there are many ways to get it (all involving repetition). I discovered similar effects years ago just dorking around. This is of course a very elegant method!
Nice tutorial. For beginners and maybe higher, recommend slowing down the video to .5 speed and muting music. What you can learn from this tutorial: Actions, Filters, and more.
I made/discovered these patterns at art college in 1980 by photocopying a photocopy, then repeated it many times over. After leaving I had an incredible, long creative career but not by taking photocopies. Now I'm retired I'm learning Adobe software.
Also known as vermiculation; a type of decorative patterning carved into stone building blocks. The root word 'vermis' is Latin for worm. Nice to know how to generate it in PS.

There's a documentary on Netflix about how they were all designed. Very interesting. The whole series is, actually. If interested, check out Abstract - The Art of Design.
any help appreciated... i get as far as trying to alter threshold but the adjustments are all greyed out. Looked it up and got round this by pressing q, but now previews not available and does not appear in smart filters drop down in layers window?? confused
By the way this is Photoshop tutorial. Threshold adjustment will turn any image to white and black. So the easiest way to change the pattern color using "blend if" to remove the white/black part, then you can clipping mask any color to the pattern. Or you can bring the result from Photoshop to Illustrator and do live trace. You will get the vector pattern

Can you show us a tutorial for the thumbnail of this particular video. Like the picture looks in 3D space with the shadow and background
It's mind-boggling how anyone even discovered these filters would create the effect.

for anyone wondering, GIMP's "render clouds" is hiding in filters>render>noise>solid noise
Yes, but requires slightly different values to get the PS clouds equivalent: 6 for the Detail and 3 for the X/Y Size.
Really cool idea, I love these patterns! I would have never considered that use of the ever-useful rendered clouds.

is there a similar way to do this in inkscape?
does inkscape have high pass, noise and blur filters?
