Yeah Max was definitely more blunt when he was younger. I can imagine how annoying it must be to answer leading questions like that all the time when your 19 years old.
I also feel some drivers come across more savage when English isn’t their first language and are sometimes criticised for that too harshly. When you don’t speak a second language fluently and have to communicate using a limited vocabulary, you’re gonna be more direct. Adding nuances or substantiating your opinion requires a higher level of proficiency

    Kimi: "No"
    *Awkward silence*
    "Okay, that's pretty clear"
Kimi's simplicity is so authentic and funny. He also doesn't take bullshit. I think he's probably the realest guy the grid has ever seen. As he himself says "Why do you have make it so complicated?"

I mean "a younger max verstappen" was 19, a literal teenager
on top of coming from a culture that often values honesty over politness.
He was rough and petty for a long time and he will always stay a very direct communicater but you can basically see how many of us evolve between legal mature age and actually maturing (minus the fact that we dont stand in the spotlight all the time).

Even if I like to watch this kind of compilations, I always feel Kimi is being misunderstood by many because of language and cultural background. I want to explain my thoughts on one of the Kimi moments:
Kimi telling Rosato to f* off when he comes to tell that the boss of Ferrari came to suprise visit isn't as bad or "savage" as it looks.
    a) Kimi is good friends with Rosato (he's actually Kimis sons godfather)
    b) Kimi respects the interview he is doing. He might not like interviews but he respects the journalist by not cutting it short just because of suprise visit from boss.
    c) He's smiling/laughing the whole time. So you must know it's totally said in a joking way even if he means the message. Kimi don't laugh often in interviews. 😃

I think Lewis sometimes appreciates other drivers being savage because he can’t get away with saying the things they say, so likes it when they say it for him. Imagine the huge blow back Lewis would get if he communicated like Kimi or said he would headbutt a journalist. His feet are held to the fire differently than others. People still get frustrated that he’s so PR driven now, but can’t seem to recognise why he feels the need to be like that.

Great analysis. As always. I especially enjoyed hearing your thoughts on “young Max“. If we consider the amount of media attention that he’s been facing since day one, I’ve always felt like he had a pretty calm head for his age. Most of the time. With the pressure eased off now, he’s become a very mature young man who still kept his brutal honesty. I really like him for that!

When i came across them out in public there was never much talk, just me asking "how you doin buddy?" And the answer being "good", or "where are you going?" "Home/work/school". But when I visited them at home it was like talking to an entirely different person. Smiling, laughing, cracking jokes, long conversations on just about anything you could think of. you should look at Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.
But also with Daniel, he has said to people before that after some of the fatal accidents in the last 10 years that off the race track he knows there is more important things to be worrying about than being shitty at each other; and he tries to ensure he has a good time with everyone he meets because there is more to life than racing and after the racing is done he wants to be remembered (like Seb) for being a good guy, not for being mean/rude/aggressive

You should watch the entire "I think is bullshit" Lewis-Seb video. You gotta watch Lewis when Seb asks him what did he say. Lewis feels fearful of answering because he thinks Seb is gonna give him the hard time calling him out about the topic, but the level of relax he achieves when Seb said "I think is bullshit" explains pretty much LH vulnerability.

Most of these clips are when Max was a teenager. Imagine being 17 years old and plunged in to the F1 circus. He was just being a (Dutch) teenager, stayed himself at all times. He is more mature now and you can see his humor coming through much more. He is more diplomatic, but still being himself and saying things worth stating even though the questions can be repetitive, leading or stupid.
Side note: Kimi is just the best, he is missed, but he certainly won't miss the F1 circus.

Kimi is from North. So am i. We all have "Jantelagen" in our heads since we were small. Its basicly a "law" that tells us to not brag or talk about ourselves to other people. We are also a introverted society here. So thats why he kinda seems different and dont really want to talk. Its kinda common here. He's still fun as hell tho. When we (him) gets pushed into answering those kinds of question we often go into defense mode or sarcastic mode.

    For your reference:
Kimi retired a year ago (he is 43 y/o now),
Seb Vettel retired this year (time w/ family, more philantropic work)
Lewis is a 7-time World Drivers Champion,
    Max a 2x WDC,
    Kimi a WDC,
    Seb 4x WDC

4:05 - Max didn't lose control of his emotions, what you are seeing is typical Dutch directness. We generally don't have time for bullshit, so when people start being bullshittish, we tend to shut it down really quick.

If you want some insight into Daniel's character his nationality i think plays a lot into it. Generally, Australians are laid back and tall poppy syndrome plays a big part in how you talk and act. trash talking is equivalent to asking to be ripped apart. if you look at another Australian athlete, Nick Kyrgios, he is really not well liked. I've yet to meet another Australian that likes him and doesnt think he's a f*ck wit. media here also drags Kyrgios quite a bit, hoping he grows up.

@8:00 lewis laughs because lewis would never dream of talking like that.... hes 99x more open, but what comes out his mouth is not what he feels.
unless its in written statements or board radios.
lewis has a mask on when the camera is on his face, scandinavian and german drivers are just built different.

Coming from a fellow dutchie, when youre younger you dont want a million bullshit questions, thats why max replied the way he did, when you get older you start to realize that it all doesnt really matter in the end and its better to answer very political to avoid any other drama
Also: its very normal for dutchies to be very straight forward, its just how we are

7:15 if he's anything like me i don't think there is much information he doesn't want to disclose, it's just that most of the things, he does them because he wants to and because he likes them. I always hate it when someone asks me why i like that person, movie, sport... Most of the time I never asked myself that question, I just like it and am happy with it and don't really feel the need to think about the why.
