Do you have a "wonder wobbler"? It's like a small fat fish, chrome and wobbles in the water. It's about 50 yrs old, right at the start of lure fishing. If not I think UA-cam or google would have it. It was very effective.
We are all adding our idea about how to keep them from jumping and throwing the hook, so I will have my go now. :) The most important thing with Kahawai ( which Australians call sea sea salmon ) is that you keep some weight on them the entire time. And the reason is because their mouth has a lot of weak parts compared to other fish, to bite, the fish hinges open its mouth like a bag, and when it is open like that, a large part of it is very thin cartilage with paper thin skin on it. And if the tip of your hook goes through that, it tears a slot in it till the bight of the hook is stopped by the jaw or the hinge structure of the mouth. And then you have almost certainly not got the tip of the hook and the barb set in anything, you are holding the fish entirely by pulling the bight ( inside curve ) of the hook on whatever stopped it pulling through that thin section. Imagine holding up a bucket by crooking your finger around the handle. Now, when you let the weight off the fish, he wags his head, and half the time the hook simply flies free of whatever it is pulling on, and the tear in the skin doesn't stop it. Ad they like to jump, so you have to be ready the instant they do and increase the weight you have on them, because once in the air, they will come towards you much faster, giving themselves some slack. And as we saw in the clip, they throw the hook very often once they are in the air. Once you have caught a lot of them, you will know this is all true because of how often They get free the instant you give them any slack They drop off the hook by themselves at the boat or on the beach You find the tear I am talking about with the hook just laying in it without the tip and barb being in anything. As we saw in the clip.
A swivel between the hook and the lure can help your catch rate. When a fish shakes its head it is essentially using the weight of the lure as a lever to throw the hook. A swivel will absorb most of the head shakes and makes it a lot harder for the fish to throw the hook.
@@secretguyoz2 Do you realise, when you say that, you are telling people you can't type properly, were never trained to do it?. That took me about as long to type as it would have taken to speak. Get gud, scrub.
When the fish is under 20 meters from shore Drop yr rod tip into the water. Helps to prevent fish jumping and spitting hooks out Learnt this when I was 18 chasing herring and tailor. Also works for many other fish
5:53 when the water is flat like that I belt three casts in across the top of the water (to attract attention) then cast to catch I would also want a silver or gold spinner to get lots of flash in clear water.
Hi Roger I have found salmon have very soft mouths , I think this is why we drop a lot of fish while retrieving them, I have swapped to single inline decoy hooks and have had a much greater success , cheers for all the effort and knowledge you share with all of us Markc
I have also found keeping your rod tip down as salmon get closer to the shore line you have a higher chance of landing them if they jump kind regards Markc
In river fishing, i use a feathered double assist hook + a short free flowing stinger hook. The catch rate is v high, no escape when the stinger hook hits. All types of fish cannot resist a shiny micro jig. Yeah! 😂
I was surf fishing once and saw the gulls dive bombing a school of bait fish a few hundred meters away directly in front of me. The school made its way closer and closer until it was within casting distance. Salmon were feeding and forcing the bait fish closer in. Man… that was HUGE fun. Pretty much a hookup with each cast. 3 or 4 were absolutely huge and I actually lost a massive one as it hit the shore break. I’ll never forget that session. 🎣🎣🎣🎣 Edit: Kilcunda beach, Victoria
Keep the videos coming, Roger, they're great! As others have said, I like to swap treble for an inline single hook plus an assist hook. Also when playing the fish I try to keep the rod tip low and at an angle, say 45 degrees either side of me rather than pointing straight towards the fish, hopefully reducing slack line when fish jumps. Having said this you're always going to lose plenty on lures, but it's great fun.
Loving the variety - thanks Roger. Until recently, 90 percent of my beach fishing has been with metal lures. I changed most of my metals over to single hooks a few years ago. I reckon I get a few less bites (action?) but once hooked up, my landing percentage is better.
Thanks Roger for you amazing videos, I actually have you to thank for a lot of the fish I catch, I’ve adopted the stinger rig for my fishing and it works really well
With the rear hook up, not down, you hook the head bones not jaw bones which are weaker. You did get lucky but when the hook is down like you have it, you will lose more fish. 😊
i found with fish that jump and throw the hook , instead of holding the rod straight up in the air as reeling fish in , hold the rod down out to your side and reel it in that way less chance it will jump and throw hooks
I have found that treble hooks don't work well with salmon. I am not sure why but they do seem to be able to shake them off easily. I use a normal straight shank hook instead which improves my catch rate a lot.
As other mentioned, use a front single or double assist hook. On less difficult fish I add a single. On more difficult two is best. The front hooks should also face point forward or its backwards and it won't hook fish as much. Length and size of the assist hook is important also, hook size should be 2-5mm larger than largest size area of the lure looking at the lure sideways. Length of the assist hook should be (length of lure from front to back) slightly less like. 5" less in length from the center of the lure.
Amigo Roger o problema de perder o peixe é quando baixa a cana 😂a meu ver quando estiver a puxar o nylon tem que manter a cabeça do peixe para cima 🐟🐠✌️

Wash ur rod down with fresh water and let it dry Tighten the drag on ur reel and wash with fresh water. Spin the reel to remove excess water loosen drag. Let reel dry and spray the whole reel with a high quality silicone spray to prevent salt ingress and wipe of excess silicone
Do a fair bit of spinning for salmon. Usually replace trebles with single hooks…not because of lost fish. Better fishermen then me reckon the you more likely to stay connected with single hooks but I can’t tell. But I just find trebles do more damage to fish mouth than singles. Also, I use a small ball bearing swivel with a snap…makes lure changes quicker. And if I get time, connect my leader with an FG knot,…no clunking through guides and will probably give you a bit more distance. Great way to fish.
To save on a leader why not just tie onto the main line and save all the hassle, I have a couple of reels with different pound lines and if I don’t want to use the line I have got I just change the reel over to a stronger line or use the lighter one , each to their own , just an idea for different fishing.
Hi and Gday from sunny Queensland , maybe a couple of stinger hooks at the nose of your lure would prevent dropping hooked fish , top vid Roger , thank you , cheers
It amazes me that fish can jump, shake about and throw the hook. A while back, I got a hook in my hand. It got me in the meaty part, near my wrist. Opposite side to my thumb. I stopped for a moment and thought, before pull it out, I want to try to shake it out. I stood there on the beech for about 20 mins trying every thing I could to shake it out. I must have looked a sight to the people walking past. That hook did not budge. Eventually I gave up and just pulled it out. I have no idea how a fish can shake and throw a hook. By the way, I fish barbless hooks.
Ever use or consider using fish friendly single hooks back and front instead of a treble? Taylor usually hammer a hard body lure and cause it damage. You were probably hit by Salmon most of the time
23:40 get some normal straight j hooks, either one or put two opposing on your ring. You need the strait shank to get better hook ups, though salmon are the best lure spitters I know.
