Revisiting DanTDM's Lab - A Decade Later

- Are you nostalgic for DanTDM's mod reviews, or mod adventures, or just Grim and Dr Trayaurus. In this video I revisit and create a deep dive on DanTDM's lab from a decade ago. In this funny but also challenging and even scary Minecraft video we'll be exploring the forgotten lab of DantDM.

DanTDM’s lab I feel like in my mind, is about on the level of iconography of a building as something like Spongebob’s or Squidward’s house. They are simple, very rough, but have a cartoonish charm to them that allows for a sandbox of chaos in each time its featured
Exactly! It's so vividly iconic.
Once as a kid, I lost my way in a minecraft world. I couldn't find where my house and expansive property had been. This had happened once or twice before and I was very upset. I had made many builds and created many friends there from mobs. An island, a wolf adoption sanctuary based on Stacy's from One Life, a checkered house, a playground, a long railway all the way to a nearby village...I had a villager I called my mom, a little guy with a pumpkin head I called my daughter, just pretend games and stuff. I was overjoyed when I eventually found my main area again! However, I was shocked and upset when I looked at my builds and realized, after such a long while of being away, eyes reset from all that time, that my builds were ugly. None of them were as good as I remembered. I didn't play much after that, but I'll always be grateful for the good memories I had building and pretending and expanding my large estate. Even if the builds weren't actually that good, heh heh...
yeah, right?
i did manage to worldedit all of my worlds together, and there was one particular base from 7+ years - castle what i covered with a mountain. it is a complete mess. mob spawners, not ended lines of defense, crammed to the outer dirt wall village, endless random stairs. at the time it looked great. but also, there was the top of the original mountain with the rare broken 1.12 villagers, nice cozy houses(because previously they all was living in a dirt barracks and i felt guilty), huge 4x4 taiga trees alley and a glass/smoothstone wall. there was my past. the base itself was recreation of the long lost mountain base that i even struggle to remember now, the terrain - so plain and barren - was the place from which you can see the size of the build. nowadays we have an amazing pre-generated mountains, caves and hills, which are making your impact on the world is so insignificant in comparison.
i kept it. i barely remember how to get there, but it is there somewhere. it is with me.
keep your memories, my random internet friend. say hi to the wolves for me, haha.
I'm happy to see people not trying to yell or hit each other for once.
old bad builds have a charm to them. Non of your old builds will look good, when new building techniques come, the 1.14 texture update, new blocks, alot of old builds will stop looking good, take dan's old lab, the fround area is a mess, iron isnt a grate building material, the testig chamber had the old glass texture which sucked, and over all, isnt that good, but we love it because it's charmingly bad. It's like a pug, it's an ugly creature, but it's so ugly that it gives it it's own charm. another example is the old villages, they are bad, but scince they are so bad they become fun to walk through, they are charmingly bad, that or bad builds give a nostalgic feel.
I used to have so much patience for large and unneccessary builds and playing in flats worlds and such, playing in creative. I remember an absolutely massive jungle wood box treehouse on jungle trees me and my brother made that had like 4 floorswith hallways wrapping all the way around and inner rooms, rails that went everywhere and into a nearby desert village, and had paintings, secret rooms, piston doors and escape railways, etc. Now I have no patience to build anything, creative or survival, with people or alone. Shitty designing and worse redstone, but I still miss it.
@@irelandchamongus737 exactly, good always bring good
My first memories of Minecraft were watching DanTDM videos and, not realizing they were modded even though they obviously were (I was young!) trying to go recreate whatever he had done on my laggy Minecraft pocket edition. I miss that.
true, true. you did not experience the Minecraft in full if you never tried to do the Aether/Twilight Forest portal, haha =)
I did the exact same thing
Man same. I miss those days so much.
DanTDM’s old lab will always hold a special place in my heart and mind
Agree
The original lab felt like part of the channels identity, and when I learned that it was getting replaced, I was just overcome with despair and couldn't bring myself to watch anymore.
Same, when I revisited his channel I just left since the old lab is gone
@@twinzzlerswell the old lab is abandoned
I never saw dntm as a kid I was mainly stampy, ibxtoycat, Jack Frost miner and many others but i watched him a little recently from like a decade ago and i could tell it was special for many kids
i watched all lol
I thought everyone's forgotten about Jack frost miner
@@gurin3702 many have not forgotten he inspired me with his buildings and he sounded very genuine and cheerful I remember coming home every day and watching his new episode watching him again gives me nostalgia
It really was a magical time... I really loved the roleplay, and now after having dabbled in it myself (mainly in scripting because I guess I was lonely or some mad scientist character as a teen that I basically wanted to recreate a person thru scripting somehow) I can see how the CustomNPC stuff he used in setting up things worked and I just appreciate him more man, AND he didn't end up in some controversy or like doing something so stupid everyone hates him now.
I think I stopped watching DanTDM around the time that the secret treasure room area became a thing because that was around the point that mod showcases interested me less but the lab itself is still incredibly nostalgic to me. I think I'll forever have its layout memorized in my head, as well as that pesky button to the entrance they would always joke about Dr needing to replace it with a pressure plate.
i still watch his cafe management video every once in a while, his stuff in genuinely timeless
I can tell the camera man had a lot of fun with these shots
It feels like so long ago, watching a DanTDM videos after school, or with a friend. I am 21 now, turning 22 in a couple months. I cannot believe it's been 10 years already since I was watching Dan. Thank you for this video. It brought a lot of nostalgia back. I am definitely rewatching some mod showcases :)
They already discovered the seed to his world, 5021019576385777538 on java release 1.6.1, so why do people keep on checking out his lab in the incorrect world?
Wait fr??
It's wild to me that I was like 6 years old when I watched Dan's videos. The world has changed so much since then, it's wild. The old lab and its treasure room, the new lab and the short time-frame it was used in, everything from that era was awesome, and even though I miss it, I'm glad that he's moved on to new and different content since then.
I still remember the video I first watched of him, I don't remember the name but at the beginning before he played his intro I remember "Don't squish me, don't squish me. Aww he squished me." He had said it in such a goofy voice it made me laugh and make me watch more videos of his
I really do miss his modded adventure most, I understand that it takes a lot of effort to create but that was one of the best era of modded minecraft that I love
A very nice video but that constant camera movement, specially tilting from side to side it just make things feel so dizzy
Wanted to comment about it, also it feels like the camera shots were filmed before the script(don't fill there purpose). But the script is pretty good.
was going to say this too. at least slow it down a bit😵💫
Yeah, they need to chill with the movement. The camera is allowed to stop and let the scene speak for itself. Theres a reason people turn off the run bob ingame
my first memory of watching youtube at least the earliest one is watching a dantdm video i had long forgotten. from what i remember is that he is my first ever window to game i had never played at the time and never heard of. he watched his videosso young when i first heard of minecraft i was so intrigued by this game that i binged him nonstop for the entire day. i used to believe all of his mod showcases are just mods, not what vanilla could do. i loved and still do watching his videos, even if he uploads once a month, a year i will still go back to watch his videos.
I grew up on Dantdm,I was a super fan until around 2019ish I wanna say, everything you said in this video sums up everything perfectly. Nothing beat binging Dan videos on the weekends and on breaks,Dan was one of those UA-camrs who stood out from the rest,he felt like an actual close personal friend if that makes sense.
I don't think you can call the original lab "forgotten" since there's dozens of parodies of Dan & Trayaurus committing various crimes in that lab
“dr trayaurus! stop burning down the pride flag!”
"DR. TRAYAURUS! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
Oh man! I remember trying to recreate both Dan's Lab and Stampy's bedroom in every old creative world I had. Good times...
Does anyone know if Dan has stopped doing UA-cam completely or just taking a break. He hasn't uploaded in a while.
Probably taking a break he's a dad now so he's quite busy these days @@johnnieedwards3171
@@johnnieedwards3171 I think he posts but not that much anymore. He has two kids so I think he's focusing on his life more than UA-cam now.
@@krispyiii6786 Understood. I was just unsure if he completely stopped or not. It's still crazy how much has changed. I'm so proud of him and what he has accomplished.
Dan's old lab, Pat's arena, and stampy's lovely world has aged quite a bit
Beside the odd long pauses and live redoing of lines without editing, this was a nice video to look back on DanTDM with
The new lab is very underrated. We just like the old one because we all have good memories of it.
the nostalgia is real argh
its been 8 years since i started watching dan but wow it feels like so much less than that!! awesome video!!!
this video is so really made me feel so nostalgic like i used to secretly watch danTDM behind my parents back as it was so cool it really made me love Minecraft
also you deserve more subscribersas this video layout and presentation is absolutely amazing
I miss the old days
Same
Really cool video! I can tell a lot of effort was put on the camera angles, but the camera twisting continually for a long time does induce motion sickness pretty easily...
That comment on how someone who watched Dan back then would be 18 now really made me realize how long ago that was. Since I am that child, and soon I'll be turning 19, it's crazy how time flies.
Another story I have related to DanTDM is that I was such a big fan that I ended up making a world just to rebuild his lab. I spent a good few minutes just trying to find a similar spot in the desert. The build was even more janky then the original but that's to be expected seeing as I was around 10 years old. I also added Grim and Dr Trayaurus although I'm pretty sure I spelled his name wrong on the nametag.
Either way I still have a lot of great memories from old MC and DanTDM. And although Dan wasn't the one who got me into Minecraft he did get me into mods. (Although it would take a long time before I'd actually figure out how modded MC works)
the references that you put in the script are amazing
One of my favorite lines is “It may look horrendous but it was memorable”
This one hit hard man i watched these when i was getting into gaming and a year or so later every world i built had a lab of my own of some sort or another always inspired by the OG DanTDM Lab
I loved watching Dan's old Minecraft videos as a kid. They will always make my first experience in watching UA-cam videos the best
I'm 22- 23 by the end of this year. I remember vividly those days when I would come home from school, and my first instinct was to hop on my dad's PC (and eventually my own), load up Internet Explorer, and check out what new adventures Dan and Dr. Trayaurus would get up to. They were a wonderful reprieve from the tedium that came with homework and overdue assignments.
I've... frankly, never really been one to let myself be driven by nostalgia, but- just this once? I think I can leave that aside and just... remember, you know? Remember the fun of it all- the poor writing that always made us laugh, the wacky hijinks we'd get to witness first-hand. The ups and downs, highs and lows. Oftentimes it really felt like I was part of the adventure.
The Lab and the many memories it holds, while diluted and a little worn around the edges by time, will always have a special place in my heart- right alongside Rendog's at this point utterly ancient original Survival series. Details may grow fuzzy over time, and things my fray a little around the seams, but... I doubt I'll ever forget.
Was the new lab ever actually used? I haven't watched DanTDM in years, but I remember that it being introduced also coincided with him switching to playing mini-games instead of mod reviews.
don't think he ever did..
I love this Lost period of my life, old music with Dan's lab map make me feel bitter-sweet.
I remember when villagers have plain coloured clothes
memories bro
10/10 video, i LOVE dantdm (and popularmmos) they were some of the best youtubers i knew at the time. I LOVED watching both of their videos when i was little.
I believe I watched more PopularMMOs then DanTDM so I also love his content too.
Originally I was going to release a popularmmos video after the DanTDM one but the script got wayyyy too long (1.5 hours long...)
I think my biggest problem with the new lab was how it didn’t feel like something the average Minecraft player could build (yes I know iron blocks in survival are expensive but scale wise still reasonable). The new lab is too big, and far more complex than the old one. Granted it looks GREAT, but the old one felt more Minecrafty in a sense
I think it could've been super memorable if he used it more, and yeah, his old lab is the pinnacle of the "Minecraft Look"
@@Critea definitely. Though with more blocks and more experienced builders the “Minecraft look” has certainly changed
i think where the new lab went wrong was by being way to big and detailed
and very generic feeling
i think instead of getting a fully new lab
dan should have gotten a redesigned version that resembled the original lab
that would've been really cool to say. I don';t know, maybe he'll do it for a special occasion one day? Maybe its wishful thinking though lol.
Oh man! This video hit me like a train, a nostalgia train carrying a decade of Minecraft memories
The algorithm gods have blessed me with another great video
this video inspired me to go back to the old minecraft days and relive them myself.
Good video, but that camera work boutta make me nauseous.
The fact i remember the layout of dantdms labs after a decade goes to show how much dan tdm has made our childhood
I feel like Dantdm’s lab is more iconic than Mario to me.
you deserve so many more subscribers oh my god
I still remember watching the reveal of the new lab with a then friend of mine when it was still brand new. He was actually crying for the departure of the old one.
I didn't even know there was a treasure room 'till now
after watching this
i want to rewatch the custom mod adventure again
DanTDM’s old lab was my childhood, him, Stampy, and Squid was my childhood
For having so little subscribers This video is amazing.
I remember recreating this build block by block from memory alone when I was a lil one.
I just remember he kept getting stuck on that one button door
Come to think of it, this's the first time that of instead of "son in mom's basement" trope it's the mom in the sons basement funnily enough
Stsmpy's loveely world, Dantdm lab, SSundee lucky block series and also PopularMMOs's arena were my chidhood and I want to thank all of them for making my childhood, even if PopularMMOs din't end his career well. I was so very grateful to come back home and watch them, because for me it was entertaining and I loved those days. I hope everyone also enjoyed those days and are living a good life.
I’d love to see a mod that adds this lab as a in-game structure. Would make so many players nolstalgic stumbling across this in a modpack.
Man...the use of The Fire Is Gone in the video is hitting hard
i remember trying to build dan's lab several times , only for it to look even more crooked , but i was so proud with myself
I still remember watching his videos, like…. Man, what a legend
Back then when I was a kid I made an exact replica of the classic lab. I used only his videos as reference and followed it perfectly. Good times.
the old lab.. so good.. so many memories... a simpler time..
I remember as a kid I spent a whole night trying to recreate the lab in my own world, the nostalgia was so strong
I absolutely loved his diamond dimensions series
It’s so weird how long it’s been
okay I love dan and this video was honestly really nice.
Complete side note, the minecraft music to me just hurts to listen to. Don't know why but its mind numbing. Like it kills my mood to play the game xD Just wanted to add that here xD Awesome video!
After 80 years of no uploads, my favourite UA-camr returns
Same with Stampy
2:43 can you spot the legs
Hint: it’s behind a triangle window that’s upside down… and you have too zoom…
The thing about the design was how simple it was and the memories with it
I was three at the time his videos were popular (2013), and I watched him constantly. I never thought at a mere 13 years old (almost 14), that I would feel nostalgic for such a time, but I do.
Nostalgia is beautiful yet also painful
Im glad you made this video and im gonna leave a like but if a finish this ima fckn cry 😭
Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy you were there to experience it
I sometimes wonder how Dan stayed friends with Trayaurus after every experiment that had gone wrong, and his subsequent punishments. Don't get it twisted, he's a brilliant mind and has made amazing inventions that have pushed Dan through the times for the better.
But for Christ's sake, he had an experiment go so horribly wrong that he was sent to an island prison-no doubt an Alcatraz reference. But I suppose such friendships are meant to last, no matter the consequences
Hey this is a really nice video. I will say though you got real trigger happy with replay mod that is a lotta swooping lol.
My favourite Minecraft series ever. No one ever topped Dan in terms of Minecraft content for me.
Actually you miss being happy and you miss not knowing what to do and then discovering the next step in your Minecraft evolution
Dude, I feel every bit of this. I used to watch Dan when I was like a teen and all of this just makes me miss one of the things that I grew up with for Minecraft and that is the tutorial world on the Xbox. I never missed a building more Than tutorial world 😭😭😭😭😭
Just realized I miss watching the old Dan TDM on the outdated version of UA-cam on my Wii.
Someone should make an overgrown version of DanTDM old lab.
very good vidio
but why dident you biuld the lab in the actual world?
like we know what world/seed the original world was made in so why not have the lab there and it will be EXSACTLY the same as all the biomes are corect
My main 3 creators I watched when I was younger were Dan, Stamps and iBallisticSquid. I miss those days. I wish those days would come back.
5:00 Random ultrakill music just starting. Perfect
nestolgia just kicked in
Might make a DanTDM Lab inspired base one day…
It's crazy to me that he's lab was just a quick build he made for 1 video and now it's more iconic than some historical figures
Why did you use the modern texture pack for the video?
I feel like at this point we can safely say that Dan stands among monoliths like Mr Rogers, Bob Ross, Steve Irwin and Robin Williams, icons that spread joy and positivity in many, people who's only goal was to entertain, educate and if possible, put a smile on your face, and that they did in their own unique way, Dan is the internet's ambassador for his seat of Horsemen of joy, alongside Bob Ross who governs Art, Mr Rogers who governs imagination, Steve Irwin for Nature and Robin Williams for joy, they all do things in their own unique way but have the same effects on many
The nostalgia is real
legendary history
I never forgot that lab
I remember seeing him make a portal to a candy world where he made the ultimate candy recipe
" ...So we back in the mine ... "
Hiraeth. It’s a great word, an emotion, the sense of longing for a home that doesn’t exist, or a home you know you can’t go back to.
This reminds me of Popular MMO’s and Jen. . .
I miss them and sad I’ll never see them again 😢
I watched the Dantdm channel when I called Minecraft legos for some reason
I spent so much time watching his videos
I remember the very first youtube video i ever watched was dan being a firefighter. Good times, good times...
I remember knowing how to build dantdm’s minecraft head perfectly
i remember when i was a kid i rebuilt all of DanTDM's treasure room until the very last (the pug video) if i remember correctly that was the very last video that was put on he's treasure room and i remember i use to rewatch all of he's video just to build that certain treasure but now that world was gonee i was just a kid and don't really know how to save it sadly i cant go back to that time and explore that world again
The villager has been waiting for a long time, he misses dan (probably)
