honestly if they heeded his warning and didnt go "HURR DURR Red Man Bad me Genocide his Planet now" and Leman didnt listen to the guy Magnus was warning him about, the Horus Heresy would have probably ended very differently. If Magnus was a Terra sitting the golden Throne or partaking in the Webway battle this would have ended very diffrently. The end of the siege was mainly psychic problems, Magnus would have been an amazing help or even him not taking part in the solar war. The TS and Word Bearers teleporting the fleet right next to terra while the Phalanx was demon infested was the checkmate of the solar war. Doubt it could have been done by the word bearers alone. Not to mention psychic powers being really effective against demons and the TS being the main psycher boys, yeah i know it was outlawed but in the heresy every legion ignored the decree because it was stupid) . Magnus did plenty wrong but the handeling of Magnus was a fuckup on multiple front of epic proportion. The diffrence between the tragedy of the siege vs a complete imperial victory was a matter of hours and Magnus would have bought more than enough time.

Perturabo is a really tragic figure. His adoptive sister summed up his faults completely and he killed her because he refused to see it through his anger. He picked tough jobs no one else wanted and felt a martyr because of it and when no one appreciated him he felt bitter. When he picks the toughest jobs and handles them in the most bitter way to make things as miserable for himself and his men out of spite. He whines he never got to build works of peace and only did war... when he could've conquered a world and left it a paradise but he instead just conquered it and left a ruin and move on so he could feel bitter about it. When he had his marines sack his homeworld of Olympia and he killed his sister he realized the horror of what he did and that it was wrong. When he asked if his men carried out his orders he was told that some refused and were put down. When he heard that some of them refused he smiled knowing some of his sons knew to do the right thing in spite of him, he felt proud of them. That is the saddest moment for me as despite all his flaws, he knew deep down what was right, his anger just blinded him to it.

@@j.aquisado8858 Angron is just sad and depressing. He was meant to be a healer and empath and he was turned into the exact opposite. He never got to be who he was meant to be. I can only imagine an Angron who didn't get the nails and kept his empath powers. How he could have helped heal Perturabo's bitterness, help Konrad deal with his madness, help Horus deal with his doubts, see Fulgrim's corruption and that he wasn't himself... of all the roles and duties the primarchs had, it really seemed Angron was meant to be the one who was supposed to be there for their struggles when the Emperor couldn't. Angron being found so utterly broken and so far removed from his intended role... it makes sense why the Emperor just didn't care about him, any purpose he had planned for him was gone and he had left was a broken tool he might as well use while he can as a hammer.

While I agree that much of his suffering is self-made, it definitely did not help that both of his fathers saw him primarily as a tool of war. His adoptive father eventually grew to love him, but this was only after spending Perturabo's entire childhood reforging him into a weapon or using him as a trophy. Perturabo was overjoyed when the Emperor arrived, thinking his true father would love him. However, he was thrust into the worst situations, and the wars he fought became even more brutal.
Born as a builder, he was forced to become a destroyer. He wanted to learn, yet his ability made him unable, just instantly gain knowledge. His dream was to construct a perfect paradise city, yet the Emperor refused to let him build the Imperial Palace. The only thing he ever built for the Emperor was intended to be a sports arena, but the Emperor used it as a courthouse to judge Perturabo’s only friend, Magnus.
      I remember reading this quote:
"What happened to my son who loved to draw beautiful paintings?" his adoptive father asked.
      "Nobody wanted them," Perturabo replied.
Additionally, the abilities given to him worsened his mental state. Having the ability to instantly see flaws in anything does not help one grow into a well-adjusted person. Which also made him always see the one inherited flaw of the universe, THE CHAOS.

So a couple things about Perturabo and the Iron Warriors:
1.) Pertie hated war, he never wanted to go to battle, never wanted to lead armies, he wanted to be an architect, he wanted to work on infrastructure and monuments, but the Emperor already had Dorn for that, and so tossed Pertie out to fight and kill, and he used his talents to fight wars the way he could think to, slow and steady
2.) It isnt hyperbole when Bricky says the heresy wouldnt have gotten shit done without the iron warriors, they were WINNING until Pertie got sick of being the only one pulling his weight and fucked off, the Imperium survives because perturabo phoned it in on the last shift

The iron warriors also got set up with the absolute worst jobs, with very high casualty rates. Their nickname was the Corpse Grinders, and being assigned to them was a punishment. Though that also means that they're very used to working with human and mechanized formations in larger coordinated campaigns. Perty was very organized and good at orchestrating extremely complex things.

    • @myth5588
      @myth5588 6 місяців тому +13

Peter turbo was also a hypocrite that took the worst jobs out of ego, his first order apon taking command of the iron warriors was to decimate them, he complained that none of the worlds he conquered asked for news of his legions when he left no one alive to ask, the worlds he took had to be resettled, he complained that he was forced to fight and couldn't build when we know he was allowed to slow down and improve the worlds he took, proven by the ultramarines spending the time to make each world better than they found it and lorgar spending years to convert each world without reprimand until he took it too far. Petey's flaw was his unwillingness to challenge his own ego and pettiness, he threw his legion into the worst wars he could and built nothing but rubble.

Their own brothers have seem the similarities in them, but they new that fulgrim's facade of perfection was staged and rehersed. And, What makes Sanguinius's death even more impactful was that Horus had been his closest and dearest friend. They were bros for life, and even had plans after the Great Crusade to spend their peacetimes in eachother's company and play Regicide(40k Chess). There are some really nice excerpts online from books of private conversations that really showed how much they'd loved each other as brothers. Horus even admites in the second book of the Horus Heresy: False Gods, that it shouldn't have been him that was named Warmaster, and that it should have been Sanguinius. Horus didn't even want to kill him, He was trying to kill the Emperor, but Sanguinius took the blow.

When Khan arrived on Mars for the first time, the Mechanicus offered him a huge Gloriana class ship for his Legion, but Khan wanted it to be rebuilt instantly, because to him it wasn’t fast enough.
As for Fulgrim, the Emperor’s Children’s Geneseed was flawed and people often died after it’s implantation, so Fulgrim allowed Fabius Bile (a guy, who doesn’t know what Hipocratic Suggestion is) to experiment on his Legion to find a solution.

With regards to the missing two Legions. Originally, they were left intentionally blank as both a call out to the lost Roman Legions and as something for players to fill in themselves with their own OCs. As time went on and we were getting more details about the Great Crusade, well those missing Legions started being more and more conspicuous. GW didn't want to fill in the blanks for the obvious reason that nothing would ever be as good as what people had built up in their heads. So, they've left the Legions blank and said they were erased from history with only a few vague details. The Primarchs of the Legions are referred to as "The Lost and the Damned." They were apparently two separate events. The Ultramarines(and one or two others) suddenly had a massive influx of "recruits." Some of the Primarchs(notably Rogal Dorn) had their memories of the two Primarchs erased at their own request.
With Sanguinius, one of the fun details about him is that he was one of the greatest warriors among the Primarchs. If you could sit them all down and ask "Which of your brothers do you think could take you in a fight?" and get an honest answer, they'd say Sanguinius.
During the Heresy, he fought a Bloodthirster called Ka’Bandha, a Greater Daemon of Khorne and he literally broke it over his knee. As in, he picked up one of the most terrible creatures under Khorne's command, lifted it over his head and broke its back over his knee. After he ripped its wings off and said "Only angels may fly."
As for Angron, he wasn't the Emperor's anger. Your theory that the Primarchs each represent some aspect of the Emperor, BTW, is one that's broadly accepted by the fandom. Exactly what each Primarch corresponds to is up for considerable debate, but Angron's anger isn't natural to him. It's something instilled by the Butcher's Nails. What a lot of people suspect is that Angron was originally the Emperor's empathy. The part that understood other people and that opened himself to them in turn. And it was all twisted by the Nails until nothing but a monster remained.
The Alpha Legion's shtick is "Are we Heretics? Are we Loyalists? Who knows? I am Alpharius!" Basically, no one is entirely sure if the Alpha Legion is traitors or deep cover loyalists, including the Alpha Legion. It could well be that Alpharius is a traitor and Omegaon is a loyalist. Or vice versa!
"Magnus did nothing wrong!" To explain, Magnus is a very sympathetic figure because like you've noted, he got gaslit by Tzeentch and was Pushed rather than Fell. But one Magnus's big traits is Hubris. He was a powerful psyker and felt that all knowledge was fundamentally good. During the Crusade, if the Thousand Sons had to burn a place to the bedrock, they'd be looting every piece of writing on that planet first. The Emperor saw Magnus's love of knowledge and his curiosity regarding the Warp and he warned him it was dangerous. What Magnus heard, though, was "The Warp is full of beings with untold knowledge" and believed he could trick or wrest that knowledge from them.
Other people besides the Emperor warned Magnus about the dangers of the Warp. But he believed it would be fine, he was strong enough and smart enough to navigate those dangers to get what he wanted.
And Tzeentch and his goons took a number of dives to foster that belief.
It got to the point where Magnus and his legion were summoning daemons to do menial tasks, secure in the belief that they could control them. In actuality, Tzeentch was telling his daemons to play softball with the Thousand Sons, for now.
This all cumulated in the Council of Nikea, which was a gathering of the Emperor, the Primarchs, and a number of other important figures in the Imperium to discuss psykery and its future in the Imperium. The details of Nikea have changed over the years, as retcons and different writers piled up. Originally, the conclusion of the Council was a compromise, the banning of Sorcery(calling on daemons and worse) to do magic while psykery(using your own power) was permitted. Later works would instead put it as banning psykery altogether and ignoring the giant gold plated elephant in the room. Either way, Magnus was not happy and it and ignored the edicts of Nikea. When he found out about Horus and tried to warn the Emperor, he chose specifically to do so via Sorcery instead of the other options he had available because he wanted to prove a point. That Sorcery could be used for the benefit of the Imperium.
This ended poorly and the Emperor sent orders for Magnus to be arrested and brought to Terra. Horus, still believed loyal, changed the orders to the Emperor wanting Magnus's head on a plate. Leman Russ and the Wolves torched Prospero to get at Magnus and Tzeentch told his daemons they didn't have to play nice anymore, which helped nothing. This was then followed by Tzeentch offering Magnus the help he needed if he'd sell his soul and the rest was history.

This means that the only way for him to gain any satisfaction from doing what he does best, building; is to use his creations to help people. The man who was born to destroy wanted nothing more than to make an industrial paradise where people can be happy and live without working. This, combined with how his Space Marines were stationed on planets defending against the Hrud, arguably one of 5 individually strongest Xenos species.

Nux, the iron warriors had the highest death rate out of all the legions.
Siege warfare was the worst because you had to just bulldoze through the opposition.
The crusade was on a timer, so there wasn't time to starve out the enemy.
One warzone they had to fight in, the enemy was able to forcibly and rapidly age their troops and equipment on the battlefield.
Getting assigned to the Iron Warriors was seen as a punishment, and their legion was nicknamed the "corpse grinders" because of the absurdly high mortality rates.

    • @themoderndavinci3801
      @themoderndavinci3801 6 місяців тому +12

Additionally, Siege warfare was historically some of the most dangerous and lethal form of warfare. If you assault the besieged enemy, you are going to be taking heavy losses because you are deliberately attacking into an entrenched enemy. If you just try and starve them out, it will take months to years, and the entire time you are sitting in a camp filled with disease and still getting shot at by the defender.
There is a reason most sieges were done with the purpose of forcing a surrender instead of a fight.
And to that end, the Iron Warriors represent the offensive side of the siege, while the Imperial Fist are the defense side (which would explain their generally better demeanor and grim stoic resolve).

      @gama343 6 місяців тому +5

According to The Art of War, doing a siege is stupid and wrong and basically means you lost the real fight and are just being a petty bitch. Perfectly fitting for the Iron Warriors.
Also, because Perturabo doesn't care about the lives of his men, he does sieges in a stupid and wrong manner. He doesn't try to wait out his enemies, he throws waves of men against their walls to die ineffectually while shelling the crap out of them with artillery until only a crater remains. He could use his fleets in orbit to bomb the enemy position for the same result, but he doesn't, because he wants to prove he's the best at siege warfare.
Perturabo's competence comes from his logistical skills, in allotting the exact amount of resources necessary to complete a task. His skills as a general are among the worst of the Primarchs because he doesn't care about his losses or winning in the most efficient way. Instead, he lets his enemies fortify as much as they can while he takes his time setting up for a siege, even though about a dozen other methods would get the job done faster and cheaper, and grinds both his enemy and his Legion down.

Funny enough, Angron and the World Eaters were Khorne's second choice, because they're artificially angry while his first pick, Sanguinius and the Blood Angels are naturally angry. Before they were reunited with Sanguinius, the Blood Angels were absolute berserk monsters that were probably on the verge of being put down because of how rabid they were. Sanguinius taught them restraint and how to ground themselves...but only because he had a very kind and empathetic adopted father. If the planets that Sanguinius and Angron landed on had been swapped, Sanguinius probably would have become a master of slaughter in Nuceria's arenas without even needing the Butcher's Nails while Angron would have become a traveling healer on Baal since his original ability was an empathy so strong he could heal the wounds of others by taking them onto himself. Essentially, Angron was originally designed by the Emperor to be the therapist and physician for the others while Sanguinius was designed to be a literal angel of death, but because of their upbringings they could never truly fulfill their intended roles.

Perturabo actually fell to the sin of perfectibility. He is faster, stronger, smarter than a normal man and came to view his "better-ness" as to mean he had to be perfect but still subconsciously knew he was not. Examples: as a "child" he came upon a monster attacking a shepherd and his kid. He watched the monster kill and eat the child, then went off, forged a spear and killed the monster before laying the body of the creature in front of the father. (if he had engaged the monster earlier he may have failed to save the child or been injured proving he wasn't perfect.) He had plans that would up the tech level of his homeworld by hundreds of years and only built a spaceport (because the plans were hypothetical and could have failed, his adoptive sister in one of the books even mocks him for it) In warfare he almost always sent his subcommanders in charge first, watched what happened, then mocked the subcommander for "failing" before pulling 2-3 times the heavy weapons and used the info from the 1st battle and study of enemy tactics to win.
The Nightlord's homeworld made the Moss Eisly cantina from star wars look like a 5 star hotel. His legal system was -you stole bread to feed your family, you will be skinned and executed for theft. The Factory manager that wasn't paying you enough to feed your family will also have his family executed and he will be impaled (alive) because he caused the situation.
How good Sanguinus was - before he was found on Baal his legion was so violent they scared the Nightlords and the World Eaters. The Emperor even considered purging them. He told them to collectively take a breath, calm down, enjoy some artistry (crafting, sculpture, painting, poetry) and turned them into one of the most loyal and regimented Legions. Sanguinus caused a Bloodthirster (one of Khorne's own champions) greater daemon to flee from him, pursued it into the air, landed on the daemon's back and ripped the wings off while whispering in it's ear "Only angels fly".

The Raven Guard are my favorite, but Bricky only glanced over them briefly. Here's a brief rundown on my favorite lore bits from the beaky bois:
    * Deliverance is not actually a planet, it's a moon. It was originally a gulag when Corax landed there as an infant (long story). Corax grew up and basically led a revolt to free the people there.
    * Raven Guard stealth boils down to a fusion of lo-fi (stuffing dirt and cloth in their armor joints) and the equivalent of a Jedi mind trick. They also have a lot of stealth tech like whisper-quiet engines. So basically they're cyber ninjas with sniper rifles.
    * Raven Guard, much like Salamanders, are also quite nice to regular humans. Not as much, but they also go out of their way to free humans from slavery.
    * Corvus Corax did not like Horus at all. Horus basically forced Corax to take an enemy army head-on and ended up killing a lot of the RG. Corax punched Horus in the face after that and never trusted him again.
    * Following the Heresy, Corax (or his ghost/JoJo Stand, we're not sure) went to find Lorgar in the Warp and has turned it into a Freddy Fazbear pop-up, killing any Word Bearers he can find and howling for Lorgar's head.

The well organized and armed guerrilla fighters consisting of your now-former subjects? Well, they just blew up all your roads, storehouses, raided your armory, depleted your rations, and poisoned your next 15 meals while 5 trained snipers have scopes on all your windows at once.
Raven Guard are kinda inverse Iron Warriors in a way. The Iron Warriors do not like chaos, they serve chaos because *fuck you.* The Raven Guard do not serve the imperium because they like the imperium, they serve it because to them it is the least bad option, and because *fuck you* for mistreating those below yourself.

Two excellent videos about a pair of primarchs, Fulgrim and Guilleman by PancreasNoWork really give you a vision for both characters and their relationships with some of their brothers. That and Fulgrim's video mentions a certain event on a certain world that may or may not have been the biggest flex in Warhammer.

Sanguinius and the Blood Angels are my favorite legion, and so tragic. The reason the black rage exists is because his legion loved him so much, when he died, the psychic feedback destroyed their minds. Its so tragic. Not too mention, of course, that Horus and Sanguinius were very, very close pre-Heresy.

Then I read the novels and learned about Jaghatai Khan and his boys, and I can't help it. I just love that bastard. None of the space marine legions had every single member of the chapter in one place when the heresy happened, some members would reconnect with the imperium after finishing something or travelling the warp somewhere only to find out their legion had turned traitor, the legions that did turn traitor also needed to perform a cleanse of loyalists from their ranks, as a result during the heresy and a little bit after it you had a lot of small bands of what became known as black shield space marines, these were space marines who's legion had turned traitor but they themselves had stayed loyal

52:35 Sanguinius was genuinely one of the best people in the setting. He was the strongest of all the emperors sons, and is said to be the most like his father out of all of them. He could see the future, just like the emperor, and could use those two angel wings to actually fly across the battlefield. The blood angels, before they met Sanguinius, were horrible berserkers, the most blood thirsty and hate filled legion out of all of them, and were destined to be destroyed by the Emperor for their cruelty. The great Angel, Sanguinius, when he met them, instead of letting his sons bow to him, he bowed to them, showing his humility. Through time, he taught them the error of their ways, he gave them back their humanity. He loved his people and loved humanity above all. He loved all his brothers, and really held them together until the end. It was sanguinius that defended the eternity gate as the great bastion of Dorn’s defense began to crumble. It was him who fought and bled against his traitorous brothers and their sons for three days straight, with absolutely no respite. It was his determination and willingness to give up anything for Mankind’s ascendency, that inspired the forces of the imperium to not give up. When he challenged Horus on the vengeful spirit, Horus did not use the powers of chaos, respecting Sanguinius too much to cheat like that. The great Angel, injured, exhausted, completely spent, wiped the floor with Horus, ripping him to shreds, before horus took the powers of chaos back into himself. Horus was given every single ounce of energy the dark gods had, and then Horus killed him. Sanguinius knew he would not win that battle, but he didn’t care. As he knew it would avert something worse, and give his Father time. He was the greatest primarch of them all, the kindest, the most courageous, the strongest, the bravest, the most willing to sacrifice everything, and he was killed by the arch traitor Horus. His body is in stasis on Baal, and his spirit still protects the imperium to this day, giving psychic gifts to the blood angels and empowering a man known as the Sanguinor to help them. All of us, Everyone, misses and loved Sanguinius.
So glad you got to the space marine legions. Now, we just have to do those individual deep dives with the Templin Institute and the cinematics I promise you, you will love the Templin Institute deep dives. Iron Warriors are one of my favorite legions because of the fact that most of their members don't actually worship the Chaos gods and only work with them out of spite and to get revenge on the emperor for how he treated them during the Great Crusade, always sending them to deal with the worst of the worst conflicts. They would break the most impenetrable and fortified worlds over and over and over again. And they would never be praised or given any kind of fanfare. All while his brothers (mainly Dorn) would win these "easy" victories and be hailed as heroes of the imperium. So yeah, he got really pissed off and would prove he was better than his brother (see the Iron Cage).
Also, there is a theory that Petter Turbo isn't actually a demon but is wearing a very powerful life support golem armor. Which makes sense for his character as he hates demons and thinks his brothers who fell to chaos are weak. Tldr, cool character lol

The most heartbreaking thing in Angron's sad story is that each primarch has their special ability/specialization (Covrus Corax could go invisible etc etc) and Angron had a "magic empathy" he could take on the pain, suffering and apathy of other people and in return endow them with peace and tranquility, and his powerful and kind heart and mind coped with the hardships of other arena slaves make him their spiritual father and an angelic protector (Spartacus rip off story in space). He's literally an EMPATH and psychotherapist on steroids who was lobotomized to be an eternal berserker and later became a slave to the god of carnage and blood that Khorne plays as a gamer in some online game on the Internet in POV. And the first victim after the introduction of the butcher’s nails from Angron was his best friend and adoptive father, he tore him into pieces in the arena and was not even allowed to kill himself when when the bloody veil fell from his sight. And the whole planet laughed their asses about it (it was broadcasted planet wide). The dude has like one of the saddest story of all primarchs. He could have been one of the greatest heroes in mankind's history, but he became the most broken slave. And he had no choice.
Sometimes (when the butcher's nails called it upon him) Angron gave out truly powerful quotes. He says this to the ideal son of the Emperor - primarch Roboute Guilliman (the current Lord Regent of the Imperium in 40k and the ruler of the Ultramarines Legion), who had an ideal childhood (with an awesome mom and dad, half of the primarchs were jealous of Roboute) and his own perfect empire of 500 worlds (a role model for the rest of the Imperium worlds).
"‘The people of your world named you Great One. The people of mine called me Slave. Which one of us landed on a paradise of civilisation to be raised by a foster father, Roboute? Which one was given armies to lead after training in the halls of the Macraggian high-riders? Which one of us inherited a strong, cultured kingdom? And which one of us had to rise up against a kingdom with nothing but a horde of starving slaves? Which one of us was a child enslaved on a world of monsters, with his brain cut up by carving butchers knives Listen to your blue-clad wretches yelling of courage and honour, courage and honour, courage and honour! Do you even know the meaning of those words? Courage is fighting the kingdom that enslaves you, no matter that their armies overshadow yours by ten thousand to one. You know nothing of courage! Honour is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the hypocrisy he feeds them. You know nothing of honour!"

He states that the krorks were a race uplifted by the Old Ones, rather than created for the War in Heaven. Iirc he also said that the krorks betrayed the Old Ones, their sibling races, and each other (they didn't do most of that, the Aeldari tricked them).
As for the Inquisition: he still thinks "Innocence Proves Nothing" is just an excuse for them to do whatever cruel thing they want (it's not). There's also him misunderstanding the placement of power of them, the Custodes, and the High Lords. He thinks the High Lords have authority over them, when they do not, and they actually operate on a more equal level with neither usually being answerable to the other. There's also him forgetting that they and the Custodes are equal on paper, with both only being answerable to the Emperor, with the High Lords also being answerable to the Lord Commander.
