    How can you not like the look of this bike? I Can't comprehend that.

      I know right! The only reason one would get a Bonneville is to turn it into a Café Racer... here Triumph have done it for you already and it's the prettiest Café out there. How on earth can someone prefer the look of the Bonnie!

      I like the look of the traditional bonnies but as a cafe racer it's the prettiest thing out there. And hear that exhaust!

  • @wordreet

    I love it!
    It's ironic that the "Cafe Racer" became a "look", when you consider that back in the day, the idea was just to strip everything unnecessary off the bike and add stuff like rear set foot rests and drop bars, to allow the rider to lighten the machine and achieve a more aerodynamic racing crouch. The whole thing was originally about function and not style.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +2

      +wordreet Yeah, good observation, fashion eh?!

    • @Ritalie

      The thing is, shapes and angles create beauty. And a tear drop shaped gas tank has never looked good, not then, and not now. The square cafe race style gas tank, and square angles on a cafe racer looks so much better than the American style tear drop, tapered gas tank. What makes a cafe racer is the shape of the gas tank. Square vs. round. Round tear drop gas tanks look like shit, and they ruin the look of a motorcycle, unless you are specifically trying to make a cruiser. The 1977 XS400, 1976 Honda CB360cc, and the 1972 Z1 900cc are examples of stock bikes that have the square "cafe racer" body lines. It's all in the gas tank. Putting clip on bars, is all that is all that is required to give it the final piece. The worst thing ever is when people remove side plates, and leave a gaping hole in the frame, or when they try to remove the rear fender (for no particular reason).

    Bought a Thruxton R in June, after 6000km it still puts a huge grin on my face. Deceptively fast on acceleration and one of the most fun bike I have ever ridden. You don't need to go 250kph to enjoy yourself, I prefer it over the r nine t.

    The only Thruxton I've ridden was on an extended ride at my dealer's 'Open House' several years back. I can truly state that bike had more 'character' (positive!) than any bike I rode that day - rode every last one of them on a 20+ mile circuit through the countryside. I enjoyed your review - Triumph Fan.

    Thorough and honest review as always - Thanks a lot. "Clip-ons for old men" - Ha. I resemble that remark - Just turned 1000 miles on mine so the break-in period is officially over. The annual Oregon Vintage Motorcycle ride is tomorrow. Can't wait to go have some fun and show it off! Note: The top clamp isn't chrome, but very highly polished aluminum. Brilliant, but scuffs easily (then you can re-polish it?).

    I sat on one and found it's detail captivating. It needs the racer inspiration kit fitted. Once that ugly rear mudguard is junked, it's wearing tiny LED indicators, the V&H race pipe is fitted and the Suzuki Dunstall / Ducati inspired dustbin fairing is in place; it then all starts to look stunning and sound pukka! If I didn't already have a bike on order, I'd be tempted...

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    Great Review again ! - When you compare the sound of the HT-Engine in the T120 and the HP-Engine in the Thrux - which sounds louder? Deeper? - I think, the new Thrux sounds more like an areoplane; the t120 is more a thumper ? (I 've test-driven the t120, but not yet the thruxton)

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +2

      +Toni R The Thruxton sounded better to my ears although there's not a whole lot in it as stock - I dare say they would both sound much better with another pipe....that would be the first change I'd make. You'll enjoy the Thruxton, quite a different ride to the T120.....cheers - TMF

    Can you please talk about the top gear ratio, the crusing RPM, and the engine vibrations, and engine RPMs at 60mph, in your reviews? We need to know how these motorcycles feel when cruising at speed. Many bikes have very short gear ratios, like the early Triumph Rocket. But nobody talked about it, until they wasted their money and bought one.

    best review I have seen on the triumph thruxton r, you touched on all the subjects I was curious about. One question I have tho when you said it was a bike for the riders, what did you mean?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 років тому +1

      Did I say that? I imagine I meant that it has top quality components (Brembo's, Ohlins, etc) and unless you ride the thing with some gusto, these would possibly be wasted on you.....

    Great review. How would you compare it to your Street Triple in terms of handling / power?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +1

      +The Incredible Sulk No comparison, even though my Street Triple is half the engine size it feels more powerful and urgent (due the triple engine), handling wise they both feel very different, the Thruxton is more stable, the Street more skittish/agile. The Street Triple of course is more powerful at high RPM in pure BHP terms and is significantly lighter (plus looks better in my opinion).

    Beautiful bike. The Thruxton is the bike that started my interest in Triumphs. But after watching a bunch of these great reviews and stopping by my Triumph dealer here in New Hampshire, USA, I think I've settled on the T-120 Black. @Ryzen_56X 6 років тому +2

    I've test ridden one recently and I have to say I did not like it very much, many factors involved on my riding experience with this bike, great looks and details nice to look at it when you are seating next to in a cafe bar or parked in the street but it does not transmit joy and connection with me as biker. Engine is ok but prefer more power, brakes and suspension do the job nicely, riding position not too comfy for long rides, did not like the feel of the engine. Having test ridden other models such as the XJR1300 2016, Honda CB1100RS 2017 and BMW T Nine R I have to say I connected immediately with the CB1100RS, great job by Honda on this model, if you can get a test ride you'll know what I mean. Other than that great video, review and Thruxton R for nostalgic cafe racer guys. Cheers, safe riding mates.

    I put a Deposit to this after the test ride , i felt so connected i can't explain ! i just love the build quality. after i put the deposit i also think of the 2016 Triumph Speed Triple R. So the dealer give me the option to switch if i want. as much as i love the Speed Triple R , the fueling was so good on Thruxton better then Speed Triple R, did you manage to est ride that ? what is your thoughts? i do ride 2 up alot , i talk with some friends they said both Thruxton and speed triple will be similar for carrying pillion. What are your thoughs on that. I am really in between this two bikes now afer i test ride both :)
    you can add a quick shift and heated grips and lots of other extras to thruxton R too. but obviously Speed triple had additional Tyre pressure monitor system could be added. Thank you for the review!

    Easy enough to de-Cafe it with a different Triumph seat (Scrambler, Street Twin or T120), move bar position upward with risers and get rid of the bar end mirrors for some Rizomas, adjustable footpegs to move them forward a bit and add a small wind screen. Bam!

    First of all thanks TMF for doing this review. I would have liked the bike to sound better. I was expecting it to sound as good as the Triumph Scrambler you also reviewed. There seems to be an issue from seeing other revues that riders hit their knees with the curved edge on the tank when they rode close up front. Had any issues?
    I can't understand how people compare this bike to a Speed Triple. They're both bikes with a big engine surely but oh so different. The engines alone have different characters. The Triple has a better setup in general benefiting from developments done to bikes through the years. A longer travel rear single shock is one of them as are the ergonomics. The Thruxton is the best Triumph could have done with yesteryear's styling. That imaginary flat horizontal line running from the underside of the tank to the seat is a determining design cue. As are the twin piggyback shocks. Credit goes to Triumph for making these bikes ride so good under such limitations.
    So, cutting it short;
    Speed Triple = modern, no compromise riding machine,
    Thruxton = a great looking machine (for those who like the style) which also rides pretty well. One thing the Thruxton has in it's favor is that it will age well. If you'e into retro it will still look good in twenty years time the Triple would still be capable but you'd be wanting that year's incarnation.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +stephen spiteri No issues with the knees Stephen, but then I'm not a big chap. I completely agree with your comparison re the Speed Triple - completely different beasts - but both brilliant in what they do. All credit to Triumph for this new Thruxton though, the handling was great, I personally don't care for the styling though. Thanks for watching as ever, hope all is OK at home - thinking of you pal - TMF

      Thanks mate. I'm currently back in hospital with Thomas after he was released this morning. He went back to having a temperature and is very weak. Sad to see a little boy constantly in pain.
      Enough of that... I agree with you that Triumph have upped their game significantly since they introduced the street triple. They haven't looked back and are producing well made and desirable machines. The Thruxton isn't to everybody's taste but to those who love retro nothing comes close. Other brands have their own take on retro but nothing as competitive or that can be practically used every day. Personally though I wish they gave the same R treatment to the T120 and also to the smaller engined street twin. I for one prefare the compact usable package of the street twin. Giving it the bells and whistles of the R would make it more desirable. Most would be willing to shell out an extra grand of two for upside down forks, brembo and ohlins if they're in the bandwagon. Agree?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +stephen spiteri err possibly, to me having very modern parts on a retro bike somehow detracts from the overall vibe, a bit like what I felt when I rode the Ducati Scrambler - bit too much a mix of modern and old, doesn't quite work for me, but accept I'm probably in a minority here. Hope you have a good night, best wishes to you and all your family - TMF

    Hey, don't poke the poke of the 900s. This is why they have transmissions. At 50 or 60 if you want to pass someone, ya kick it down once maybe even twice and instant poke 💯✌️. But I know what you mean. I went from a Honda CB 750 four, to a Yamaha VMAX. And though the honda could slide you back in the seat, the VMAX made you white knuckle when vboost kicks in.
    1200 is a better tour bike but I've ridden from fla to Chicago in 2 leisurely days on my t100. Well 2 days and 3 hours . Cruising at 75, and it did just fine. But it doesn't matter. Long rides are only fun if time doesn't matter.

      +minicopilot1 Great question and everybody will have their own answer. I traded in my '14 Street Triple for a Thruxton R - the Street was an awesome, awesome bike - quite the dainty ripper for sure - Do the ton in a blink, sounded fantastic with aftermarket pipe, so... why did I trade? To be honest the bikes feel about equal to me. Both haul ass, but in different ways. This TxR will just rip you back in the seat from 3000 to 7000. You can be doing 50 on a two lane highway behind a truck in 6th and pull out to pass and by the time you're at his front bumper you're doing 80 with a mighty roar and thrust. The Street Triple was the same, but at a higher rev and a lower gear. FFS! That little triple would do 100 in 3rd !! For me... it mostly came down to looks. I grew up drooling over the Manx racers and now I have one. I bet you could line up 100 guys, half under 40 and get a pretty clear divide over which bike the groups would prefer. Both awesome bikes. Personally, I"m really happy with my choice.

      +John Benton Yes it's great to see that they've upped their game so much - and they weren't bad before!

      Being of considerable age, I can remember Triumphs in the days of the 21 and Speed Twin. Their slogan then was "The Best Bike in the World" and now it seems truer. My favourite bike ever is the Velocette Thruxton Venom. In it's day, nothing could live with it; we're looking at a 500cc single that would cruise at 100 mph as long as there was fuel in the tank. But then I'm biased.

    Like the looks actually, just can't help thinking that you could get a lot of bike for the best part of 12k, I know this is a niche machine that centres around image but when you compare it to the likes of a BMW S1000R it starts to look, well, a bit of a posers ride.

      +Lee McDonald 100% agree - nice machine but I would have thought £10K would be nearer the mark - as you say £12K (+ any extras like a pipe needed) is a lot of cash for this type of machine...you could have an R Nine T for that (which IMO looks better) if you must go retro - or a very nice custom Triumph Scrambler (air cooled) with cash to spare...

      +Lee McDonald Hadn't thought about it like that until I read your comment. Couldn't agree more, Lee... And you'd get a lot of change if you bought a KTM 690 Duke R!
