      As far as I know, Vulcan mental abilities are not as potent as Betazoid abilities. Vulcans have limited psionic abilities but theirs seem to be at their strongest when physical contact is possible. Betazoids seem to be unable to turn their psychic and empathic abilities off at all; they're a part of them, like our sense of hearing or sight. You can close your eyes, but you'll always see light bleeding through; you can close your ears, but you will always hear something.

    The Betazoids joined the Federation in TNG Season 2, Episode 19, "Manhunt". In the episode the Enterprise takes Lwaxana Troi to a diplomatic conference on the planet Pacifica where the Betazoid's and the Andarian's are going through the final phases of their reviews for joining the Federation. As mentioned in the video above and comments below, it was occupied by the Dominion during DS9 and was a federation member at the time.
    For some people in the comments, Deana Troi's father is a human and Federation citizen, which meant she was considered a Federation citizen for the purposes of joining Starfleet. (Being the only daughter of the most powerful of the 20 Great Houses and the closest thing Betazed has to a princess certainly helped. )
    This is purely speculation, but her acceptance to Starfleet and assignment to the flagship may have been a political public relations move by the Federation. News about the Enterprise D, Troi and how the Federation embodies the Betazoid's moral and ethical standards would have done a lot to sway public opinion in favor of joining the UFP.

    • @cane6074
      @cane6074 2 місяці тому

      That's an interesting interpretation, but regardless of that, Troi was very much qualified for the position and happened to be very good at it. She's a good psychologist, she's emphatic and caring, but at the same time, honest and firm. Also did not know that there are Ascension was recent to the Federation, kind of surprising considering how close they are to the major worlds of the Federation and how advanced their society really is. The fact that Earth was getting perilously close to striking distance of the Dominion soon after betazrd gives an idea how close it is to the Federations core.

    • @SecretKeeperForever9
      @SecretKeeperForever9 2 роки тому +4

      I see three potentials: Strong Telepathic Abilities, Empathic Abilities or Empathic and Telepathic. It would likely be greatly influenced on which planet they are raised on. If raised on Vulcan and taught to suppress emotion they may develop no empathic ability at all, but could have powerful telepathic abilities beyond what either parent's species is capable of. There is a chance they could develop both abilities but would be 'weaker' compared to a full Betazoid, whom seem to have more capabilities then Vulcans. Though I could see any child raised on Vulcan going very wrong once they hit puberty. If they try to suppress their emotions like culturally taught on Vulcan it could cause serious psychological damage, especially if they were born with the empathic ability versus only telepathic. The best outcome would happen if raised on Betazoid or neither planets.

    • @SecretKeeperForever9
      @SecretKeeperForever9 2 роки тому +2

      @@randybentley2633 The only good thing is that Betazoid abilities do not develop until after puberty. This would require a lot of training before they ever hit puberty to prevent a psychological disaster for the child. They would need to walk the thin line between feeling and not feeling. They would have to be taught how to emotionally detach. Which if brought up with some Vulcan traditional could be possible. They would have to figure out how to turn off their abilities which full Betazoid cannot do. That would have been taught by the Vulcan parent. They would never be able to fully detach from emotions like a Vulcan can. That goes against their core function between emotional species. I would assume that the Betazoid use mediation similar to Vulcans because a planet full of empathy with no off switch sounds awful honestly. It would be a toss up on the outcome until they hit puberty. It's possible they would have to use some form of hormonal regulator during this period to avoid emotional outbursts, ect.

Hopefully, the family goes into this with such an understanding.

      It could also be an outgrowth of a species having non-verbal communication methods. Social Insects communicate through biochemical scents, another species may develop a broadcast radiation. Powerful ability to sense neuro-electrical signals. The more fascinating thing is telepathic species that also have developed and functional verbal communication. It makes sense as explained with Betazoids because their telepathy develops in adolescence, which lends towards it being a mutation later in their development. Star Trek also has a tendency to treat it as an inevitable evolutionary step. All the way back in "Where No Man has Gone Before" humans were taking note of humans with high ESP ratings, apparently expecting humanity to evolve telepathy as time went on.

    I appreciate this episode. Betazoids are one of my fav,yet most wondered about, races. As an Rp gamer, I've found it fun, at times, to remind people that whatever powers they've thought they'd be most fearful of, telepathy should always be near the top. I don't have to hurt you; I can change the way you think, and leave you questioning if even the thoughts in your mind were really your own. In a game of Star Trek RPG a friend of mine wrote, our black ops ship's Commander was a gruff, manipulative Betazoid, and we all knew she could probably sense our feelings and thoughts. The extent and truth of her abilities was a mystery to us, but she gladly leveraged our ignorance against us, leading us to wonder what she could do. It left me wondering, in the past, if the Federation had any actual "rules" for telepathy. Betazoids, Vulcan, Lethians,Lothian, a few others demonstrated a range of abilities, strengths, and willingness to do bad. I guess none of them were Charles Xavier-level threats, but I wondered, and the general answer I got was "none are that powerful + honor system, so they just assume no Vulcan telepathy-terrorists will use ancient weapons, and no Betazoids will spy for money".
    Anyway, it's nice to see this, and get some ideas about how they actually look at their own abilities, and why they probably wouldn't be threats with them.

      It could go either way I think. I think the telepathy could be very strong. Empathy could be influenced by upbringing. If raised on Vulcan they could never develop empathy at all since they would have been raised to suppress emotions. That may not work however. I feel they would be a rather emotional combination. Trying to get someone to be that goes against biology rarely works out. It could be a disaster if not raised properly. Since Vulcan have a history of violent emotions and combine that with empathy...

      Well Iran was called Persia for a long time even though the locals have always called it "Iran" and it was named Persia by the ancient Greeks, so it's not like its something new, sometimes certain names just stick for example there could be a vocalization or telepathic component in the native name for Betazed that's hard or impossible for non-Betazoids to do and thus most people would prefer a name they can say. There's no indication that name Betazed was forced as the official name but rather that it kind of just became that over time, probably because most people were already using it anyway as the native name wasn't known and you had to call it something.

    In Re: rationale for lack of large-scale war on Betazed -- it would likely be both for the cited rationale (overwhelming suffering to a normally empathic species) but also because *as* an empathic/telepathic species their lines of interpersonal as well as inter-regional communication would be clearer and less veiled; that is, most Betazoids (and their leaders) would be more insightful and less prone to certain contexts of socio-political misunderstandings as well as machinations than most other species would be. (Even for other telepathic races, like Vulcans, this wouldn't necessarily be the case as those other races aren't noted to have the integrated communal sense that most Betazoids demonstrate or are at least implied as having.) That's an important context in this particular case.
    EDIT: also, though not explicitly stated, it is strongly implied in the TNG episode "First Contact" (s4e15) that Betazed *is* one of the planets in the Federation, when Picard and Deanna present themselves to a scientist and Deanna explains/cites their origins, noting that they come from a Federation of planets then consequently noting that Picard comes from a planet called Earth and she comes from Betazed. Again, while not explicitly stated, it is a reasonable inference-of-listing-reference on the part of the scientist/viewing audience, and understood as implicit in reference.
