I totally agree. I believe the soul of the hobby isn't inside of Zion Cases and museum glass. It's in the long white boxes at card shops and card shows. It's the feeling you get when you'd open a pack as a kid and pull an amazing card, the smell of the cards themselves. To me, that's the hobby.
Whenever i see videos: Are Base cards dead? I quickly do an eBay search of any current All-Star’s rookie base cards, and there are always 50, 100, 150 sales going back 3 months for PSA 9 and 10. If the base cards are dead, then why are collectors buying these cards? Everybody has a PC, and your PC can’t be all high end/low pop cards. The average collector doesn’t have the $$$ for that type of collection so that’s where the mid/low end market comes in. I went through my collection recently and i would say 30-40% of it are specific rookie cards that appeal to the masses and i could sell easily tomorrow. The other 60% are just good old PSA 9 base cards of players i always liked that don’t have mass appeal. I recently bought a 1989 Score Rod Woodson PSA 9 rookie card for $25. 1991 UD Dikembe Mutombo PSA 9 rookie for $15. 1992 Bowman Manny Ramirez PSA 9 rookie for $20. These are guys i enjoyed watching as a kid and love that i can get their rookies for dirt cheap. We all have that 60% in our PC that just appeals to us with no illusions the cards will ever go up. That’s the fun of the hobby.

I was also that kid with the 89 Pro Set vs Score struggle. Pro Set was much more affordable, but I never liked the college uniform rookies, so Score was always the reach. But as a kid without a lot of money the Score packs were a luxury and given no inserts back in the day, each and every card in the pack was cool in-and-of-itself. Ah, nostalgia....

Interesting perspective. Thanks to inflation, a dad then buying a $4 card for his son is like a dad now buying a $10 card for theirs.
And both feel like things Dads at either time would do. And what the child could get at those times could be a fun treat that hopefully makes them love that player/team/sport a little bit more :)

Watch Geoff Wilson's trade videos and see multiple 10 year olds coming up to trade with him. Every kid pulls out multiple cards that are priced at $1000 EA++. For 98% of the kids watching these videos, and adults for that matter, a card like that would be their once in a lifetime grail card. To be held and displayed forever. But we are supposed to believe this is the hobby. And, in turn, feel scorn when we say it's fun to go through the $1-$5 bins because we actually collect certain players and certain teams. The hobby as projected on social media and UA-cam in 2024 makes me sad to be honest.
Preach Dad! I learned my lesson, mosaic megas are out, and instead of buying 300 in megas and MAYBE pulling a blue wemby, I bought one for 40 bucks yesterday! they were posted for 150 and 4 days later got it for 40..moral of the story PATIENCE!

Exactly. I’ve been preaching this for a long time, yet the “investors” refused to see it. I see it over and over as I set up at local shows.
Also, social media is not the real world.
Card shows are awesome as I remember back in the day they use to have free card show at the local mall and it was heaven!❤
So, what's the latest news about the $2,000,000 card heist at the Dallas card show a couple of months ago?...I can find nothing on the web or on UA-cam...it seems that the story has just disappeared.
Yeah man I miss those days...actually before 2017 Hobby boxes were still reasonable. Haven't felt the same emotional joy over sports cards since.

Im a dealer and i do the local shows and there are more low end to middle cards that sale the most……

If the low end cards weren't a thing then my collection would be 1% of what it is now

I think the word it's self HIT has lost all meaning. Look how many auto's and 1/1 variations there are. So there's literally how many 1/1
I just appreciate the friendships I develop from this hobby!!!...It just so happened I am a big Judge fan!!! I PC him and Jeter !!! Some of my favorite cards of them are not worth much monetary value !!! They are worth the memories and their is no money value in that!!! Topps series 1 Basic 2023 Judge # 62 ....Right now my favorite card!! It will be a classic someday !!! It has it all in one card!!!

What price ranges would you use to describe low, mid, and high end cards?
It's different for everybody. For me low end would be $1 - $30. Mid end $30 - $500, and high end $500+
He drives me crazy seeing these kids at card shows carrying two $3000 cards and these Zion cases full of cards I’m 45 years old. I remember when I went to card shows and my dad gave me $50 I thought oh my God I have so much money it’s ridiculous nowadays Where these kids are getting so much money that their parents are giving them

Are we surprised which is the true heartbeat of our hobby?
This just my opinion and what I personally have seen. I'm slowly starting to distance myself from the hobby. There is so much stress with having your cards graded, and only graded by PSA. There seems to be more stress out there for only having a Gem mint 10 grade or else your card is worthless, I mean who wants a 9, let alone a 8 or 7. Also prices for players that have not even proven themselves. I'm baffled on prices for some players. I know some people are way to deep in but man just cut your losses. I've done really good at times and had to cut my losses too. I try to buy some cards in hopes they go up enough to allow me to get into a bigger card I would like, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Im just getting tired of trying to keep up with all the stuff I mentioned above. Money is not a problem, I always try to spend within my means, but I'm not going to spend where it doesn't make sense. Lately I have been buying players from my childhood and not stressing out about the flavor of the week. Again, just my feeling on how the hobby is for me.

I was just at a card show n what I realized is that soccer cards are dead unless they r high end and baseball has dropped dramatically as well for cards $100 and less

I argue with people on UA-cam all the time they need to get off the internet and actually go to shows . Their negative perception of kids only caring about super expensive cards and flipping and not collecting is just not reality
I feel old when we have the “ when I was a kid story “ I was 12 in 2004. I’m not that old but it was so different. Topps Chrome hobby boxes were $70. Anyone else remember people losing their mind over $500 Exquisite? I remember shop owners laughing at their distributors saying no one will buy it and distributors having to beg people to take it

The hobby as represented by most on social media does not reflect what's really going on in the sports card market. Singles represent over 25% of our sales in both shops and online. We project that % to grow to 40% within the next 12 months. It is, by far, the single biggest growth opportunity we have.
