I'm sitting in the first row right behind Doc Schwartz wearing black rim glasses. My friend Jerry is sitting to my right wearing a dark blue shirt. We used to have reserved first row seats at the Olympic from 1966 thru 1970.
I remember watching wrestling from the Olympic in the 1970s on a uhf channel with rabbit ears tv in the Bronx. It didn't matter to me that it was in Spanish and I didn't understand a word of it. The action jumped off the screen. I always knew about the NWA through the magazines but to see it was special. Then I found Wrestling from Florida, the Carolina's & Mid South on other uhf channels and I was in heaven. NWA was a better brand of wrestling than the WWWF/WWF & AWA.
i was watching the same shows---i was happy to suddenly find the florida wrestling---i didn't see carolina wrestling though....i know what you mean, i kind of preferred the l.a. nwa and the fla. wrestling to the wwwf---we never did have access to awa---then there was iwa, briefly
Jimmy Lennon was the best !!! what a great era for wrestling, watching from the Olympic every week. Funny, the Americas title seemed to change hands every other week
Man being from the east coast the people from la were lucky seeing wrestling at the Olympic every Wednesday and Friday that must have been so awesome the la territory and all the other ones need to come back
Rocky Johnson was the first 'Good Guy' wrestler I was exposed to as a child. He had finesse, great moves and was very straightforward. He didnt bring a lot of drama to the ring, no loud mouth trash-talking of his opponents. He let his wrestling speak for itself. After a series of successful title defenses, mostly against patsy wrestlers, he was brutally attacked by Freddie Blassie as Blassie stole his belt. This brought up a highly anticipated match between Johnson and Blassie. Blassie was the consummate 'Bad Guy' wrestler. Johnson never got the title back as far as I know and Blassie ushered in a new era of bad guy wrestlers. Eventually Blassie tried to sell himself as a gracious 'Good Guy' wrestler, but he could never fully leave behind his 'Bad Guy' roots. He went on to be a manager of 'Bad Guy' wrestlers in the WWF.
? Wouldn't that be Dick Lane since he called the matches. Jimmy was the ring announcer. He introduced the principals for wrestling and boxing. Both were so great. The non-Japanese announcer for this is Jules Strongbow. It was the Bakersfield TV version of the Wednesday live show.
This "boy"?? Sign of the times because it was 1970? When I 1st started watching, channel 41 NYC, I thought the Olympic was in NY, until I tried calling--
