A recent discovery in genetics has revealed that the transcription of genetic information is not just a chemical process but also a mechanical one. As the ribosome decodes the RNA it passes through appatures and they've found that molecular tension actually changes the decoding and encoding process.
It is believed that this is how environmental changes result in altered biology without genetic mutations since while the chemistry of the replication process is the same, the cellular stresses will change depending upon external factors and therefore alter gene expression.
So moving a Mudcrab from one climate to another could potentially trigger genetic alterations without the need for generational mutations.
Like how a human can be raised in the jungle and be way more buff easier than someone raised on hamburgers and car rides.
@@justsomejerseydevilwithint4606 Actually, more like how human migration out of the middle east into colder climates may be responsible for how Europeans and Asians ended up with paler skin than their ancestors. Over time the modified gene expression became a permanent genetic feature.
They wouldn’t be able to immediately climatize, like with animals in captivity, most would certainly die if you don’t replicate their environment to a T. Generational evolution has done a good job for moving penguins up towards the equator, but you can just take an Antarctic penguin and chuck them into a tropical, even subtropical environment and expect them to adapt instantly to become the ones that live in that band..
@@RyanYoxo It seems UA-cam is auto-deleting comments with URLs so I'll just suggest you Google recent studies which have observed morphology of animals already changing in order to lose bodyheat more easily in parts of the world where ambient temperatures are rising. This "shapeshifting" as they called it is not mutation or evolution, but a fundamental change in gene expression as described in the other discovery about genetic encoding.
This shows that genetic alterations do not require hundred or thousands of years to occur and that visible changes in morphology do not require many generations to manifest.
In a very real sense, it's worth noting that human and animal biology is far more capable of optimising our physical parameters in response to the habitat than previously thought.
@@KryyssTV Try breaking up the url, or just posting a name for the paper to look up. Google doesn't give exact results when searching on it between people so it's hard to tell someone to search it when they might not get the same sites based on their own search history. Even a specific search term is better than "Google recent studies which have observed morphology of animals already changing in order to lose bodyheat" unless that's specifically what it's called.

Fun story from when my brothers and I first played Oblivion: we noticed that sometimes, when they decided to attack you, they would raise their pincers into the air as if to give thanks to some unseen crab god. So we started saying “Thank you crab god for the bountiful harvest” in a funny voice whenever we saw one do it. Imagine our shock and surprise when we came across the statue of Hermaeus Mora.
Mudcrabs are crazed zealots of hermaeus Mora, confirmed
That’s a great story. xD

Mudcrabs are the vermin of oblivion. Trying to rest up for a level, mudcrab I can't find after 30 hours of looking around.
In Oblivion there is a quest where you must find a wizard who has accidentally made everything in and around a village invisible so he can have some piece and quiet. On my first play through I got stuck between some rocks and couldn't fast travel because of an enemy that I couldn't see. I did try to shoot arrows around until I ran out. I remember returning to Lakeview manor after a long day of adventuring & deciding to upgrade my house a little. I went to find my steward Sven but after about 5-10 mins of searching I still couldn't find him. I walked out towards the road to see if he was fighting a bandit or wolf or something & stopped at the small pond near the road. The scene I discovered there will be etched into my mind until my inevitable ascension to Sovngarde.
There lying dead in a fresh pool of his own blood & viscera was Sven, beside him a most retched creature... a Mudcrab! It seems he had wandered out to the pond maybe to gather water or go fishing however this is where his life was cut short. I'm pretty sure the Flat Backed/Rocky Topped crabs in Skyrim is just sexual dimorphism. The big ones are the males, its why they have larger claws and thicker armor. Its pretty common in crabs. Fiddler Crabs are the best example of this, as females do not grow the oversized claw that a male do.
Thats absolutely brilliant. I always thought the smaller ones were juvenile crabs

Oh boy I gotta hear this one.
Now this is the hard hitting tes content I'm here for.
I gotta love this crazy side of the elder scrolls lore. Like, my friend once asked me to borrow Skyrim, because another friend recommended it to her and a couple days later I told my friend all about how Molag Bal used to rule Nirn as a crab king and then the gods kind of accidentally made the god of destruction to fight the crab king. Now here we are, talking about mountain sized crabs deciding to just stop being mountain sized crabs and making it so. I swear, I'd never find out about this stuff, I don't care enough about the in-game books and dialogue to make these connections and that just makes me love this channel, that I don't have to read to get my wack ass lore.
Even if you collect and read all the lorebooks, its incredibly hard to remember enough tiny details to create theories like this.
That near-graphic attack made me thing of one thing; (Solid Snake voice) "CRAB BATTLE!!"

this is really great, but I would argue that emperor crabs are in fact a different species of crabs, and evolved into mudcrabs. Not that real life has any bearing on skyrim, but crabs have independently evolved 5 separate distinct times (and more dependently) that its a whole field of study called Carcinisation. Everything becomes crab, they are the ultimate life form.
Mr.Krabs is the ultimate life form 😮

I never thought a mudcrab video could be so good. Well done
Whatever you guys are smoking, I want some of that! Thanks for making my day, gents. Carry on Talos' work!
The limit on lobsters isn't age, and only size as a secondary factor. As noted, it has to shed the old shell and grow a new one-- and as these get larger over the years, there eventually isn't enough metabolic resources left to grow a new shell, which results in a slow death sentence.
My gods that's one hell of an intro. Must've been on Legendary Survival.

deep lore about crabs that live in the mud
I really want to learn the backstory of that huge mubcrab corpse
In the quest "Kyne's Sacred Trials", you are tasked with defeating seven "spirit beasts", and one of them is a giant ghostly mudcrab (called the Guardian Mudcrab) that appears at the location of the fossilized giant mudcrab. Each spirit beast is a beast "sacred to Kyne", meaning that they are tasked by Kyne directly for these trials. The Guardian Mudcrab is heavily implied to be the fossilized giant mudcrab, which further implies that the fossilized giant mudcrab was tasked after it's death to be one of Kyne's seven spirit beast guardians of Kyne's Token.
And that's the backstory of the huge mudcrab corpse.
@@christianrose9166 While what you say is true, it still doesn't explain why that boy was so big. For all we know Kyne just looked him and said "you're a big fuckin' mudcrab, wanna be a Guardian Spirit?" (Crab noises) "So be it".
@@christianrose9166 I’ve played for 6 years and never heard of this quest, I must find it
@@gaminreasons8941 I mean, yeah, but the video kind of explains why it got so big. It lived a really long time, and continued to grow. Then it died, and eventually was fossilized. As for how it died, well there are a lot of giants and mammoths around those parts, so it's safe to say one of them killed it.

“I am in blood, stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er”
- Me, describing my addiction to TES lore
actually lobsters do have a cap of sorts. Its just different for the individual lobster, as they will get to a point where molting over exhausts their body and they die. Once the lobster gets to this point they will either choose not to molt which will lead to their shell eventually dissolving and they perish, or they will tempt that molt and die during the process. We do not know how long it takes them to reach that stage and how different it is for each individual, or how long they can live, but since they don't have the gene that makes you effectively immortal (like the immortal jellyfish and a couple other creatures) we know they do have a max lifespan. Some guy in china I think got a new born lobster and is taking care of it so that once it dies, most likely in his children's or grandchildren's lifetimes we will have an idea of how long they live in optimal conditions.
This is a test. Those lobsters who choose not to molt fail instantly. The brave ones, on the other hand, if they have a big enough chakra pool or something, survive the Final Molt and unlock some legendary shit I guess.
Finally, the lore Ive been wanting... Im completely serious
you can also find the mudcrab merchant in skyrim as a corpse. it has some lore with it. I was waiting the whole episode to hear what you had to say about it, but no luck.
"What has risen may sink, and what has sunk may rise. Loathsomeness waits and dreams in the deep, and decay spreads over the tottering cities of men." And mer, obviously.
Krab
This is the most cosmically significant video on this channel
So a point to add to the idea of phenotypic plasticity in mudcrabs. Variations within the individual are more likely dependent upon the individual and major change would happen within the course of several generations. This is why Salty, our friend from Morrowind, never grew far beyond the size of a typical mudcrab when we see him again in 4th era Skyrim. Who knows. Perhaps the Emperor Crabs of old who scuttled from Kalpa to Kalpa grew slowly through the untold years which is a greater testament to their age rather than their size.

The fact that I actually learned a crucial piece of lore in this video is incredible (I didn’t know what/where resdain was)
Can we get an updated video about the visual mods you guys use for skyrim?
"I fought mudcrabs more fearsome than you!" Tamerial has a bad mudcrab problem I guess.
I never once thought that crabs, even of the mud sort, needed explanation and lore.
Boy was I a fool.
About time there's a review of the most destructive creatures in TES
Its a common misconception that percieved adaptations are some how deliberate. Its the result of random mutations. Those random mutations can be beneficial and help the creature survive. Survival of the fittest. How would a cell know to grow fur if its in a cold environment. It doesnt work that way. Its the animal with fur that survives.
Man am I really excited to watch a 15 minute video on crabs? I guess I am.
I would love to see Mudcrab merchant return in Elder Scrolls 6.

Mudcrabs are the focus of one of the most amusing Skyrim mods: the Swearing Mudcrabs Mad which makes me laugh every time I watch a video showcasing it.
Edit: that mod is the first thing that I think of when I hear the word Mudcrab.

“I mean yeah, of course this is how we’re spending our next 15 minutes.”
I've never met the talking mudcrab, despite putting in more hours in Morrowind than all the other games combined.
I remember my first time playing Skyrim, seeing a mudcrab and feeling so much disgust and internal strife by its mere existence. I wanted to drive them into extinction and i was enraged to find the giant crab but it was quelled when i realized it was dead.
Now I need a mod that makes Mudcrabs op, their lore strength is something I must witness first hand!!! or foot?
I use clusters of mudcrabs (Oblivion game) for block and armor training. Much clattering and clanging to be had.
My hypothesis is that Mr Drunken Mudcrab is the pinnacle of the (emperor) crabs going hard with "Mundane Satisfactions" as the prophet says.
