Through all the controversy, all his bad decisions, all the rumors, people forget that this was one of the 20th Century's best and funniest comedians, an engaging author, a brilliant filmmaker, a quietly excellent Jazz musician. No, his flaws can't be overlooked, nor excused. Can you separate the art from the behavior of the artist? Can you listen to a Wagner piece, dazzled by its genius without being repulsed by Wagner's vile anti-semitism? Can you laugh at a Cosby routine, or a Naked Gun scene featuring OJ, without a care for the victims of these men who turned out to be sexual predators and, in Simpson's case, a murderer? This is stuff that keeps me awake at night....
He was well on his way by this point, of course, or this spot wouldn't exist. But the next few years saw Woody become a much more assured, economical comedian.
Allen was a great standup comic. I’ve got the double LP and CD. “The police showed up at the last minute and took his side, which I thought was in extreme poor taste.” funny line.
This is a very early Woody Allen performance. Apparently, because of his shyness in the early days he would often run off the stage as soon as he finished.
Twenty years ago, I was invited to be a guest on a talk radio program. The host then bumped me a day before my scheduled appearance in favor of a local politician. The host called me to reschedule. I declined. He was stunned. He offered to pre-record it with me but I still declined.
@@peterschmitz6446 Follow him where/in what? To be a Hollyweird Director? To be a habitual womanizer? To wear glasses? To speak English? To be famous? To marry a woman 40 years younger than I? Woody Allen was a very popular stand up comedian. I have a double LP (do you know what those are) of his nightclub routines. His manager said they always had to have someone go with him to the night clubs to push him on stage because he was so terrified. They also held the bucket as he spent the time before his spot vomiting he was so frightened. Fine on stage but terrified to get there.
No, no. These comments are wrong. I'm 72 years old. I remember. Being nervous in front of the audience was part of the act. Maybe he really was nervous, but it was part of the act.
Too many people in this day and age wouldn't even know what _mollify_ means the standards of English education in the English-speaking world have eroded so much since 1962.
It's so well written though. His use of language is really unsurpassed. Such phrases as "struck a tremendous shot across the frontal lobe" or "mollified by shiny objects". And then he can be very economic with his words as well like "we gave". He is rushing through on this occasion which is partly nervousness and partly not having enough confidence in his material at the time. Later performances shows when he is starting to enjoy himself. Good job, because there was a time when he was thinking of giving up. But then it was suggested that he give it his best shot for 11 months and if he didn't feel he was getting better he could give up. This prospect seemed to work for him. The pressure was off I guess.
Columbia record club....i stocked my entire collection and never paid more than the one penny i would paste on the postcard. It was like being on record welfare.
I met Woody Allen on a street in Manhattan around 2005. Before he could react, my wife grabbed him and I took a photo. It’s hilarious because he looks so awkward and flustered as if someone just gave him a surprise wedgie. True story !
Hair? Woody or Jack? Paar wore a wig. Woody? Maybe he has a few plugs now on top, maybe more. Woody was nervous - basically threw out the material - needed better timing, which he got later.
Why would you feel the need to be so caustic to someone else whom you've judged to be less intelligent? You can disagree with someone without being verbally abusive. I mean, I feel misanthropic all the time--but I try to restrain myself. Were you having a bad day or what?
@@stevefowler5970 I thought she was funny in her earlly days, and clever and sincere. However, her humor degenerated and became simply rude and crude in her last years. Woody Allen may have had personal issues, but his humor remained intelligent and clever.
Dumbing down of America? When I looked up Allen Funt I lol'ed, the only thing that will go over peoples heads today are references to people who probably died before I was born.
That’s an opinion about someone who at the pinnacle of his career was the best comedy filmmaker of his time, had jokes published in New York newspapers when he was in high school and at 20 was working with Mel Brooks and Larry Gilbert (the man behind M*A*S*H) on the Sid Caesar show. But every opinion is valid.
Woody is a Genius of Comedy - Annie Hall is still one of the funniest Movies ever made.
Brilliant. Still funny today which says a lot. Funnier even than many of today’s so called comedians
Haven't caught these bits before. Thanks for posting. What a great host Jack Paar was.
Steve Allen was better, I think.

Woody’s stand up. This is a classic.
I'm reading woodys latest book apropos about nothing. a great read. 😂😂

'Police took thug's side.'
It's funny because it's true.
Oh how the comedy has changed since then!
The humor here is more in the delivery and all the fidgeting than the actual material.
This is a very early Woody Allen performance. Apparently, because of his shyness in the early days he would often run off the stage as soon as he finished.
Watching him increase in speed as he performed makes that thought very likely.
Can you imagine what being bumped is like?
I remember tuning in to David Letterman to see my young friend Alison Krauss and she was bumped.
Might you be a relative of the late Thomas Leonard Shevlin?
Twenty years ago, I was invited to be a guest on a talk radio program. The host then bumped me a day before my scheduled appearance in favor of a local politician. The host called me to reschedule. I declined. He was stunned. He offered to pre-record it with me but I still declined.
I've viewed these acts a few years later. He takes his time. Here he mistakenly crammed too many great jokes in a time race.
You should be smart, to follow him .

Woody Allen is Genius 😂
Loved it

Yes, I know what a double LP was! I had a bunch of them. I was also a member of the Columbia Record Club. I did manage to resign from it.

"...I want him to be bigger than I was!" Wish granted, Mr. Paar.
So you’re saying he was below paar in this performance ?
This is very early Woody! Thanks for uploading.
It really is amazing to see how much he developed. He was clearly going way too fast. Just amazing video.
Yes, he rolled over several punch lines that would have gotten laughs if he had paused.
actually he wasn't going fast ENOUGH (Woody) LOL
You're right. Most people don't know who Allen Funt is
this is priceless!
That is a very funny man.

Towering comedic genius
He's 5'3"
Too many people in this day and age wouldn't even know what _mollify_ means the standards of English education in the English-speaking world have eroded so much since 1962.
By the time he recorded most of this two years later, he spoke slower and you could tell he knew where the laughs were.
Amazing footage.

So authentically funny. A great.

Madison and 77th? Rent must have been peanuts then for an up-and- coming comic.
He'd already been doing TV writing for years.
He was the best paid "gag man" on Madison Avenue even before he made it on his own.
No, but they were accepting macadamias.
So great at making movies but we forget what a super stand up comic he is.
Pure dada
Woody slaughtering.
Did NBC release Jack Parr DVDs?
Where would any comedian get 6 minutes these days?
I agree!

Woody Age 27
Wassup, You've Outdone Yourself. grate hop What's happening..
you can see him looking at his hand for notes

He does a great job of sucking you into his ramblings.
Too funny
It just occurs to me that 1962 Woody also would have been way too old for Mariel Hemingway in Manhattan.
How old is this guy???? He gos back to black and white TV ???
Joe Guzman
Twenty five
Older than TV
Not all this material was exactly boffo. But Woody's frenetic style of delivery was brilliantly funny. Jack Paar, as always, was embarrassing.
Ouch.
how about fluoride in the water bud? plus I'm sure he/she meant the dumbing down of comedy too
You wana do comedy 🤣 watch his timing its why Jack Frickn Parr gave him the monolog time he's a brilliant man
Jack Paar was quick and witty--i.e.quickwitted.
Pretty sure Joan Rivers and Woody were interchangeable at that time.
except Joan was never funny

Candid Camera? Smile! Not a big novelty anymore in this day and age with security and servaailence camera s everywhere.
so he really used to have hair
He still has reasonable hair at 87 😂
Todays audience's would not get his humor because of the dumbing down of American.
Really?
I get it - so I think a lot of Others get it too - he is a Legend.
I'm a member of today's audience, I've been dumbed down, and I get it and appreciate him.
Yes

His tie keeps getting in front of his jacket and it's pissing me off. I must have OCD.

lol rising in education. says who? the government who doesn't want us smart
What was supposed to be funny about the man who was beaten by robbers and now can’t connect the dots?
not very good here
He's not funny. Reality comedy is enduring.
I would love to hear stand-up from the Pilgrims or the Neanthertal era.
Why his this shit being recycled after years where it belongs in the trash?

If there was a Mt. Rushmore of great humorists Woody Allen would make the cut. He created more comedy than any other comedian of the 20th century.
