Photographing Assynt, when the elements attack! Landscape Photography Assynt

- Photographing Assynt, Landscape Photography in Assynt. In this video, I head up North to capture some Landscape Photographs of Assynt. If you watched the trailer I released earlier this week you would have noticed the weather was really against us. And I mean really against us.
Part 1 of 4 • Photographing Assynt, ...
Part 2 of 4 • Creating pictures wort...
Part 3 of 4 • Outstanding Landscape ...
Part 4 of 4 • Landscape Photography ...
Before we arrived at Assynt I ran one of my thrice-annual Workshops at Glencoe. The elements were horrid then and 5 days later it was still awful. Wind and horizontal rain were clearly the special on Scotlands weather menu!
The Experience of Landscape Photography
WATCH IT HERE: • Experience of Landscap...
In this instance, there are just 2 things you can do, sit it out or get out! Obviously, we opted for the latter.
I didn't make a vlog whilst at Glencoe so I have included some of my favourites from the week to the end of this video. 10 in total. I will add another 10 to parts 2 and 3 of this Assynt trilogy.

Brilliant vid Gary enjoyed it very much theres nothing quite like taking photos in Scotland just love my homeland 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Brian 👍👍
Really fantastic to hear about your interview with Mike Browne. Undoubtedly one of the nicest photographers and UA-cam personalities I've ever come across.
I've just finished the edit. It'll be out soon
Hi mate. Fantastic set of shots. My favourite was the Red Deer. To stop your feet from getting wet wear waterproof shocks in your boots. then you will keep to dry and not slip.
Vincent Spratling top tip. I ordered some yesterday 😁😁 I was thinking the same
What an amazing photographer you are and your photoprocessing is 2nd to none. I don’t understand how people can sit in front of the TV watching soaps when these programs like yours on UA-cam love watching you Gary as always you are definitely a larger-than-life character would you like to meet you one day.
Only one word….AMAZING!!!!!!
Thank you xx
Just fantastic!
You manage to deliver even when the elements are against you. Exceptional.
Richie.
Congratulations Gazza on bringing up the 50k ! What a windy adventure up there in Assynt wonderful images throughout particularly liked the Buachaille shot with the river and the trees. Great choice of music too transported me 12,000 miles to The Highlands! 👍
Cheers Carl. I'm guessing you're living in a less weathered country then? 😊😊
Great video can’t wait for part two. Gorgeous images. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Wonderful video , incredible location , superb images particularly in black and white
Thank you Richard
love your videos gary, keep em coming, massive respect at being out in all weathers to make these great vids.
Entertaining as ever, inspirational as ever..loved it..as ever. Great stuff again Mr Gough 👍
Another great vlog Gary thank you, I understand your meaning about a slap in the face, I work in a factory and I’m surrounded with negativity and bosses wanting more and more so when the weather turns poor we don’t get out even to be in the moment in nature with nature, thank you, and thank you for sharing
Cheers John. I've worked in similar environments and it's not good. This is why I said what I said. I was constantly moaning and yet I didn't really have anything to moan about. Cheers John 👍👍
Great pictures. All of them.
Thank you again 👍👍
Wow what a music you've got.
The images are super. I'l like them !!!
Thank you
WOW❗️❗️❗️Absolutely Stunning and some amazing images to boot. Well done Gary, great to watch
Cheers Brian 👍👍
All wonderful images as usual. I particularly loved the deer on the hill and the sheep but the first 2 water scenes were also beautiful.
Got the notification this morning and couldn't wait for lunch time to watch the video! Great video and the pics as always! Now I can't wait for the next two episodes! Don't keep us hanging Gary, release the videos! :-)
Thank you Eric
Great video Gary, the shot at 16:34 is my favorite!!! Looking forward to part II
Sander - Thanks for watching. Cheers
Gary Love your work you are some kind of master in post.
Wheels in the sea Awesome bloody Awesome Tractor in there field best colour
Very hard to choose nice one Gary!!!!!
Very well put Gary. Fantastic location. As you say you could be in far worse places like in a hospital bed. You enjoy it wish I had the same chance.Stonking images.
I, like many photographers, seem to moan for the sake of moaning. As you said, you could be in a hospital bed. It was a wake-up call for me indeed.
Cheers for this guys, its on my bucket list to visit, with any luck I'll be up there for the autumn. You have given me an idea for my trip next month to the Isle of Skye, star trails over the cottage we are staying in, thanks
Cheers Phil. The images are much better on part 2 out tomorrow
Gary, what can/should I say: great conditions, great pictures!!!!!🤩 I like your videos and start immediately the next one. 😎😳🤓👍👍👍👍
Very kind of you to say, thank you xx
Simply brilliant Sir, again I am in awe. I really appreciate that you show us the real side of what happens when the stars are NOT aligned.. :) My favorites yes there's more than one - would be the wheels in B&W for sure and then colored tractor. Most favorite were the seascapes earlier in video tho--waiting in anticipation of the next 2 videos
Thanks again xx
Despite the weather, it looked like a really fun trip. Another enjoyable vlog as always
Great video. Some grand images. Showing the ‘bad’ and good side of landscape photography - great stuff.
Thank you Michael 👍👍
Amazing Photographer !!!
In my opinion, one of your best yet Gary. Its not all about capturing the epic shots with great light (which we all wish for), its about the landscape, the conditions and the sheer effort that goes into trying to capture magic. Some times 'dark light' can provide for better photos. Coigach is a great photo location when the weather is kind, but I've had some even better photos in storm light from that area. That's the wildest I've seen Achnahaird Bay. The Glen Coe shoot worked out well, particularly the shots from the Devil's Staircase, the Big Boochle and Lochan na h-Achlaise (lochan nakalasa). Great vlog - regards.
Cheers John. Glad you enjoyed the video, thank you 👍👍
Great to see how you, Tony, Gaz and Buddy got on at Assynt but gutted for you that the conditions continued to be so harsh after our time in Glencoe. Regards to all!
It gets worse Steve :(
Thanks Gary, this is yet another location to add to my list when I visit The Outer Hebrides in the Spring.
Really enjoy watching your vlogs, I’m not a pro photographer, or landscape photographer, just an enthusiast learning from people like yourself.Im hoping I can come home with some shots that I can be pleased with, I’m even looking forward to some wind and rain !! Looking forward to your next destination.
Cheers Paul. Hope the weather's fine for your trip up North :)
Wow, THAT Waterfall, THOSE crashing waves, the Rocks, Cliffs. the Pano at 22:24 The ship at 23:33 !! Epic - just EPIC!! Great stuff Gary, looking forward to the next instalment
Bamber Photos - cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Gary, I like your stories and as well the result of your landscape photography - great compositions. Thanks for sharing!
Best regards from the Munich area in the south of Germany.
Cheers Josef 👍👍
Great video - I love Assynt. I found getting the images I wanted difficult, as you did.
1spitfirepilot It’s an amazing place. Better images to come 👍🏻👍🏻
Another cool 😎 vlog Gary with some beautiful images, keep them coming my friend, cheers Davy 😎🤙🏻
david fisher Cheers Dave. How’s things,?we’ve not spoken in a while?
Gary Gough thanks Gary, not bad mate, being Scottish but living in Turkey 🇹🇷 it’s great to watch yourself and other vlogers enjoying my homeland, I’m back in March for 10 days but it’s a family visit so you guys keep up the good work and stop me getting homesick 😩😂😉🤙🏻
that was brilliant gary, this is going to be a cracking series, being persistant certainly pays off as you took those amazing images especially the rusty wheels in the waters edge, my favourite
Cheers Jim 👍👍
Man that's such a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing
You're welcome, cheers
@@GaryGough you're welcome! We really enjoy making these types of videos as well
Thank you very much for sharing, Gary, I really enjoyed this. We are going back to Lochinver in May so this was very inspirational. I hope our weather is kinder. Though you got some great shots despite the conditions.
Thank you John 👍👍
Gary you are a true inspiration to us all, your wise words and the dedication you put in truly pays off, your images from assynt and Glencoe are amazing this is why I love your channel and your work🙏 congratulations on the 50k subs aswell 🍻👍
Comments like this just make it all so worthwhile. Cheers Chris 👍👍
Well you showed that it is still possible to make good images in some very poor weather conditions. I was up there last year with my son and we also had some mixed fortunes with the weather but the area is just full of beauty. Definitely on my list of places to return to. The rusty axle shots don't do it for me, but the mono of the tree and Stach Pollach and the Summer Isles definitely capture the sense of the place. Like the selfie by the falls too!
The wheels were just a bit of fun :) Cheers Steve 👍👍
Nice one Gary - you had brutal conditions and got some superb shots...looking forward to parts 2 & 3... & congrats on the 50K...
Thank you John
Fantastic video Gary. I am lucky enough to live 5 mins from the Seaham wheels I go down there regularly
smashing vlog Gary
Cheers Rich 👍👍
👍 very enjoyable, and will serve as a reminder of a great trip! Very extreme conditions and still managed to up the enthusiasm and humour and produce some great images, a true professional, I think it was the pies that kept you going!
gary beaumont - I’m sure it’s still your round lol. Cracking trip and the better shots are still to come 👍🏻👍🏻 Ready for the next adventure?
Gary Gough I’m already planning something Scottish for April....but if I can tempt your down here before then I’ll treat you to a Cornish pasty....
Some adventure that was!! GGTV at its best! Like watching a beeb docu! But with something worth while, great photography. I’d be like a dog with two doo daas shooting here! You looked knackered, a very honest and emotional vlog. Really enjoyed! Huge congratulations on hitting 50k!! Amazing achievement.
Love the horse issue very funny.
Cheers
Well done on 50k. Another quality video
Thought I was watching a Bear Grylls survival video at times! Congrats on your tenacity and the wonderful shots that you took. Inspirational!
Darrel 😁 very kind, thank you
Fair play to you troopers, dedication alright, the commentary in the blistering rain and the pony shots, hilarious......
nice video Gary, particular liked the image at 22.16, fantastic! looking forward to the next two in the series

Cheers Murray xx
Brilliant! The resulting pics are absolutely marvellous. I live in The Netherlands and weather conditions sometimes are quite similar. Not that harsh but I'm familiar with rain and winds! Your vlog is an inspiration to go out whatever the weather throws out you. Cheers!
Fantastic video Gary, you get 50k subs and I get 50 brilliant.Seriously Gary really loved this started following you about a year ago and videos like this are the reason I keep watching, A gough classic.
John H Pettigrew and it’s comments like yours that just make it all so worthwhile. Cheers John 👍🏻👍🏻
@@GaryGough Come to Canada, I can promise you a fantastic time with landscapes to die for, and it's not in the Rockies. I could probably get you some free accomodation.
Great vlog Gary, been viewing your vlogs a lot, lots of good photography and laughs, I have done a few vlogs from up that way myself, what a beautiful place to be in any weather. blowing a hoolie lol. well it's about time I subscribed so there you go have another one from me bud.
Very kind Ian, thank you. Consider your kindness reciprocated. I'm looking forward to following you too, cheers
Very nice pics, considering the weather conditions.
Cheers 👍👍
Sweet images ole bean!
Cheers Gordon
Great again. Looking forward to your interview with Mike Browne. Ye are two of the best. He'll have you riding a motorcycle if you're not careful
lol I'm definitely happy to be bracketed with Mike any day. Very kind of you to say.
Nice black and white there and that horse was a cutie
they are all great can't make up my mind which is the best but I seem to the B&W & lowlight images
Thank you Ernest 👍👍
Gary, hello and greetings from Alabama. I have just found your channel and I'm loving it. Forgive me I will have missed someone, but between you, @TimDay, @NigelDanson, @KimGrant I miss the UK. I was stationed there in the early 80's (RAF Upper Heyford. I only wish I had traveled and explored more while I was there. Look forward to seeing more of your great videos and photos. Cheers!
I was in the RAF in the 80's too :) Glad you liked the video.
cracking vlog you cant beat a good storm lol
lol cheers Mark
Fantastic images and video Gary. I'm for Glencoe in May. Perhaps cover Assynt also.
It's a great place Jim but in my opinion it looks better further north. I'm further north in the next video
Thanks Gary Look forward to watching it.
@@GaryGough Durness to just past Tounge is magical
That place takes no prisoners Gary, well done
Cheers David. The images on Part II are much better too
First! Greetings Gary from Chile! Keep up your nice work! 🇨🇱
Thank you from the UK :)
Every time I see a close up of the dog I imagine he is thinking "These pair have lost it. Only lunatics would venture out in this weather" :) Great shots though!
Best liked photos: Pair of backlit sheep, and 3rd photo in Glencoe series (rock in snow)
Hahaha that horse! 😍
lol gets me everytime
Jeez..the dog looked none too chuffed..lol
lol It was a sympathy look :)
A slap in then face helps to restore the blood circulation when in Assynt and its blowing a gale and raining non-stop. There are worse places to be than the far north of Scotland in weather like that, I am just not sure that I can name them right now 😊. A great video though.
Thanks Gary. Currently on Skye getting hammered by storm Denis so I need this moral boost.
It's not good is it Colin :(
I hope everything turned out just fine for you. Cheers xx
16:25 Image of the house was the most powerful image!
Cheers Dan
The image at 16:07 is what I like most. I do think you could go even closer on the black rocks...making them even more prominent. And the last pano with the road and the clear mountains in the back could prove very tasty!
Some nice images considering the awful conditions, did you forget the to take the drone lol
lol I couldn't bare to lose 3 of them :)
nice vlog and photo`s again gary, the horse part was so funny...
Patrick de Flandre - cheers Patrick. Highlight of the day 😁😁
Just putting a link to this in my blog (hope you dont mind) and on re watching this, saw the comment about the conundrum of hiking boots or wellies... I have a set of fab neoprine wellies with vibram (hiking) soles..several brands now make these, so do try them out if you get the chance...they proved to be an awesome addition to my kit!! (no idea if you still monitor comments on old posts..but hope you do!)
If I caught it correctly you said you couldn't find those "wheels" in the NE, they are on a place called Chemical Beach, just south of Seaham Harbour, if you Google "chemical beach wheels" you'll find them, not an easy place to get to though over the very large boulders, but there is plenty of parking above the beach. PS, loved the blog.
I know Les, I've been there 3 times but each time the tide was at it's lowest but clearly not low enough :) I didn't realise at the time that the low tide has to be really low or the wheels aren't visible. I know now though :)
@@GaryGough Yes it's all a matter of timing, low tide, together trying to time it with a sunrise.................bloody impossible LOL
Finally, a tractor in an image!
My favourite from the video :)
You are a braver man than me gunga din. Lovely music, what was it?
Thanks Lance 👍
Wind and Rain in the highlands of Scotland? Never!! LOL.
lol Cheers
Hey Gary, what do you do when you need inspiration, from brain lock. Man I got it bad Gary. You videos do so much to help.
Jesus C.. that was outrageous conditions pal
It get's worse :)
for us non English speakers, what is a Wholey?
As Sticks said. I'm not sure if it's origins are Scottish? but that's what it means. Cheers
Come further North!
I'm further North on the next video Hamish 👍👍
Cape Wrath?
Does it ever not rain in the UK?
It never rains in Scotland, but sometimes it stops 😂🤣😊
That was on hill of an uphill trip bud....
I would be happy with them on my walls. the star trail photos great, I have a challenge for you pu both your 10 and 15 stop on for a photo.
If the unfiltered exposure was 1/8000s, 25 stops of light block would give a 1 hour exposure 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@davidellinsworth22 that would be some challenge but sure Gary can make something work. 🤦♂️😂
I watched the video twice not only because of the amazing photos or the amazing locations, but also because of the style and the perfectly chosen background music! The photo of the house at the end of the video and the photos of the. Light house, the tree and the ship are all stunning! Wish to see more like this one! 👌👌
I love Assynt, unlike your dog who had a look of murderous intent, I'd keep it away from the knives if I where you!👍😂
Love the b/w images but not sure about the bagpipe "music"....
Point taken Brian 👍👍
The dog seems to not share the enthusiasm in the windy and cold weather. That horse felt the warmth of the car and would have liked to share some space. How can you shoot in such a windy weather, and cold?
Fantastic content and effort mate, very funny in parts too, But Gary sort that music out its proper annoying haha
James Howarth it’s proper Scottish 😁😁
@@GaryGough haha yeah it is matey
Agree - some good photos despite the atrocious weather! You managed to keep smiling, probably because you were not listening to the repetitive dirge. Looking forward to the next blog, but do hope you have found some new music by then.
The second image
Giddie up !.......Lol
lol I still find it funny :)
Hint use plastic bags over dry sock then slip feet into boots
Well maybe I need to take a leaf out your book do a few two minute clips show lots of photos and be done. I spend far to long talking when you put the point across so easy in just one video. Great location.
I think we're all guilty of talking too much Paul 😁 The secret, is to just be you!
Try 'Seal Skin' waterproof socks, work for me. :)
Already ordered them, cheers Rob 👍👍
Do you need to be ex S.A.S. to attend one of your trips Gary ?
lol no but it would help :)
I love your videos and personality....but perhaps less B-roll and more education? TY!
Thanks Matt. I shoot educational videos too
