    Idk. My pinkies and my index finger are bent from landing blows when the person was blocking. Nothing serious though. The joint on the index feels a bit weak when i press an elevator button or whatever the finger aches. All it takes is one bad angle you can't take the punch back

    I've always been suspicious about the whole no punching thing; i figured it was just my hands that were built different. I punched a wall once (pine board on top of concrete), there are still dents the shape of my first two knuckles on that board. Didn't break my hand, I barely felt it, no pain, just.. a shock running up my arm all the way to my upper back.

  • @VicNorth2023
    @VicNorth2023 8 місяців тому +2

    Firstly - To use those two knuckles correctly you need to force your fist to be at a right angle i.e. the finger knuckles don't protrude beyond the large knuckles. Check your fist by placing your fist palm down against a wall. If the finger knuckles connect first you have a problem. Remedy is push ups on your fists until you have the correct shaped fist. Also a fist with palm down is weaker at the wrist than a vertical fist so note it is also possible to damage your wrist. Also note that when a fist meets an elbow your fist will come off worse and the same goes for someones head if their forehead is down. Remember if you break your hand you have lost the use of a weapon. Whether you use the horizontal fist (palm down) or vertical fist (palm inwards) depends upon the target and range. Punching correctly house bricks can be broken, incorrectly will permanently damage your hand. Remember boxers wrap their hands for a reason and still some of them break or damage their hands.

      The other day I was sharing the corner with a very successful trainer who has produced 4 World Champions. He has been wrapping hands for 50 years successfully and it surprised me how little his wrapping method was... And when I asked why... He said that the smallest and the most simple/basic the wrapping is the better... And he has been successful with it for 5 decades

    Depends. If you got weak ass wrists. Those two larger knuckles are not good because of alignment. So it messes up the wrist. When it all comes down to it. Its just training you fists on whatever method toward realistic scenarios. From toughening up knuckles. Strengthening wrists and alignment.

  • @marcuspacheco3815
    @marcuspacheco3815 8 місяців тому +2

    I was about to correct this video with bare knuckle lessons from karate about using the top two sets of knuckles.... But.... you gave the exact same lesson. Awesome! I would add one thing, when we twist, its not for safety & its not for power. Its for "targeting". Ideally you want your punch to land in same direction the bones of your target are aligned, to spread the force over as few targets as possible. Example: ribs, they go side to side, they are stacked horizontally. So you want to hit them with your fist turned (palm down or palm up) so that you're hitting one or two of them and not spreading the force over 4-5 of them. It can easily be the difference between breaking one and a nasty bruise. The face is arranged the opposite way and vertical punches hit smaller areas everywhere but the mouth/jaw. One way might wiggle some teeth lose the other is a ko.

      I can't take the credit for that, it comes from karate, okinwan Shorin-ryu karate. Which is an og karate. I fortunately had done some boxing before and shopped a lot of Karte schools before finding that one. It has allot of great self defense tips. You fight with tight movements. It looks like Muay Thai and boxing had a baby. That's not to say it's perfect. Like I said, I had some boxing before and so I definitely gleened more from class than most and it has problems. Kata for one, slowest down progression and skill caps you. You don't do head contact until green belt (has 5 belts green is in the middle) and it wastes time with weapons. Unlike boxing which is super focused and raises your skill fast. However boxing has some stuff that doesn't work as well outside the ring. Like hooks that connect with the pinky (as you pointed out) or not having those big gloves to hide behind irl. Plus it's incomplete, no leg attacks no take downs. But given how hard it is to throw kicks in most self defense scenarios because of range boxing by itself leaves you better off than most. Unlike taekwondo, which was useless, The two have left me more than capable of defending my self and I can say have both saved my butt on at least 3 occasions. 2 times I was defending someone else and the third I had no choice it was 3:1. One of those I dropped a guy so hard he didn't wake up for several minutes. Which leads me to another point you need some ground game. That guy, was drunk and could have been restrained, instead of ko-ed in a parking lot. I wish I had known a better way to deal with him. That's why I was looking into Judo / Jiu-Jitsu just before covid. I liked judo it seems to mesh nicely with my stand up game, your milage may vary. If you're still in school go wrestle, while it's free. Anyway the point of all this is
      1. I don't think any one thing has all the answers. You should always cross train a couple of things, preferably one striking one grappling.
      2. Some things are useless, martial arts are buyer be ware. I find the short list are Boxing, muay Thai, Karate (legit actual karate) - wrestling, judo, BJJ. With the only caveat being something that uses two of those things. Like kudo is karate & judo or sambo judo+grecco Roman wrestling. Everything else is a big maybe.... There is even a problem with finding a place that teaches you the thing is advertised to teach you. Like, some places say "karte" but then it turns out they don't even teach karate. They are using it like an advertising word and instead teach some bs that doesn't work. Or they teach "Muay Thai" but it's really a thai-bo cardio class. It's bs. It's so hard to find a real gym / school. People really should not train wherever they have fun. Those fake mcdojo places should die & the bad styles should die. How is taekwondo in the Olympics? But Karte is not and they made judo modify itself to stay in? That's insane.
      3. People need a lesson on how to know if where they are going is even legit. They need to know how to sniff out the bs. I care so much about this, as a kid I went to taekwondo. Like I said. Then one day in high school I was attacked by an adult on the street. I got the crap kicked out of me. Fortunately I didn't get permanently injured. Fortunately my grandfather was a former semi professional boxer. He then started teaching me. With that I could sus out what was legit and what wasn't. Without that I would be a victim, both in the street and in the school.
      I hope you can, with your platform, come up with a way to pass that knowledge on. The targeting ribs lesson is cool and all but if you can teach people how to find training.... Come up with some kind of a list, like testing under pressure (sparing) at least once a week. Simple moves being the bread and butter (no crazy spinning kicks that don't work when you're cornered), and it being effective against resisting people.... Etc. That is more important for people to understand. And press upon them they have to go out and do it irl. At least then they can get the basics and put up some kind of a fight if the get attacked. Punching back effectively is more important than punching perfectly.

    Devils advocate: if you punch with a vertical fist. How can you hit with he top 2 knuckles? Only bottom 3 knuckles bottom would land the index knuckle doesn't. Unless you bend your wrist but then your wrist could sprain?
    Secondly if you do a push up on the top 2 knuckles - your wrist always buckles. Isn't this proof that the top 2 knuckles for most people are weaker? Not because they'll break but because you aren't as stable?

    • @raullm6820
      @raullm6820 8 місяців тому +3

      With vertical fist and specially if you have some conditioning done and your hand is mildly strong at least...your fist still works like a block, nearly like a stone if it's properly close.
      The irregularity you mentioned actually makes the first 2 knuckles to land first than the other 2 normally in any case.
      * Very good points in any case

      @@raullm6820 thanks for the reply... But how do the first 2 knuckles land in a vertical fist? If you put your fist against a wall in a relaxed position, does your index knuckle touch the wall?

      At least in my case I am literally doing it now out of curiosity.... Sorry I can't post a video in the chat apparently!
      The vertical punch is quite normal in Bare Knuckle Boxing for instance
      * In any case it's better obviously not to land completely vertical BUT turning the hand and having the index knuckle lets say it at "5 past 1" at least.
      ** Strengthen the grip and the wrist is also a great thing to do regularly too, so thanks for pointing that out too

    How are you going to knock your way through the wall and get the million pounds without a tool? Going to punch your way through or use palm strikes?
    That said, I agree with the core idea that in order to avoid injuring yourself, you're better off using some sort of weapon in a fight (probably not a cumbersome sledgehammer though) because it lets you hit something hard with something hard and when one of them breaks it's not a part of your body.
    To directly compare a punch with a palm strike you'd want to try to keep the body mechanics as close as possible (IE throw a lead hand straight punch vs a lead hand straight palm strike etc.) hit something hard like a brick wall at 10%, 20%, 30% and so on until you break yourself. I'm totally guessing here because I don't want to break my hand (again), but I'd probably break a metacarpal at about 30-40% with a punch and I'm honestly not sure what would happen with a palm strike, it would probably be 60-70% at least before a wrist fracture.
    It's like if someone pushes you over from behind and you land into a press-up to stop your face hitting the floor, you're not going to double punch your fists into the ground are you, you'd stop yourself with your palms.
    I realise there are other factors to consider, punches concentrate the kinetic energy into one or two points (the tips of the knuckles) so they have more piercing sort of damage and do much better on soft targets, palm strikes have an inch or two less range than punches, palm strikes leave your fingers floating so they might get caught up in clothing and potentially break like that, palm strikes look better on CCTV and in court because you are "pushing" or "slapping" your attacker. There's a lot more to think about than which lets you hit harder without breaking a bone.
    Personally I would tend to advise people to use palm strikes for self defence, particularly the Fairbairn combatives type of palm strikes, can't beat a good chin-jab. Punching 100% does work though and it's fine if that's what you're into, boxing is massively popular in the UK and a lot of people have the whole "if all you have is a hammer then all of your problems look like nails" mentality, lets be real you'll probably find 100 martial arts classes that teach punching for every 1 that teaches palm strikes, and none of the palm strike classes are actually sparring with palm strikes. It's understandable why punching would be massively more popular even if it's maybe not as "good".
