Take into account that those guys may have come straight from work.I sat in that audience in July 71.The show was taped at 5:30.Also back then people dressed up more. You would never see someone in there with shorts.
Watching this clip was a like finding gold in your backyard. Almost all of the video recordings of Woody hosting the Tonight Show were lost by some truely stupid people at NBC. That my friends was a true crime. How sad.
I don't recall there being a dress code. But it's a moot point. It was a different world then and people would not have gone to a TV taping or a Bway show dressed like they were going to the beach like they would now.
Woody would have been great as a career stand-up host. Then again I would miss The Purple Rose of Cairo, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, Midnight in Paris, etc....
I just watched the entire Tonight Show that this snip of film is from. It was a miracle to have my DVD show up today and it proved me wrong. At least the first night of his sitting in Carson's hair is available on ebay.
Jeffrey Marx Do you know where to get Carson's Tonight Show from 23 May 1969? Woody Allen was a guest that evening but I'm looking for his other guest who has never seen it since he appeared that night.
You can certainly make the argument that talk shows were better back then. But I would also say that talk show sets definitely weren't better back then.
Woody's ad-libbing skills are insane. So fucking funny.

This role, he keeps it clean but walked that perfect line.
WOODY IS THE BEST
Man, what a quick wit!
Damn, he is quick.
So fast and so funny.
Woody in his prime.

you're absolutely right - it's May 1971
This would have been circa 1970-71, based on the background (the New York set was laid out like this from 1969 to 1971).
He is so quick!
I would put Woody Allen, Carlin then Robin Williams in this order. for me anyway.
Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert, none of them could be this guy's piss boy...and he was just filling in
MAGNIFICO
Reminds me of his "Play It Again Sam" character.
Fucking brilliant and funny

Vespray "kills airborne bacteria and keeps rooms pleasantly scented for hours".

This is amazing. Where did you get this
From a friend, many years back
NBC failed to save so many of the episodes of The Tonight Show, including the week that Woody hosted the legendary how. What a bunch of fools.

Jeffrey Marx Ok, I spelled "chair" wrong. I'm not perfect.

Michael Pohorly I have no idea if that episode was one of hundreds that were destroyed. I've never seen any of it.
Guess what, all these years later and there are still idiots there.
C'mon, guys. I really like it ducks wistful What's your opinion about it, guys !!!
Ed and Woody... Who knew?
Never knew until watching this freak the hint of the name, 'WOODY'
You can certainly make the argument that talk shows were better back then. But I would also say that talk show sets definitely weren't better back then.
Fordham1969 Depends on what you want to hear. As an individual.
I feel like the "because I'm religiously wide open" joke went over people's heads at 2:39. Think about it.
And you and Woody are above the rest of us morons.
I didn't get it either.
I like this Johnny better.
It doesn't look right that Ed McMahon is there without Carson.
Looked great!!
Had to look up "Vespray." It's a pesticide.
Do unto to others and then get the hell out of town quickly, perfect philosophy Woody!! Funny and unscripted
Lol, "you mean a fatty".
Men wearing suits and ties to sit in a studio audience.
Where did Woody get the eyeglasses and the fake nose? I've been looking all over for them and can't find them!
Ed's laughter sounded so fake.
Why did he ever turn serious? Please go back to being funny, Woody!
He is funny. I don't see him taking any of this seriously.
Push the button, Max!
