Well, I suppose that may be true, but that is a pretty vague statement. If they have 90% of their staff working on Starfield and 10% on ES6 they are technically working on them in tandem... That said it would be crazy of them to try and develop both fully at the same time as they only have that much staff. What I expect is that Starfield is pretty much story complete with a lot of the quests and activities already designed, so the story and quest design staff have moved over from Starfield to ES6 and once Starfield releases the rest of the crew will then start on ES6 full time.
I think Todd is excited that he's more free from the tencent influence. Yes they are still share holders, but do you think they will be able to veto Microsoft? No. That means more money, more creative freedoms. That's what Todd meant. He's more excited now
If the overhaul is big enough it could almost be like a completely different engine. As an example unreal engine 5 is nothing like unreal engine 1 because its been overhauled over and over The question isn't if an overhaul is a good idea The question is how big of an overall it will be
The problem with bethesda's engines is they lack polish and have many unused and broken features, if they have been given the correct time to refine the engine, they can pull off a blockbuster RPG with the same impact morrowind had back on the OG xbox.
@@solidstatedrive agreed, but MS seems to be interested in getting something gamers want out there even if it means delaying where Zenimax was just pushing them to release and seemed to not want to spend to update engine.
Todd said "rewrite" not "overhaul". For those who work with programming for a living, a rewrite is basically a clean slate. You keep the concepts but you gradually remove ALL old code and replace it with new paradigm code and practices. He is essentially saying that they are creating a brand new engine, that will take inspiration from the best (we can hope...) concepts of the old one.
Look up “the creation engine did nothing wrong”. The creation engine has solid foundations but can’t be taken care of by Bethesda like say rockstars engine. Bethesda is the one that needs a top to bottom rework.
Because bethesda are always rushed to push their products out without the needed time or QA. i don't know who manages their QA but it definately needs to improve. I'll probably pirate their games on day 1 just to see how broken they are.
That's what they're doing, using starfield as a basis to fix up all the wrongs for creation so that people can look past it's simple bugs and see a truly magnificent piece of technology.
Yeah which is why I let people know I heard that Bethesda has vastly expanded their engine team. We will only truly be able to tell with Starfield when we lay eyes on it, but for now I believe it.
Honestly I would love for Phil Spencer to make Starfield and upcoming Bethesda Games exclusive. It will bring the so call "Console War" the competition. Plus it will be very satisficing to put the massive toxic PS fanboys in there place. Also I don't see them making the future games available for PlayStation considering the fact that they made a 7.5 billion dollar deal with Bethesda
Darth They made the deal to make money off of bethesda, not to sell consoles. But maybe, just MAYBE, it will be Microsoft exclusive. I hope so, I really want my new PC to have the best games out there.
@@vansharora5859 I know that but I'm just saying 7.5Billion Dollar Deal to Bethesda there has to be a high chance for Xbox to make the newest games exclusives
I’m not so sure. I think it’s still a ways away but it really comes down to what makes the most money for Microsoft. Last I checked both companies make more money off of online game sales than consoles themselves. So if that’s still the case then the games probably won’t be exclusive
Darth Sorry I’m a little confused by the question. Specific games I’m not sure of but to my understanding it’s for most games available on either platforms store. That’s why there is a digital ps5, it’s to fully capitalize on making direct money from those games for the next 7 years.
I remember how awesome it was the first time I played Oblivion when I shot an arrow at a bucket hanging off a rope and the weight of the arrow sticking out of the side of the bucket tilted the angle the bucket was hanging. I hope to see more small upgrades that make the world feel more real and like it exists even when I'm not there.
This is really exciting and I anticipated this. The jump from Morrowind to Oblivion/Fallout 3 will be the equivalent in advancement from Fallout/Skyrim to Starfield. It has to be significant to compete with everybody else out there pushing the limits of the new hardware. I am super excited and I know Bethesda is going to deliver on making it "theirs" and truly original and extraordinary. This is the reason to own the new Xbox
I've said this in a few places now and haven't noticed anyone picking up on it yet. Bethesda were developing cloud based gaming software tech that could be a perfect fit for XCloud which Microsoft would probably love to have exclusive access to if it's any good. (see previous E3 presentations for details)
@ The Rusted Dybamo Some channels spoke about it, and it is very interesting tech of which Im sure Microsoft will find good use for it. The same goes for the game engine from Arkane, and there is another studio which has their sophisticated engine, but Bethesda tech R&D department is topnotch.
What people have got to consider is that this acquisition didn’t just occur overnight, Zenimax is a huge publisher this has been in the planning for at least a year or two
You can keep replacing parts of the engine to make it better, more modern. One bolt, screw and piston at a time. At what point does it become a whole new engine?
Idk, engines are a physical thing you can touch, a lot of old code will still be there if the code isn't bad, so it'll be a new engine when ALL the code is different.
7:28 Todd Howard joked that "we are closer to showing it than we were in the beginning of this conversation." Pete Hines' gesture, a head shake, to indicate "no" shows that the release is a long way off, possibly not before 2022.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been trying to find out what all changed from Morrowind to Oblivion and I’ll be damned if it isn’t a lot more than I realized.
I like that this news has reenergized you and your channel (Its honestly done more for gaming in general already. I'm hopeful for the first time in a long time )
Love the channel. Just a critique from a filmmakers. Auto focus is not your friend. Gotta watch out for that. My suggestion, before filming, turn in all the lights, dial focus in, then you can turn your lights back down.
I'm a vindictive person so if I was in charge of exclusivity with Bethesda, I'd definitely keep it from Sony. And that's hard for me to say, considering I play Playstation.
As someone who used to watch UA-cam for 6 hours or more everyday and now watches less than that in a week, this is one of the only channels I still enjoy. That and occasional tech news and Gemeranx' Friday news show.
As a developer, I have to say that simply throwing more people (money) at a problem doesn't in any way guarantee a better result. A small team of very talented and motivated people could easily do better than a larger team of "grunts". Typically, management thinks if 5 people would take x months to finish, then 10 people should take half the time, but don't bet on it.
There are a couple things Gopher said on his most recent podcast that I fully agree with: -New Vegas 2 if you had Bethesda build the world and Obsidian do the quest structure/dialogue, could be a masterpiece. Both studios have their strengths. -They should keep the same engine because at the end of the day, the Gamebryo/Creation engine makes Bethesda games very accessible for modding, and the ease of modding is why after a decade games like Skyrim are still as relevant as they are. It's a simple truth, the ease with which you can mod them is a big strength for any Bethesda game.
Keeping the same engine but pushing the know-how and resources needed to mod. For example look at the clip of Shirley. Can a modder do that to make a new NPC? This happens every gen but just hope it's not making the game less accessible.
WIthout the Creation Engine, Bethesda games wouldn't be what they are. You wouldn't have the insane level of detail and interactivity and the complexity of NPCs without it. Also, mods.
Bethesda E3? Matty, there won't be any more Bethesda event at E3, all games will be shown in the Xbox presentation. And i really want to see how will Microsoft handle Quakecon next year, an exclusive PC centered event.
If your theory about 2021 being Starfield's release is correct, that means The Elder Scrolls VI might be as soon as 2022. I would be very pleased with that. Very very pleased.
I agree that late 2021 is probable but I still wouldn't rule out 2022. BGS will want to take their time knowing their reputation is on the line more than ever.
It's still on the creation engine, it's hard to explain but look up thesues' ship and you'll get a general understanding how engine development usually works.
One thing I dont personally hear people talk about is the possibility of Bethesda actually doing remakes for their older titles now. Witch I think could happen someday with Microsoft in the picture.
Lighting is the best part about Skyrim special edition/ fo4/76. 76's volumetrics are actually very impressive and look better than most games except RDR2. I agree Raytracing would just make everything look so much better and save them development time.
@@thomaskelly2108 so the way lighting actually works in the creation engine is very old school. As "light" hits the object it actually changes the contrast, hue and brightness of the object almost like sliders in photoshop. It's very artificial and requires a lot of hand drawn shading and illusions. The volumetric lighting you see in skyrim and after is also very forced and built on illusions. With RayTracing, tones, contrast, hue will all be natural and volumetric lighting will happen naturally where it should. And examples of it not working correctly can be seen throughout fallout 76 and is very immersion breaking.
I hate exclusivity. I understand the console competition and everything but we’re all gamers. We all love the same stuff. Im hoping ps5 and 5 get access just like xbox should get access.
Have you also been fighting to get God of War on Xbox or is this your first comment talking about hating exclusivity now that Bethesda games might not be on PS5?
Would be a big power move to keep Bethesda games on the Microsoft platform. Sony for 7 years as shit on Microsoft about “exclusives”. I’d be like oh you want elder scrolls, fallout, doom, star field, and whatever else we want horizon, god of war, last of us. Microsoft has all the cards, let’s kick Sony’s teeth in.
I’m pretty pumped about Starfield and ES6. At the same time, I’m concerned for my family now that I’m in my mid 30s not my teens like when Oblivion came out and my mid 20s when Skyrim came out. I disappeared from public life for several months on both occasions and now that would not be acceptable lol
If Microsoft was going to pay 7.5 billion for Zenimax there’s no doubt they would want to see Starfield and tes 6 progress. So this bodes well for how good those games will be

They do this for every game, update the engine, call it new... but it has to be said Skyrim Special Edition engine is really nice as you can mod it, clean the update and dlcs and add USSEP and you can have a stable modded game without ctds.
It should only be fair to be exclusive for at least 6 months. Since Sony is advertising these games as exclusives (such as FFVIIR, Ghostwire Tokyo, and Deathloop), where we know they are coming to other platforms soon.
There's something to be said about old dogs and new tricks. Even if managing an engine is not the same thing, i doubt the final product will be anywhere near it's competition or that it will grow old well. *Stares at Avowed*

Phil Spencer has said before they would be very interested in bringing Gamepass to other platforms.
That’s so genius
Yip if gamepass is the only way
Exactly what I was thinking. At that point the ball is in PS court to make a decision. Times are a changing.
And to bring Spider-Man to Xbox lol
Ps5 allowing game pass would be awesome and would end the console wars
I’m hopping that obsidian and Bethesda work on some projects together now that they under Xbox like for example new Vegas 2
That could go really well or it could go really bad.
@@christyshultz6443 Bethesda usually has multiple studios working on one game lol so I can see them allowing obsidian to help work on one or lead one while they work on elder scrolls 6. But obsidian is working on avowed now.
I'm under the impression that Xbox isn't going to move Bethesda's IPs to different studios. There may be some "spin-off" type games, but the full scale Fallout games will be with Bethesda.
@@rafterman5072 Bethesda lent the fallout is to obsidian to make fallout new Vegas so it’s possible for Bethesda to lent obsidian fallout again to make a new Vegas 2
Throw in Inxel too and we could see the greatest RPG to ever exist
On xbox’a new video they actually confirmed their working on ES6 tandem with Starfield
Link please.
@Emperor Kiva I dont know how to get the link its on the UA-cam app
@@thomasrice3373 Never mind I already found it. Thanks though
@@madhouse2594 What's the name of the vid?
“Trying to record a VIDEO.” Don’t try to hide it Matty. That wasn’t a phone call...it was a pizza timer.
What caught me off gaurd was when pete hine hesistated and said well its ultimately up to phil. About what it releases on.
I was 21 when Skyrim came out. I might be 34-35 when ES6 comes out. I hate getting old.
I think Todd is excited that he's more free from the tencent influence. Yes they are still share holders, but do you think they will be able to veto Microsoft? No. That means more money, more creative freedoms. That's what Todd meant. He's more excited now
Zenimax was a private company and did not have any shareholders. They are completely free from Tencent.
"Engine Overhaul"
I can't wait to see the improvements.
I can't wait to see the new "features"....
If the overhaul is big enough it could almost be like a completely different engine. As an example unreal engine 5 is nothing like unreal engine 1 because its been overhauled over and over
The question isn't if an overhaul is a good idea
The question is how big of an overall it will be
The problem with bethesda's engines is they lack polish and have many unused and broken features, if they have been given the correct time to refine the engine, they can pull off a blockbuster RPG with the same impact morrowind had back on the OG xbox.
Hoping with Zenimax no longer in control Bethesda can find their old self without the profit minded Zenimax.
Every company will be profit minded unless they are an id lonewolf developer
@@solidstatedrive agreed, but MS seems to be interested in getting something gamers want out there even if it means delaying where Zenimax was just pushing them to release and seemed to not want to spend to update engine.
Uh Zenimax is still in control, MS bought Zenimax
@@TheNorwegian yeah, but that also means Microsoft owns Bethesda
@@cinnamon-skateboarding5987 that is my bet. starfield will be them saying here is our "creation kit 2 'it just works' edition"
@@jordanmosher9744 Really honest question, but what Microsoft online games are u talking about?
Darth Sorry I’m a little confused by the question. Specific games I’m not sure of but to my understanding it’s for most games available on either platforms store. That’s why there is a digital ps5, it’s to fully capitalize on making direct money from those games for the next 7 years.
I remember how awesome it was the first time I played Oblivion when I shot an arrow at a bucket hanging off a rope and the weight of the arrow sticking out of the side of the bucket tilted the angle the bucket was hanging. I hope to see more small upgrades that make the world feel more real and like it exists even when I'm not there.
@MrMattyPlays appreciate your news Matty!!!!
Remember when you only had 70k subs, looking good Matty you have come a long way 💪
your phone threw me off. that's what I chose to be my alarm so I hear it every morning.
If they are given the time, they should be able to pull off miracles, morrowind is a great example of this. But I feel we'll just get another FO4
I've said this in a few places now and haven't noticed anyone picking up on it yet.
Bethesda were developing cloud based gaming software tech that could be a perfect fit for XCloud which Microsoft would probably love to have exclusive access to if it's any good.
(see previous E3 presentations for details)
@ The Rusted Dybamo
Some channels spoke about it, and it is very interesting tech of which Im sure Microsoft will find good use for it. The same goes for the game engine from Arkane, and there is another studio which has their sophisticated engine, but Bethesda tech R&D department is topnotch.
Phil Spencer is like the jokester grandpa and Pete is like the dad who just knows he has to clean up Todd's mess.
Stanfield is probably going to be more Space Fallout like The Outerworlds.
The classic case of Thesus' ship, every major game developer does the same with their engines over the years.
Idk, engines are a physical thing you can touch, a lot of old code will still be there if the code isn't bad, so it'll be a new engine when ALL the code is different.
7:28 Todd Howard joked that "we are closer to showing it than we were in the beginning of this conversation."
Pete Hines' gesture, a head shake, to indicate "no" shows that the release is a long way off, possibly not before 2022.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been trying to find out what all changed from Morrowind to Oblivion and I’ll be damned if it isn’t a lot more than I realized.
Your camera needs glasses, everything is blurry.
It’s getting laser lens surgery and will be better tomorrow
Not the background though, that was in focus 😂
I like that this news has reenergized you and your channel
(Its honestly done more for gaming in general already. I'm hopeful for the first time in a long time )
Another good report. Thanks, Matty. ❤💋
Love the channel. Just a critique from a filmmakers. Auto focus is not your friend. Gotta watch out for that. My suggestion, before filming, turn in all the lights, dial focus in, then you can turn your lights back down.
What I look forward to most is the inevitable Monster Factory episode.
I'm a vindictive person so if I was in charge of exclusivity with Bethesda, I'd definitely keep it from Sony. And that's hard for me to say, considering I play Playstation.
I hope this brings the possibility of Skywind & Skyblivion on consoles free of charge! 🤞
Those are game sized mods which I believe are too large to be supported by Bethesda's console mod system.
Really hope we get to fly around to different planets in real time in Star field
As someone who used to watch UA-cam for 6 hours or more everyday and now watches less than that in a week, this is one of the only channels I still enjoy.
That and occasional tech news and Gemeranx' Friday news show.
Uncle Pete's facial expression @ 17:34
Classic 😭😭
HOPEFULLY... in starfield we will FINALLY GET that 16x the detail...
There are a couple things Gopher said on his most recent podcast that I fully agree with:
-New Vegas 2 if you had Bethesda build the world and Obsidian do the quest structure/dialogue, could be a masterpiece.
Also, mods.
Enjoy the vids, and the positive energy. You always seem so upbeat, which is great cause 2020 has kinda been a mess.
why is there an option for 1440[ 6- fps when this looks like its in 720p??? (yes i have 1440p selected)
End of 2023 earliest for TES6. That's my guess.
When ur phone rang I thought a fabled matty skit was starting lmao idk if I'm happy or sad that it didn't happen
I hear that "So Happy World" as BGM yesssss.
Been watching since before the fallout 4 speculation series... don’t plan on stopping now!
a couple of years ago he said they were not remaking the engine, so they probably didn't like what they saw and they decided to go full throttle
Killing a very specific 30 minutes reminiscing. Good memories, all.
Imagine Starfield's gunplay being like doom but it has an atmosphere like an elder scrolls lol
I agree that late 2021 is probable but I still wouldn't rule out 2022. BGS will want to take their time knowing their reputation is on the line more than ever.
it's great that it's in the new engine and not on the creation engine. They have to update the engine and starfield would be a good starting point.
It's still on the creation engine, it's hard to explain but look up thesues' ship and you'll get a general understanding how engine development usually works.
I had no idea Oblivian was procedurally generated
I think the foliage was, at least some of it
One thing I dont personally hear people talk about is the possibility of Bethesda actually doing remakes for their older titles now. Witch I think could happen someday with Microsoft in the picture.
You know I was thinking, graphically the biggest issue with the old engine was the lighting. With RayTracing I can see a remake of them looking ok.
@@maphazar7549 fair enough, thanks for the info pal.
I really think starfield is going to be an absolute banger

Finally a spacey rpg from these guys. All we need is a true medieval rpg from them. What other themes could there be?
@Nii Lantei Bright-Davies i meant without magick.
If Microsoft was going to pay 7.5 billion for Zenimax there’s no doubt they would want to see Starfield and tes 6 progress. So this bodes well for how good those games will be
"talkin bout cheese wheels..."
This made me think of the SNL skit of "The Barry Gibb talk show"
You guys can trust your ol' buddy Todd! Don't you worry we (I mean they) got you covered bros!
We (I mean Todd Howard) heard you loud and clear! You want the Creation Engine! You love the Creation Engine and seriously hate the idea of us (I mean them) spending any money on any new tech!
So for you, our fans (their fans I mean), you want it, you got it! Every game on Creation Engine!
Honestly, its cool how bethesda always talks about the ram, cpu, and gpu stuff while every other company is like GRAPHICS
but its not cool how it means jack shit since they give broken half ass garbage for the last several years. why do you praise them? they need to be put in their place for the sake of the consumer. damn kids have to ruin everything.
I am really looking forward to see more of Starfield. I love the potential that the setting can offer!
They do this for every game, update the engine, call it new... but it has to be said Skyrim Special Edition engine is really nice as you can mod it, clean the update and dlcs and add USSEP and you can have a stable modded game without ctds.
I take everything "the todd" says as blatant lies, he's proven to be habitual.
Plz do something with your camera focus, btw very good vid as always :)
I’m still in shock over this I’m so excited for the future of Bethesda games
It should only be fair to be exclusive for at least 6 months. Since Sony is advertising these games as exclusives (such as FFVIIR, Ghostwire Tokyo, and Deathloop), where we know they are coming to other platforms soon.
There's something to be said about old dogs and new tricks. Even if managing an engine is not the same thing, i doubt the final product will be anywhere near it's competition or that it will grow old well.
*Stares at Avowed*
Operation Darkness is so crazy but for some reason I love it.
Mr Matty, with that facial hair you're looking like one of the pre-generated options for faces in a RPG.
skyrim grandma is cool cant wait to see her in the game
Major Nelson AND Phil Spencer’s profile pics on Twitter are both the vault boy.. has to mean something regarding fallout
If this new engine doesn't blow away the audience, there's going to be hell to pay. That's the only talking point they have lately.
im honestly happy they are staying with the creation engine, if they changed the engine the feel of the games would be completely different
