"It felt good to go back to a time where figuring things out was part of the process" I feel like I've been itching for this for a long time, very excited about this game
Good review but one thing is a little wrong: many of these games do in fact follow modern trends heavily. You would not see Party House on the NES, since it's a poker inspired roguelike, which is a style that has only recently become trendy. Pilot Quest takes strong inspiration from games like Cookie Clicker and Minecraft, and Zeldoth is like a quirky homage to no mans sky. Rock On Island is Bloons, and so on. And that's what's so cool about the collection, it's like "what if most modern game genres and trends were invented at the same time in the 80s?"
i had a pirate cd called 300 games, it had about 50 nes, sega saturn and some other random games on it, this just feels so nostalgic for me i really want to buy it
Yes. After a minute or two of figuring out what kind of game it was and what the little icons meant, it suddenly clicked and Avianos instantly became one of my favorites. That said, I've still got over 30 more games in the collection to try but Avianos was a standout for sure.
Most retraux have something or other making it easier than the real thing but this looks like the opposite problem. I mean since when did we need to match 3 to get power ups? As one example. Might be more fun at least.
Imo, the "Save" feature that a lot of emulators have, where you can literally save to a point in your playthrough and restart the game just as you were at that point, was the much needed upgrade for retro games because it gives you the ability to practice tough sections without the need to go through everything that came before. A game shouldn't necessarily autosave but at least give players the option to do it themselves if they want to. I'm the kind of person that loses interest if I need to play the same section too many times over and there's a sea of other games to try out. + you don't know if the game will be feeling any rewarding after beating that section you got consistently stuck at, so it's a gamble of your time and I'd rather not gamble it on the same 10 minutes of level intro over and over again.
@@KampKoji maybe a limited amount of save states per run, and it disables getting Gold and Cherry carts. On emulators I always just put save states at the start of levels, or after a tough section if I didn't get healing, and with the way these are designed I don't think it'd affect stuff that much if we had 5 saves per run
@@schmity007This is the kind of thing that should be reserved for after you beat a game. The pacing is as intended the way they have it set up, with saving on games where it's appropriate
Good review and very underrated channel, but if I can politely offer a small criticism: I do think you harped on the same point for a lot of the video. You essentially stated that "the games were true to 80's games in style and difficulty, which some will love and some will hate" multiple times. When scripting videos like this I think it's a good idea to have chapters for each core aspect of the game you think they did well or did poorly.

Boy, do I have a game to recommend you then! TUNIC. That’s the most “the pleasure is in figuring stuff out” game this side of Outer Wilds.

rock on island is not bloons, its more of a classic Tower Defence
Great points and insight! Thanks for sharing

2:25 That's something that I find very interesting about this game, like Avianos is likely my favorite game in UFO50 so far
I definitely get the appeal. I'm just not a fan of the genre but that's 1 great thing about this game. Something for everyone

I think save states would've messed with the experience but I totally understand where you're coming from
Also, save states allow you to practice certain sections where you struggle and get ready for the "real" run. It's something really necessary.
It definitely needs something like that

Chapters are huge i love channels thT use the feature
Great feedback, Thanks. Would you mind sharing a UA-cam review that you enjoyed that does what you describe? Appreciate it.
@@KampKoji check out kingk, his does retrospectives not reviews, but he sections off the videos into distinct sections
