      there are many ways to get it (all involving repetition). I discovered similar effects years ago just dorking around. This is of course a very elegant method!

    I made/discovered these patterns at art college in 1980 by photocopying a photocopy, then repeated it many times over. After leaving I had an incredible, long creative career but not by taking photocopies. Now I'm retired I'm learning Adobe software.

    Also known as vermiculation; a type of decorative patterning carved into stone building blocks. The root word 'vermis' is Latin for worm. Nice to know how to generate it in PS.

    I love Alan Turing's story, I love Graphic Design and now I love Turing patterns. Your way of teaching is excellent. Thank you. Why the name is "Turing" Pattern?

      Yes, but requires slightly different values to get the PS clouds equivalent: 6 for the Detail and 3 for the X/Y Size.

    any help appreciated...
    i get as far as trying to alter threshold but the adjustments are all greyed out. Looked it up and got round this by pressing q, but now previews not available and does not appear in smart filters drop down in layers window?? confused

    This is amazing! I am novice on Ai so how did you change the color? Why did you go with black and white? I like the yellow better.

      By the way this is Photoshop tutorial. Threshold adjustment will turn any image to white and black. So the easiest way to change the pattern color using "blend if" to remove the white/black part, then you can clipping mask any color to the pattern.
      Or you can bring the result from Photoshop to Illustrator and do live trace. You will get the vector pattern
