    Thanks for making this video, man. My mom and dad have the same problem on a new fence and my dad just turned 69 last month.. he can do it, but it's getting harder for him, I think.
    I'm gonna get it fixed today while he's at work because you put this up to show me how to get it done

    Man, in the beginning, when you said, "I'll come back later and secure it better," and never got around to it. I was thinking, yup, that's the story of my life on small and easy home projects. 😂

    At some point someone added the lock to the gate, while it was already sagging. You 'fixed' the gate by returning it to this sagging (just not sagging as much as before) state. You should have leveled the gate, and then moved the lock to its correct place. This gate looks horrible, it looks worse than before you started. 10 out of 10 for effort, but 1 out of 10 for results.

    Pretty simple and quick. Defiantly add the wheel. As a farther step you can mark the outside lines of where the brace and fence rails meet (on the brace and the rails of the fence). The remove the brace and use a circular saw to slit those areas between the lines halfway through the rail and braces where they meet. Then clean it up with a chisel to make a notch in the rail and the brace. This will make a half lap in 3 spots. Then apply water proof wood glue like titebond III joint. Then put the braces in and screw it together. Also from the front can screw the pickets into the brace. It will add a extra step or two, but it will look much better from the back and add another layer of stability with the pickets helping the hold the brace and distribute weight. My gate sags bad for other reasons (posts are week and set in a area where drainage pools). The gate it fine... its the rest of the fence that is not holding. I hope to rebuild it and make some additions to fence this year. Going to set the posts a few feet more down and add a bunch of gravel before the cement to help keep it from flexing. I will also be using thicker walled pipe for the corner post and the gate pivot. They are really close together. Will also be tying them together top and bottom.

    My gate installer put the hinges on the inside of the gate. In other words, pretend your hinges were on the side you are working on and your gate opened inwards. Would I need to put the brace then on the outside of my gate or still do it on the inside and just not put it so close to the hinge in the bottom corners? The hinges had to go on that side due to the gate being up against my house and not being able to open outward.

    On the long gate, the folks who assembled, made the cross spars crooked.
    That's why the gare doesn't look right, when they are level.

    Knowing it wasn't level and having to mount the latches to compensate for it, why even bother if you are not going to level it up aesthetically and move the latches. The biggest problem wasn't while you were opening it and having to lift the gate a little, it was that it looked shit while it was shut.

  • @haciendadad
    @haciendadad 3 місяці тому

    You can see another problem that he doesn't notice. The top horizontal support 2x4 looks about 4 inches from the top of the gates picket on the right side, vs the other end of the same 2x4 on the left side where the distance to the top looks about 5 or more inches. I do like the tip to screw in a short board to push up the bottom of the gate,

    My dad's steel gate is dragging. The diagonal brace was done the opposite way with steel rod for tension. The threaded portion of the rod for tensioning and posssibly raising is fully tightened.

    Wait, I'm no home DIYer person but what about the actual gate post that hold the gate assembles. It would seem that should come first to make sure those post are vertically level AND will stay level over time. Adding the 2x4s just made each gate assembly heavier.

  • @John34.
    @John34. 2 роки тому

    Are those 4x4's holding a gate that large? You should have put 6x6's for a gate that large. I cant really tell by the video but it looks like 4x4s

  • @johno4521
    @johno4521 5 років тому +10

    You should have used 2 diagonals per gate, fixing them INSIDE the horizontals, butted up against them, then you could have also put a screw through each (or every other) vertical slat also, making it stronger.

  • @copelandart
    @copelandart 2 роки тому

    NO!!!! The other commenter, Lee McKZenzie was right: it looks worse. And you've added weight, which will make it try to sag more, and possibly pull the gate post crooked. What would have been better would have been some heavy wire, turnbuckles, and screw-eyes. Attach to the bottom inside of the gate, pull it up level by attaching to the top of the gate post. Then attach another wire from there to the bottom of the next post, to balance the force against the post, so all the force on it goes straight down. You may need to make a slight adjustment later, but that'll pretty much do the job!

    That’s still catty wampus! The diagonal brace is depending on screws in shear. Those screws will slowly migrate in the soft plantation grown PT. the gates need full perimeter frames with the braces in the same plane butting said frame. Then the racking loads will bear on wood in compression not just screws in shear.

    I also have a huge gate like you do on the south end of my property. It barely gets used. If I need to get into the back yard with equipment or something it's there. When I put up the fence which is 1x6 I cut dog ears on and 4x4 post 3 feet deep with a bag of concrete in each hole. Corner and gate post are 6x6. Alot of beer went into this fence! I used a small cable with a turnbuckle to brace my gates. I had an old rusty wagon I robbed wheels off of that I lag bolted so the gates could ride on. Had I thought about it before hand I would have left the 6x6 taller and ran the cable from the top of the 6x6 down to the top corners of the gate. Funny how I always look back on thing and say I wish I would have guess my problem is I need to plan better.!!

    • @ASliceofWoodWorkshop

      We live and learn. Most things people will do can be done better. The next thing I will be adding is a wheel on a spring to help hold the gate when it is fully opened. I usually go through this gate at least 4 or 5 times a week.

    What I think happened was Scotty here built a 3 railed fence and was damn proud of it too. Well his wife 3 years later said she was about to get her recently deceased, uncles mobile home and needed a RV access gate, so Scotty not having much money thought fast... He slapped on hinges, He got out the sawzall, cut that beautifil 16 foot section (that didnt have a 4x4 post to begin with) right in half. And he walked in and said baby! You got yourself a brand new RV access gate. Needless to say Scotty got laid that night.
