I saw ELO live seven years ago when I was 10. It was PHENOMENAL. I was very young and very tired but I remember one drunk guy yelling “YOU FUCKING GENIUS MAN” and in my head I was like “yup, that’s it right there”
Oh dear, you can never go wrong with ELO. "Telephone Line" and "The Fall" are my two favorites by them. Then "Evil Woman" and "Shangri-La". I suggest either of them, if you haven't yet.❤

ELO always reminds me of being on vacation. My Mom had ELO Greatest Hits on cassette. We were up in Michigan on vacation and brought a boom box to the beach for the day. Mom popped in ELO while she relaxed on the lounge chair and the rest of us played in the sand. The first side of the tape finished and when she went to flip it, the eject button was jammed. Everything by ELO is gold. The sound so melodic and moving. As a kid I noticed it wasn't always 4x4 standard pop songs, but strange sounds that delighted the ears. My favourite? Mission (A World Record).
"Turn To Stone", was described by Donald A. Guarisco as "a good example of Electric Light Orchestra's skill for mixing string-laden pop hooks with driving rock and roll", praising the "array of swirling string lines that dart in and out of the mix and some dazzling falsetto harmonies that interact with Lynne's lead vocal in call and response style". This song garnered Jeff Lynne a BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) Million-Air certificate for having one million airplays. They took their name because they combined electric rock instruments with orchestral instruments. "Light Orchestras" were small orchestras popular in England in the '60s.
When I was in 5th grade we had a super cool teacher. She would let us bring our records to school to listen to in class on Friday afternoons. I specifically remember someone bringing a 45 of this song and listening to it on one of those Friday afternoons. Good memories! Thanks Miss Hamilton! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
When I was in what must have been the equivalent the 8th or 9th grade? in about 1978 one of our music teachers put Turn to Stone on followed by reggae band Steel Pulse to demonstrate the difference between a more straight rock style of drumming and the variation found in the latter's percussive style. Turn to Stone was a UK hit at the late end of 1977 and a favourite ELO song of one of my closest friends at school. Great song.
It is a futuristic Glam Rock sound. This album would be on repeat waaay back in 1988 when I started my first job. I got to know it very well. From beginning to end it is a classic album with a theme throughout. I love every track. ❤
Ah, how nice to "meet" someone else who has listened enough to OOTB to have noticed that there is a theme (I would actually call it a story) going through all four sides of this magnum opus double album.
Amber hit the nail on the head. The key word is Orchestra. ELO uses everything in the orchestra to make music. Not many groups can do it this good. Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Queen, Beatles. Maybe 1 or 2 others here and there, but that’s about it. Making rock music without featuring guitars is at least unique. Gotta love it! Much love ❤️
Took jeff just 20 minutes to write the whole song ..that's talent...brilliant..love elo as there music i have a lot of great teenage year's of memories ❤😊
I was a child during the 1970's, (born in 1966) and I remember loving all of ELO's songs. But until adulthood, I never knew all of these songs were from the same band because each song was so different.

You've watched many videos by Queen, but I was very surprised to find you haven't watched Queen's performance at Live Aid. This is a must-see. First off…luv u guys. I really enjoy watching ur reactions to such great older music. This music is actually old for me but I enjoy it just the same. Seeing ELO in like 30 days and I can’t wait! I seen someone recommended All Over The World which is a GREAT song but so is Last train to London if u guys haven’t done these yet check them out. I just subscribed but have seen many of ur videos. Keep doing what ur doing. I think u guys have the best reactions to these older songs that I so love from the 70’s to the 90’s. Born in 1974. Child in the 80’s. Teenager late 80’s and 90’s. They don’t make them like they used to.
Bands like ELO make me thankful I'm an early GenX and I got to hear and see so many great bands. We were truly spoiled when it came to music, so many genres with so many great songs. There's still good music around, but you've got to hunt for it, it sure isn't on the radio, lol!
I have been listening to ELO for 50 years, since they released "Eldorado" in 1974. I finally saw Jeff Lynne and ELO play in Boston 9/23/2024. I was brought to tears with some of the songs, especially "Telephone Line" and "Can't Get It Out of my Head". There are few bands of this talent level still touring. Thank you Jeff Lynne & ELO for all your hard work and dedication to bring this beautiful music to the world. And thank you Rob Squad for sharing your reactions, it is interesting to see a whole new generation moved by ELO.
Great Band !! And I've listened to this song for years and still can't sing the " Fast Lyrics " in the middle !! I've tried but I can't keep up !!! Love it !!! 😝 👍👍
I saw ELO live in 1974 when they opened for Deep Purple at the Portland Coliseum. You haven't really felt music until you've heard an electric cello at 110 decibels.
First heard this on a juke box in a pub in the UK and my jaw must have hit the flaw, went straight out and bought the album (vinyl) it is the best album I have ever heard it is a double album and it kept me sane.
Wow, you guys still finding gems. The Beatles had a baby and they named it ELO! Jeff Lynne is is as big as music itself!!! Dig in and you will find. The way he brought Roy Orbison back to significants is just one of his accomplishments. Traveling willburys, heartbreakers, beach boys the Beatles all owe him. Legend.
The first single from this iconic 1977 double album. When Jeff Lynne performs this in concert with his "new" ELO band, the crowd can actually repeat the non-musical verse.
HEY guys the song Telephone line is about a man who wants to pour his heart out to her tell her what he wants to tell her but she won't pick up it's their biggest hit from 1977.
Gawd, this was my childhood! It is a magical song. Many 70s bands made you feel you were off to outerspace - none more than ELO! Jeff Lynne is a genius!
The "Light" in their name is Singular (Electric LIGHT Orchestra). With every song your hear them do, you notice Jeff's genius, from the best ever cover of ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN, to TELEPHONE LINE, MR. BLUE SKY, EVIL WOMAN, etc., etc....
I went to an ELO show in the 70's and they played in the middle of the space ship on the cover the top half lifted and the band was inside it was AWESOME! What a show I got close enough to the stage I strummed Mc Dowells Cello he fretted and I stummed what a time!!
Nostalgia! Early memories of this coming on my dad's FM radio in the garage while he tinkered on his car while I was pushing toys cars around on the floor. Such good vibes!
I was in college when this LP came out and friends and I were freaked out in a good way - double LP, serious jams, great album artwork. Perfect work album. Glad you reacted to this first track!!
My older brothers would go to see ELO in concert and I remember one brother gave me a ride to high school the next day and told me I had to talk loud because he couldn't hear LOL. ELO was so good and so unique, everyone, including me seemed to have this album
I stole this album from my dad when I was 9 years old and played it over and over and over again until I could sing this entire song without any mistakes including the breathless wonder of the bridge. It was soooooo cool that I just had to be able to do it too. Absolutely love ELO!😊
This harkens back to the days when we had tape recorders and if a song played on the radio we'd desperately scramble to hit the record button. I can still remember this playing back in my school days. We were definitely blessed with good music back in the 70s & 80s.
Great band with geart music. The movie "Xanadu" features a lot of their music along with Olivia Newton John and some great oldies. Thanx so much ELO never fails, such fun, stay groovy, Peace
You know, I haven't been on UA-cam as much lately because of work and stuff but I never come away from your reactions disappointed at all. It's always so fun and I've been watching you from very early on in fact, those early ones that J did by himself. Anyway, and I love how you're going off near the end Amber. That's great.
I love when you guys do ELO. Turn To Stone is track 1 from their 1977 masterpiece double album Out Of The Blue. I bought this album when it first came out back in the day. All tracks are really awesome, but I highly recommend songs 10-13. They made up side three of the original double album, and it was called A Concerto For A Rainy Day. I think you guys will really enjoy it.
I saw the tour for this album and it was incredible. Their stage was a giant flying saucer motif where the opening band had to have a separate stage to perform on and then be taken down so E.L.O. could do their show. I'm gonna say it again guys. I have been requesting and waiting on two reactions from you two for several months now. If you guys read the comments then you know what they are. But to recap-by them is "El Dorado (overture) and Can't Get It Out Of My Head". "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" was a hit on it's own but these two go right into each other and it's best to do them that way. It's only a couple of minutes longer and the overture is great, you'll love it.. A more rockin' song by them is "Poker". A more straight ahead rock tune. Of course the other song I want is "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen. I'm gonna keep saying them until you do them.
Out of the blue, an album that has the most amazing artwork (outer cover and inner cover) and amazing music to match. If I had to take only one ELO album to play for the rest of my life (and I have them all) it would be difficult but it would be this album, every track is a gem. Turn to stone, the first track on this album shoots you off to space and from there it just keeps getting better and better. It was this very single that got me in to Electric Light Orchestra way back in 1977. A very good year for music.
This was the first music I purchased with my hard-earned money when I was a teenager. After hearing "Telephone Line" I couldn't wait to purchase this 45 from the store. I still love this song to this day. Great memories of my youth with this classic ELO song. Ironically "Star Wars" came about the same time, so they are intertwined in my mind for eternity.
I was in middle school when this album came out and my first serious boyfriend brought it over to my house so excited and played it for me. The sound was so different from the music the older kids had been listening to, the Led Zep and Pink Floyd, it really felt like we were hearing something clean and new and futuristic.
They were one of the first bands to incorporate synthesizers and it not sound cheesy. They had normal Rock n roll instruments but added in the synthesizer sound that could create and expound any musical instrument. Def legends...this to me is one of their best songs and it came out during a time that disco was running the show so it was so refreshing honestly. I was in 8 th grade at the time this album came out and I was a rocker and was very resentful that disco ruled the airwaves at that time.
This is always a favourite at their live performances and that central vocal section always gets a massive response from the audience. See their live performance of this track on UA-cam
ELO is so unique. I always loved their music. Mr Blue Sky is my fav of their songs. Also Livin Thing, Telephone Line, Rockaria, All Over the World. And this one. It’s like they picked up where the Beatles left off and took it in their own direction. I love their rock band cello section. That’s one of my fav instruments. So I love how ELO incorporated that in their sound so beautifully
This was the song that introduced me to ELO back in 77 or 78 I believe. I was hooked by the bright sound, positive vibes and many different instruments that weren't what I thought a rock group would use. Also, I was so impressed by their vocals. I must have listened to this one song two dozen times that first day I heard it. So glad you guys enjoyed it! Peace!
I recommend the video of this song at ELO's concert ''Live at Wembley Stadium.'' The impact of 40,000 people enjoying this concert makes this song unforgettable.
One of their most-well crafted songs ever. I'm never one to gush over ELO (I admire them rather than enthuse), but you'd have to be MADE of stone not to like this one.
Great reaction ~~ My brother just bought tickets today for us for ELO in Chicago in September!!! I am so excited I can hardly stand it! The next 6 months is going to be like a kid waiting for Christmas! Woohoo!!!!
Ha, Ha, Ha! Gonna say, lots of fun. Ho! There's footage out there of live ELO where the string players lift their instruments over their heads and keep right on playing. That's flair. Thank you!
There are no bad ELO songs. Every one of them are loved. There is one song you guys should hear called All Over the World. ❤

Of course the other song I want is "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen. I'm gonna keep saying them until you do them.
The BEST Electric Band w/ Light Orchestra ever!!! ELO ROCKS!!!!!!
I listened to ELO on an 8 track. 😁
Then you may have heard some of the songs in the wrong order... 8-o
Had 8 tracks, but not theirs. I switched to albums and recording those on cassettes.
One of my faves is their instrumental...Fire on High...
I'm going to see Electric light orchestra in October in Knoxville
This was the first music I purchased with my hard-earned money when I was a teenager. After hearing "Telephone Line" I couldn't wait to purchase this 45 from the store. I still love this song to this day. Great memories of my youth with this classic ELO song. Ironically "Star Wars" came about the same time, so they are intertwined in my mind for eternity.
Jeff Lynne is incredible. Hot band ELO👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
ELO is all of the musical instruments not to mention Jeff lynne's voice is amazing you can always recognize it
My first and favorite ELO song. Brings me back to 7th Grade.❤️🎶
This is always a favourite at their live performances and that central vocal section always gets a massive response from the audience. See their live performance of this track on UA-cam
Out of the Blue is an awesome album. So many great seventies albums. This is another one. ❤
From the ages of 7-10 I played this album almost every day until my mum gave in and I got to see them live haha!
...'Turn to Stone' is the ultimate song for the experience of roller skating 🛼🛼 ....haha
IN my opinion....that is to say....
This song is the opener to one of the best albums ever. Stunning!
Glad you guys finally checked this tune out, one of the best concerts I ever went to.
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius!
Ahh, the "Son of the Beatles", love them. ELO has so many good songs I can't even name my favorites.
Peace!
Jeff Lynne's musical chops cannot be denied. Greatness all round.
I LOVE ELO! One of my top for sure.
Great song and group! Jeff Lynn joined the Traveling Wilburies! ❤❤
Jeff LYNNE helped form the Travelling Wilburys
I recommend the video of this song at ELO's concert ''Live at Wembley Stadium.'' The impact of 40,000 people enjoying this concert makes this song unforgettable.
LOVE this one. One of my absolute favs by ELO.
When I was a kid back in the 70's they used to play a lot of ELO at our local roller rink.
Woohoo!!!!
No need to skip tracks on any ELO albums they’re brilliant 🎻🪕🎹🎼🎤🎸
Ha, Ha, Ha! Gonna say, lots of fun. Ho! There's footage out there of live ELO where the string players lift their instruments over their heads and keep right on playing. That's flair. Thank you!
Telephone line gets my vote for next ELO song. Great reaction as always
I've always loved the intro, and that bridge/breakdown is to die for!!!
Great way to start the evening love this song💞
