  • In this video I make a 228-layer billet of 1084 and 15N20 random pattern damascus. I forge out a 10” chef knife from part of the billet. I ran three normalization cycles on the steel at 1650F, 1500F, and 1400F. I quenched the blade at 1475F in Parks 50 that was heated to 120F. I tempered the blade for two 2-hour cycles at 400F.
I sanded the blade up to a 600-grit finish. I etched the blade in ferric chloride for 3 cycles of 5 minutes each. In between cycles I lightly sanded off the oxides with 1200, 2000, and 2500 grit sandpaper. Next, I etched the blade for 2 hours in coffee, rinsed the blade in water, neutralized the blade in baking soda water, rinsed the blade in water, blew the blade dry with an air compressor, and let the oxides set overnight before polishing with a sunshine cloth. Lastly, I applied a food safe blade wax to protect the blade from rust during shipping.
I attached some black micarta handle scales, and finished the handle with 3 coats of Odie’s Oil finish, allowing at least 12 hours cure time between coats. I sharpened the blade on a set of diamond stones at 300, 1200, and 3000 grit. I polished the edge with a double sided leather strop loaded with 5 micron and 3.5 micron diamond paste.

Many don't know that the original Bowie knife , may have had a blade profile similar to this one , but so little is actually known about it's actual appearance , which includes the handle style !!! If the original still exist in some collection , it has gone unrecognized by both collectors & historians !!! What is known , is that Bowie knives vary widely in mass & profile !!!

That's interesting. I can see some similarities in this profile to early Bowie profiles now that you mention it. Thanks for watching!

Nice knife, and really clean work, and great detail in your description, which is always appreciated. I'm always curious about what people do to keep the coffee stain from wearing off with use.

Thanks for watching, and I appreciate the feedback. As long as you let the oxides set for several hours after etching you really shouldn't see it fade over time. Just keeping it clean, dry, and waxed can really help as well.

beautiful work, but why not etch the entire piece so the tang looks the same as the blade?

Thank you. It's just personal preference. I like the seamless feel of the handle on a full tang knife when I shape the handle after gluing up the scales. You can go through and re-etch the tang with a q-tip and some ferric chloride, but I don't like the idea of any acid being pulled into tiny crevices between the tang and scale with no way to guarantee that it's been neutralized. I'd probably recommend a hidden tang knife if a customer wanted the spine etched.
