"Time" is a concept album that tells the story of a man who time travels from 1981 to 2095 and his struggle to make sense of the world he finds himself in, the people and things he misses, and his attempt to return. Really needs to be listened to as a whole to properly appreciate.
My favorite ELO album - the public at large didn't get it, but the fans love the fact that the band eschewed horns and strings for synths. It's the first New Wave ELO album, and should have opened a new chapter in their career. Instead, it was only embraced half-way, and signalled a downturn in their popularity.
My favorite as well, I can listen to this over and over and never get tired of it, beginning to end. Pretty good for 1981!
I use the intro to “Here Is The News” as my ringtone. Wakes everyone up! 😂
my favorite album too, love it to bits!
I bought the album when it came out in 1980. Still a huge fan. I have only seen them once. Do Here is the news. Greetings from Norway!
Agreed. The album isn't just musically brilliant, it's quite thought provoking.
I'm hoping once every few months they do a Rob Squad Deep Dive and listen to a concept album, so they understand the music as it was meant to be experienced.
RIP Richard Tandy who died last month at the age of 76. His incredible keyboards were an integral part of the ELO sound.
Great thinking of him! His keyboards indeed were second to none. They are awesome on this one.
RIP Richard Tandy
He was such a great musician and a real, wonderful English gentleman to boot. My band played Twilight live just a few weeks ago and we dedicated the song to Richard who had just recently passed ❤
Definitely!
ELO’s “ Time “ is a great album!!! Underrated and way ahead of its …well, you know.
Time travel greatness, one of the ten best concept albums of all “time”. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius of the highest order. Please hear the entire album! Love your reactions always!!
Their best album, in my opinion, and one of the greatest ever. So underrated!
I see what you did there lol
Thank you to whoever requested this fantastic song for Jay and Amber to react to! I love it still! ☮️💕
Time is a concept album. You have two songs out of context. It really deserves to get a full listen. RIP Kelly Groucutt and Richard Tandy.
What out of context - they're the first two tracks on the album!!!
@@MetFan37 Unless you have the backstory, you would not understand the context and meaning of the tracks just listening to the first two tracks. Did you catch their confused faces as Twilight ends and Yours Truly, 2095 was about to spin up? Because the track had to be cut somewhere?
@@aj_aka_alan
They can still be appreciated by themselves. Yes, ideally, they would get MUCH more appreciation from the whole album, but... this will have to suffice. Maybe they will give the whole album a try? But they've reacted to MANY similar songs (that hinted at a larger, possibly more fantastic story), but I've yet to see them mention any deeper (longer) dives. The downside of reaction videos, I guess.
Jeff is a bloody genius and this is a very underrated album. One of my favorites.
This album is a fuckin' beast. Over the last 2 decades, I've come to realize that Time is ELO's best album.
Absolutely!! Originally conceived by Jeff Lynne as a double album but talked out of it by the record company, at least three songs were left out of the Euro and American releases. “ Julie Doesn’t Live here Anymore” is the best of this group. Some sources on UA-cam have the album in its entirety. Cheers to you Cletus for loving this album as I do.
I've realized it the first time I heard it 😄, my favorite forever.
Agree 100%
@@chuckhutton5087 Totally agree with you. One of my friends introduced me to ELO (at 12yo I think) - and I rushed out to buy the album (on vinyl of course!). I drove my parents MAD listening to this. It is STILL my favourite ELO album of all time 🥰
I dig most of, Time, but it's not real ELO. There are at least 5 better ELO albums. Probably 6.
I first heard this album through headphones on a bus trip in the middle of the night in rural Australia in 1981, when it had just been released. It has remained one of my favourites ever since. Well worth listening to the whole album in one sitting and appreciating the story it tells. Always hoped someone would film the story with the album as a soundtrack.
This is an underrated album. The song following this one is about a female robot. Ticket to the Moon is one of my faves from this album. It’s a good listen!
"The Way Life's Meant to Be"
Ticket to the moon is awesome but many others like 21st Century Man and Rain is falling
I got a huge smile on my face when I saw the notification for this. Played this album from start to finish incessantly back in the day. Thanks for the reaction...enjoy. ❤❤❤
Exactly, and I still do. One of my all time favs.
Me too!!
🇬🇧 OMG! ELO (my favourite band in the whole world 🌍). Jeff Lynn (my favourite singer/songwriter, human in the world 🌎). And I had forgotten all about this song! Thanks to ALL who suggested it. And thank you Amber & Jay for reacting to it, made my day.
👍🔥🎼🎶🇬🇧🇺🇲
@@kimcutts6153 Jeff Lynne is your favorite singer/songwriter, human, and you can't even spell his name correctly??
@@MetFan37 ❤
I still have this album! I bough it when I was in high school in 1981. So cool & very trippy! "Hold on Tight" was a fave song.
One of my all time favourites albums, you need to listen to the whole album. I remember buying it on cassette in 81 and wearing it out 😃
I got this on vinyl when from Columbia House (remember them? - I was a member) as their "Selection of the Month". I immediately fell in love with it, and today it is still one of my Top Ten all-time favorite albums.
This contains one of ELOs greatest album intros. For their greatest album outro you need to listen to Shangri-la which closes ‘a new world record’ . It’s stunning
Listen to the whole album. I was listening to this on headphones the first time I flew in a big plane. We were taxi-ing down the runway and the jet started to pick up speed just at end of epilogue and really took of during the instrumental break prior to twilight. Man it was a rush. From Mick.D.
Back in 1981 this song was used as the theme song for an animation festival / conference called Daicon IV in Japan. You can find the video on UA-cam of the animation they created to go along with this song. It was created by a group of amateur animators. Many of the individuals, who would later come to create all of the interesting animated movies and shows from Japan, were inspired by this single animation. The music was a big part of that.
A TV show from ca. 2005 called "Densha otoko" used it as a theme song as an homage to the Daicon IV animation. (Same show opens up the first episode with "Mr. Roboto" by Styx.)
I love every song on this album! Made me a lifelong fan! Next song is 2095 (yours truly). This album leaves 1981 and doesn’t come home! Great story and still you wonder, if it’s real or it’s a dream.
The second song should be played next as this a concept album. It's a roller coaster
Chilling with you two is a true pleasure. Thanks for the ELO.
OMG!! This album is so good!!! I recommend you listen to it from beginning to end for the full effect!! AMAZING! I am so happy you reacted to this! This album was definitely a major part of the soundtrack to my teenage years. Have a great day!!
The track that goes next and connect with Twilight is “Yours Truly, 2095”, at tells the story about a man talking with an AI entity. Imagine that back in 1981.
“Is that what you want?”
😁
She has an IQ of 1001
She has a jumpsuit on
And she's also a telephone
"Is what you really want?"😊
I remember when this album came out in 1981. It was only two years after the Discovery album but it sounds as if it was recorded two decades after.
Thank you so much for reacting to this one. As a teenager I was a huge ELO fan. The album Time was the first album I'd ever bought as soon as it came out (I remember reading about the new album in Musician magazine and calling a local record store every day for two weeks until they got it in). The first time I listened to it, I was kind of freaked out, because it both sounded like ELO and nothing at all like ELO. After a few more listens, it quickly became my favorite album of theirs. While I still listen to a lot of ELO songs from time to time, I regularly listen to this whole album still. There are definite influences from the Buggles, Devo, and others throughout the album. Whether you do a reaction video or not, try to make some time to listen to this whole album. It is an experience with some funny moments, sad moments, and clever moments in the story telling (releasing an album in 1981 that has lyrics about remembering the good ol' 1980s was brilliant to my high school brain back then...LOL).
Yassss! Finally! So glad you chose this one!!! I wore.this.out on vinyl in my teens. Please tell me: in this digital format, do you still hear different parts of the music going back and forth/left and right in your headphones? That was the absolute best thing about listening to stereo analog back in the day. Love love love this, you guys!
Really this whole album is a masterpiece.
Thank you Jay and Amber. For sharing this wonderful ELO song. It is my all time favorite of theirs .
I can remember buying this album when it first came out and it just blew my mind. Love the reaction!!!
I remember having to buy the cassette version three times in the '80 because I kept wearing out the tape.
ELO should cap off their farewell tour later this year by performing this album in its entirety at the Vegas Sphere.
Yes❤
this is my favorite ELO music. used in anime also. look for daicon 4 opening. that is the OG song used in 1983. and used in japanese drama Densha otoko opening.
I absolutely love this album from start (these two songs) to finish. My favorite ELO album
You need to keep going with this album. It's not a collection of songs but a story that continues from track to track. Brilliant album.
“Fire on High” you should listen next time around.
I scrolled thru the comments to find the first FIRE ON HIGH. One of my favorite ELO tracks,
talk about TRIPPY.
Thanks for this Reaction, this was a high school album for me. I remember my older brother bringing the album entitled A New World Record into our home several years earlier. I could still play that album on repeat. A great song called Rockaria is a favorite.
So interesting that Jay describes listening to this song as “an experience” because this experience pales in comparison to the “experience” of witnessing them for an entire concert at max volume, which I was blessed to experience on five different occasions.
This album needs to be listened to in its entirety in one sitting to be appreciated properly and with full justice to Jeff Lynne’s musical genius. 👍🏼
Jeff Lynne is one of the greats.
I cannot even imagine my life without his music in it.
The drums at the opening of Twilight are amazing.
Back in the early 80’s, I got a kick ass tape deck with a 60 watt amp and big speakers. When demonstrating this to my parents, this was the tape I first put in. It was awesome.
I am so excited you chose to "first react" to this song! This was my very first ELO song I ever heard, one of the first 45s I ever bought, and STILL since about 1981 my favorite ELO song...and i don't say that lightly, because IMO all ELO songs are FANTASTIC. I am glad you enjoyed this wonderful song!
This was the amazing opening tracks of the concept album, Time! It’s an amazing album as you can hear it was quite a change to more of a sunthpop sound for the band but the song writing and production and vocals are still amazing. The whole album is a masterpiece! “Ticket to the moon” from this album is a stunning piano driven ballad! The other hit off here was “Hold on Tight” Thank you for this reaction!
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Fire On High"!!!
That song is sooo amazing!! It's like the soundtrack to a horror movie! I LOVE IT!
Pay up!
First song off the stellar album “ Face the Music”,” Fire on High” is a classic in the truest sense of the word. Brilliant and majestic. Has a vibe of battle between God and His angels versus demons who challenge Him on his turf.
FINALLY 💙🙌
Time is one of my all time favourite albums.. it takes you on a journey from start to finish!! Love Prologue/Twilight
The Best ELO album, in my opinion!! Timeless
This album from ELO is one of my all-time, favorites. I've listened to it in it's entirety hundreds of times.
Time, still my Number 1 album
My fave album of all time and space. Sounded like it was from the future when it was first released. And even when you listen to it today, it still sounds like it's from the future. Timeless 😊
Many reviews qualified this song as incredible...Joseph Stannard said that Time is a "very good album indeed", highlighting "Twilight" as "the most exciting song ever recorded ... Pulsating, momentous, charged with purpose and overstuffed with hooks, counter-hooks, sub-hooks and semi-hooks, 'Twilight' makes being abducted by time travelers sound like the most fun you can have.
I'm so glad you played this together; I remember when it was on radio all I ever heard was Twilight, it was much later when I heard it with Prologue attached...blew my mind!
Ah Time! I don't know how many times I've heard this album, gazillions, since it came out, absolutely love it, so many good songs! Twilight, Your Truly, Here is the News... and my love Ticket to the Moon ❤
Finally!!! My favourite ELO song, and it always seems so under the radar. No big reactor had done it yet as far as I could tell. I ask for it in the comments anytime someone does ELO. Thank you!
OH YES! One of my favourite tracks of all time (pun intended)! AWESOME MUSIC and the "Time" concept album is just unbelievable - especially "Here Is The News" and "Hold on Tight". Hugs and thank you so much Jay and Amber ❤❤❤
One of the greatest bands the of seventies and beyond.
At the very end when Jay said "What in the world?", that was the transition into the next song on the album called "Yours Truly, 2095". When I saw that you were reacting to this, I knew that Amber would be grinning through the entire song. I was right. All of this album is worth a listen.
Time is my favorite album of ELO. Every song on this album is great.
After a long plateau from Out of the Blue through Xanadu, Jeff took a big chance to break expectations
Here Is the News from this album also rocks
Also 2095
Time is one of the greatest albums ever. Ticket to the moon is my favourite from this album. And it was my first cd-record ever.
As many people above have suggested...Time is a concept album that tells a story, so to get the full effect and make sense of it, it's best to hear the whole thing. Still, there are great tracks on there that can stand alone. "Ticket to the Moon" from Time is one of my absolute favourite ELO songs...it's very different to what you've previously reacted to from ELO. You might want to give that one a try and I'd love it if you did!
"Shine A Little Love"
Actually , “ Shine a Little Love” is off ELO’s previous album “ Discovery”.
@@chuckhutton5087 I know that, I was requesting
@@RedStrikerBeetleborg
Subtlety here won't get you very far.
Please react to Shine a Little Love! I bet Amber would love it!
@@screwyootube1 it's very disco heavy
@RedStrikerBeetleborg
That's why the album is referred to by fans as "Disco? Very."
I love this sleeper album. Not too many people have even heard of it. If you don’t do a reaction to the rest, do yourselves a favor and listen to the whole thing. It is really worth it.
The whole album tells a story, you should experience it. The last song before Epilogue is Hold On Tight, the only "hit" off the album. Twilight did get a little radio play, for maybe a couple weeks before it faded away. For this lifelong ELO fan, this album was the culmination of their musical journey. It was also the first time I got to see them in concert. L.A. Forum, Ellen Foley opened. She is the female singer on Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and was the public defender on the first season of Night Court. That robotic voice in Prologue, they had a robot come out on stage and say that part right before the band came on.
"Twilight" reached the Billboard Top 40. I would call that a hit. Similar chart performance to two hits from the prior ELO album "Discovery", which were "Confusion" and "Last Train To London". And "Mr Blue Sky" from their "Out Of The Blue" album. All peaked in the 30s.
@@shyman99 I think you missed “ Shine a Little Love” , which was the biggest hit off “ Discovery “.
@@chuckhutton5087 - My prior message wasn't to say those two were the only hits from "Discovery". It was to say those two hits were comparable (chart performance wise) to "Twilight". The biggest hit from "Discovery" was "Don't Bring Me Down", which peaked at #4 and sold over a million copies. "Shine A Little Love" peaked at #8. And yes, as you can tell, I am truly a lifelong ELO fan. 🙂
Can you imagine us, in the late 70's or start 80's on the dance floor, and having a party, and then the DJ puts this one on. We exploted in ecstasy and made all those funny moves. Lifted our dance partner off the floor, or got down on the floor and turned around. We loved it.
the song that starts right as that cut off is 'yours truly 2095'
I agree it's a trippy song but it is from one of their concept albums. I love "Yours Truly 2095" on this album which immediately follows "Twilight" . It's a great concept album talking about someone from 1981 (when the album was released) experiencing life in 2095.
E.L.O.'s "Time" is one of my all time favorite albums, it's like if Beatles did an 80's album with the help of the guys in Queen. My favorite track is "Ticket To The Moon", and it's one of the albums I've listened to from start to finish the most times. And I see myself as a metalhead... And for those E.L.O.-fans who haven't heard "Julie Don’t Live Here" from the same era, you definitely should. ;)
Love this entire album. a must listen from start to finish and then replay again to catch all the things you missed the fiorst time around.
Starlight by ELO, that's the one you need to hear next!
Used by an 80s Japanese science fiction convention. Epic animation. So much copyright infringement.
DAICON IV Opening Animation!!!
OMGsh! Finally! My inner teen thanks you! - RAIN IS FALLING y'all ✌️!!
Electric Light Orchestra's "Prologue" + "Twilight" is a nostalgic trip to the dawn of electronic music! In the early '80s, microprocessor-powered synthesizers and Moog instruments were revolutionizing sound, and ELO was at the forefront. Band members like Richard Tandy were particularly nerdy about these innovations, pushing the boundaries of what synth music could achieve. These tracks capture the magic of a time when technology and music were just starting to merge in spectacular ways!
This album is from 1981 and it sounds very futuristic... it is also one of my top three ELO albums!
This is a real album from the old days which means the order of the songs was very carefully considered and mapped out. You have to hear the whole album.
That last bit that seems weird is because album were continuous in the old days and that’s the intro to the next song “Yours Truly 2095.”
Part of the lyrics sound like alien abduction. If you read the lyrics, “You came down to me from the open skies. It’s either real or it’s a dream, there’s nothing that is in between”.
I'm so glad you listened to this! This is MAGNIFICENT, and so few people react to it! It's not prog, it's not techno, it's not dance -- it's basically a classical piano concerto masquerading as a rock song.
That's a good way to describe it!
I use the album Time as my energizer and "pick me up" at work whenever I have some tedious task to get through. By the time I get to "Hold on tight to your dream" it is time to take a break, get up, and do a little dance. "Yours truly 2095" is maybe my favourite because the lyrics are hilarious. ("...she's also a telephone...."). They really looked into the future! 🤣 And by the way, the end of "Twilight" is just the start of the next song. The trippy journey has just begun....
This was the first album without the orchestra just keyboard synths. This is ELO going into the Future.
Loved listening to this album growing up. It is a bit of a change of style for ELO, and across the album the tracks are all a bit different from one another. The lyrics are amazing, you should definitely do more tracks off this album, I like Rain Is Falling and Hold on Tight - I mean what a message to people to hold on tight to your dream!
You need the whole album. It is a must listen.
Before I heard the rest of the album, I heard this track (and yes, they should go together!), and I knew I needed to have this album!
one of my absolute fav´s of them...... and they had a lot cool tracks
Yes! This is the prime example of Concept Album. It is the soundtrack of a movie that never was. If you guys react to full albums, you should do Time! The songs take you on an adventure as the protagonist is pulled from 1981 into the future of 2095, and then his misadventures as he tries to make it Home. Its a really good album!
This is the very first LP vinyl i ever bought with my own money in 6th grade…..it’s perfection! Jeff Lynn actually made this out of protest to the record company because of pressuring him to make another album within a certain amount of time. But it’s still one of my all time favorite albums from beginning to end. Listen to it as a whole😉
The entire album is awesome.
Since Amber enjoys the trippy, space stuff, check out "Children Of The Sun" from Billy Thorpe. Your headphones are going to be in heaven!
Definitely!👍
My first experience with this song came to my car stereo while driving I 70 eastbound at 5:30 AM (twilight). An unforgettable experience. Thank you guys and whoever requested this incredible song.🤟😊❤️
Prologue was voiced by E.L.O. drummer Bev Bevan
A favorite album from a favorite band.
Haven't heard this one before either, so it was fun getting to experience the first time listen with you folks. Definitely going to listen to this one again.
I struggle for words to describe the intro. Maybe ethereal and otherworldly? Just the same for Jeff Lynne, the are no words or maybe there are more words than I can think of to describe this musical genius.
Time is by far my favourite ELO album...
Time should be listened from first track to the very last. It is like a grand adventure in song form.
Thank you so much for reacting to ELO's TIME. There are a lot of good songs here. There are some beautiful smooth ballads like "Ticket to the Moon," and "The Rain is Falling". Some finger popping songs like, "The Way Life's meant to be," and the "The Light's Go Down (with a lil elo reggae)." And a few songs with with Electronic energy like "Here Is The News," "Yours Truly, 2095," and "From The End of The World." A dynamite sound from a dynamic band. They brought some new approaches to their music in 1981. ty again.
This has become my favorite album of theirs. It's just like you said- it's trippy! I like their 70s sound, too, with the orchestra. Like the Out of the Blue album.
Check out ELOs "Stranger on a Quiet Street" and "Getting to the Point". I love see younger folks discovering all the great music from my era.
Brilliant tune. Enjoy. Unique: that's what it is. Glad you dug it.Atta girl! Great reaction.
Listen to the whole album in one go...the tracks segue to form a whole story and is quite fantastic...you'll get to the end of the last track thinking " where the hell have i been!"
One of the greatest albums ever made.
their whole "Time" album is such a blast and so cool imo....
One of my favourite albums by ELO. I have the snippet “I have a message from another time” as a text message alert.
This was the first album that fully engrossed me. You two should do a listen to the entire album in order. I've been a fan since the 1970s but was in the 7th grade when this album came out. I lived this whole record for about 2 years and it affected me for the rest of my life.
This is from ELO's Time album and it is a really cool concept album. Almost every track is stacked! It is basically about the lead singer who gets picked up in a space ship and is taken into the future. The problem is he misses his girlfriend ever so. I mean in the future there are only machines that ask is that what you want? The whole album is a message from the future to his girlfriend trying to explain how sad he is that they are separated. Twilight is neither this nor that. It is neither day time nor night time. He adds it is either real or it is a dream there is nothing that is in between - twilight! Of course, twilight is in between. Great song! Great album! You need to give the whole thing a listen! I think you did another song from this album: Hold on Tight, which was a bit of a hit and used in a commercial for coffee. I love You, Sincerely is another great song from this album.
“I Love You, Sincerely “ is a line from the song which they heard the very beginning of after Prologue and Twilight titled “ Yours Truly 2095”. Tremendous song which sets the tone for a superb album; one of my top 10 ever. My roommate and I wore this vinyl out shortly after its release, had it blaring in the barracks on our Air Force base in Alaska in ‘82. This album among others made that remote assignment more bearable.Kudos to Jeff Lynne and ELO!! This album did not get the acclaim it deserved because critics felt it was too much of a departure from the norm. Pity.
@@chuckhutton5087 I agree this is such an under-rated album. It might be too intelligent for mainstream success. It is one of my favorites as well!
Love ELO! I suggest 'One Summer Dream' next choice for them. Great Reaction!
This is my favorite ELO album.
At the time I was a roadie with a huge mobile disco,we started shows with this, sound to light & smoke until the drums came in when we hit the strobes, great timesl😎😎
With ELO being my favorite band, I obviously love whenever you do reactions to them. However to see you do reaction reaction to one of my favorite and one of their best songs is such a treat! This song is so cool and still so ahead of its time and the album it came from is one of their best! And as another comment said- this is a concept album and therefore should be listened to and it’s entirety.
