  • In this video, I discuss the golden rule of Landscape Photography whilst creating images at Hartland Quays, Devon.
Hartland Quay in Devon is a spectacular location. It lends itself perfectly to wildlife and landscape photography.
    Part 1, 2 & 3 tinyurl.com/e4...
As a photographer based in Yorkshire, my stomping ground normally ranges from North Wales to Scotland. So to venture as far south as Devon was a real treat. It might have been a first but it's just a stepping stone to many, many trips to come there!
The golden rule of Landscape Photography
Is there a golden rule? The answer is simply yes. In photography, there are many rules. Rules we use as guides. Rules that are important to follow and rules that are great to break. It's a lot of fun breaking rules but they're very often difficult if not impossible to break unless we know and understand why they're there in the first place. Having said that, there is still a golden rule in photography that really is important to follow! I couldn't possibly tell you here, you'll have to watch the video and see for yourself!
It's a tongue-in-cheek rule by the way but I bet you still follow it!
I hope you enjoy the video!

It's called adventure, and in my humble opinion, bee's knees shot or not; always worth the effort and memories.
We live and learn, and adding adventure, at least in my 62 yrs here, increases both living and learning!
    Sorry for the run on.

Went down there last March - always impressed with the rock formations at Hartland Quay and Duckpool. The latter has a great example of nature's bricklaying in the rockface, plus lots of those low lying rocks stretching out onto the beach

Had to smile when you talked about scrambling down the cliff to get an "inaccessible" shot being difficult "for a man of my age". Since following your channel, I've discovered several great waterfalls very near where I live but most demand a precarious scramble down gully sides - not easy for a man of my age - 70 😂. However, I'm enjoying the challenge and you've opened up a new rich vein of landscape locations for me. Many thanks for another entertaining video.

I have been watching your videos from across the pond, and I appreciate your expertise, your enthusiasm, and your sense of humor. When I was a younger man, I did a lot of running. The same golden rule applied,-it was too hot, too cold, too hilly, too rainy, too humid, didn’t wear the right shoes, eat too much for breakfast etc. to beat my personal best, but once I got going none of that mattered. Thanks.

I have been to Hartland Quay 3 times in the last couple of years & it is not an easy place to get a good photograph. I will go back & try again when I return to Exmoor later in the year. Don't underestimate Devon my boy, from a Devon maid. Morewentstow, slightly further down the coast is also equally stunning. We broke down the 1st time with the car bonnet parked facing the sea wall opposite the Hotel. My husband had flattened the battery of the car as he fell asleep with the radio on. Sadly, I didn't get a decent sunset while waiting for the AA. Nice to see you in my part of the world & now you know why I don't go else where. "Devon Glorious Devon". Stay safe & well.

That first shot when you changed it to B+W, sublime, your follow-on shots superb. A couple of more rules for you on coastal shoots. Tide heights are given on an ave air pressure of 1013hp, so for every 1Hp drop in the air pressure, the tide will be 1cm higher. A drop of air pressure to 950 your tide height will be 63 cm higher. The other rule is the rule of 1/12s tide rise of say 12ft first hour, 1ft, 2nd a further 2ft, 3rd a further, 3ft, 4th a further 3ft, 5th a further 2ft and the last hour a further 1ft. It explains why people get stuck on rocks! We need to look at shipping forecasts for coastal weather far more help. The only problem I see with Devon, it's on the wrong side of the River Tamar, lol

Aw shame you didn’t get the composition on the beach. James thoroughly enjoyed his day with you down at Hartland. I enjoyed it too. We plan to go again but at the end of the summer when sunset is slightly earlier as it was a bit of a drive. Next time you come down this way, can I suggest you visit west Cornwall? Look up Port Nanvan. It is not for the faint hearted, you have to do some climbing but it is amazing there and Cape Cornwall and visit The Lizard - Kynance Cove. Many people prefer Cornwall to Devon but I am bias. 😉 The peninsula is a beautiful place.

The photos you got from your `danger position' are actually quite good I think. But so are the other images from your `safer' positions. But there is a tendency for us to do silly things from time to time in order to get a different view just because its different. I'm not sure what it is but it can become like an addiction. Its no longer about the image but what I had to do to get it. Take care Gary, we love your channel and would like you to stay with us a bit longer! Mrs Gough would probably like you to stay safe as well! Keep up the good work mate.

Cheers. I fancy photographing Lundy one day. That was the first time I ever saw it 👍👍

Awesome video, Gary. Good to see that even the best have a "bad" day, and admit defeat. Great shots though.

I had the same problem there last weekend scrabbling around trying to unsuccessfully find a good sunset composition. Best shot of the day was during the golden hour compressing the view along the southwest coast from the Upper carpark. Did you notice you can see the Gower from there!

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  3 роки тому

Hi Paul. The Gower? I'm not sure what that is. So that's a no to your question then 😁😁

@@GaryGough as in Gower near Swansea where we live. We could see it on the horizon so used a compass and Google earth. The Hartland lighthouse would have been another great photo except it was clad in scaffolding for refurbishment last week.

I thought those sunset shots were stunning. Those locations are really tricky - I went to Bedruthen Steps a while ago and had the same challenge. I didn't get anywhere near as good images as you've taken though! Yours is my favourite channel by a mile as I always pick up some kind of tip.

Hi Gary, long time no comment, LOL! I still watch your latest videos, however I've lost audio on the computer & I watch your presentations on the big screen which does not allow any communication other than thumbs up/down & subscribe...U always get a thumbs up btw! I clicked on your " MY GEAR " & it does in fact show that you are still using the LEE filter system, however, is that a NISE system I see or just a NISE cap on the outside. For the record, there is NO bias on my part, the only filters I use are polarizers on occasion. HOWEVER, if or when I step up my game it will be the NISE system or equivalent for the simple reason I want to shoot through 100% glass, NOT resin, i.e. plastic ND filters. I still CANNOT fathom why anyone with 1000's of dollars worth of camera equip. would choose to shoot through a piece of plastic with a $1000.00 plus lens! My RANT is still the same from a couple years back now on this very same subject, i.e. plastic versus glass...Fantastic location Gary & I'm so envious because I live on the opposite side of the pond...

Gary what would you have done differently to better foresee the composition issues without climbing down? Not sure how you would know. Enjoyed the mix of wildlife and landscape. I loved your composition with The angled rock outcrops at sunset.
