- This video covers a 2 day trip I made to Flylight Aviation based at Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton.
If you want to just look at the modification and Ben Ashman explaining the effects and why I was suggested to me, then please jump to 9:57.
The Flylight team were brilliant and couldn't have been more accommodating.
I hope you enjoyed the video.

Well that was more technical than I thought! Here's to some XC flights soon Giles! I can't wait to follow along!
I did wonder why you were camping out in your van when we spoke last, clears that mystery up!
Awesome!
I do try and help where I can, as do you. Hope to fly together soon.
Ben, When I made my decision to go with the North Wing ATF Solarius, I weighed 265 lbs. I just had weight loss surgery 2 weeks ago. Each day I get lighter & lighter. Your trike is looking better & better!
Is your comment for Ben Ashman or myself. If it's for Ben, he unfortunately won't see this unless he looks for it on my video. I really hope the weight loss surgery is successful and you can get your hands on a Peabee.
Being a Yank, it’s amazing to me you have to use the radio like our airline pilots-even at a grass airstrip. We make position checks, but it’s very informal… I prefer it that way
At licensed airfields with a Tower it's all a bit formal, I prefer the blind calling, or not. Darley Moor is so informal, it's quite nice really. You seem to get quite the flying adventures from your YT shorts.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I do get to have some fun flying adventures! Between my own airplanes and work, I am a lucky dude!
Keep them coming.. I just have the mini adventures of teaching.. But it's been a fantastic career change.
Hope you can bring Mr. Ashman to the interview seat soon. A long interview would be a fascinating one I think :-)
I have interviewed him. Not this week, but next week.
That was very interesting and informative. Removing length from one end and adding it to the other seems almost like an old joke here in the US. However, as Ben explained, it made perfect sense. Thank you Giles and happy flying!
Haha, I hadn't thought of it like that but yes. 1 cut, same length, with a few technical bits inside. I hole 2020 will really allow me to spread my wings, so to speak.
I enjoyed the narration while on your way to shop. Check out that Insta360 One X! Very cool! It’s so wild hearing all of the radio communication! That new wing mount looks rad! Lots of new things happening in this video. That looked awesome as he swooped in front of you. Very cool! OVERALL: Super informative video. Thank you for sharing.
I just need to get my 360 working, oh wait it the operator that is the issue.
Brilliant to see you flying solo- Ive been watching yoir other vids as I am learning to fly flexwings with Flylight at Sywell. !! Its inspirational!!
Thank you. I just enjoy sharing my passion for flying. I hope your lessons are going well, they are a really good bunch of instructors there.
Wonderful.... Now I have to buy a PB to compliment my Paramotor... Thanks Giles!
I'm sorry I've caused you more expense. I'm completely smitten with mine.
Love it love it!!! Great videos and such a nice place to fly.
Sywell is a great big airfield and is very busy. Glad you like the video.. I'm slowly learning to use the software. Hopefully more adventures this year.
Looks great fun Giles!
Hi Jamie, are you playing catch up? Has school finished already..haha
@@GolfFoxtrot22 yep. Schools hols.... annnd it’s windy 🤦♂️
It was a bit late releasing today.
Very smart modification and great video. Beautiful day to fly too. Thumbs up 👍
Flylight have been around aviation for a long long time. It was a joy to watch them at work. Yes I was very lucky with the weather, it was almost like a mini holiday.
Brilliant video Giles. The PeaBee hang point mod is going to make for some very relaxed long cross country flights. You lucky so n so:) If I had the spare cash to spend I would really be considering one for myself. I had better spend some more time at the salt mine!!
Welldone
See you soon at the Challow club meeting
Sandy
Sandy, thanks. I'm certainly looking forward to going places now.
Your wing looks really nice in the sun, looking forward to seeing it in the air if you venture up this way again.
Tom, I'll have to make a special journey, just to see you buddy. Yes, it does look good in the sun.
Good choices in music in the video's, and great editing of the video's, I'd love to see super long flights up to Scotland etc, or over the channel etc.
Thank you. Long trips would take quite a bit of planning, with legs limited to 50-60 miles for fuel, covering 800 plus miles to Scotland will take a long time. I think I'd need a chase boat to cover the channel, cool idea though. If only I didn't have a day job.
Great vid Giles and a really liked hearing Ben - a real scoop! Got my mod now and looking forward to some flying weather to try it out...
Dave, I had to leave Ben's transmissions in, it wouldn't be right without them. Hopefully one day we will be able to fly together, I've watched all of your PeaBee videos.
Golf Foxtrot 22 No I didn’t mean in the air - the long bit at the end. And I for one really dug the RT - somehow I passed the FRTOL exam on Wednesday so it was specially interesting!
@@hwamblan oh.. Woops. Ben was learning brevity. I kept having to say, keep it short.... That was short for Ben. The whole team are so welcoming. Congratulations on passing your RT licence. It's a whole new world now. Don't be afraid, just get out and use it. No one shouts if you get it wrong.
Great video Giles. Very informative!
Thank you. Ben and the team were really helpful.
Hi. I found your channel quite by accident. I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos, so much so I have now contacted Ben at Flylight and will be looking to get myself some instruction, a Pea Bee and get airborne! Cheers, Rob
Hi Rob, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. Flying is a huge part of my life and the PeaBee has taken it to the next level for me. I hope to bump into you at some of the fly-ins next year. Keep me posted on your lessons.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 will do, thank you!
Nice one Giles. Great explanation of the mod and some lovely flying shots. Even got Howard Jones in on the act!
Howard Jones??
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Thought I heard he was creeping in on the backing track with New Song but listening again it isn't him.
@@NicholasStreet I use Epidemic sound for my music. I had to Google who Howard Jones was!! :)
Oh dear! Showing my age there!
@@NicholasStreet it will come to me. I'm a late 70's child.
That sure looks like a nice mod. I bet it has a higher hands off glide speed as well. It should be easier to land with out power. Awesome. Thanks for the video.
Keith, it certainly did feel better in the glide and flare. I just need some more good weather to go and fly now.
thanks for the vid. good to see your enthusiasm. i enjoyed it very much. keep up the great editing. maybe you can do a vid on filming in a microlight
Thank you. Do you mean filming me in a microlight? Or how to film in a microlight?
Fantastic!
It was a short but rewarding flight. Sywell is quite busy as well.
An interesting way of saying his moved the cg on the wing. But either way great video. Those things are so cool.
Yes, you are correct but it has lots of implications if it not carried out correctly. And yes they are cool but paramotoring still has its place.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 oh absolutely. If you get it wrong then somebody will get hurt at best. I just love seeing things fly. Its fascinating. I'm happy with the paramotor but to be honest if I had more money I would invest in more toys 😁
@@justharryjohnson7250 hope to see you at the Bore Chasers.
Luvly Jubly ... an excellent mod' for XC work :-0
Bring on the better weather Brian.
Excellent explanation, thanks. Seems like this is the way it should've come from the factory (Aeros)...with the hang-block forward or able to be put forward. With the way you have it now you can go faster or you can slow it down.
I'm sure Aeros will take on board this and make it a formal modification. I'm really happy with it now.
Very interesting, as usual, and very clear explanation of this very useful modification. Thank you for sharing.
Questions #1: how much this option will cost.
Question #2: just wondering if this modification is OK with Aeros.
Hi Sam and welcome to the channel. This mod was approved and tested by Aeros before it was carried out. Also all the new fox wings come like this as standard, but don't have an adjustable option, just the new forward fixed location. I hope that helps.
Fantastic video.
l've been looking forwards to this and it was even better than l was hoping.
Great to see Ben explain exactly how this mod is implemented and its effects.
One question; Does it change the 'feel' of the flare when landing ?
Thanks :O)
It didn't change the feel of the flare, however as it comes in with more speed as its already flying faster, there was less need to pull the bar in. I was really happy, as you might have noticed. I suppose because I'm not having to pull the bar, and then just push to flare, it felt more natural in the flare. I hope that makes sense.
Hi Giles, interesting video (as always!), where do you put your radio, do you just clip it to your jacket? Do you have an aerial extension or is the standard aerial good enough?
Hello Rob, I just clip it to the harness and just use the standard aerial. I can transmit over 10 miles which is more than enough for a standard joining call. I hope that helps.
Giles greetings from Spain! I´m making my way too from airplanes to flexwing and you help me a lot with this hard journey... after so many years of airplane it is a lot to change on my mind!
One question: Which GPS are you using on the Peebe? I see on some videos but no in all of them. Thanks, José.
Hello Jose, I'm glad your English is better than my Spanish. I'm so glad that the videos have helped. I'm still learning everytime I go up and never want to stop improving, anyway I digress. I'm using very basic GPs considering what is out there at the moment. I have a GP 3+ on the wing, a GP 6 on the front/A frame and a GP7 on my head. The head camera records all the sound and I strip off the other sound to leave only one sound track. Sorry if I went a bit further than your question.
Thanks for your quick response Giles! Maybe I did not explain myself properly, sorry for that... I was wondering about the electronic equipment you have in front of you on this video. It’s mounted on the front strut to the right. I assumed it’s a GPS, but maybe it’s only a variometer and so you misunderstood my question. Regards!
@@clipwingcub ahh ok, yes, it's an all in one system, GPS, moving map, vario, altimeter ( with pressure adjustment) and FLARM. I can also link it to the internet to get live traffic updates. It's called an OUDIE 5 Pro. I hope that helps.
Ok maybe I have to do trikes now.
They are brilliant. The PeaBee has transformed my flying.
Giles that was well worth waiting for mate, how far are you planning on going on the cross-countries? Do you have an RT license? I know that legally you don't need a PPL license or even a medical declaration to fly these little beauties, do you?
No licence for flying as you said, but as my video series might show having some training really does make it an enjoyable experience. I do have an Airband licence. It's a hefty fine for using one without one, if you are caught. I quite enjoy the RT experience. I do want to do some trips to local airfields and then maybe some multi leg trips. I just want to see what is possible in a sub 70 aircraft.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I want to see what's possible as well which is why I shall be watching your channel like a hawk mate!!! - thank you.
@@flybe146 don't watch too closely.. I make mistakes. But that's the joy of making videos. I don't like hiding anything... But unfortunately that also attracts criticism. Life is to short.. Let's go fly.. Oh wait, its pants weather again.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 LOL!!
Thats awesome too be able too keep up a good air speed with hands off Giles!!
Is it a normal practice too fly hands off with these machines?
I assume hands off would be just relaxing your arms but still holding onto the bar:)
When you hold the bar its like just holding the steering wheel, you are literally just resting your arms. The bar moving about is normal and you just follow it. When you let go, it will sit at its trim speed and you just fly along. Mine only turned left because of the weight of the camera and mounting rod on the tip. So to answer you question, you don't normally fly hands off, its just somewhere to rest them. If I wanted to fly faster or slower, I would need to push or pull the bar from this natural trim position. The modification rust takes the slight pressure off.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 very cool Giles thanks for the reply,I'd love too get into flex wing someday!
@@577buttfan I'm just following my dream, a few re-writes along the way but I'm enjoying it.
Great vid and really interesting. It looks as though after the mod it is more comfortable for your hand position as well as gaining the extra speed. If this is the case why is it not constructed like that from original assembly? What are the benefits of not having the modification?
Its a hang glider that is powered. The orgianl setting allow for thermalling and ease of bar pressure at the low end of the speed range. In most flexwing microlights they have a trimmer that can change the trim setting. If you look at some of my early lessons, you'll notice me setting the trim before take-off, it pulls the bar to slow the wing, the peabee is the other way round, I have to pull the bar to get speed. This modification is only a recent addition as more and more owners wanted to go a little bit faster on longer flights, without the bar pressure. I hope that answers your question with a little bit of background.
Golf Foxtrot 22 thanks Giles, understand now. Is Pea Bee going to give this option at purchase going forward?
@@richvincent6282 Ben talks about it in the video. Its an aftermarket option.
Wow - 64kph
whats the VNE of the wing - looked it up, 90KPH max speed!
Cheers
it certainly helps cover the ground and no risk of collapse.
70 KG... how far is that? Today, I'm going to walk 13 ounces. Hahaha...Looks like a lot of fun. Cheers!
I thought I would make up a new distance measurement... I have really enjoyed my journey on my Sub 70 kgs ( licence free) aircraft. They are so much fun.
Thanks for another brilliant video Giles.
Can you glide in your PeaBee with the engine off like in a Hang Glider?
Yes, it is perfectly possible, it glides really well. I need make some videos showing this aspect. I'm going to make some more videos redoing the lessons and part of that is engine off. It glides so well and the new hang point mod really helps the approach speed.
Couldn't you just move the seat a little?
Not really,. Cofg on a hang glider doesn't work like that.
I wish they cost less then $$8000
