Hey Doug: I would love to see you review Jonah A VeggieTales Movie and The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything movie. Come to think of it, reviewing these 2 theatrical VeggieTales films, the 2 Christmas films, and the Easter film would make a great theme month at some point.
I watched this old Hanna-Barbera cartoon that was recommended to me, I thought maybe you could talk about it. It's called Drak Pack, it would be nice for Nostalgiaween or "Was That Real?"
Review Batman and Harley Quinn, Batman Ninja, The LEGO Batman Movie, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Injustice (2021).
The film marks the first time since 1966's Batman: The Movie that *the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and Catwoman have all appeared in a live-action movie together.*
One of the things that made me laugh the most is that Gordon is constantly trying to establish some sort of human connection to Batman, he tries to make small talk or crack jokes or anything he possibly can to just have a normal interaction with the guy and Batman just stonewalls him the whole time, it’s great.
@@Amp5150 Even Alfred in the comics owns a gun and doesn't follow Batman's no killing rule. Villain: "But Batman doesn't kill" Alfred: "I can assure you, I am not Batman." Savage af 🤣
I really like the twist that he inspired his villains. He realizes that his whole vengeance message is inspiring the wrong people and at the end he turns to inspire hope. A good character arc that make me excited to see the future of this character and Pattinson’s acting when he thought the riddler found out his identity was so good. He looked so scared that his identity was found out, and then you see his facial expression change so fast when he realizes riddler doesn’t know.
I still think it's very possible Riddler does know, but was being careful with his words to keep the enjoyment of his knowledge. His attempted killing of Bruce seems so different from the others and if he figured out the secrets of Falcone, then he could have done the same with Bruce.
Not a twist really. It’s been floated in the comic and animation lore that the only reason this rogue’s gallery of supervillains exist is because of Batman’s presence.
@@archercole5271 Could be as he does figure out Batman is Bruce Wayne in the Hush storyline. And Riddler threatens Bruce by saying he will tell everyone. But Batman calls his bluff and tells him no way would you ever tell anyone because a Riddle that everyone knows the Answer to is worthless.
I love how she got to play 2 different versions of Catwoman in terms of tone. One who's a campy cat burglar who says "Meow-Meow" a lot, and the other is a more complex character with her own moral compass.
@@BlazerK1914 They're saying that the comedy that WAS included was great. And it was. The movie knew how to be serious with some funny moments to help you laugh after pretty tense scenes.
When Batman led the people out the stadium literally carrying a torch, I remembered his quote, "I am the shadow", and I thought "And now he's become the light". Might be just my interpretation, but I felt that that symbolism was on purpose and I liked it, because it was shown, not told.
@@mscooldeadly You mean in contrast to all the realistic batman-movies, where a traumatized billionaire fights tons of criminals and terrorists dressed like a bat and never gets overwhelmed by guns and numbers and nobody recognizes him despite half of his face being on display at all times?
@@Siegfried5846 it not being realistic is a big plus in my book. A realistic Batman movie would end after 1 minute with Batman dead on the street with a bullet hole in his head. Not very exciting, is it?
What I loved about Pattinson's performance is how haunted and somber he looked as Batman. It's exactly how I would imagine someone like Batman to look.
He's basically a man-child, which is part of what makes him so scary. I know people like that, and sometimes they seem silly and harmless, but other times I'm left wondering if they aren't two steps away from doing something terrible.
I love how Pattinson whispers all his lines and only shouts like 2 of them. The portrayal of Bruce Wayne really worked with this film due to its dark setting and creepy imagery. Can’t wait for the sequel to come out!
Word of God: According to Matt Reeves, the appearance of *Barry Keoghan as the Joker* was not meant to set up the villain of a future movie, but instead to convey that after being active for two years, Batman already has a history and a growing Rogues Gallery. In a Deleted Scene early in the film, *Batman sneaks into Arkham to get Joker's take on the Riddler murders.*
Now I'm just imagining a sequel movie that has the Joker in it but he isn't the main villain, but is just a prankster. Still crazy and creepy, but not a full-on criminal and I honestly kind of like that idea.
To me, Batman’s lack of emotion in the “leaning over to look at Penguin” scene is way, _way_ , *_way_* , scarier than if he was pissed. And I think so for the same reason I think those big, thunking footsteps when he’s _walking_ , not _running_ ,are scarier than if he just jumped on you from behind- this version of Batman isn’t afraid of you getting away. You can run, if you’ve got the energy. But he’ll get you. And it will hurt until he does.
@retsaM innavoiG I don’t know I’m with the critic. I don’t need him mad or anything, but I kinda just wish they kept the feet close to the car and then Penguin’s reaction.
Speaking of humor, I absolutely loved the moment where Falcone is telling Bruce that Thomas Wayne saving him had to mean something. Bruce’s deadpan response was classic: “That means he took the Hippocratic Oath.” 😂
You've gotta admit, this was a pretty savage answer to a trick question that would otherwise force Bruce to either bond with a mob boss or disrespect said mob boss at his face.
What I love about this Batman is while he doesn't *DIRECTLY* kill people, he doesn't exactly go out of his way to care. Like when Gordon was discussing the dropheads, or when other characters express sympathy towards criminals, Batman's always like "Who cares". 🦇
@@ravensthatflywiththenightm7319 Batman cares for all life that’s why joker isn’t dead, maybe that’s what you like about early Batman but that isn’t how Batman operates at all
I also like how he conveyed certain emotions, like surprise. All the other actors who played Batman all kept stoic faces and barely flinched when something unexpected happened. Pattinson, however, would show actual, surprise, shock, dismay when the situation called for it.
I do like the fact that a lot of this movie reminds me of the 2004 animated version of Batman. That kickass theme song would've totally fit in this movie.
Yeah, this Batman reminded of that show in many ways. The emphasis on a younger Batman, "The Batman" title and the voice delivery to an extent. Hell, if they introduce sidekicks in this series, I could see his interaction with them being similar to that show.
Speaking of the specific humor in this movie, I love the brief running gag of Catwoman having the shit scared out of her, whenever Batman sneaks up on her.
I love how this film subtly calls out Riddler for what he really is near the end. His campaign of terror has always been about "no more lies", when he himself is living a lie. When Batman tells him his delusion of them being a team is rightfully insane, he breaks down into a tantrum, rejecting the reality around him for the one that serves his ego the most. Underneath the guise of the chess master who can plan it all out, he's a dangerous child who never grew up.
This movie is my favorite live-action Batman film. It's like the filmmakers said "So you want Batman? Okay, you get Batman. 3 hours of him!" Needless to say, I saw it in the theater 4 times, I love it so much.
I only saw it twice but I had to grab a rideshare there and back the second time. And this was just after Russia barged into Ukraine so gas prices were just jacking up. The round-trip ride alone cost me $120, and then there was the actual ticket. Fully worth it. Theater room was empty both times.
Paul Dano crushed it as The Riddler. My favourite parts of the movie was when he was on screen. I loved how he doesn’t find out who Batman is and that Batman isn’t on his side which gives him that motivation to be one of Batman’s nemesis in this world
I like how they give him a more personal motive than just "Batman's the biggest mystery". He spent the entire film idolising Batman, only to feel betrayed by him at the end. So, now he sets out to prove he can outsmart the one person he looked up to.
So glad that Robert Pattinson is finally getting the recognition he deserves! The guy's been putting out banger performances for a while now. Good Time, The Lighthouse, High Life, The Lost City of Z, The Rover, and he was the best part of Tenet he really should have been in that movie more.
And now he’s going to be the lead in Bong Joon Ho’s next film after Parasite before he starts the Batman sequel!!! Looks like he’s coming for that Oscar nomination! God knows it’s overdue. A lot of people were mad when he was snubbed for The Lighthouse (along with a Willem DaFoe snub) and Good Time. Pattinson is not playing around!
@@0816M3RC and ? majority of morons eat at mc donald, it's still bad food for morons. it's not a good movie. As much as I loved the movie, I do wish theaters in the US used more intermissions. I think a great one for this film would have been right after Batman finally caught up to Penguin in that car chase scene and then resume the film with Penguin's interrogation.
@@archercole5271 Intermissions used to be so commonplace that Monty Python even made it a gag in one of their movies. An intermission is built into the film so everyone started getting up and going for snacks or whatever...Then two seconds later, the movie was back.
Honestly i thought the first 30 minutes of The Batman were perfect, that opening where he doesn't even have to be there to get the criminals terrified of him was amazing
It’s such a great setup & his eventual appearance from the shadows to get the thugs reminded me of how Burton’s film built up Michael Keaton appearing in the suit in ‘89
I legit had to stop the movie 30 minutes in to check if it was really PG-13. Looking back there really wasn't anything graphic but the way it sucked you in to such a terrifying surrounding is amazing.
The best opening to a superhero film I've ever seen. While I loved all of the action scenes, I was hoping for more instances where criminals were jumping at shadows. In hindsight, it's kinda jarring how literally every criminal after that opening sequence laughs at Batman until he beats their ass.
That was of the memorable lines of the movie to me, Pattinson's Batman has this subtle badassery that just wasn't present in the other live-action versions to me.
yes, yes, yes! a million times,"yes"! no youtuber/critic ever mentions that... also it's:"mine or yours?" the opposite would mean batman would be the loser...
I've plenty of issues with the film that drag it down for me but his performance was overall not terrible apart from when he lacked the intensity and projected strength of will for being Batman. I quite liked him spending most of the film in-costume, including the mask.
I loved when Doug said "the dude is 36 so he's not *_that_* young." By that logic, 40-year-old me is only a few years older than "not that young" instead of "a decrepit mummy man!"
@@0Fyrebrand0 I am 33 and still feel like im in my 20's so each to his own. Age and how you care for yourself is important, cough Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise. 'Cough" Bruce Willis, Wesley snipes.
See, I understand why Doug didn't like the climax, but I really liked it myself. The fact that the villain wasn't there in person I actually thought was a great touch. Often in real life, the worst villains are not the ones who do everything themselves, but rather the ones who inspired others to do evil (think Charles Manson). The reveal that the Riddler had all these followers ready to carry out his will, and they considered Batman as much of an inspiration as the Riddler was powerful. The climax was an emotional one where he's forced to confront his own dark side in a way we haven't really seen from Batman before. He learns what he's done wrong, and realizes what he can still do right. Even the choice of using water in the climax I thought was good because of the "wash away the filth" aspect, and bats don't generally do well in water.
This movie was literally what happens when you stick Batman in SE7EN…and I LOVE IT. Future Batman movies should put as much focus on his detective skills as it does the action scenes.
'Batman in SE7EN'? really? Se7en has more balls than this, in which Se7en is Rated-R. if matt reeves' batman film were rated-R, sure. but we've already seen batman live-action movies that are rated PG-13 by this point. so it's nothing new nor great.
Fun Fact: The Batcave has a railway system that the Waynes once ysed to help refugees out of the city safely when crime was getting too serious at the time, so the fact that it looks like an underground train track makes sense Also, Wayne's weren't just good people, they really were vigilantes way before Thomas and Bruce were born
The railway station in the Batman is clearly an old station under Wayne Tower. Many big businesses have stations underneath their offices. Hell the Waldorf hotel in New York has a secret entrance to Grand Central so that president Roosevelt could go in and out without anyone seeing him in his wheelchair
I appreciated the fact that this was a new Batman, not Batman in his prime. So yeah, the Batmobile isn't spectacular, he wears like a jumpsuit and crashes horrifically cause he's not used to it, and the cops really, really don't trust him. You see how vulnerable he is, but he is trying to establish himself. Also, I freaking loved that you could hear his footsteps. It just added to his fear factor. None of the other Batmans were ever really scary or that threatening, but this guy? Yeah, I'd be shaking in my boots. But again, he is young and inexperienced, he will figure it out in the sequels, so I can really appreciate all the things he's doing that typically most Batmans do not do. Makes for a great character arc. I will say, I may like this more than the Dark Knight...almost...cause that's how freaking phenomenal this movie is
That part when Batman is flying then crashing was like combo reference to Rocky the Flying Squirrel (Like NC said) and the time Batman in Batman Begins just barely made off the roof before he fell
I wasnt a fan of him fucking up the jumpsuit scene. For starter's that would have killed him if not it being a movie. Second hes the fucking batman, that shouldnt be an issue for him. such a task would have been covered in his ninja training. Im all for a young batman making mistakes but dude is supposed to be an absolute master of the martial arts and ninja shit. It was such a cool scene only they fucked it up at the last moment to foux realism. He was going so fast the blow he took should have crumpled his spine like a stack of pringles.
I half expected for the Critic to react to the “You got a lot of cats.” Line the same way he reacted to the “That’s a lot of fish.” Line from Godzilla.
I'm glad they made Riddler an interesting villain. He's a mix of all the best versions of the villain. He's clever and funny, but can be dark and scary.
Agreed, he was a great villain imo and I thought Paul Dano was so unnerving in the role. I'm glad they made a great adaptation of another reoccurring villain this time, since the good writing is mostly reserved for Joker and not Batman's other rouges.
I like they went more for a mystery to the Riddler instead of the traditional version we’ve seen from the comics to the animated works and “Batman Forever”. I like he’s a scarier character who isn’t afraid to bash your head in though had they gone the usual route it would’ve been fine
The first NC review I ever watched was the one on "Sailor Moon", and the "cousin" joke with Sailors Uranus and Neptune felt like coming full circle. You guys are awesome!
Speaking of, I wish the American studio that dubbed it had the fucking balls to keep them they way they were. It would've worked out just fine, and holy fuck was it obvious when you watched it. The looks they gave each other, the way they talked to each other sometimes, they way they were just a _little_ too concerned when one of them was in danger. But no, the studio had to make them "cousins", which just made it weird when you saw the way they acted towards each other.
1: I think the idea behind the masks is that these people are all in the early stages of their "careers" and the costumes are more homemade, which I like. 2: I was a little underwhelmed by the new Batmobile. I like the chase scene, but it's basically just a really fast car. I know they were going for a more "realistic" version but in my opinion, the Batmobile should always be a little ridiculous looking. Even the Nolan films understood that. 3: I LOVE that they made Martha Wayne an Arkham and that she has more of a backstory as she always seems to get sidelined when it comes to the flashbacks. And I think understanding both of Bruce's parents is key to understanding Batman.
I think they were in a bind because the Nolan/Snyder versions already did the “realistic but bombastic” Batmobile. It had to be difficult to remain distinct while also keeping the gritty aesthetic
I am sick of explaining this to people: the batmobile IS just a really fast car. Don't pay attention to Arkham Knight or the Nolanverse Batmobiles and look at the classic shows and comics when you consider what the REAL Batmobile is.
@@Cashman9111 yeah dude that's why everyone loves Submariner! People just won't shut up about him! Submariner this, Submariner that! Why won't anyone shut up about Submariner?!?!?
That moment of Riddler and Batman in Arkham was just so great. That smile actually felt genuine. Not mocking or cruel or arrogant. That genuinely “I am happy to see you” smile is chilling. I do wish they would of kept more of Hannibal Joker. Batman having brought down Joker in a unseen “Year One” would explain why Gordon so blindly trusts him. And a Joker kept behind glass but Batman occasionally has to turn to beats giving Joker the full stage.
I like the idea that he wasn't a fully realised joker, and that batman contributed to his scarring. When he gets out he'll try to do something bigger next time.
@@Hession0Drasha My only issue with him one day becoming Joker and not already being Joker is the screen time it will take from other villains to eventually turn him. And truthfully all fans really want is a live action Killing Joke origin and that isn’t the easiest to pull off without making Joker the leading villain. If it was up to me, since we never get a clear backstory- he should already be The Joker by the time we see him. He should be such a threat that Batman bringing him down earned blind loyalty from Gordon. But we should never get to see the full story, but only have it referenced in case files and conversations. Joker could say something about how he use to be a handsome fellow before “our little tussle at ACE left me with these beauty marks” but leave it at that. They planted the seed that mental health is so poor in Gotham that even the Wayne’s were not spared. So in this case I think simply having Joker be born from the sickest and ugliest parts of Gotham is a good enough origin. DC just needs to take the time and not rush bringing him into the big picture too soon. If they save it for like The Batman 4 as a payoff for all his smaller appearances it could be epic
There was nothing 'chilling' about that guy .... I was laughing my ass off at the reveal. That whole ending was such playbook garbage and felt completely tacked on. "Carpet Scraper" 😂 "Detective Noir" 😂 give me a break with this crap movie. This 'diseased' joker is so contrived, just like the rest of this 'oh so different' iteration. That wing suit scene was ridiculous looking too. That was about the midpoint of the movie, and I absolutely knew I was not into this thing.
Matt Reeves stated Barry Keong's Joker was in here to establish he exists in this universe and he won't be the villain of the next film. He also states he's got a skin disorder and decided to just be the monster society saw him as...I think. Before I heard that reason for why he looks the way he does, I was like "He LOOKS like he was dumped in a vat of chemicals, that's what you'd actually look like". Gotham did something similar to that.
I personally loved this movie, the music, the riddler ,acting, the riddler, penguins prosthetics, the riddlers use as one of the best horror villains I’ve seen in a long time . Keep up the great content and keep up the awesomeness.
Personally I felt the Riddler was one of the weakest elements. There's nothing more boring than making someone as fun and interesting as the Riddler into just a generic saw style serial killer.
@@GeneralKenobi75 I enjoyed this take on the character myself, but I understand the frustration. I like the approach that the Nolan movies kicked off, with the darker tone and some of the wackier-looking characters having their style and costumes toned down to make the story feel more grounded in reality. It's a tough balancing act to get right, though, and at times it can feel a little *too* subdued -- Riddler's physical appearance being one such case, he's utterly unrecognizable. I would have appreciated some overt nod to the classic Riddler style, like maybe he uses a cheeky cartoon "intellectual gentleman" in a green bowler hat as an internet user icon. Or when he turns himself in and leads Batman & the cops to find him at the diner, he's outfitted in the full goofy green attire to signal "Here I am, you idiots! Pay attention to me!!"
@@0Fyrebrand0 Its not just the appearance, its the character. The Riddler in the comics is not a killer. He's more interested in proving he's smart than murdering anyone, even Batman. Riddler is more like an evil version of Sherlock Holmes from BBC's Sherlock. A smug know-it-all who's aware of how brilliant he is, and wants everyone to know it. He's not a mass murderer like the Joker, he's purely in it as a game. Making him just a serial killer is boring. There's no style or charisma. I get trying to be more "realistic" but you still have Batman dress up as a bat and fight crime or the Joker wear clown make up. A guy dressing up in a green suit and bowler hat isn't that unbelievable.
I would love to see a horror version of Mad Hatter played by James McAvoy in the sequel. Batman doesn’t know who he’s controlling and has to look for subtle clues in peoples behavior. Anyone can be a sleeper agent Alfred or even Harvey Dent. He can even be subtly controlling Bruce Wayne for funding and Batman doesn't even know he's sending money. They can make him sympathetic too, he wants to control peoples mind because he wants to stop people from committing crimes and make evil people kill each other but he’s also willing to kill innocent people that get in his way. His tech could only work on a limited amount of people he needs some alive to control the mob. Also with mind control being introduced it can set up Poison ivy and her mind controlling plants
Bruhhh I’ve been wanting Scarecrow for a sequel to get the drops even more involved (putting fear toxin in the drugs) but Mad Hatter would be an amazing fit as well
@@AK-Drakoin if Scarecrow is known for making Batman see horrible things Mad Hatter can be known for making Batman do horrible things. @@grkpektis I think that’s a cool concept what makes Scarecrow an appealing villain and also why riddler really worked for the first movie (also what makes Batman’s rogues gallery so amazing in general) is that they can hold a mirror up to Batman and work has his antithesis I’m in awe with how many spins you can take with these characters and still have them work within their gimmicks while being as memorable as the hero they go toe to toe with
You don't need to make a villain sympathetic. Mad Hatter mind controls women to rape them, he is not sympathetic. However, I absolutely love the idea of using him.
Like everyone has said, I absolutely loved Riddler in this movie. Making him essentially Jigsaw was such a cool idea. And they better win an Oscar for the Penguin makeup. I can't believe how good Farrell was as well.
Hey doug. When this movie came out, it was on my birthday. So when it came out, my parents took me to it as a way to celebrate my 18th birthday. And let me tell you, that was one of the best birthday presents I could ever ask for because I loved the hell out of The Batman.
I love this movie for finally bringing us "World's Greatest Detective" Batman instead of just "beating up Joker" Batman. If I had one criticism to make, it's that this really didn't need to be three hours long. You could've shaved off at least 15 - 20 minutes and lost nothing.
More like Batman: Homecoming since the hero is still developing his skills. Bruce Wayne is not a playboy yet, Batman walks around noisily in or out of the shadows instead of being stealthy, he knocks on doors instead of sneaking into places, both Penguin and Riddler point out that he is not that smart as a detective, he does not know much about basic Spanish, Alfred cracked the code for him, he was unaware of the club within the club despite already entering the place, did not know his own parents' history, did not know what a carpet tucker is, did not check out the source of the Russian girl's photo which was an apartment outside of the Iceberg Lounge, stayed near a bomb while it counted down to zero, did not save any serial killing victims until Riddler turned himself in and hinted about the final plan, etc...

Fun fact, this is the first time a live action Batman kept their eye shadow on when taking off the mask. All the other Batman's just had magic disappearing eye shadow...
This is still my favorite live action Batman film (Mask of the Phantasm is my favorite overall). Absolutely love the visuals, performances, action, atmosphere, direction...really everything
While I liked the movie I still view the Nolan movie with the Joker to be the best one so far. The riddler just wasn’t likable in this one for me to view it as my favorite
Even though people we're worried about Robert Pattinson becoming the Batman i got to say man did he prove everybody that was doubting him wrong cause man he's acting and the way he moves and acts as Batman feels like a Batman and seeing some of the other actors we've had he honestly reminds me of Keaton a lot in just him being a unknow fresh star that people haven't seen a lot yet and hopefully this does make Pattinson into this next big movie star that i hope everybody was wishing for and i'm just so glad they picked a guy that feels like Bruce but also Batman and speaks well in both voices
I loved the differences in the way he walked and carried himself as Batman vs. Bruce Wayne. You could really feel the difference in confidence and emotion.
I like how when Riddler starts repeating the name Bruce Wayne batman slowly looks at the security camera, like he knows he cant react to that for fear the cops mite suspect his true identity so he makes sure to show no emotion.
24:35 Agreed. Batman has tons of villains that would be interesting in a live action movie. Hugo Strange, Hush, Black Mask, Court of Owls, Lady Shiva, Deathstroke, Nocturna. Hell, I wouldn't mind having Mad Hatter in a Batman movie. He could be creepy as hell if done right.
I really love how this film focuses on the detective aspects of Batman. Despite consistently being referred as a detective, we rarely see Batman’s skills as one nowadays. (If I’m wrong, please let me know.) Which is ironic considering DC stands for Detective Comics.
Question for everyone: do you feel like that removal of the joker extra scene was beneficial or detrimental to the movie? I feel like it’s removal allowed for the movie to keep riddler in the main focus and not have people constantly asking when the joker would break out and show up in the last act
beneficial. But they should've also removed the other one or at the very least, like what Critic said, placed it post-credits but I guess they just didn't want to copy Marvel since it was them who popularized that.
I reeeeeallly did not like it, personally. Although I also did not like Paul Dano in this movie. The laughing as the camera pulled out was soooooo cliche, it was practically parodi. All I could think about was Dr. Evil going "MUAHAHAHAHAH MUAHAHAHAHA MUAHAHAHAH muaha..ha...ha...ha..." I also didn't like the Jokers laugh, at all.
It's like why don't they just show all of them villains looking through the window of their cells. Harley Quinn was the first one that came in my mind when they panned out to the other doors
My favorite part about this movie is the fact that Batman actually took hits! Most of the time Batman is just this unstoppable ninja person, but in this film he actually took hits, and I love it
God I love this movie. It's everything I loved about the Animated Series rolled into a 3-hour flick. It has supervillains, it has action, it has film Noir, it has crime, it has mystery, it has detective stories. it's everything that should be expected of Batman, not just punching bad guys and putting super villains in jail or just the Joker. it's great and it's easily my favorite Batman movie so far
@@mscooldeadly oh wow. I really don't care. I've honestly had my fill of supervillains. It doesn't even hold a candle to it
@@RYMAN1321 agreed. He was teased at the end of the film, and I hope they just keep relegating him to small scenes like that to build him up for a while instead of just blowing their load and unleashing the Joker immediately. You know I actually saw Doug’s initial review of “The Batman” before I saw it and I gotta thank him immensely for underselling the incredible finale to this movie
Biggest disagreement with this review: the humor came from Batman more than the Riddler. "I got you on assaulting a cop." "You got me on three." I laughed out loud in the theater because he seriously just didn't give a shit.
The Batman truly had top-tier comedy. I mean, did you not laugh when Batman ate shit after soaring through the sky like an actual bat, then sadly limped off-screen?

12:46 this scene is what sold me on this movie, the idea of criminals scared of the shadows, because HE(the Batman) could be There, and the bat signal alone striking fear in criminals hearts incredible.
fun fact the gliding scene was made with a green screen but the part where he rolls down the street was actually practical affects plus i do like how Batman and Gordon do work off eachother as if they both need eachother in these cases
One little thing I noticed that made me chuckle a bit, especially when I rewatched it, is the officer who you first see at the crime scene try and stop Batman from entering, but then later that the funeral he goes full fanboy when he sees Bruce Wayne. All in all, its a solid movie and I can't wait to see how Reeves and Pattinson tackle a follow-up.
It's also nice how this one cop becomes more friendly towards him. At first he treats him as a freak. Then accepts him and later tries to make small talk which gives Batman a clue. Nice character development tied to the story.
When that opening monologue rolled out with the moody, introspective narration that felt ripped right out of Year One, gothic rainy Gotham, Giacchino's rising dread-inducing score and that one scene of the mugger looking at the bat-signal and then the alleyway and hesitated, I instantly knew THIS was the Batman I've wanted to see for years!
I like how Batman loses in this one. Batman is usually seen as unstoppable. Unbreakable. Undefeated. So for him to catch the Riddler but miss the true plot was a good idea. It shows his inexperience and highlights his faults and how much he still has to learn. Also by losing the battle, but still continuing to help, that highlights his unbreakable spirit more than if he had defeated the Riddler. I just like the chances taken in this story. There were a lot taken and most of them played off big time. And the use of lighting/ shadows in the film was masterful. I'm one of the few people who don't like the Dark Knight Trilogy, but I LOVE this Batman.
Yeah the Riddler is basically the Zodiac Killer mixed with the villain from Seven as well as the Unabomber. But I do like the fact that they didn't protray the Wayans as this perfect never can-do-no-wrong couple.
I was surprised they took that angle with the Wayne parents, but it was a cool twist. It makes sense that they would have ugly secrets in this world though you still feel for Bruce when we learn the truth
They did something really similar to this in the Batman Telltale games. When I watched this movie and it got to the twist with Thomas and Martha Wayne, the first thing I thought of was the Telltale game.
I think my vote for "best bit of cinematography" does actually go to that penguin car chase. But not quite for the reason you talked about. The batmobile is, throughout almost the entire scene, cloaked in shadow from all angles but the back. You only see the headlights, silhouette, and engine. Which considering he essentially built the thing to roar like a dragon, really hit home what it meant for him to make criminals fear the bat. I mean every other movie can't get enough of showing off their batmobiles. This one wanted to show off what the batmobile actually means, and it payed off in spades.
If this movie was 45 minutes shorter, it would have been near perfect. Everything after the Riddler is captured has that "Dear God this movie is still going" quality to it and it just gets worse as it goes on. Before that my biggest complaint is the car chase ultimately being pointless. Like you say, people died and for no good reason, he could have just hit up the Penguin later.
It did feel a bit like that they finished the writing and then realised they still had their big action scene budget and had to use it up somehow. The movie easily could have and should have ended with Riddler in Arkham.
Honestly it changes daily between TDK and The Batman for my favorite live-action Batman film. This film really nailed the detective aspects of the character and I loved his character arc. Also, the Riddler strikes a perfect balance of creepy and hilarious. Can't wait to see where they go with this version of Gotham. Would love to see Hush, Court of Owls, or Mr. Freeze in the next film.
I have been waiting for you to do this review ever since I saw the movie in theaters with my dad thank you for doing this review of the Batman nostalgia Critic as it is a wonderful early birthday present and it made my Wednesday feel a whole lot better ❤️❤️❤️❤️
With this movie, I think it’s safe to say Michael Giacchino’s Batman theme is the best one. Takes inspiration from Elfman’s gothic motif and Hans Zimmer’s action-focused motif, and does something new with the “inspiring/emotional” motif. If the latter makes sense, that is.
I feel like this movie’s Riddler is very underrated. From his plans to his aesthetic to his motivations and personality, he was a really good villain and a very interesting take on the classic character
Agreed, I feel like many people came out of this movie just thinking "This Riddler was kinda weird, I guess" and not taking away much the depth to his origins, his motivations and the ironic genius of his scene at Arkham where he says to Batman that he's not as smart as he thought he was while we see his reflection. I even thought it was a genuinely great adaptation that yes, had changes but still retained the base core.
i loved this movie. it has one of the best shots that you don't see as often as you used to. my favorite shot in the film is when Batman's making his way to Falcone, and the power goes out. the camera focuses on a hallway that goes pitch black and you can't see anything except for when the muzzle flash from a gun is fired, and you only see glimpses of Bats beating up the guards. from both a cinematography and artistic standpoint, that shot alone got me hyped
It was lame. Die hard ahd better riddles, the riddler himself is boring (wire in the blood reference, not zodiac) pattinson did'nt act at all... and the catwoman is a rip-off, even in the cast, of hally beey one. plus, i was confused to hear the monologue from "coon and friend" going out of batman non-acting mouth

Do you not see a problem with that?
16:15 I’m surprised you didn’t mention how COOL that startup sequence and 2: how he LET Penguin run away. He LITERALLY revs his batmobile and WAITS for penguin to get in his own car.
This is probably my favorite interpretation of Batman outside of the animated series. I really hope it goes on to have a couple good sequels; I want to see how this Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne develop as people, and definitely how they'd portray some of the other villains. I think the director teased both Hush and the Court of Owls as possible villains for the next films.
I have to say, I thought this was a really interesting way to bring in both Batman Year One and The Long Halloween. Bith stories have gotten a lot of love in both comic books and animated movies. It's nice to see them brought to more mainstream audiences, who may not have seen the animated movies.
The day I watched this in theaters. I was honestly so upset that they teased joker I couldn't appreciate how good the film actually was till the next day.
I think the issue that people like you and Doug had were from a fact that's becoming harder and harder to ignore: as great of a character as the Joker is, he is HEAVILY oversaturated in cinema. If we're going to count the amount of versions of the Joker we've gotten in live action film specifically, then we've gotten FIVE different versions of the character in 33 years. Now that may SOUND like a small number, but trust me it really isn't when you look over DC's filmography (we got Leto, Phoenix, and Kheogan in the span of not even ten years), especially considering the fact that one of these five versions has their own movie (with a sequel on the way), and one of them COMPLETELY sucks (the DCEU version played by Leto). Fact is: If WB is going to continue to do Batman movies as a priority for DC, they should at the very least use villains that have either been barely used or not used at all in film. Yeah this movie used Penguin, Riddler, and Falcone as villains, and they're all villains we've seen adapted into film before, but it's been quite a while since we saw them. Before Farel and Dano, we only had Devito and Carrey from the 90's as Penguin and Riddler represented in live action film. I'd LOVE for The Batman 2 (or whatever it'll be called) to utilize villains like Proffeser Pyg, Mad Hatter, etc. In fact considering how the Nolan trilogy wasted Scarecrow, I would say that Reeves should use him for a sequel. But when it comes to the Joker: people have just had ENOUGH of him. And it's so weird saying that about a character that's so popular and well-liked, but it's the truth.
I heard that in the sequel to The batman, they might go through with having Mr freeze as the villain. If they do that, we'll finally have a proper adaptation of one of the great Batman villains and easily the most sympathetic of them all instead of just to put it in your words "ice puns and ass."
Considering the fact that this movie is establishing a universe that had a similar grounded realism to Nolan's movies, I wouldn't expect a Mr Freeze that's ripped straight from the comic.
@@KristenDETW Sure. but at the same time that just bad movie was out, BTAS had 'heart of ice' which won an emmy and rewrote Freeze's backstory into a sad, much better version.
@@merlyworm I disagree. Mr Freeze was quite frightening in the comics. Not that it matters because we’ll probably get some lame Captain Cold-like one where he kills women and hangs them up in freezers 🙄
I really enjoyed it myself. Even watching this review reminded me I really do want to see the next one. I want to see how the world unfolds. I would like the follow up to focus on a different villian but maybe end a trilogy with the joker who gets a few more hints and eggs of easter in the follow up.
I really loved this movie. It was a good movie. I want to see Hush (Thomas Elliot) as the main villain, if/when they do the sequel. I think this type of a Batman universe could really do Hush some justice. Hold off on The Joker for film number 3 in the series. I liked this video.
With his prominent the digging into the Wayne and arkham family history was here, I would be curious to see the Court of Owls make an appearance. I felt it was hinted at.
Pattinson said his version of Batman was partially influenced by Kevin Conroy's version from Mask of the Phantasm. That alone garners some respect from me (although he honestly did a great job in the role)
I also love the music in this film. It's dark and serious, but it's not just all Han Zimmer drones and bwaaawms or tinkling pianos, there's actual melody to it, but size too. It feels dark and gothic, but also overblown in the right places too.
Given by the legendary Michael Giacchino who gave us Up, The Incredibles, Inside Out and Ratatouille. Sorry to name nothing but Pixar Films for examples.
@@thecunninlynguist That is true, however as a personal favourite… I do like his score to Doctor Strange. I really like the twist that he inspired his villains. He realizes that his whole vengeance message is inspiring the wrong people and at the end he turns to inspire hope. A good character arc that make me excited to see the future of this character and Pattinson’s acting when he thought the riddler found out his identity was so good. He looked so scared that his identity was found out, and then you see his facial expression change so fast when he realizes riddler doesn’t know.
not a twist but yeah its done really well in this movie
I still think it's very possible Riddler does know, but was being careful with his words to keep the enjoyment of his knowledge. His attempted killing of Bruce seems so different from the others and if he figured out the secrets of Falcone, then he could have done the same with Bruce.
@@archercole5271 that a good theory well if he do know he probably ain't going tell nobody
Not a twist really. It’s been floated in the comic and animation lore that the only reason this rogue’s gallery of supervillains exist is because of Batman’s presence.

The cinematography and visuals are great. The opening and closing monologues really represents the first few years of Batman's career.

When Batman led the people out the stadium literally carrying a torch, I remembered his quote, "I am the shadow", and I thought "And now he's become the light". Might be just my interpretation, but I felt that that symbolism was on purpose and I liked it, because it was shown, not told.

I heard that as well and I'm glad someone else will take center stage.

Speaking of the specific humor in this movie, I love the brief running gag of Catwoman having the shit scared out of her, whenever Batman sneaks up on her.
(Raspy Bale Voice) So that's what that feels like....

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, Riddler is so smart that he managed to figure out Batman's identity.
Agreed, he was a great villain imo and I thought Paul Dano was so unnerving in the role. I'm glad they made a great adaptation of another reoccurring villain this time, since the good writing is mostly reserved for Joker and not Batman's other rouges.
but anyone can admit that costume was even worse than the '66 version
I like they went more for a mystery to the Riddler instead of the traditional version we’ve seen from the comics to the animated works and “Batman Forever”. I like he’s a scarier character who isn’t afraid to bash your head in though had they gone the usual route it would’ve been fine

@@CT_Phipps historians: they were good friends and companions/roommates lol

When he gets out he'll try to do something bigger next time.
too bad that was one of the 2 good scenes in the whole movie
Dude what about the riddler?????
@@RogelioALoya I prefer that one guy uh,uh what’s his name…….oh the riddler.

You don't need to make a villain sympathetic. Mad Hatter mind controls women to rape them, he is not sympathetic. However, I absolutely love the idea of using him.

The ending of this made me laugh so much. After seeing Good Time with Robert Pattinson I was excited to hear he was playing The Batman.
Same about the Dark Knight trilogy, I never even finished it. I guess Nolan's style just doesn't suit me.

The Riddler in this is giving me Zodiac Killer mixed with Jigsaw vibes
Agreed, I feel like many people came out of this movie just thinking "This Riddler was kinda weird, I guess" and not taking away much the depth to his origins, his motivations and the ironic genius of his scene at Arkham where he says to Batman that he's not as smart as he thought he was while we see his reflection. I even thought it was a genuinely great adaptation that yes, had changes but still retained the base core.
@@chayden153 I mostly got the Zodiac Killer vibes from him. The Riddler from the Arkham games seemed more to me like what I know of Jigsaw.
yes he is.
You seriously need to know what underrated means
i loved this movie. it has one of the best shots that you don't see as often as you used to. my favorite shot in the film is when Batman's making his way to Falcone, and the power goes out. the camera focuses on a hallway that goes pitch black and you can't see anything except for when the muzzle flash from a gun is fired, and you only see glimpses of Bats beating up the guards. from both a cinematography and artistic standpoint, that shot alone got me hyped
@@MalucoLapin keep crying then and learn that people can like a film whether you do or not.
@@Darin_Tomlinson learn that people Can dislike a movie wether you do or not ! And keep your wrathfull manipulations learned at kindergarten for yourself. I didn't like it, i'm as legitimate as you to give m'y opinion. And you'll notice, small Sissy, that i haven't insulted anybody except the movie. Are you the movie ? No? So shut up.
@@MalucoLapin yes but you don't have to go around telling people the movie sucks that actually enjoyed the movie. Do you not see how much of a buzz kill (and honestly how rude) you're being to people who liked it? I don't care that you don't like it but people don't have to agree with you. How about instead of just saying "it was lame" you say "I wasn't really a fan" or "in my opinion it wasn't that good". Imagine you just watched your favorite movie for the first time and you're telling your friend about how much you loved it and they responded "that movie was shit" and then listed off all the reasons the movie "sucked". Do you not see a problem with that?
nope. need a hug ? :-)
I think what’s underrated is that the visual storytelling did so much for this film
I really wish they didn’t have that scene in there. It was so unnecessary.
@@gamemediafan1714 Right! The Joker has been overused to death. We want other villains to shine!
I love this film's feel, it has the comic booky style of the Burton Films and the realism of the Nolan Films
It's got futuristic tech (eye cameras) but doesn't look futuristic at all which was a great decision
It really looks like it was filmed in 2008 and released in 2021/2022 and I mean that in the best way possible
I remember my whole theater laughed at the, "Thumb. Drive" part. Funniest part of the movie.
Riddler really does do the “this guy moaned at least this loud” scream
I heard that in the sequel to The batman, they might go through with having Mr freeze as the villain. If they do that, we'll finally have a proper adaptation of one of the great Batman villains and easily the most sympathetic of them all instead of just to put it in your words "ice puns and ass."
Considering the fact that this movie is establishing a universe that had a similar grounded realism to Nolan's movies, I wouldn't expect a Mr Freeze that's ripped straight from the comic.
@@gamemediafan1714 Lets hope not. Original Mr Freeze was dopey. Lets hope they use the DCAU's version of his origin.
Arnold had some good scenes in Batman and Robin. I had fun fun with him.
I love how many ideas Reeves copied from the real world and added to here to add a bit more of a edge and some suspense.
I mean Zodiac was the closest thing to a real-life Batman villain we ever got...
I really enjoyed it myself. Even watching this review reminded me I really do want to see the next one. I want to see how the world unfolds. I would like the follow up to focus on a different villian but maybe end a trilogy with the joker who gets a few more hints and eggs of easter in the follow up.
Mr freeze preferably played by Brian Cranston would be amazing
I really loved this movie. It was a good movie.
I want to see Hush (Thomas Elliot) as the main villain, if/when they do the sequel. I think this type of a Batman universe could really do Hush some justice. Hold off on The Joker for film number 3 in the series. I liked this video.
I think this version of the Riddler is also Thomas Elliot.
@@CT_Phipps ::
this version of the Riddler was Edward Nashton
Matt Reeves did say I believe Joker won't be the villain next movie
@@CT_Phipps Riddler was Edward Nashton
I wish critic would have talked more about that. Giacchino is a genius composer and he deserves more attention
The score in this movie is phenomenal.
Given by the legendary Michael Giacchino who gave us Up, The Incredibles, Inside Out and Ratatouille.
Sorry to name nothing but Pixar Films for examples.
@@score-crazyca Giacchino outdid himself, 100%.
@@simona.9730 Well Said my friend, Well Said!
He also did rogue one, which was fantastic. It had hints of Williams' themes and motifs
@@thecunninlynguist That is true, however as a personal favourite… I do like his score to Doctor Strange. Yeah there is an element in the progression which is shared with his score to Star Trek 2009, but the unique instrumentation of using a Sitar and Harpsichord made it much more interesting for me.
I suspect the final two scenes were meant to be after credit sequences, but executive meddling moved them to beforehand. Also, I might be in the minority here, but I like the design of the Riddler's mask. It reminds me of the Zodiac killer.
That mask seems to have become the most recognisable part of the films, to many people
It's supposed to. His whole thing here is Zodiac as hell.
