  • I was absolutely addicted to MapleStory back in its hay day, unfortunately after checking back on the game, it definitely doesn't carry the same weight it used to.

Totally agree, this game was my childhood basically and interacting with people and grinding levels for days was just the best.. I remember joining Maplestory maybe around before dual bladers roughly came out as I cant remember as well. Still haven't played it in like a year but its probably the same today like you said with the emptiness and just not seeing many people to interact with, it just isnt the same. That was one of the reasons why I quit a while ago, new updates are cool but its not as fun and personally a bit too many classes (which isnt a bad thing). I liked playing new characters but I was the type to get them high level even though they weren't really high lol but you get the point. A bit too many classes came out it was pointless to continue on. I dont even remember half the classes now that came out except like the main heroes or whatever they are called its been too long. My main was like a Dark Knight which no one would pick now but idk you never know. The new classes are unique but too easy to level up. Best memories personally were PQ's, music to remember forever, and the great people I met!

I remember when the Dual Bladers came, us Bandit mains had a rivalry with them as they shared a pretty similar skill set :) But yeah, I agree with you, the overloading of content, while it was good one the one hand, the massive expansion really emptied the servers, hollowing the world as whole.

I had the same experience as you Man! I remember staying up really late training and playing with friends that I became really close with. It was a huge part of my life. It stopped being fun when it became so easy to level up and the party quests essentially was wiped out. I agree with you with the wasteland comments.

I've been playing since beta and am still playing now. The game hasn't changed focus that much, its dwindling population isn't the cause, it's the effect. The lack of interactive elements isn't something that was changed by choice, it was changed because the population is less so to keep the game playable they needed more solo elements rather than requiring a party for everything. The cause is most likely rooted into the fact that less people have less time to play these types of games, and this video completely misses that.

I still remember the times where I’d party up with my maple buddies and slack at henesys, travel around, visit new places like aquaroad, el nath, oh and spamming health potions and praying not to die just to get to Showa town to get a bathrobe! Maple nowadays is just, different. Feels more like a single player game. I miss those days :’(

Took me years to reach level 30 too, started playing maple again yesterday evening and took me literally 2 hours. Monsters arent a thread anymore! I remember not being able to walk from Kerning City to Sleepywoods because of the Ligators that were way to strong for me. I remember to take on 1 enemy at a time when grinding. I'd honestly agree with them, the game in general is less social now even if I initiate convo people, it isn't as easy to find friendly people nowadays. The old servers are now full of elitist veteran pricks (which is hard to say, being the veteran that I am) that really don't care about anyone outside their small circles. I made tons of friends and lost them then made friends again and lost them all throughout middle school and highschool. Eventually most of us lost contact because we all got too busy with our lives during and after high school. I quit because I wasn't willing to start over even after Reboot came after all the work I made for years. I lost too many friends but made great memories, my old guild that went strong for about 5-7 years before it broke apart, not as much free time as before with a job and studies, the old servers became too p2w, and i eventually lost interest. I've been making my move towards MS2 though now that it's and while it is nowhere the same game as MS1, just in title, I just hope to be part of a community once more.

@@Aeixxis even playing on reboot it is heavily different from original maplestory I have went back multiple times and its not anywhere near as social. I had friends on maplestory that i was closer with than my actual family now to get a convo longer than a minute is a stretch. To say maplestory hasn't changed in terms of raw numbers and popularity would be a huge mistake as well considering they have been bleeding players for awhile. And dont even get me started on when they went full pay to win with the cubes and shit. Also im probably one of the few people who actually cares about this but when they said hey we are making those levels you spent years grinding into easily gotten in one day I personally was pissed. It was a huge middle finger to the community tbh.

as an OG mapler, i actually still like the current maplestory. imo it has a different charm than before, and i like the old and new for different reasons. however, i do agree about the social aspect. i get so sad and nostalgic thinking about all the friends i made back in the day, and it was inevitable because teamwork was needed for old maplestory. but now, everyone just kinda goes solo and does their own thing. :( also the empty free market is so saddening to see everytime i go there.

      He's not even an American.

His real name is indeed Gavin.
He's not 4 people, not a 50 year old Asian.
He's an English bloke in his late 20s. Just an ordinary man with an impressionable tolerance for time.
The little conversation I had with him. His character was deleted by his then girlfriend (kittyz0r) and he could not dream of starting over again and completely cut off MapleStory. He's not played since 2008.

Another big thing is that you level so fast u cant enjoy the armor you would get every 10 levels lvl 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 etc armor. That made the game fun. Work for things vs. just getting the lvls so fast u dont enjoy anything.

I can cope with the reformed MapleStory now a days however I mostly stick within the private server side. Here's a list of all the things I loved about the old MS (I played the Europe version).
    - Kerning PQ (Probably the most nostalgic one on this list)
    - Ludi PQ (Nothing but good memories from this)
    - Boat to Orbis/Ludi/Ellinia (Those damn crogs! I also made a lot of friends here, station was always packed with people)
    - Henesys PQ (I always had a knack for PQ's due to the social aspect and teamwork)
    - Monster Carnival 1/2 (Probably the best idea for a PQ ever, lobby was always full and had to cc to stop the hardcore lag)
    - La Tomatina/German Festival/Guy Fawkes event (Loved these events as a kid)
    - Ghost Ship Sea of Fog PQ (Probably not as nostalgic as the others on the list however it was very engaging and fun)
There's probably more but the list would be very long.

While old school maplestory is nice, the Only thing it had going was the players interacting with one another. Slow grinding and such can only take a game so far, especially for one like Maplestory. Imo, new maplestory is better, though handled by nexon it is still fun to play and the little quests and events they have now are much better. However since the community is smaller than before, the most populated server is Reboot, channels normally have good amount of players but since maple is so huge with unnecessary maps, finding them can be tough. All you have to do is enjoy the game and make friends when they come. :p

Pre-pirate update, Maplestory was one of the best MMOs to have existed (even comparing it to the modern MMOs of today).
Not that the idea of the pirate class was bad, per se. It just heralded in the changes that utterly destroyed all value the franchise held.
That said, the pirate class kinda detracted from both the thief and bowman classes, as it more-or-less did the jobs of both with no downsides, so it harmed the delicate balance between the original 4 classes that the game was balanced around.
If Nexon had simply released the pirate update and everything that followed as a separate game or mode of Maplestory (essentially, if they had duplicated their software, updated that, and left a mirror of how the game was in the old days, only adding new NX items to the "classic" version) then Nexon would have quickly realized that the game everyone loved and gladly funneled copious amounts of money into wasn't the game they were making, but the game they already had made.
Moral of the story: They ruined perfection.

I like maple story now as well, high damage numbers, way easier leveling, good revamps, more classes, link skills, tons of events, not pay to win. I agree that Nexon should make a old school maplestory server where everyone could remake their favorite old characters with the benefits of some player agreed updates, like how runescape did it.

The only mistake maple made imo is that they made more servers instead of improving the old ones. The only one that I think was necessary was reboot, the rest are the same, but the fanbase is divided over them. This is the only thing that made the game worse. I still play on reboot with a new acc, but I only started it recently. So far I've only added 1 buddy, that was during the fairy quest line, where you find the missing kids. I think the game would be better if they removed some servers, and let active people copy the characters on those servers to any other server of their choosing. Except reboot, as that's it's own different game imo. That would be the first step to making it better.

In the past decade, I have jumped to many MMOs, but one that stands out is Trove whom I believe is the king of shooting itself on the foot.
An MMO thrives on moments of pause, where people come together and form bonds, guilds, families, hunting zones, but most importantly *spread stories like campfires of all their adventures*
If the MMO changes too much, those stories of how you hit for 10k on a creature is no longer worth telling. Many adventures become dull because of the game stirring too fast.
You no longer have time to settle down, only go on the race like everyone else until you get tired of it. You'll notice the new era after Big Bang nobody really has stories because... nothing ever stood still to matter for very long.

Big bang happened. Everyone too focus on dmg instead of getting the right role.
Leveling became too easy and people chose tk level instead of sitting down, taking a break from grind and talking to new ppl.
We used to enjoy every small bits of things like exploring etc..

I totally agree. I grew up playing this until I officially quit in 2013 then made a few appearances in 2015. But I quit after 1 month of playing. It just felt lonely and quite boring. Of course I had my fair share of stupidity growing up and getting hacked or accidentally giving our info which resulted in losing $100+ in NX equipment. But around 2005-2010 felt like a golden age. Fast forward to 2017, Worlds are dying and Broa one of the original servers since 2005 has officially died. As a result everyone either quit or Moved servers

Ya the thing about maplestory is that they have to much server and to much channels. Their is still quite a lot of people playing it but they are all spread out into many server and channels. Every time maplestory ask for a suggestion, I always put merge the servers. right now their is currently 3 severs that everyone is in. No matter their you go you will see someone. Those would me Scania, Bera, and Reboot. The moment maplestory suggest player transfer server everyone when to Bera since no one was allow in Windia or Scania. Even through windia is also down for the count. They also have a problem with party play honestly i dont get why they got rid of party play or map that allow player to join force to gind in them like lion heart castle or Knights. I know that people stay their that because those were some of the best spots. I still play the game in reboot, and you hop on the train since windia was down to hardly any players.

I honestly don't miss playing Maplestory, it just wasn't my thing. It was a game that while yes, it has a community, but if it had these changes intergrated during that 2003 to 2007 period, I would've been playing Alot more!
The game was a hard sell for me as my first MMO that my brother wanted me to join in. It was a complete nightmare for me as the slow as Balls Gameplay and adjustment of Stats just simply did not gel with how I liked my games, I was already into Yugioh, and lived to get into Fighting games as I loved that fast-paced action. And while I love playing Rpgs, an MMO (especially with the slow rate of growth as Maplestory) only made me quit, just as I was getting to Level 30 with the Warrior Class.

I used to play maplestory a lot before, back when I would get on my computer and play this game, until I decide to quit this game due to how I never like how bad the updates.
Were! ever since they decide to nerf some of the best training spots due to hackers and kil stealer and oh boy! I always will remember how much of a pain they sure were!
Back when I was having a hard time trying to find a channel that didn't have no one playing! since I remember all of the channels would have a player in that same spot.
And would play on it but even when there wasn't a player in that same training, I got lucky but of course! some no for good all kill stealer joins just to steal that spot from me
Causing me having to waste time in order to get to a new empty channel! which it is even worst for me even with 2x exp also! which gets so annoying having to find a new channel.
For an empty training spot! but even I can agree how grindy the game sure was! which it can get so boring having to experience that slow and boring grind which will cause you to
Paid money to skip that slow and boring grind! well even though I didn't want to pay to for faster grind even when I'm one of those people that would get out of the house though.
Just so I can be outside! but of course! I remember how I came back to this game I believe in 2019 and I sure was shocked to see how dead the game looks! from seeing how not
Many people play this game anymore! which I remember years ago when I was still playing this game, I remember how so many people would still play this game! like damn I have
Been gone from this game for so many years! and came back this game just to see how empty the game is now! but at least I would remember my memories I have with this game
Back when I used to play this mmorpg game a lot even though I don't play mmorpg games anymore since I do see the mmorpg genre is just dying.

can we stop exaggerating about the leveling speed. It only took weeks to level to 30 (which i know you mentioned the casual aspect) if you played casually, if you played the grind game like we do now, 30 could easily be achieved within a matter of days.

    • @MacSplicer
      @MacSplicer  6 років тому +20

I don't think I was exaggerating, at a casual pace of play (2-4 hours per day) it took my friends and I about two months to reach 30. But yeah, if all you do is train during those 2 to 4 hours, it'll probably take less time. But again, that isn't not the point I wanted to make. I was talking about how the rapid in-game progression took away the fun aspects of the casual MS scene.

    • @1DeeThunder
      @1DeeThunder 6 років тому +5

Even if you didn’t try to die as much, I don’t think you understand how difficult it truly was. There was no 2X you could buy, the equipment was trash and the exp rate was poor. Plus, it would take months because majority of players were between 10years of age to 16 at most juggling school, and games, and work. Nowadays it takes 30mins to and hour. If you were to even get to 30 within a week, you were considered godly. The most advanced equipment was working gloves and sauna robes and maybe ski’s at that time
