I just received and installed my GRS spinner into my Asteroids cab. MOST AWESOME UPGRADE! THANK YOU GLEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s great to see you guys care so much about your customers! I can’t wait to get the Tempest machine, and the second you release these I’m getting one! I’ll keep my eyes peeled
A smaller diameter knob option, like an original Tempest. If your creating new options. Would be of great interest to me, and I'd think, many other hard core tempest fans
Great news Glen, my spinner came in today, May 16th. I just installed it with my 12-n-1 interface board on my Deluxe machine. WOW! The spinner works so well I now have to get used to playing my Major Havoc and Tempest with a quality spinner. I got so used to that crappy dial/spinner on my Arcade 1 Up Deluxe cabinet. Outstanding job on the spinner Glen. I beat my Tempest high score on the first time trying it. Thanks pal. I am set to go!
HI Glen, I bought the spinner from Amazon. Also bought the 8-1 QVC Asteroids partycade. The spinner only works in one direction. (Tried all the dipswitch settings, hard to change). I emailed you all this information: ====================================================== 1) The connector on the PCB is labelled trackball, I used the trackball from the HSN Centipede partycade, and it worked. 2) The new spinner is better than the dial, but not much, it is very lightweight 3) The spinner seems to be passing only x information correctly for tempest. warlords moves in steps super breakout moves in steps avalanche moves in steps - with your spinner, it moves smoothly (but only in one direction) if you can think of a fix, or patch let us know. i will buy another spinner if you can get it working, or will test one out for you. let me know, and i will work with you on it. later -1
Thanks for the video. Wasn't sure I got the right one on Amazon, til I saw this. Looking forward to installing it in my 12-in-1, in a couple of days. :)
Great job on your v1 spinner and 12 in 1 board Glen. Works great! I can't wait for an update on what you have planned for an a1up bottom panel with coin slot design. 😁
Great video! Thank you. got my spinner V2 yesterday 1-14-21. set it up, works great. Quick question. How do you play Tron with a joystick, spinner and fire button? referring to the spiders, tanks and MCP Cone levels...That has to be very difficult without the use of the flightstick. Thanks
Great news!! It is May 7th and the spinners are now in stock and available to order on Amazon. I just ordered mine a few minutes ago. Just a heads up for you guys. Get them before they run out again. Can't wait until it arrives to finally play Tempest the way it should be played.
Sorry to be a kid on Christmas Eve 😂 but how long might it take the v2 spinners to get to Amazon and into the store? I’m anxious. 🤪 Got my circuit board, need to complete the set.
Comment: I've found that with the USB board on a RPi, the dip switches should be set to 1-on, 2-off , 3-on, such that the device sends 64 half millisecond pulses per rotation. This provides enough dial sensitivity for MAME implementations of tempest, etc., without reaching saturation. If you set all switches on (1024 pulses per rotation), then fast turning of the dial (several rotations per second) causes the pulses to blur together and is too fast for typical USB polling rates (1 millisecond). This causes the action to top out in a weird nonlinear way.
Setting it up on Pi3 can be cumbersome as you need to remove the DIP Switch coating, switch DIP Switch 3 to up position for on, plug Spinner board to pin 3, and plug usb 3 on pi. You will need a tweezer and magnifying glass to see what you are doing.
Hey Glen, I'm still having some issues with using the interface board with my Raspberry Pi setup. I am using version 1.1 interface board. Would this be the latest version or is there another? Once again, thank you for your help... -Mark
Hey Glen! Any idea when the trackball will be back in stock? Just got a 12 in 1 and want to upgrade the controls. Ordered the spinner and had to grab the board because there are no trackballs anywhere!! Help us GRS, you’re our only hope!
Glenn, do you happen to know when the spinners will be back in stock I been trying to get a second one for my asteroids for like a month and it is never stocked will you be doing another run on these?
Hey Glen, I have purchased your spinner and the interface board to play MAME and to use my raspberry pi. When connected to my pc, the cursor moves on my screen either X or Y axis depending on the slot on the interface board I'm using. However, when trying to play Tempest in MAME, the spinner does not work at all. I've tried playing with the settings in MAME to no avail. Also, when plugged into my Raspberry Pi, the spinner is not recognized at all. The red power indicator lights are working on both pieces of hardware. What am I missing here? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!! Keep up the great vids and game on!!!
You have to set the jumper to pc and not arcade 1up mode..also the PI mame version..not all support a mouse. You will need to make.sure the version of mame you have in your build does
Darn, I just ordered the V1 spinner and 12-in-1 board for my Atari cabinet, and am also adding a PC/retro-pie unit so I can play mame and other emulators with the cabinet. When you have an option to order a V2 replacement, please let us know, as I wasn't aware of the 8 second lag on the V1 unit. Thanks, and keep up the great work!! PS: Where did you find the Tron ROM????!!!
For those still wondering which setting they removed for using the 1 dip switch to remove the built in delay - I just got mine and it looks like the 32 pulse setting was removed - it has settings for 16 - 64 - 512 and 1024 pulses and to clarify a bit on the 8ms - it is not actually an 8ms. delay built in - it is the length that the pulse signal stays active ( with the setting off (default shipped setting) the pulses last for 8 ms. so that the arcade 1up machine has enough time to read each individual pulse - With the dip switch turned on the pulse length is change to 0.5ms ( too fast for the A1U machine to read but a PC or the Rpi will read each pulse correctly at that length ) -- So it is not actually a delay in signalling just the length that the pulse lasts because the A1U board does not read every 0.5 ms so it needs the longer pulse signal to read how many pulses occur correctly.
hi glen. I noticed during your demo the trackball is a loud on the rollers. Will that be addressed by production time? Also can the flashing light be controlled or just always on or always off ?
I just bought a version one spinner dammit lol it’s great I see no need to upgrade to v2 but I was curious on the progress of a trackball for my centepede arcade1up cabinet any news
Great video... Thanks for posting.... I purchased the spinner but amazon no longer has the 12 in 1 Interface Board.... Do you have any suggestions how to get this spinner working with MAME ??? Thanks again...
@@GlensRetroShow OK... Thanks for the quick response Glen.... So this 12 in 1 board and spinner then should work on a MAME pc setup ??? Thanks again .... Rob
If I buy the GRS spinner and trackball as well as new HAPP buttons with zero delay encoder going to Pi/PC will I be able to skip the 12 in 1 interface board? It is "currently unavailable" on Amazon. I would think I would only need the interface board if I'm using the stock A1UP encoder and PCB.
Will this spinner be a simple plug'n'play replacement for the factory spinner on the 12-in-1 Arcade1up machine or do I have to do some configuring/programming with this new part?
Glen, what dip switch settings were you using? I'm trying to get this to work on PC, my dip switches are set to stock (all off) and the mouse moves about an inch per a half of dozen revolutions. I tried setting the dips to all on, and the mouse doesn't move at all. What am I doing wrong?
@@GlensRetroShow Thanks for the reply, I did get it working, dip 3 was not all the way on. It works like a champ now, this is a great product. Tempest on Atari Vault plays great with this spinner. Thanks again Glen.
Hi Glen love all that you are doing for us old arcade folks. I have played a mame version of tempest with a very similar spinner. I found i had a hard time when going over 200000ish with this spinner. went home and fired up my Tempest and found that once you get up there in game play with the arcade spinner i will drag my middle and pointer finger on the ledge of the spinner for added control. I am wondering if you are going to offer a knob that has the dimensions of the original. if you need dimensions i can take a set of calipers to mine. Thank you. Thomas B.
I'm confused. I thought the 8ms delay thing was in the 12in1 board? Is that wrong? Is it actually in the spinner? Is it something that has to be removed/corrected in both?
