  • Dell’s new workstation lineup includes the 5820, 7820, and the 7920 Tower workstations. There’s also a 7920 Rack workstation providing greater security, manageability, and support for multiple users. Dell has also added a few entry-level towers to their portfolio, like the Precision 3630. But today we are looking at the Dell Precision 5820 tower workstation, which is the next step up from the entry-level workstations. This is not the most powerful workstation in the world but ask yourself, “do you really need the most powerful workstation in the world?” Most of us would say yes, until realizing I said…Watch the video!

    Is the Precision line generally more beefy with fewer bugs than their XPS series? Most of my work is done through online apps but I do need photo and video editing. My current XPS tower just seems to slow down too often even using Fios 100 Gb. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    I think I made a mistake? I ordered one with just a 2.5” 1 TB HDD only. Should I have gotten an 2.5” 256gb m.2 SSD class 40 instead? Or would one of each had been sufficient? I did order it with a Xeon w2123 with dual Radeon pro wx 2100. I intended to use the computer as somewhat an entry level workstation. It has not shipped yet so I’m assuming now would be the only chance to add a m.2 256gb SSD class 40 before shipment, unless Would I be able to purchase one and install it myself considering It will come with a 425W Chassis? Any help/ advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi, on dell site it offers the 5820 with option for xeon or 8th gen core cpus. Is motherboard/socket the same for each option, or what I am really getting at, can u upgrade/change cpu from xeon to core, core to xeon later? Thanks.

    I got dell precision 5820 today with intel xeon w-2235 6 core cpu, nvme 512gb, 32 gb ram. All other workstation features. I have rtx 2070 so I didn't go for Quadro card.
    Its far better than any gaming rig in terms of continuous performance.

      Yep. I have built gaming rigs in the past and would never go back to that. I have the older versions of this machine 5810 and 7810 and and these things are rock solid, super easy to work on (e.g. no screwdrivers needed for anything). I have also built a couple of gaming rigs based on the 5810 using the E5-2667 V4 CPU (cheap now days), one with a GTX1080 and one with a 1070ti. The owners cannot believe the performance and how cool and quiet they run, and they never crash. These things are underrated for what they can do.

Everything else about this system looks great but just would prefer to get a 2-3 screen workflow without going through a 3rd party. Appreciate any info :3

      HI Arthur, I suppose you can use the chassis and modify the connection points to support a different board but I would argue that it would no longer be a Dell workstation. It is a nice case though… Was thinking about installing an EVGA board in my old MAC G5 workstation as the PSU had a full melt-down. I don't think it will be a MAC either in the end. BTW, The board is custom designed for the chassis and you will not find others that use the same mounting points. Good luck with your Franken-Workstation, and thanks for watching!

    Would it be possible to replace the graphics card with a 3070?

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Keiden,
      It is not in the list of supported cards ,and we have not added one of these cards to any of our systems. Legal disclaimers aside, based on the specifications for the card (www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/30-series/rtx-3070/) you will need the optional 950W PSU in the Precision 5820. We have a pretty good resource of documentation and information on our site for the 5820 here: www.itcreations.com/workstation-dell/Dell-Precision-5820-Tower-Workstation.asp. The card requires a minimum power rating on the system of 650W and uses 220W of power. Check to make sure you don't have the typical 425W PSU because you will need the 950W PSU. The good thing- they are easy to replace. I believe the card comes with a cable adapter if you don't have an 8-pin connector. Don't quote me on that, LOL. Thanks for watching!

    Hi to all the guys here. Would like to make an important question in my case concerning these dell computers that come with raid as an active drive controller (intel rst active) and not ahci. The problem is that whenever i try to boot into these machines in a winpe environment with the Strelec package if you know that, in order to reset the admin password if i cannot log into it or just backup the data of a user into an external hdd before reinstalling windows if the precedent os is damaged and cannot be repaired, the internal hdd-s or ssd-s of just the os directories into the drives are invisible. I click on “This PC” and there’s only my usb visible and nothing else. I made a search on the internet and it seems it has something to do with the intel rst driver that abstracts the hdd from the os. Please help me, what should i do in this case in order to be able managing the pc even when the pc is unbootable or just the admin password is not recognized.

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  10 місяців тому

      Not sure if this will answer your question. The onboard SATA controller does indeed have an AHCI and a "RAID On" mode. If you have it set to the RAID, then you need to create the RAID array first in the controller and then the OS should see it. If that doesn't do the trick, more in depth troubleshooting is required.

    • @almedogjurgji
      @almedogjurgji 10 місяців тому

      @@Itcreations-LA the raid active in bios means that the intel rapid storage technology is active and not that the pc must necessarily work with a raid array. It has only one internal hard drive and it works fine. I log normally into windows and i can normally see the internal hard drive going on “this pc”, but the same doesn’t happen when i boot onto the pc from the strelec winpe which is an exceptional package of tools. When i click on “this pc” being in a winpe environment, either the internal hard drive is invisible or it is visible but invisible are the OS directories inside the hard disk.

      @@almedogjurgji I worked a bit with the Intel RST on my Linux machine. Looking elsewhere on the internet, people have had a mixed bag with the RST as a bootable device. I would suggest getting the PCI-E adapter (preferred Dell version) and boot to M.2 . Use the array for file storage. Yeah, not what you wanted but after two months, you may just decide to go in that direction.

    Hello, and thank you for the excellent review for the Dell Precision 5820 Workstation.
    The company I work for is looking for a replacement of the aging Dell Precision 5810 Workstation, the older brother of the computer Workstation that you review here. This is how it work with our company: the newer boxes going to engineer’s and the older PC’s going down the line to drafters and other office workers. The Precision 5810 Workstation was purchased with 32 GB Memory and older NVIDIA Quadro K4000 video cards. Asking for the better card was no go. I think that it would be easier to pull the wisdom tooth from my boss mouth then a money for the better NVidia Quadro card like a K5000 or K6000.
    I’ll say I’m not an IT manager. Only do computer work because corporate office doesn’t have anyone in our building that willing to help IT manager from corporate. I do not think that my recommendation goes further than him, however he do listen and some time helps in what we need.
    The new Dell Precision 5820 Workstation we want is to have a 64 GB of RAM or more and NVIDIA Quadro and Tesla card cards. Need that for the flow analysis - we are in diecast business.
    Your recommendation will be appreciated.

    Can you elaborate on the usage of PCIE0 & PCIE1 connectors and what they are for on 5820 & 7820 motherboards near CPU?

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  5 років тому

      Hi affistasubble, The PCIe slots, also known as expansion slots, provide a fast direct line of communication to the CPU and enables you to personalize the system to your needs with graphics processing units (GPUs) those would be the graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD. You can also use the PCIe slots (or expansion slots) to add faster network connection cards, typically it comes with one or two built-in Ethernet ports that provide up to 1GbE (1 gigabyte Ethernet) but you can install a network card that will provide 10/25 GbE for faster network communications. They can also be used for a WiFi card, more storage with PCIe-based M.2 storage devices, thunderbolt for super-fast data transfers and other things that, in general , are designed to enhance your productivity or the performance of the system. Some companies start out with a PCIe 0 which may be a slot on the motherboard dedicated for a specific function like a network daughter card (NDC) or M.2 drives or something. The other slots (1 thru whatever…) can support a variety of cards including double-wide GPUs which may block one of the adjacent PCIe slots. I hope that answers your question, if not add another comment or check out our page on the 5820 here, bit.ly/2Nr3yc4 that features a short summary the system with links to the specifications, owner's manual, and others. Thanks for watching!

      Hi there,
      Sorry for the initial basic tutorial… If you look in the Specifications for the 5820 you will see mention of "future support for U.2 NVME drives". Those would be front-mounted 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch (not sure on the existence of the 3.5-inch form factor) I believe those will connect directly to the system board through PCIE0 or PCIE1 ports, which utilize the SFF-8643 Mini-SAS port providing 12Gb/s access speeds. Connecting to the onboard ports will provide access to RAID those drives through VROC. Dell will likely upgrade the system in the next few months at which time those ports will be the new show stopper for this platform. Assuming they do the upgrade before the technology is replaced by something else… This cable on Amazon has the port connector, here: www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Internal-SFF-8643-SFF-8639/dp/B0716K357W/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_2/132-3398048-4628411?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0716K357W&pd_rd_r=69674641-44f6-11e9-9631-1fad997b334a&pd_rd_w=UAmdR&pd_rd_wg=ietYp&pf_rd_p=6725dbd6-9917-451d-beba-16af7874e407&pf_rd_r=BKPMSMW7Q8JKBK5NC558&psc=1&refRID=BKPMSMW7Q8JKBK5NC558

      We have never tested the NVIDIA 4090 card in the Dell 5820 workstation tower so cannot say for sure. However, in theory, it does seem compatible. The system does support up to 600W of graphics cards and is compatible with dual 300W cards. The 4090 Ada Gen is a triple-wide card, a GeForce gaming card, supports PCIe 4.0 and comes with power cables, which I think would be adequate compared to dual RTX A6000 (Ampere) cards but does require the 950W PSU. It will definitely take out a few more PCIe slots than a double-wide card. Hope that helps, thanks for watching! Good luck and tell us how it goes.

      Hi Ashish, I believe this card will work on this system, although we have not tested it and it is not included in the list of supported GPUs for this system. That said, they can't test every card! The thing to look for when considering cards that are not in the list of supported cards is the power draw. The spec sheet here: www.itcreations.com/user-manuals/5820-Tower/Precision-5820-Tower-Spec-Sheet.pdf states "Support for 2 PCI Express® x16 Gen 3 graphics card - up to 600W with maximum of up to 2 x 300W
      double width graphics cards." In this case the K40c has a power draw of 245W. the Quadro P6000 has a power draw of up to 250W, so they are comparable and the P6000 is supported. Both also require a double-wide x16 slot, and there's a pair of those just for this purpose. Although, This card (K40c) does not have any video output so you will need to install another card just to support video as I believe this system does not have integrated video support. Here are the specifications for the K40c and the P6000, respectively: www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/tesla-k40c.c2505
      images.nvidia.com/content/pdf/quadro/data-sheets/192152-NV-DS-Quadro-P6000-US-12Sept-NV-FNL-WEB.pdf
      I hope that helps with your decision. BTW check out IT Creations as we carry a bunch of high-performance GPUs but the K40c will take about 3-4 days to get but we can give you a quote if you are interested, sales@itcreations.com

    Does Dell Precision Tower 5820 Workstation support RTX3090 GPU?

      Hi there KB,
      I do think this card will work with the 950W PSU installed on the system but only 1 card. That said, it would also depend on the card model as some have extra fans and an abnormally large case size so be sure to look at the dimensions of whichever variant of this family you choose to install prior to purchase. Here are the spec sheets for both the Dell 5820 and the Nvidia RTX 3090:

      It is very capable, there is no denying. However, check out the Dell 7920 for the most powerful. It was released at the same time as the 5820. ua-cam.com/video/jP65i_Iqml8/v-deo.html

      @@Itcreations-LA Yeah. I know. I was looking to replace my T3610 with another T3610 or maybe upgrade it to this 5820 because of all of the USB-3 ports and the USB-C ports and because of all of the external drives I use and need to reorganize and get consolidated.

      Oh, one more thing. these are the last generation. We have only received one of the newest Dell tower workstations released this year. We had it very briefly for a day or two. Behold the Dell 7865 with AMD Threadripper PRO CPU. ua-cam.com/video/pHYnT3ATnzo/v-deo.html
      HP has also released their latest generation workstations too. Hopefully you will be seeing a review of that one on our channel soon. Be well!

      Perhaps i should have been more clear. Last as in previous generation. Dell has moved on to support the "latest" processors from Intel and AMD which are both now on the 4th generation. More cores, support for DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0, etc…
