Insults and a haka in New Zealand parliament as MPs debate Māori rights bill ► www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/14/nz-parliament-maori-rights-bill-mps-debate-haka-new-zealand
It's not a Māori rights bill - academics, courts and precedence know the rights. This is someone throwing a tantrum (Seymour) cos his backers don't like the status quo (IMO of course)
Because it takes away their special treatment and all the free funding and money they get. They have more rights than any KIWI does regardless of where they come from.
Because the changes would reverse decades of efforts to cause the repayment for lands (the size of the UK) being taken from Maori people by massacre, plunder, cheating and stealing. I totally support Maori people in calling that Te Tiriti O Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) is respected, rather than watered down/largely destroyed as was proposed in the paper she ripped up.
@@addisonsteiner6473 don't listen to the ai bots. No they want to remove our indigenous rights so we they can have their equal rights. Most brought in over the COVID period would love this, and we had a huge influx. That is government long game. They've been doing it for ages. Now since more research has been conducted it seems the Treaty and TeTiriti are two different things. Sovereignty was not ceeded. Those early pioneers have history which denies the plausibility of the "treaty" in essence we are still Sovereign in our own jurisdiction. That of the united tribes of Aotearoa NZ. So David who represents the largest foreign investors. Has attempted to end the debate all by himself. Hope that makes sense.
I feel like a lot of international views might be missing a lot of the context the average NZers have. In 1840, there was a treaty signed between the British crown and the Māori people, the indigenous people of New Zealand. That treaty offered various protections and guarantees to Māori. In exchange, the Māori allowed the crown to setup their own government in NZ that would work in partnership with Māori. Now one of our political parties, Act, has introduced the Treaty Principles Bills. The bill aims to change how the treaty is interpreted. However, their a few issues with this: - One party to the treaty (the crown) is trying to change the treaty without agreement from the other party (Māori). - The bill uses language like "equality for all" however in practice it removes everything promised to Māori under the treaty. Hence why it's been called a trojan horse. - Māori have historically and currently not been served well by the crown so they value the protections promised by the crown a lot. - The bill effectively clams the crown has complete sovereignty because of the treaty. The crown does have sovereignty now but that's because it was taken by force. Māori never ceded sovereignty in the treaty or anywhere else. Failing to recognise this is very upsetting to many and makes it hard to resolve many present-day issues caused by this. Nobody really supports it other than the Act party that got 8% of the vote. The prime mister didn't even attend the reading and there are protests all over the country. However, it past it's 1st reading yesterday because of a coalition agreement.
