he's hillarious and sarcastic to cover up the fact that he's uncomfortable. Been listening to devy since steve vai gave him a shot. He's great, way underrated and he's comfortable living in obscurity. They won't get that but they gave him some serious exposure which is all that counts
"Does he play all the instruments?" - He composes all of the music and he "can" play them but he has a band to play the parts and will get musicians to play on his albums/etc. He is the mastermind/creator/writer/producer/composer of it all though.
Another thing I really like about Devin Townsend is that his screams are so musical. He is actually singing a pitch during his scream. He also does it brilliantly in a few other songs. Even though I love death metal and some black metal, this type of screaming just gives me the chills like nothing else.
There's a great video on here of a vocal coach analysing this performance and he mentions this. His distortion is completely unforced. Just takes his great clean voice and adds some vocal fry on top of it with no strain at all.
Did you mean: ua-cam.com/video/uE-nm97NkRg/v-deo.html
I know this is an old video, but I really admire his humor and his magnificent way of story telling. March of the Poozers really pulled me in, because that song actually *feels* like you're stomping around in a giant mech. I've had the pleasure of seeing him live, a while a go and everything is just so enjoyable. Even the awkward bit between the warm-up act and the actual act, had this pretend-radio station running through the speaker, voiced by Mr. Townsend himself, through a bunch of characters. Took a stab at some popular culture here and there.
The man's a genius on the instruments he plays and he sure loves to play. And it's not just his screaming, it's his thick, quick and heavy riffs that really makes me want to kick some Poozer ass.
Yeah he's on another level as a vocalist, the strained faces he makes during the screams are just for show, he's actually completely relaxed while doing those epic vocals.
Letter Kenny, AVE.
Discovered Devin this weekend on UA-cam have been obsessed over the past couple of days. Definitely added to the list
I'm from Australia BTW.
He doesn't play all the instruments when recording, but until the last album he used to compose everything.
Here are some things to help you better understand Devin Townsend:
1. He's been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and he has been open about it.
2. He has 2 full albums dedicated to a story about an alien trying to take over earth with the mission of finding the best cup of coffee. Ziltoid the omniscient and Z2 dark matters.
3. Please see a picture of his look (specially hair) while playing in strapping young lad.
4. He started his career singing for Steve Vai.
5. This... www.metalinjection.net/av/devin-townsend-orchestrated-a-giant-group-hug-during-his-wacken-open-air-set
I would also suggest you guys check out the band. Diablo Swing Orchestra, they are not as heavy but they blend almost every genre of music you can imagine. I would probably strat by listening to either Voodoo Mon Mour, A Tap Dancer's Dilemma or Blarog Boogie.
Y'all need some Avant-Garde Metal in your life haha.
Don’t forget when he shoved Jay Leno’s phone in his ass.
He's also Canadian, which was another thing he had to overcome.
He did play everything in the first SYL álbum. Except the drums, he use a software to program the drums. But he made everything by himself. And i'm not sure, But i think that in city, he did record everything, Except drums, when Gene join the band. I think, again, not sure, that the other members only join after the recording. When he start playing live. They are already included in the inlay of the recording as part of the band, But i think that they don't record anything
Mox, he said sorry.
He's ABSOLUTELY comedic in his intentions. Anything that came off as cockiness here was him trying to make a joke. He made an entire album about an alien that comes to earth and will destroy it unless he is given the best cup of coffee on the planet. His music video for Vampira is the most intentionally campy yet hilarious video I've seen. He doesn't take it too seriously haha.
Lol! What album is that?
Ziltoid the Omniscient
ua-cam.com/video/S6P5eT90FVI/v-deo.html
The album Deconstruction is largely a parody of prog metal, too. Definitely doesn't take himself too seriously.
Tommy Farnsworth - it's the same every time someone watches this vid. He was being sarcastic because he messed it up twice, but for those who don't know the song already. You can see is their face that they are gutted they didn't see a solo.. I alway feel sorry for them..
How Voldemort would've turned out if only Dumbledore had showed up to the orphanage with a guitar.
Some one needs to do a deepfake of this video with voldermort's face
One of the best comments I've ever read. Thankyou man
Devin "who shall not be named" Townsend
I'm dead. Abra Cadabra
You should have him on your show. He is the nicest, most humble and hilarious dude ever. Plus, Gojira loves him.
Ive met him, i concur, he's such a humble, cool, kind, generous person. His joking 'arrogance' is just part of a really lovely person. Who has had his struggles and used them for forces of good (music) one of my hero's
He's very humble, kind, funny.
I got to witness him fart into a mic once
He does a lot of his instruments for his demos, but he has a proper band for his recordings (such as this) and for touring.
what about that strapping young lad?
If I recall Ziltoid was all him.
The_Misanthrope he isn't the only guy in metal who does that Peter Tatgteren can play all the instrumenrs and does for one of his side projects, although not a full technical master he is more than good enough. While also being one of the more popular producers in Sweden.
Waiting on "Deadhead" Live at Royal Albert Hall!
+1 for that
Put it on the poll!
I'm waiting too
It's driving me crazy they haven't reacted barely to anything from him.
I add another +1000 Devin Points to that
Don't know if you guys are aware, but the band actually shared this on their facebook!
It's funny because Devin Townsend is actually a pretty humble dude, he just likes to joke around a lot.
Great vid!
He's an awesome musician and an hillarious comedian. He's so sarcastic, like that guitar solo is stupidly simple, and that's why he said it's the most impressive solo ever. I've seen him live 5 times, and he always cracks jokes, he's so freaking humble. Love that dude.
Yeah that's why it kind of bugged me that they were saying he's cockey and stuff. He doesn't really think he's better than anyone that's just his comedy.
Yeah the reason he said it was my first take not third was because he was joking and it was actually his third take.
Well, it is their first time watching anything to do with Devin. I'm sure if they took more time to watch some interviews or more live shows, they'd instantly know that he isn't cocky, just goofy.
Dude could easily moonlight as a standup comedian. Fucking easily
"He can really sing" understatement of the century.
This is about as good as it gets for vocals anywhere in the world in any genre of music.
Having met Devin in person, he is one of the most down to earth dudes you will ever meet! So dedicated to his fanbase. :)
Fabian Lelo he most certainly is! I'm super short so he squatted down for a picture I took with him. 😂 He's hilarious and so down to earth.
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Or Bleak. The Moor would be great too.
Or Ghost of Perdition, a classic to start on. Also I feel like they'd really like the grooviness of Ghost of Perdition
Ghost of Perdition, Moonlapse Vertigo, Bleak ... so many to choose from!
Any of those ahah but bleak... :D
Not that song. It's an amazing song, but not a good introduction. Ghost of Perdition is the best introduction.
FYI. He was being sarcastic about it being the most epic solo in EMGtv history since it was a simple solo but he is a serious shredder, he used to play with Steve Vai.
Next you guys must so OPETH!!!! You will be blown away by the transitions more than any metal song yet..
I know he was joking but at the same time wasn't this basically the first EMGtv solo?
There is nothing more metal than Devin Townsend
Curtis Marta devy metal...
FAR BEYOND METAL ua-cam.com/video/GLucWiyBsJk/v-deo.html
Sometimes less is better. More like Metallica would sound better to me, because the structure of the song, seems to me, is lost in the noise.
Canada:
Beer
Hockey
Rush
Devin Townsend
You’re welcome.
Scott Kitchingman
Not necessarily in that order.
Ricky, Julian, Bubbles
hackshadows, I was about to say that. lol
Celine dion, Justin Bieber, the Ford brothers. For every up there's a down...
Fucking Sebastian Bach!
My heart raced when I logged onto youtube and saw this video! Had butterflies in my stomach the entire time! I've been posting 'Devin Townsend' on almost all your metal reaction videos! haha
Me too lol, I wouldn't be surprised if the hundreds of requests came from like 10 people haha
cinlocybin me too🤣
Finally!
Alan Stinchfield He made a bigger name for himself in Strapping Young Lad years back. Slowly building the DTP name the last 10 years. I would say he was the greatest artist most ppl never heard of for a period of time 😀
Sin I'm at the guy's got talent but he's really cloney and kind of generic compared to what I grew up with I'm out of 80s
I don't know if the guys like Michelangelo bottaio that does solo stuff Dream Theater all kinds of other bands I just don't see how he sticks out so much maybe you can explain it to me
Compared to the rock gods that founded metal that I grew up on I just don't see it just honest opinion 😋
The most remarkable thing about watching Devin playing his ass off with confidence and joy is knowing that he came from years of struggle with substance abuse and the mental health issues that comes with that and has now risen above those circumstances. Watching the brilliance of his playing, and the expressions of love of and confidence in what he is doing is very life affirming. Great, humble guy and a master of his craft.
No joke he gave me inspiration to change my life for the better
Dev's come a long way. He deserves his success.
Devin Townsend is a super cool guy. I've met him multiple times and he's always really, really nice. I also met beav (bass) and Ryan (drums) and talked to them for about 20 minutes. All absolutely fantastic people to meet and nerd out with!
I couldn't agree more. My experiences were totally the same.
For whatever reason I never heard of Devin township project I love that two non metal fans introduced a fan of metal to d.t.p. nothing better then going through a new artists catolog thank you guys. Keep up the awesome work. Much L&R
township? smh.........
Your in luck, there are like 28 albums to look through! 😂
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devin_Townsend_discography
never heard of this man prior to this but wow! this was bomb! 😳👏🏽
Tierra Hudson So awesome that you enjoyed it! Ive been such a big fan for years. It’s so cool they did this.
yeah it was cool! i liked it.
Devy is the greatest musician alive and despite the fact that he knows how good he is (as pointed out by the Lost In Vegas guys), he's a very humble, honest, and friendly human. I've met him several times and it's legit. He's just a crazily talented guy that loves music.
Check out his albums: Addicted, Epicloud and Deconstruction; just wonderful stuff. He's got a crapton more, but those are the ones I get stuck on. And the song Vampira from Synchestra. X'D
alphaenemy yeah the fact he can back up how great he really is, it’s kinda awesome! i am considering so more stuff from him!
FYI, he normally plays with a full band. What you've watched is an EMG product showcase, (EMG makes active pickups for guitars commonly used by metal bands) with a focus on the guitar and the installed "EMG 81" and "EMG 66" pickups.
Guys thank you for sharing this content you guys are one of my favorite channels on UA-cam! I’m a pretty seasoned metal head and all around appreciator of music in general, but I’ve actually learned about a lot of new artists I like by watching your channel so thank you guys! It’s also worth noting how much intelligence, patience, humility, sense of humor, and charisma you guys both have to be able to do a channel like this. Seriously speaks volumes about both of you as people. I wanna be more like you guys!
Thank you for featuring Devin Townsend... this dude is probably the most talented guy ever. So worth the love you have shown!!!
Kinda funny that he's actually the complete opposite. He even said himself he's doing the self depricating and humorous stuff because he's kinda insecure. He's a super humble down to earth guy and pretty much the opposite of the "I-know-I'm-so-good-dude".
Can confirm. Dev is the most humble, self-deprecating musician I have ever met.
Was going to say the same. And not at all classically trained vocally. Quote Dev “it’s by sheer will power” Amazing talent.
He is super laid back and humble, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know he's good. Anyone with Devin's skill will naturally emit a level of macho badassery purely by having a natural level of comfort and execution with limited effort.
Yeah all that bravado is a kind of Andy Kauffman schtick that’s so much fun. I love how good and goofy he can be at the same time.
Do DEADHEAD next!!!!! Live at Royal Albert Hall!! Please!
Yes please
More likes^^
Gojira did a song with this guy and Meshuggah's guitarist called "Of Blood and Salt"
OK. Almost two years. When are you going to react to more Devy?
Devin is the man, one of the best live shows I've ever seen, such great showmanship and the dude is also hilarious to boot.
I've never been through UA-cam comments for any channel more than Lost In Vegas - it started out as curiosity to see what people were suggesting but I'm now discovering so much cool shit, it's amazing! I'd never heard Opeth before and they are so fuckin good! Lot of love for Ghost of Perdition, I think the LIV guys will enjoy dissecting that one, but Deliverance, that ending is pure perfection. Just puts me in a trance every time I hear it. If it came to a vote, I'd go Deliverance, but either way, I think some Opeth should be on the agenda soon for our boys George and Ryan ;)
In fact, listening to it again now, it has to be Deliverance! That tune is fucking genius!!! From 9:38 onwards, I can see George's groove face already XD
Nice to see a new Opeth fan.
I discovered them 10 months ago and I don't really listen anything else anymore, every new band I discover are so inferior. It's suck.
Deliverance would be great, indeed, but it's gonna be Ghost Of Perdition
Was watching the EMG video and this was suggested. These guys are so charismatic and fun that I think that was the fastest subscribe I've had. Keep up the good work.
I absolutely LOVE watching reactions to this video. I only subbed up to you guys a couple years ago, so I missed out on this one until it popped up in my recommended today. instant click!
Devin Townsend is a legend for a reason. The man decided to live his life sober, but as a result had to re-learn how to write music without drugs. This song is a result of that, and the man's still got it. Fantastic dude, and fantastic muscician, really glad you're branching out to include stuff like this with your reaction videos. Love you guys and what you do!
Check out Avantasia - The Scarecrow
This song predates him giving up drink/drugs (the original was on his Physicist album) . The vocals on the Epicloud version (and the way he sings it live nowadays), are far better though.
And I think his live performances are a hell of a lot better these days, he can consistently hit the high-notes in a way that wasn't always true before. Not that his performances before were bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I think he's really improved since he quit the booze/drugs.
Bryan Robertson - so true mate..
Devin fronted a band call Strapping Young Lad...you guys would enjoy them as well. One song called "Love", that shit is epic!
oh yes.
With gene fuucking hoglan
Love would be good. Maybe Almost Again or Wrong Side, too!
The first S.Y.L album he played every instrument and then for the second album he formed a bestial band! Super talented band. He said many times that SYL was his way to drop all the rage inside him
Emiliano Lezcano and he was dealing with his bipolar disorder and drug use for the bulk of the time he fronted the band. Which is one of the reasons he gives for not wanting to ever revive the band, because that mindset is over and it would be contrived.
He does play all the instruments himself. I saw him perform live when he was still a teenager...he was the lead singer for Steve Vai's band! Not only a great singer, but you should really hear him shred on guitar...he was trading licks with Vai note per note and holding his own. Great talent!
I subbed. The fact that they actually give opinions during a video and also kinda make the video their own is awesome
Now for the logical progression, you both HAVE to check out Devin Townsend - Deadhead (Live at the Royal Albert Hall) ;)
Yup. That's where it needs to go next.
I. Love. Devin. This dude.....let me put this like this: I LOVE THIS MAN! Every time i listen to his stuff, I smile and smiling is outlawed in the metal community lol. He is a fucking goofball, a guru of sorts, pretty much a hippie and the mad scientist of metal (see strapping young lad). I think your comparison to Jamie Fox was pretty spot on. Musically, this dude has range, and I mean RANGE. Wanna listen to some heavy chaotic shit? Pop on Alien, or SYL or Deconstruction. Wanna listen to some introspective shit? How about Infinity, Synchestra or Accelerated Evolution. Perhaps some feel good pop metal? Spin Sky Blue, Addicted, or Epicloud (the song Grace is simply wonderful). Y’all like New Age music? Even if you don’t, spark a jay and listen to Ghost. Oh did I mention his dark “country” album where he shares vocal duties with the soulful Ché Aimee Dorval called Casualties of Cool? Yeah, he did that. This bold motherfucker put out four records in two years that all sound different. Yep, he did produce them all and handled most of the sounds and samples and instruments (except drums, he sucks at that but is pretty comfortable with a drum machine). Yep, he does all that shit and keeps it humble. Please, if you have a chance, see him live.
He also did a "fake" hardcore punk album under the name "Punky Bruster" (along with one "Cheesy Polish Death Metal" song under the name "Cryptic Coroner"), satirizing the silly fads and fashions, and the bandwagon-bands that thrive on goofy extreme music trends and gimmicks!
I take it Devin Townsend came from a relatively non-metal town in western Canada, and at some point decided that he wasn't going to win any beauty contests or get taken very seriously in the heavy metal business, so he adopted a sort of "zero-fucks-given" attitude and just does what he wants and has fun with the whole thing, clowning around like he did in the video - he's built up a pretty loyal following that way by word-of-mouth.
In regards to the guys' question in the video, I don't THINK Devin does the one-man-band thing, but there have been a number of metal bands that have (including Burzum, Bathory, Mortiis, Nicodemus, Aarni, Igorrr...), and I have a feeling Devin COULD do a one-man-band, if he wanted to. I believe most of the one-man-bands just record in home studios, and don't do touring or anything like that often (I think a couple of them have done the occasional live show with session or guest musicians).
I find the sound that Devin's bands usually use kind of weird - it's sort of a huge wall of sound at first, and kind of bewildering to hear, but then a lot of harmony and melody sort of find their way out of the mix, and it starts sounding rather beautiful. Even with the relatively calm and quiet "Casualties of Cool", I can hear some of the same aesthetic.
I have to come back to this video, and thank you guys for introducing me to DT. His music has been beyond instrumental in saving my life, no lie. I know this is supposed to be entertaining, which it is, but once in a while something magic happens. thanks for that
I knew of them, did some research and now I have a new favourite band. Even my wife was blown away
Lol, i love you guys. You recognize talent when you see it. Glad u finally checked this out.
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (and Deliverance and Bleak....)
Nothing from Still Life? SHame on you ... :P
How does this have only 212,965 views, when about 10 of those are mine? This is one of the greatest individual musical performances of all time, reviewed by the two best guys on the interwebs. Love you guys! More Heavy Devy!
So glad to find you guys! Devin fan from day one (Steve Vai days) and when I say Devin Townsend to people, I get "who?". When I get their attention and show them, it's like this video, but you two know what you're talking about.Just subscribed in hopes that you can introduce me to new music. Respect and peace friends.
Fun thing about Devin Townsend, I went to see him live a few years back, he sat down on the edge of the stage and waited for every single fan to come up and shake his hand before he got off the stage.
Love? By Strapping Young Lad. DO IT.
So the Lost In Vegas boys know, Strapping Young Lad was an older project of Devin Townsend's.
Yeah, "Detox" by SYL should be a great pick!
Oh, FUCK yes!
FUCKING DETOX! YES! Seriously one of the hardest songs ever written.
I love Strapping and have done for 20 years but I'm not sure if they would get it. Zen might be the song. I'd go for something off Accelerated Evolution.
Okay. Saw your YYZ vid yesterday and then today this one pops into my feed and I couldn’t hit PLAY fast enough! Devin Townsend is my favorite musician these days. He’s one of the hardest working people in the industry and is definitely as talented as you believe he is from viewing this vid. Not only that, he is an EXTREMELY KIND AND GRACIOUS INSIVIDUAL who has treated all of his fans (myself included) incredibly well over the years.
Just discovered Devy two days ago. Sad it wasn’t sooner. Great stuff. Great vid, guys.
I like you guys, I'm not a fan of most reaction videos but I like watching you guys listening to great stuff for the first time. I'm a lifelong metalhead and Devin is my all time favorite. His catalog is massive, you have a lot to look forward to. He's very self deprecating and very funny.
Since the early 90s, huge catalog.
Totally agree. He might be the most talented artist in music today. Yes I said it. He comes out with a new album almost every year. He tours extensively which includes serving as the mastermind of at least one elaborate live musical production every other year. His albums span virtually every genre (and they are all amazing in their own right). And he’s an awesome, hilarious, down to earth guy. Oh and in his spare time he develops side projects like the Casualties of Cool album he did with Ché. Last I heard he was in the process of writing 4 new albums concurrently. It’s insane. I recommend every music lover spend a couple years going down the Devin Townsend rabbit hole. To answer the question posed in the video, yes he plays all instruments but uses a drum machine. However, he often brings in musicians (currently the guys with him in DTP) to lay down the tracks he’s written in studio and obviously on tours. Up until recently he mixed most of his albums as well. I pray he blows up at some point in the future because the man deserves it more than anyone.
Devin Townsend - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall)
Christ, anything from that performance will work...Bastard is a good choice though!
This.... just this...
one of the greatest songs i have ever heard
Joseph Bastidas Yes!!!!
Yes, yes, YES! Best DTP performance ever. If that doesn't make you a fan you just flat out don't like DTP.
This was a good reaction video. Really cool. Devin is one of my favorites of this genre
It's been almost exactly a year since I first saw Devin on your channel. I can't imagine my world without his music in it. Devin is not of this world but sent to show us what Heaven is.
This is my favorite channel. Getting introduced to a lot of things ive never heard before. Love you guys all the way from Ireland
Chris O'Brien I like that name. You should see the Movie Kill the Irishman. If you are Irish I think you will like this movie. It a gangster movie a lot like goodfellas.Check it out if you can.I am American myself I was born a Mc Kay.Maybe one day I'll get to go to Ireland.
Excellent choice guys. You two are good examples of someone who not only hear, but listens to the music! One can easily tell you're true music lovers.
Most of the reaction channels iv'e come across do the opposite, which i feel is rather pointless.
You are the creme de la creme, so congratz ;)
I love that you're talking about truly mastering something while he's playing bar chords in Open C.
I have 2 devin tattoo's, seen that EMG video a million times, only recently found you guys and I'm so happy you like devin! :D
It's always fun to see someone having fun with their craft and not taking themselves so seriously all the time 😊
DT is far from cocky in real life, he has a stage persona that fits him and his tone, and it has evolved over the years from Strapping Young Lad to DTP and everything in between. Best way to describe him is he is self aware and tongue in cheek. He does usually have a direction for each instrument and might write what will be played, but I think the Ziltoid album is the only one where he "plays" every instrument, but the drums were synthetically done from a computer program dubbed "the drum kit from hell". Other than that, he is a master in the craft and process of writing, recording, editing and performing music live. He is also a master in the sense that he has tons of different styles that he is capable of writing. If you go down the Hevy Devy rabbit hole, you will find amazing things.
I'm rewatching this, 2 years later. Great reaction video!
Im convinced Devin came from another universe to give us the best music imaginable. His music and humor go hand in hand. Great review guys
Great episode guys, Devin is the real deal. And he has a terrific band that he plays with and works with a lot of musicians beyond the band as well. and although he made the joke about "the greatest guitar solo", devin is a bonafide guitar god. please check out more of his stuff!
Devin is love....Devin is life....
mmmm... That's a good song! So heavy and melodic, beautiful fusion. Also his voice is incredible. And he's Canadian, so points for that! You guys should watch the Video for Animals as Leaders - "CAFO" That one is a hard song.
James Coté Good call. + anything on the latest Animals as Leaders is brilliant!
Any animals as leaders! Tosin is amazing!
Do CAFO please!
yes please.....do it
Tosin Abasi is a fucking animal.
Damn, I just came across you two. Still watching all your videos. Awesome channel!
He actually can play many instruments except for the drums as far as I know. He even recorded the choir by stacking up multiple voice recordings. Devin Townsend is famous for this so called "Wall of Sound". He is also considered a musical genius by many famous artists.
So awesome that this video finally popped up after all the requests (including several from me!).
I'll be giving you guys some background about my favorite musician, since you asked so nicely:
Devin plays everything except the drums. For the last couple of years he has been very much into bass after focussing on vocals and guitar for over two decades. To me, he seems like a really sensitive person (probably where the talent comes from) and he's had a lot of psychological troubles that he talks about openly. He used to have bipolar symptoms and anxiety problems, but he's doing better and has aged incredibly well as a musician. It is very interesting how his entire musical catalog is a timeline of his emotional development and maturation. He has had a couple of bands in which he is the centerpiece, each one with a bit of a different focus. The guys in his current band have been with him for quite some time and sometimes they record some of the instruments that he's able to play himself too on the albums, while he also sometimes records them himself. But yeah he indeed does guitar, vocals, bass and keys.
This was the tip of the Devin Townsend iceberg though. This is like his theatrical masterpiece, but the dude also has some really deep and moving emotional songs from back in the day when he was struggling quite a bit more (Deadhead and Death of Music are two examples (hint hint)). He also did some very relaxed, almost meditational stuff, man he even made a great bluegrass album just a few years back. Oh and also quite a few absolutely insane super-aggressive black/death-ish albums in his darker past.
He's a good example of a person with a really vivid and sensitive mind that has given him both some great creative and expressive advantages, but also fucked up his mental health really badly when he was younger. One of the most interesting musicians out there imo. His openness about his issues really makes people understand the depths of his music even better and conquered the heart of many a fan.
Devin Townsend is truly a master of music. Each one of his songs conveys an emotion that is so beautiful and you can feel. If you guys maybe wanna watch more of him maybe on your own time, I suggest Death of Music live at the Royal Albert Hall. So beautiful.
Korey J Death of Music is definitely one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard.
Korey J - Good Shout..
Man! I don't like reaction videos and I had zero faith in the video, but you guys did a great job and your judgement is very balanced and unbiased! Love you!!
Everyone's talking about Devin, rightfully so, he's extraordinarily masterful indeed, and lets not forget the masterful Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan on the kit. 👏🏻🎉
Only for Strapping though. This would've been Ryan Van Poederooyen. Another incredible drummer.
I've never subscribed to a channel so fast in my life. Great reactions my dudes! Devin Townsend is a God!
My god there’s a thousand Opeth requests
😂
harlequin forest is right!
Opeth sucks
Ghost of Perdition is the overwhelming request. I think it'd be an awesome Opeth song for them to delve into
Ghost is a great song but I feel that Harlequin shows more range
Loved the commentary. I feel the same way about him. Just heard of him this week. What an amazing talent.
Love what you guys are doing. Bridging the musical knowledge gap. Keep it up.
Today, we've lost Warrel Dane, 48 years old and INCREDIBLY talented singed. He did some Opera. He used to sing in Nevermore (with Jeff Loomis, on guitar, an awesome guitarist that Dave Mustain didnt hired back in time because he was too young, 16 years old only ! The man told him that he would go far). I recommend you guys to listen to Nevermore, try especially "This Godless Endeavor", the song, or even "Born", these 2 are awesome. I would really like to know your impressions about this, probably some people here know Nevermore, probably many don't. I bet it would be a good discovery.
Rip Warrel Dane : 07-03-61 / 13-12-17, my fav. singer ever.
Jérémy Lafosse damn man i was not aware he passed away! What a shame. RIP. Another one of them greats that we no longer will have the chance to see perform! At least his music will stay with us, at least for as long as the internet stays neutral...
Total treat of a video! Devin Townsend is a beast, and hilarious. I'm glad you guys watched a video and got to see how good of a performer he is. And really, there are a ton of metal artists that are great performers like this. And plenty that have a great varied vocal performance like this too. You guys just keep choosing great stuff, whether obscure, popular, or inbetween. Keep it up!
Next up Opeth - Reverie/Harlequin Forest
or
Mastodon - Oblivion
...please?
Great vid and channel would love to see more devin reactions.
Love this< I love what you are doing here.
Yesss after suggesting many times in your comments yall finally did it! Haha 🤘🏼
Dimebag Darrell Your a ghost And I miss you.One awesome guitarist!
Opeth - Bleak
Animals as Leaders - CAFO
Mahen Azrael If they're going to listen to AAL, go with The Woven Web first.
Everyone may not realize it but it takes balls and humility to get out of your comfort zone and open candidly to new universes. Rock on guys.
He does not play the drums, but he's a multi-instrumentalist and will often compose and arrange most of the instruments in his songs. This specific live performance he had a backing track, but you guys should watch some of the suggestions from the comment section. Loved the reaction.
You nailed it about him having a comedic element. He likes to goof off a lot, especially live, but his songs are full of sarcasm. That's what makes them great in my opinion
CHHEeeeEEEsssEEEBuuurrrRRRGGggeeERRrrr
Vegas and Devin? Instant Dopamine. Love you guys!
Beau Cardwell I love YOU! 😘
Brandon Hagler 😍
You've also found your way here, I see?! Yeah, this channel is great!
Beau Cardwell - your still the best mate 👍🏻🤘🏻
LOVE?
Damn, how is it that they've only done one Devin Townsend reaction? He has so many amazing songs in different styles.
I miss strapping young lad :(
Truer words have never been spoken
Sames
Please watch Deadhead - Live From Royal Albert Music Hall
or maybe something from the Ziltoid albums to see more of his humor
Kris Owens that video is nothing short of brilliant.
RIGHT?!
Good call, either Deadhead or anything from the last three songs off of Biomech. Those are right up there too.
George - Do you think you've mastered anything in your life, like ONE thing that you've
mastered ?
Ryan - Fuckin up
Lmaoooo Ryan deadass said that hahahaha love it man. I thought the energy and confidence that Devin brought into the song was dope and gave it another dimension when you hear that he is confident in his abilities. I too would like to know if he played the other instruments and also that he has a good vocal range of the melody and scream. Great video and Ryan need to take a page from Devins confidence book lmao.
There are two studio album recordings of this song with different bands behind them. If the band he's in is playing the song live with him, he'll have them record their parts. I don't think he really started playing this live until the Epicloud album came out, though. The original recording was with the Strapping Young Lad lineup, but since the album was stylistically more progressive than Strapping, he called it Physicist, but they never toured under that name.
The _fuckin up_ line straight up killed me hahaha
No offense to Ryan, but I'm pretty sure I've fucked up way worse than him.
Ryan is all of us deep down inside lmao
Music is not a competition, lads. He is an entertainer and is having fun. There is nothing cocky or arrogant about him, he is an incredible dude. Even though he is technically good, he doesn't give a shit about that. He just wants to express something, like every artist.
My friend surprised me with a meet and greet with him for my birthday, before the show. It was myself, my friend and one other guy. Devin is one one of the kindest, most down to earth people. After talking to him for about 45 minutes, he signed everything for us and took pictures. This song (Kingdom) wasn't on their setlist for that night. I was standing at the front of the stage and he yelled down to me "what do ya wanna hear?!" Then they played it. NIGHT MADE! Beavis and Dave are awesome guys too!
Thanks guys! Been waiting for this video for a long time, you gotta check out his other stuff, especially Deadhead
Death - Spirit Crusher
Oooooow you know what you`re talking about bro...
I love death but you know they’re gonna hate the vocals. Even by death growl standards they’re a pretty acquired taste.
love this man so much and you guys reaction
There's the Devin Townsend Project band that he tours with.
This song is supposed to have a female vocalist singing "Stay/Play with me" part, but he sang it all for this gig since the guitar pickup company, EMG, was featuring just him.
Devin Townsend is super down to earth, never really took himself or "metal" in general very seriously, he tends to make fun of metal stereotypes from time to time.
Met him in Dallas Texas and that was probably the best night ever.
