- words and music by Cole Porter.
On December 18,1940 Judy Garland and songwriter Johnny Mercer recorded 'Friendship' for Decca Records.
in 1941 32 year old Johnny would begin an intense affair with 19 year old Judy. they would continue to have an affair later on. Johnny was greatly affected by this affair and it is said that he considered her the great love of his life. 'That Old Black Magic' and 'I Remember You' were written by Johnny, expressing his feelings for Judy.
The world greatest entertainer singing with the world's greatest song writer. What a perfect couple.
I 'm here from Hollywood series, great old new song!
Cole Porter, fabulous. The rhyming is particularly fun

Brilliant song from Judy Garland’s Archive
I’m in a nursing home in Dublin and I was listening to one of the other residents and her daughter singing this song.
I thought this was created by Mickey and his friends...
But this is great!
clever Lyrics....
my teacher keeps singing this in the middle of class
Cute version.
I read once that the Johnny Mercer song I Remember You was written by him for her. They had had an affair when she was nineteen.
She ended up marrying someone else.
It's a lovely song.
That's true about "I Remember You.". Mercer's wife, Ginger, knew that and would not allow the song to be played in her presence. I love this song because I met a girl in highschool, and she and I had an intermittent romance for the next 30 years. But at the core of it was true friendship. We each thought of the other, "How can anybody BE like you?". Then we'd just laugh. I played this song with Judy and Johnny for my daughter when she was 8, and she thought it was a hoot. Listened to it at least 10 times!
@@tombrown1898Your romance story was very sweet.
Also, your playing this song for your daughter reminded me of the fun I had playing older songs(Crosby's "Swinging on a Star" comes to mind)and laughing with my son when he was a kid.
Although when I first read of your playing the song for your daughter, I was confused. I thought you'd played "I Remember You" for her😂.
NOW it makes sense.
I’m here from redarrowcamp 2021 camp play.
Their friendship was hot alright. ;)

Ha! Yes it was, but I don’t begrudge her-she deserved whatever happiness she could grab! And having someone who loved her that much must have given her interludes of great happiness in a life that had far too much abuse and heartbreak.
Agnis Holloway, aka A.G.N.I.S. brought me here.
Why can't I share this via messaging?
What a funny, charming piece of music! One commenter doesn’t think it is Judy Garland, but although it doesn’t sound much like her, I’m willing to believe that’s because she would have been so young in 1940 and she was trying to disguise her voice. I hope it is the two of them. I always wanted to hear them singing together and I never have unless this is it! It’s definitely Johnny Mercer. Are you sure it’s Judy Garland?
Yep, that's definitely Judy Garland. :)

THANK YOU for responding!! Now that I know it’s her, I can “hear” her better-that’s called confirmation bias, right?
@@elizabethdacosta5601 No problem. You mentioned in your previous comment about wanting to hear Judy and Johnny singing together, well search for Taking a Chance on Love here on UA-cam. It's lovely. :)

Just listened to it! Although it looks like I had listened to it before, I didn’t remember, because I didn’t know their history at the time. It is so lovely and is now on my playlist, which I just learned how to create. It was so kind of you to tell me about it! Think of the great pleasure you have given a complete stranger, who will now enjoy this performance over and over again!
It's our Judy alright. It's on am Looking I purchased in 1980 called Judy Garland. The Beginning. Great album!!!
Lucy & Ethel brought me here
:)))
Who came here from young Dracula 🧛♂️??
Judy's singing voice sounds different in this song
then explain the father of margaret whiting's daughter
why couldn't they stay together?
Oddly, Mr Mercer actually sings this better than Judy does. It's not that she doesn't sing it well, it's just that he is perfect whilst that stunning sparkle is slightly absent for once from my all time favourite female singer, at least to my ears.
I still think i love lucy did it better, but nice to hear the original
Not Judy, might be Johnny
I agree with Henry - I DON'T think this is Judy Garland. Maybe Betty Garrett?
Reference to the book Boo ?
Cindy Koehn That can’t be Judy.
I admit that I want it to be Judy Garland, but if you consider she would only have been 18 in 1940, and that she was obviously trying to disguise her voice, couldn’t it be her? I always wanted to hear them singing together and never have unless this is the two of them. Theirs was such a heartbreaking love story; I always wondered if her life would have been easier if they could have married. She needed someone who loved her that much.
That's Judy.
kinda corny but quite/
Music was immature back then, glad I wasn't around
Dope
I wish you weren’t around now

Surprisingly bad version of a good song.
