    I've been driving for over 30 years and most weigh station stops go just like that.remember when you get in a new truck always go through your paper work and clean out all old and outdated paperwork and make sure all is current.

    Weights and permits are no joke. Lots of DOT scale locations will pull you in if your over weight for either gross or on any axle. They can be pretty picky on your permits as well. Keep in mind that depending on the size and location of your fuel tanks, your fuel load can amount to just over 2,000 pounds for 300 gallons. That weight will be split between your steer and drive axles. Most of the Volvo’s I drove were steer axle heavy, and roughly% 30 to 40% of the fuel weight went on the steers depending on wheel base and tank placement. There were a number of times where I had to move my 5th wheel forward or back or restrict my fuel load to stay under gross or axle weight. There were a couple of times I had to not only adjust the 5th wheel, but also slide the tandems to balance out the load so I could squeeze over the scales. Also it was not uncommon to calculate fuel burn in order to insure I was legal weight by the time I reached a scale. There was one time where I was stopped on the scale and moved back and forth several times and paused for a short period of tine until the fuel stopped sloshing around and the scales stabilized. My total weight turned out to be exactly 80,000 lbs, 12,060 on the steers, 34,040 drives and 33,900 on the drives. He let me continue after he thought about it for a while. But he pulled in the truck in front of me because he was 34,800 on his drives after rolling him back and forth.

    Just a helpful suggestion. When you get on a steep grade again go into manual 8 th gear maybe and your jake will hold you and you won’t heat up your brakes. If you want to stay in automatic, if the speed limit is 45 set your cruise for 35. The jake will come in about 5 mph over your cruise setting then come in stages to the max setting.

      @@machintrucGaming It's the best (along with Scania) and the largest truck manufacturer in the world... They own Renault Trucks, Mack, UD Trucks, Dongfeng CV and VECV Eicher. They are known for having the best transmissions (at least here in Europe on the flat nose trucks) and they also produce the strongest (measured in effect and torque) truck engines for commercial use. It's a 16.1L I6 that is programmed at 750hp and 3550Nm of torque. However they are testing 850+hp with the same engine. Scania is not far behind with their 16.4L V8 engines that produce 730hp and 3500Nm of torque. I got pulled into that station with a truck that wasn't in tip top shape. I pulled in and the officer that came out to the truck looked at my truck, shook his head and said.."We're just going to do a paper inspection on you today." I laughed with him, grabbed my paperwork and followed him into the room to the right of the bathroom... As we were talking, I mentioned something about playing music while making small talk. He got up went to the back, got his phone, and showed me a vid of him singing karaoke. It wasn't great but I wasn't about to tell the guy that just avoided giving me a ticket that he sucked.... Good people down there. Be safe driver and always arrive before your trailer!

    Best tip I can add for the overweight after fueling this is what I do is I ALWAYS fill up full right before getting loaded and then scale up with full tanks and then I know the GVW and axle weights include full fuel tanks (have the load readjusted or move axles if needed once scaling up). Then you never have to worry about potentially being overweight after filling up with that same load along your journey because you were loaded and scaled with full tanks from the get go. Was a tip my instructor gave me while I was in school, to never get loaded without full tanks. I have taken his advice to heart. Keep doing you and keep movin up and keep on trucking! Absolutely lovin your videos man! :) Drive safe and keep the shiny side up! Best regards from a new driver in Ontario, Canada!

    • @Kevinsmith-rx7zq
      @Kevinsmith-rx7zq 2 роки тому

      Actually, it depends on the load.
      Some places want to top you off with freight but they weigh you after loading. In this case, yes. Fill up first.
      In others, they tell you up front the weight and if it makes you that close, don't fill up first. I'll go in half tank, weigh out and then decide on more fuel or not.
      Fuel is 7.1 lbs per gallon.

I went out to my truck unplugged the qual-comm and took it back inside.. He was like what's this? My log book!. The whole time his trainer is standing there laughing his ass off. I was not impressed! You have lots of tears ahead. Truck driving is as close to a sweatshop as you can get. You have your CDL, and that is just a start. Just wait to see what is in store for you. Full disclosure: I have a million miles under my belt, and the scenery is the best part. Most of the rest (weigh stations, cops, border crossings, rude dispatchers, homesickness, breakdowns (unpaid,) horrible truck stops, beggars, lot lizards, difficult loading docks, inclement weather, waiting for a load at your expense and on and on) is a pain. I wish you all the best. Note: I am sure my reply will be deleted, but I hope a few get to read it.

    Another interesting video thanks Rusty. As others have said driving bobtail can be dicey. Not 100% sure if Yank rig brakes are set up the same as the Aussie tractors but the drive bogie gets the full 8bar of pressure all the time. This makes it so easy to lock the rear wheels when it's wet if you need to stop in a hurry. Over here in Europe the drive brakes have load sensing so they get pressure according to the weight on the axle. The front axle always has 8bar. I nearly spun a big new Kenworth once on test drive in the wet because I did not know this!
    Enjoy being back home, we'll look forward to your next video! Deuces Rusty ✌️

    At 7:43-7:47 that cliff escarpment is Apache Leap in Superior, Az. This is where Geronimo (Apache leader) surrendered to the US Calvary. That is why people yell "Geronimo" before jumping out of a plane, because many of the Apache's leapt to their death, instead of surrendering. A guy that I know, that grew up there told me the history. The Clint Eastwood movie "The Gauntlet" was filmed there (the bus scene where the pig iron is being welded). This same person told me that he was a welder for the mine, so he was the actual welder for that scene. The 1999 movie "U Turns" was filmed in Superior, as well. First time viewer, thanks!

    My tip: I’m from Santa Clara County, having been born in San Jose and residing in San Martin close to where I can see the signs along Highway 101 (you did pass San Martin Avenue exit on highway 101). Whenever you’re in Santa Clara County, please be aware that local traffic is OK on many of the exits (no thru-traffic over 7 tons allowed at Masten or San Martin exits) between Gilroy and Morgan Hill, unless there is a major accident that forces trucks to detour to nearby Monterey Road. Also, the highest speed limit on county-maintained roads is 50 MPH, and the only non-state maintained 55 MPH in Santa Clara County is on Monterey Road between Tilton Avenue in Morgan Hill and just south of Blossom Hill Road in San Jose (maintained by the city of San Jose). In addition, the city of Morgan Hill has a designated route for trucks per their city code (see their website and/or make inquiries). Gilroy (southbound) and San Martin (northbound) are the only designated truck scale stops in Santa Clara County maintained by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Who knows when I may encounter you in person one day to simply say “thanks for the video”! (San Martin is correctly pronounced as “SAN MAR-TEEN”, not as in “Ricky Martin”, as the town is mispronounced by visitors; it’s a Spanish pronunciation.)

    I ran 11 and 13 axle oversize for several years before I retired. [ the rig was 137 feet long, ten foot wide trailer with a 100 ton deck, and, depending on what state, could gross around 260,000 to 280,000) On the East Coast, they often wave you through because stopping a 50 wheeler can shut down a small scale. If you have your paperwork together they are usually are reasonably cool. On the other hand, there are some bad scales, I would cite Brownsville, Missouri at about the 44 mile marker, Truckee, California [both have been shut down before for profiteering with fake infractions.] I should also mention Dunsmiur, California where an inspector checked the air pressure in each of my 50 tires and valve covers.The scale at the top of the mountain (Castiac) going North out of LA on I-5 could also be pissy and, of course the scale at Banning has produced some horror stories. Keep on trucking, driver, and best of luck.
