The song is about an old lover and my best friend, Clyde Joseph Woodward III, "CJW". She wrote it after he passed away and I spread his ashes off the Lake Charles, Louisiana bridge. Rest In Peace, Clyde, I miss you everyday!
I love her voice. Like no one else. When you hear her, you know it's Lucinda. Great songwriter. Car Wheels is a perfect album, start to finish. What a Gal!
Lucinda is one of my favorite musicians. She sings from the heart. We need more like her and less of this commercial sound we're getting drowned with today
When I hear this song and the words 'Did an Angel whisper in your ear, I can't hold the tears back because it makes me think of my wife Annie who died suddenly of cardiac arrest. No last words, no goodbyes no chance to tell her how much I loved her, but I hope an angel helped guide her in the afterlife
So glad to have a fabulous collection of her music. She's wonderful with a unique voice. She smashes every track. Saw her gig in Glasgow a few years ago. She was fantastic. Hope she comes back sometime. 🙏
This is one of Americas greatist singer-songwriters, as original as it gets, prolific, powerful and gentle, and she rocks, hope more young folks discover her through UA-cam.
I'm not a fan of most modern Country-Western, but I make a rare exception with regards to Lucinda Williams -- her talent as a musician, singer and songwriter transcend genre!!
Lu is rollin' through my town, in early August 2018. Just got the tix tonight. Seen her once before at the Greek in LA, opening for John Fogerty. See her, if you ever get the chance-- she sings her heart out.
So perfect! From everybody, the slide guitarist, the backup singer and especially Lucinda Williams... obviously a heartfelt song about someone who died. "Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long, last moments?
This song will live forever - well, as long as there are people listening to songs. That radio crap will be gone next week. Some solace there... perhaps.
If you look at her gaze it is up and out. She doesn't sing TO us, only FOR us. She writes so well, the lyrics say it all. She doesn't seem to be interested in making us feel as though these are her feelings, rather, she wants us to feel what the song's characters are feeling. IMHO.
The song is about an old lover of hers, Clyde Joseph Woodward. She wanted to spread his ashes off the bridge in Lake Charles but was told it was not permitted. Apparently she did it anyway. Thus, 'now your home is in Lake Charles no matter what they say' line. I believe Clyde sufferd from depression, (run as far as you could go, did an angel whisper in your ear, take away your fear, in those black moments." ) and ultimately over came the fear of dying and did so.
He actually died of cirrhosis. She was on a plane from L.A. to see him before he went. She didn't make it in time. There are a couple of good articles written about the two of them, his passing, and the song he inspired. Sad tale.
Thanks for posting this, I love Lucinda, I've seen her a few times and always wanted to see her in my home town. Then after I paid for my holiday this year she announced she was playing Liverpool, the day after I went away - I was gutted, hope she comes back
The two players flawlessly accompanying her here are also in the 1998 ACL band, John Jackson playing slide on the resonator and Jim Lauderdale singing harmony. They all look younger here.
I'm not sure but I think this is about her friend/songwriter Townes Van Zandt who died of substance abuse shortly before the "Car Wheels" was recorded. I think "Drunken Angel" was about him as well.
Drunken Angel was Blaze Foley. He was killed defending an old friend on his front porch. Listen to some of his stuff. Great. Also listen to Bad Livers, crow black chicken
Well, shoot, This was from where she got the reputation, they said she could sing the chrome off a trailer hitch. You know her songs sghe wrote and sang would complete a book as thick as a dictionary. And they was about life, hers and others'.
Thank you so much for posting this. Today is the 3rd anniversary of my husband's unexpected death. Laid in the basement for a few days quietly dieing...I so hope an angel whispered in his ear and held him close and took away his fears...

🎉
wow, always wondered. thanks.
I’m from Abilene tx and this song makes me cry
I am from East Texas. When I was young, in the 60's and 70's, I made that drive many times. 🥲
Lucinda Williams is one of the greatest songwriters of our and a few other generations time.
Could not agree more
Those words are true, indeed.
tHIS SONG MEANT SO MUCH TO MY HUSBAND AND I NEVER KNEW WHY.
Sad and so beautiful!
I love her voice. Like no one else. When you hear her, you know it's Lucinda. Great songwriter. Car Wheels is a perfect album, start to finish. What a Gal!

u mean the soulless drivel? LOL. Commercial isn't an insult to me. Elvis, The Beatles, etc were very commercial.
I cant stop listening to this song. It is beautiful and I don't know why I never heard of Lucinda Williams before, but I find her music very moving.
Burl Maurer Same with me
Amen.
So glad to have a fabulous collection of her music. She's wonderful with a unique voice. She smashes every track. Saw her gig in Glasgow a few years ago. She was fantastic. Hope she comes back sometime. 🙏

I don't know why I never got into her music before but she's fantastic. Such a rich voice, such interesting lyrics. God is good!
Hauntingly excellent!
God bless Louisiana right now. From Lake Charles and beyond...amen.
I'm not a fan of most modern Country-Western, but I make a rare exception with regards to Lucinda Williams -- her talent as a musician, singer and songwriter transcend genre!!
Still my favorite of all her great songs. What a treasure she is.
Lu is rollin' through my town, in early August 2018. Just got the tix tonight. Seen her once before at the Greek in LA, opening for John Fogerty. See her, if you ever get the chance-- she sings her heart out.
Listening to Howlin Wolfe going over the Atchafaylaya basin in a ole El Camino. What a wonderful picture. 'No matter what they say'.
She has been hailed by critics. So I don't know who "they" are.
Lu's the best, an American treasure. Out of her amazing catalog, this has always been one of my favorites...
My first listen... God made this woman. I subbed to hear her where ever
Absolutely perfect. So beautiful.
I'm with you there. Listen to it over and over. It's like a lullaby.
This song is so wonderful is so many ways, that I can't even articulate how it makes me feel! "... no matter what they say!"
me to . very nice
+John F. Eden I feel the same way about it.....it's just wonderful.
John F. Eden people

This is easily my favorite song of hers.
the soul of East Texas... grew up down there in Beaumont, left in 67.
Left Dayton/Liberty in 78 for Beaumont. Left there in 81 for Lake Charles, left there in 83 for the world
Left Barbers Hill in 1969 , was in the service till 72 then Calif, then back to Beloved Texas...
Wow. This song just rips your heart. Lucinda, you are AMAZING.
So real.....rips my heart out.
What a beautiful tune.
This is my favorite song boy this girl can sing a lament hope she is right i would love to have an angel hold me as i go
Beautiful -- with just minimal acoustic guitars. And Lucinda looks bewitchingly lovely.
So perfect! From everybody, the slide guitarist, the backup singer and especially Lucinda Williams... obviously a heartfelt song about someone who died.
"Did an angel whisper in your ear
And hold you close and take away your fear
In those long, last moments?
this is incredible. i am the biggest lucinda fan. and this is the best. i would have killed to have been here.
heard this song for the first time ever today... what a treat.
My favorite singer/songwriter.
This song will live forever - well, as long as there are people listening to songs. That radio crap will be gone next week. Some solace there... perhaps.
this is country to me
Saw Lucinda and very tight 3 piece band in Santa Ana 1/14/17. Best in the business. I am a fan!
Saw her in a small college auditorium, solo, in 2011, so awesome
@@garrybocian6451 I saw her that tour. Really good show.
One of my very favorites of hers.......they're all beautiful, just like she is.
If you look at her gaze it is up and out. She doesn't sing TO us, only FOR us.
She writes so well, the lyrics say it all. She doesn't seem to be interested in making us feel as though these are her feelings, rather, she wants us to feel what the song's characters are feeling. IMHO.
real heartfelt music so very very beautiful.
Lake Charles.....my beautiful home town!
Lucinda Williams...one of the great authentic voices of American music.
always makes me cry...
Nicholas Glover I'm thinking that's the way it is if lucky enough to come up round there
saw her last night, blew it out of the water! go see her live, it is priceless.
The song is about an old lover of hers, Clyde Joseph Woodward. She wanted to spread his ashes off the bridge in Lake Charles but was told it was not permitted. Apparently she did it anyway. of all her songs, this has to be my favorite. Second would be Greenville, then Essense
Jim Edwards thank you for the back story, generally one must have lived and loved and lost to do like she does ;)
Jim Edwards is
♥
He actually died of cirrhosis. She was on a plane from L.A. to see him before he went. She didn't make it in time. There are a couple of good articles written about the two of them, his passing, and the song he inspired. Sad tale.
Great song, amazing voice, Thanks
Such a beautiful, heartfelt song about my great city. I love it!
I have lived in Houston, TX before so I am familiar with these places - spent a week in Lake Charles one night myself :-}
Thanks so much for posting this.
So great. Period.
She is so underrated......
Man....not by me!!
I LOVE LUCINDA.... SHES MY FAV
Love this 🎼🎤👏👍😀
beautiful
Jim Lauderdale singing harmony, as on the record. He's also great friends with the fantastic New York group. Donna the Buffalo.
really great performance!
This song kicks, and what a voice.
Keep it up girl
Luv you, Lucinda!
Thanks for posting this, I love Lucinda, I've seen her a few times and always wanted to see her in my home town. Then after I paid for my holiday this year she announced she was playing Liverpool, the day after I went away - I was gutted, hope she comes back
Sorry to hear that it didn't work it out for you -
OK, it's simple. There is no one that can sing a song like Lucinda Williams.
Live at Austin city limits is her finest performance recorded. The band backing her is exceptional.
The two players flawlessly accompanying her here are also in the 1998 ACL band, John Jackson playing slide on the resonator and Jim Lauderdale singing harmony. They all look younger here.
so very super music. ....❤
She (her voice) reminds me of a female Townes 🧡💜
This is a treasure.
Beautiful
A fine song
wonderful
Got nothing to say 'cept my mommy was born in Sulphur Mine, July 26, 1922; passed away January 1, 2014 in San Antonio.
R.I.P.
Exquisite
Yep that’s Jim Lauderdale on harmony and the guitarist is the very underrated John King who went on to play with Shelby Lynne.
With Gurf Morlix and Jim Lauderdale..... great!!
No Gurf. That’s John Jackson on slide.
Raylan Givens is wearing a t shirt with lyrics from this on the back, in the last episode of Justified - City Primeval.
I'm not sure but I think this is about her friend/songwriter Townes Van Zandt who died of substance abuse shortly before the "Car Wheels" was recorded. I think "Drunken Angel" was about him as well.
@GonzoRecovery yer so right acool song about my old bud, clyde
Stunning early performance. Ignore the so-so video quality.
pretty good ,i've never heard of her i liked it very much .........
Like it!
Chills...
with Jim Lauderdale??? backing vocals
Yes, that's Jim Lauderdale and Gurf Morlix on slide guitar..
+Gerard Kuijpers Definitely not Gurf. It's John Jackson.
@freshflower4 that's how rumors get started. it is about an old friend who passed away a while back.
in those long, last , moments......
"I luv it!"
Ĺove
Angels
Thanks Lu. You see it all.
😢. Is that #JimLauderdale on guitar? Looks like him with bushy hair?
What's wrong with Nacogdoches?
Mark Potvin It ain't Lake Charles, apparently. ;)
Boy, that Lake Charles has something.
love that!!
It ain't t Nacogtoches? Thats the one in Louisiana? Cities named for twin Indian fellas is my understanding but diff states today...
Drunken Angel was Blaze Foley. He was killed defending an old friend on his front porch. Listen to some of his stuff. Great. Also listen to Bad Livers, crow black chicken
The female Neil Young. Absolutely no disrespect what-so-ever.
Well, shoot, This was from where she got the reputation, they said she could sing the chrome off a trailer hitch. You know her songs sghe wrote and sang would complete a book as thick as a dictionary. And they was about life, hers and others'.
friday 4.22 happy earthday, loves. i'm on the front row for lu in louisville TONIGHT! what year was this video....anyone?
i don't see gurf morlix anywhere in this video. am i missing something???
It's John " JJ" Jackson.
Why isn't she the next to Emmylou
@debdebbyg This song came out nearly 10 years before Katrina.
@HighMaintenance2099 i met clyde in nacogdoches around 1970. do you remember me?
hold a little pain and sing some hard rain Cindir block solid then and now
This song is on the True Blood soundtrack.
A better lyricist is not to be found.
I think it's about Hurricane Katrina.
Read about it in www.austinchronicle.com/music/1998-10-23/520480/
Here's a story about Clyde: www.weeklywire.com/ww/10-26-98/austin_music_feature2.html
Mike L THANKS A MILLION for sharing this Mike!!! Really really appreciate this.
Today 26 Jan 2017, is Lu's 64th Birthday!
