Welcome to our pain. If there’s any solace in this abomination, it’s that the game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno, disliked this project so much that he wanted to make another one because he felt the series deserved something better. Considering he went on to direct DMC 3, 4, and 5, all of which are amazing, I think he directed the series to redemption pretty damn well.
@@Byzantophile right yeah, I think I heard this game wasn’t even originally meant to be a DMC game at first Literally everything about this game was a dumpster fire

"I hope the entire team was fucking fired" Actually, the team largely stayed together, determined to learn from the experience, and based on 3 4 and 5, they clearly did. The team were originally from Capcoms Arcade division, and corporate nonsense saw them thrown into a console project they had little skill in.

4:11 This game sucks because Dante was the most serious he ever was, and it bummed everyone out. His parents were dead, Vergil was presumed dead, and he didn't know about Nero yet. He was alone
It had a lot of redeemable qualities, it was just brought down by all the bad things. Honestly I wouldn't mind a complete remake that kept the good and reinvented the bad. Might give DMC3 a run for its money then.
Well, the good news is that the worst is over. DMC3 and DMC4 are great. The bad news is that the memories of going through DMC2 will stick with you forever 😅
@dm8in The second half with dante is just unfinished, some enemies aren't designed for him, his levels have annoying gimmicks like those flowers that spawn randomly to kill your progress, fight the same bosses on the same locations (at least dmc1 had the decency of changing locations each time you fought bosses again), The Savior Fight, the final boss rush being the same bosses on the same locations in between the lame dice minigame, and so on. That's just what I remember, I haven't played the main campaign for a while now, I mostly do bloody palace since the combat is impeccable.
@dm8in Fair enough, by know I know how to handle enemies with dante but when I first played it, fausts, the dogs, the plant thingies that attach to enemies, the shark things, and the blitz, all of them were awful, now they are just a nuisance, they usually have straight forward counters with nero but with dante ehhh, it's not that his moves don't work against them, cause there's still ways to dealing with them, they are just clearly design with nero in mind and not Dante. They are not as bad as the worst enemies in 3, they are just annoying.
@dm8in Yeah, the blittz is a big example of that, at first he might be annoying but once you figure him out you can style on him unlike those gimmicky enemies in 3 😣
I just realized two things. First, even Capcom hates this game, cause in DMC 5 there's a "History of DMC" you can select from the title screen to get caught up on the 4 games before, and they skipped over DMC 2, they mentioned it for like 3 seconds and moved on The second thing I realized is I'm the 69th comment
Dunno if I'm misremembering or not but the reason why DMC 2 is so horrifically bad is because it was developed in less than half a year, I don't remember exactly but I think it was like 4 months, so yea, the game didn't have the necessary time to cook. If you think about its kinda amazing that they made a somewhat playable boring game in that short amount of time.
God, the inevitable natural progression of playing this game gets me every time I see a playthrough. I swear the mood devolves the same way every time. It starts with some spark of interest, curiosity mixed with disbelief at this factually terrible game, maybe even a naïve sense of "hey, it's not that bad." But it inevitably ends in extensive groaning an sometimes even sobbing and a lot of fast forwarding clips. Then comes the emptiness, driven only by some resolve to get this over with which is probably driven in turn by a sunk-cost fallacy. Also, yeah, the plot is barely there, and the game is so boring it makes it all seem borderline incomprehensible.
29:33 The game doesn't tell you this, but you have hold the RT button to not auto lock-on to enemies Because DMC2 is a very well designed game that is fun and satisfying 😂
Good news: you'll soon experience the best the series has to offer Bad news: you just experienced dmc 2 P.s. i would recommend a video where ai presidents rank the dmc series, trust me it is hilarious. It's by spineapple
I dunno if anyone else has said this, but in DMC 5 there's an option called "History of DMC" where you get a recap of the first 4 games, and they mentioned 2 for like 3 seconds and then moved on
The "Here's your crown" line was arguably the ONLY good line Dante has in this whole game xD And even then it was... meh? And fuck the zombie tanks and choppers, those are just bad enemy designs 101
Sadly EEEEEVERYBODY who tries this game out of curiosity does exactly what you did. Play the Dante disc once and be done which is the absolute wrong way to try this game. I'm watching this and actively suffering with you. I can feel your pain through the screen and, as an empath, I cringe and pain with you. You might need to get professional help after this one before you tackle DMC 3. It's a good game, but you'll need to rid yourself of the trauma that is DMC 2.
