    After watching these video's since 2016 and dreaming of getting a Thruxton R I can't believe I now have one. Got it - a 2016 model which joins my 2017 T120 and my other two bikes.

    People outside the US dream about a Harley ride around different areas of the US. Here I am in the US dreaming about a Triumph around the UK.

      That's funny! I'm from the States but when I think about motorcycles my mind's eye goes to British twins.
      Interesting because as you say many Americans think of HD and my older cousins had Kawasaki Z1s,

    I loved this bike when I test road it around the lanes of Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Cambridgeshire a couple of summers ago. I had it for a day. Unfortunately it felt a little slow and soft as I had ridden the Street Triple RS the day before again for a whole day. But never the less I still loved it. Of the two I now actually look back as enjoying this more although the STRiple RS was dammed good fun. I wouldn't choose to ride this bike in central London. So used to watching RJ riding his Nuda, BMW S1000R or SDR that this Thruxton R seems positively tame. But still a nice bike, the best of Triumph's retros imho.

    • @motobob
      @motobob  5 років тому

      I think that either the 1200 Scrambler or the Speed Twin would be my pick of the retros now. But out of all of them I bought the Street Twin because it’s the most practical around town - enough torque, manoeuvrable, good 2 up, and possibly most importantly less nickable than a thruxton!

    All the new generation Triumph twins now have 270 degree crank including the Thruxton sadly. It's done to reduce the secondary vibration (the high frequency annoying vibes), but doesn't have the traditional British twin sound. Previous generation Thruxton and Bonneville had 360 cranks but Scrambler and America had 270 crank

    • @motobob
      @motobob  6 років тому

      I love the sound of the 270, but appreciate what you're saying that it doesn't sound traditional.

      Perhaps using 'just like' is a bit too much. Definitely 'a lot like' is appropriate. When you put the mic in your back pocket I did notice a little more throat on the R than mine.

    • @motobob
      @motobob  6 років тому

      Might sound a little different cos the firing order is 270 degrees and I think the previous generation are 360. Either way they both sound great in my experience! 👍

      MOTOBOB Don’t know how I missed this till now! I can imagine mate, must have been hectic in the MB household! I’m all good actually man, sold the bike as you impressively remembered and missing it massively. I’m currently looking at some bandit 650’s as I’m not going down the clip on route again! Full systems are cheap and they unleash that monstrous sound! Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year’s Day?! Just seen the new vid too, shame about the er6 but new bikes are insanely exciting! I'm seriously considering this bike. How is it on the lower back? I had the 2010 thruxton and on long rides my back was killing me.

    • @motobob
      @motobob  5 років тому

      Didn’t ride for long enough but I don’t think the position is any more relaxed than the previous thruxton. A test ride would be the only way to know for sure as everyone is different, but if long distance comfort is a consideration then maybe the speed twin is a better choice? Same motor, lighter than the thruxton, and a more upright position

  • @whittlad
    @whittlad 5 років тому +4

    A nice review of a great bike. However, each to their own I guess but what's the point of buying a bike that costs over £12k new and yet you only use 1st & maybe 2nd gear for poncing around London everyday. There are traffic lights every 100 yards, speed bumps/car/van/lorry and bus drivers with about as much peripheral vision as an oil tanker to deal with as well as suicidal pedestrians. Just buy a scooter and ditch the hipster look.

    • @motobob
      @motobob  5 років тому +4

      Prob wouldn’t recommend it for town, but if somebody else did I wouldn’t begrudge them. Like you say it’s each to their own! I own a Street Twin which is a more practical riding position for town, but even so I still get a lot of comments saying I should get a 125 or a scoot. Not sure why anyone cares which bike I ride! But anyway, I can only keep one bike so a street twin is a good town commuter as well as capable on the motorway and twisties if I fancy it at the weekend and even a couple of days trip with saddle bags. Whereas a small scooter is purely for town. That’s my rationale anyway 🙃

  • @robinbasulto9313

    Do you think it can beat a 600cc supersport? I know the 600 will probably have a higher top speed, but does the Thruxton have at least the same acceleration or handling?

    • @motobob
      @motobob  6 років тому

      The geometry is meant to be the same as the speed triple, so the handling should be up to scratch. Especially as the suspension is so good. As for acceleration, I don’t know. It’s a different beast tho - quite a grungy twin, whereas a 600 super sport will need to be revved.

    • @Pillokun
      @Pillokun 5 років тому

      Thruxton R has nothing to say when it comes to supersport 600. Thruxton R feels more like the old school of Musclebikes, it feels heavy and slow when you push it hard on windy roads/technical sections. Definitely nothing like a modern bike, ie a st3,mt09,duke790 or cb1000r,monster,z900rs or anything like that.
