Yah, but did anyone actually buy Action 52? I mean, when it was released, not decades later to be ironic. It was like, what, 2 or 3 times the cost of a regular NES cart and you had to mail away for it? I never saw that game in the wild and only ever heard of it once the internet got a hold of it.

I think the entire concept behind Mooncat is that it is a retro game with confusing controls that forces the player to re-wire their brain and really explore what different combinations of two buttons can do. I think the idea is that it was made at a time when the public awareness of video game controls didn't exist yet and there was no standard for what A, B, and directional pad "had to" do.
I like this. I also think that it's a game about how it feels to play a game when you aren't hardwired to "get" control schemes. Like most people who play UFO 50 will have played a great many games and be able to pick up a game's controls pretty fast. Mooncat forces you to experience what you felt like before you were already ingrained.

I really liked Grimstone. The Fineal Fantasy inspired game that is clearly named after Grimrock. It somehow managed to be full jrpg style game with something like 8-10 ish characters you can pick to make up your party. Sure, it is on the short side for a jrpg, but that is still double digit hours length. The weapons needed a little work, mainly the pistols are just so overpowered, but it manages to balance the feel pretty well and pretty much eliminates the need to grind with how fast the money, power scalling, and levelling happens. It is just so well balanced, if you ever found yourself unable to beat a dungeon pretty much that single failed attempt itself will likely be enough to make you powerful enough to get it next time. And if you want to grind and make the game easy, spend half an hour and you will be so overleveled the next 4 hours of game play will be threat less. Some of others, even when good, are pretty content sparse. I know some people really like the bushito ball, but you can beat it in about 10 minutes. I really agree with the obtuse statment. While it is realistic, arguably these games could of came with small digital manuals to explain what to do in some of these. Why does the game still not have a cover on youtube?

Game compilations like these means you can make really difficult games without having to appeal too much to modern audiences. Games like Barbuta, Caramel Caramel, and Cyber Owls don't feel the need to use unlimited continues. From what I've seen, people don't really mind since they have tons of other games to choose from, so they feel like missing out on a select few games isn't really that big of a deal. I think that's great since you can introduce true retro games to a newer audience who are interested in them without having to pander to people who aren't with savestates and such.
I honestly do appreciate that they dared to include a few VERY experimental games that might not be to most people's liking. Drunk's knowledge of sports history continues to impress....i've never even heard of Roy Campanella until now (and i've been watching baseball since the 80s).
I was looking forward to your review on this game and it was very spot on. It all made sense when you mentioned the 8 years of development, devs really wanted to make more than 50 memorable experiences than just milking nostalgia ✌🏼
I was excited and waiting for you to get to this! Considering just how experienced you are with classic games, I've been looking forward to your impression. Glad to hear you enjoy it. I got two questions- 1, do you think that the obscurity of some of the game mechanics are intentional to mimic that tendency of classic games? And 2, does it seem like to you that these games were made with tighter constraints than other retro throwbacks? For instance, Shovel Knight is an obvious throwback, but it also doesn't commit to certain color/performance constraints of its era.
I hope you make another video on UFO 50 because this collection is so massive with lots to discover and enjoy. It takes a ton of time just to try them all and then more time to get into each one.
The whole self exploration thing is clearly a part of the gameplay loop. There's mechanics that feel like a massive "Aha" moment for figuring them out. Like the warps in Campenella, or how some of the skills in Grimstone work. (I was ecstatic when I randomly tried to use heal on a dead party member on the map and it worked)
You do know that's WHY people enjoy the aesthetic, right? Also if you never cared for the PS1, I think that might make you one of the saddest people on earth. I don't even know how someone can live this way.
I think something that didn't quite get articulated in the review was the fact that the developers all went in with the limitations of the fake UFO console in mind. There's a whole optional backstory to everything providing context for the games. The first game doesn't have music or any feedback when you hit an enemy. But UFO 50 quickly teaches you to appreciate when games have been developed with modern ideas like idle games or rogue-lites, and when the games are more clunky or inscrutable to be more authentic to their era. It's a real love letter to game history.
Never thought that the spirit of Action 52 has touched so many inspiring future developers and programmers to make a successor but better than its predecessor.
I know it would have tacked on another year or so in development time but I think having semi fleshed out manuals would have been amazing for an immersive package such as this. Just like a four page black and white booklet for every game to scroll through to get the gist of things as though that manual was your ticket to success and all your friends had to just figure it out for themselves when you made copies of the game on 3.5" floppy disk. I don't think the point of the collection is to be obtuse but without more direction it can sometimes feel like a curated rom pack rather than a lovingly rescued collection of ancient games.
Pilot Quest lets you gain crystals as you're playing other games - you're supposed to come back to it periodically while you play other games. It's actually my favorite game of the bunch.
this feels so much like retro game challenge for the nds (highly recommended if any of you missed), which is one of my favorites of all time. gonna test this one for sure, but so far the visuals all look the same. i know it's probably on purpose and there are slight differences, but i takes out from the 'back in the 80s' roleplay, i think. retro game challenge gets the nostalgia feeling so damn right, though. but this one looks amazingly fun anyway.
Good review! This quite amazing! I would have thought it would have taken them longer than 8 years to develop so many different game styles! Very impressive! They look like lost NES games. I definitely will have to check this out on my ever-growing Steam backlog! 😅
I have this idea for a let’s play where I pretend that I found my old recordings of me playing these games in 2000s where retro wave became a trend I even talk slow and weird like people used to
See, now that I've heard the concept in advance I'd be super-into it... but it would also require a really good improv-style to sound so "authentically clunky" and still be an interesting watch overall. And if I went in blind, would I "get" the joke or just find it obnoxious? It's a risky move... but I would be interested to see someone make it.
Honestly would love to see a SNES version of this now. And it's weird, because I honestly don't have that much fun playing games on my PC via steam and an Xbox controller and such these days, but I would so love to be able to play this as a digital download for my SNES Mini or something like that.
This has been such a big year for RPGs I've barely had time for new stuff in other genres or surprises like this. But what's nice is this game's already priced lower than a lot of those.
This is definitely a great recommend again SNES drunk. There's so many great retro style games out these days it's easy to miss really good ones even. Have you by chance come across Beyond Shadowgate yet? Sequel made 35 years after the NES port of the game Shadowgate. Or Isles of Sea and Sky which rocks a GBC aesthetic. Veritus has that too, but is more like TLoZ on speed.
I bought Ufo 50 the day it came out and personally I think it 100% deserves every praise it got. Sure, there are a couple of misses in the collection such as Combatants, but overall the average quality is very high and it's also quite cheap for what it offers. For the record my favourite games are Avianos, Rail Heist and Warptank. For Mortolia! *dies*
This is my game of the year and I've played like only 1/3 of the games so far lol

I just did a large cleanup where I unfollowed 90% of the people I subscribed to on UA-cam. You were definitely not one of them.
I was looking forward to your review on this game and it was very spot on. It all made sense when you mentioned the 8 years of development, devs really wanted to make more than 50 memorable experiences than just milking nostalgia ✌🏼
This is going on my wishlist. Thanks for the suggestion 😊!
This was even nominated as best indie game for the gaming awards this year, I'm going to vote for it.
I have been watching you for a few years now. You deserve a lot more views and subs.
I want to thank you for making this video and I hope YOU have a great rest of your day.
Next, do a Steamdrunk review of Rivals of Aether 2.
Yo dude, welcome back!
I really need to check UFO 50 out, I love the idea of a collection of new "old" games
Glad you are back!
Fun Fruits tree. Whoa, now there's a deep dive!
YOU GOT FOOTAGE OF ALFRED AND THE FETTUC?!
I hope you make another video on UFO 50 because this collection is so massive with lots to discover and enjoy. It takes a ton of time just to try them all and then more time to get into each one.
They really need to release this on the Switch
The whole self exploration thing is clearly a part of the gameplay loop. There's mechanics that feel like a massive "Aha" moment for figuring them out. Like the warps in Campenella, or how some of the skills in Grimstone work. (I was ecstatic when I randomly tried to use heal on a dead party member on the map and it worked)
I love all your sports references. Im not into sports, but it lets your personality and interests show
I really like the unique games you cover sometimes, even if it's not on the SNES.
I’m sold! Gonna download this on my Steam Deck asap!
Glad you pointed out the jagged graphics of the PS1
Even during it's og run I never care for the PS1
You do know that's WHY people enjoy the aesthetic, right?
Also if you never cared for the PS1, I think that might make you one of the saddest people on earth. I don't even know how someone can live this way.
glad you did this review. definitely going to have to get a copy of it.
this looks awesome. hopefully it will come to playstation or switch platforms
Thanks for making this video and I hope you also have a great rest of your day. (and weekend!)
WHOA i just bought this last night & I'm already hooked
The games you dissed are some of my favorites... they're not obtuse at all!
I'd love to see a conversion to retroconsole for this. Probably have to be Mega Drive or SNES though.
Welcome back! Thanks for another great video.
Wow! This looks really cool. I'll be keeping my eye out to see if this gets ported to PS or Xbox.
Missed your voice. Glad you hit my algo again
Thought about picking this up to play on stream... Now I must!
waiting for switch port , way more comfy then sitting on my desktop
This reminds me of the game Retro Game Challenge for the DS. I always wished there were more of those. This might be the next best thing!!
I have this idea for a let’s play where I pretend that I found my old recordings of me playing these games in 2000s where retro wave became a trend
I even talk slow and weird like people used to
See, now that I've heard the concept in advance I'd be super-into it... but it would also require a really good improv-style to sound so "authentically clunky" and still be an interesting watch overall. And if I went in blind, would I "get" the joke or just find it obnoxious? It's a risky move... but I would be interested to see someone make it.
Roy Campanella gets a shout out! SNES drunk is a Man of Culture!
Came for the games stayed for the Roy Campanella facts.
Honestly would love to see a SNES version of this now.
And it's weird, because I honestly don't have that much fun playing games on my PC via steam and an Xbox controller and such these days, but I would so love to be able to play this as a digital download for my SNES Mini or something like that.
So glad to see you do some videos on these forgotten LX classics, I know 1980s games aren't exactly your wheelhouse
Cool stuff, should be on Switch!
This has been such a big year for RPGs I've barely had time for new stuff in other genres or surprises like this. But what's nice is this game's already priced lower than a lot of those.
Great, fair review! This game seems like quite an achievement.
Gameplay aside, Cheetamen actually had some really dope chiptunes though 😆
I bought Ufo 50 the day it came out and personally I think it 100% deserves every praise it got. Sure, there are a couple of misses in the collection such as Combatants, but overall the average quality is very high and it's also quite cheap for what it offers. For the record my favourite games are Avianos, Rail Heist and Warptank.
For Mortolia! *dies*
He's back!
I had soo much fun playing Mortal 1!! Best hours spent
