- I know I've said that my cutoff for games is 1984 - this is true, EXCEPT for 49er games up through 1994, as they were my team during that era. Craig Stevens has graciously given me a TON of 49er games from 1981-94 that I will be enhancing on a regular basis going forwards. This recording was in pretty good shape, though a bit fuzzy and drab. I upscaled, sharpened, and reverted the compression of the recording using Topaz. I then adjusted the contrast a bit and brought out a fuller color overall using Resolve. Not a huge difference, but a noticable one. I love John Madden. What a terrific analyst
Yes, I agree, it takes me back to the good old days of real NFL football.
Yes he was the best and Pat was a great play by play announcer. The voices of my earlier teenager years.
Bill Walsh said to the team before they left the locker room, "I want you to remember one thing, we only have to play for two hours...They have to live here."
LMAO
Whoa, too cool
Because San Francisco was such a utopia.
@@jpowers55In those days it sure was.
@@jpowers55 it still is. Don't believe the hype. But I would expect that from someone with a ton of gullibility.
33:00 The greatest at his position EVER. Not even a close second. #80 Jerry Rice
when people try to compare him to Moss I laugh
@sollyparker3947 which is the best reaction one could give
The great thing about these older games, especially playoffs, are the memories they bring back.
I’m getting older now & my short-term memory is turning to crap but as a Niner fan in PA at this time the Playoff games & some of the MNF games really stand out. I can get a mental picture of where I was & what I was doing for just about every one of those games from this era. This game really stands out. I remember watching it on our little 13 incher on the bookshelf in the living room. I could say that about every playoff game. Whether I was upstairs or downstairs or if I was at one of my friends. Haha
And of course the Monday games that as a teenager I may have stayed up past midnight in the east & watched the whole way through. (1989 game at the Rams anybody?) 🙌🏻 👏
Thanks again, Dave !
Thanks for all the games Craig!
A reminder of just how good Jerry Rice was. And how fast as he accelerates away from the secondary on that first touchdown.
I remember this game. Thought the Bears would win for sure in that brutal cold weather. The 49ers played like it was a 60 degree day, no problem
Thank you Dave for posting this game. I remember how climatic the introductions were at the time. You could feel the intensity before the game started.
Really nice to see "old" Soldier Field, with the colonnade visible at the top of the stadium. Maybe once the Bears build their new stadium the upper decks can be torn down and Soldier Field can be reconstructed to its original look. Since it probably won't have a future as a stadium, perhaps it can be transformed into a park or some other public space. I hear the Bears are looking into building on the parking lot just to the south, so Soldier Field could become part of a huge plaza that would serve not only for game days but as a site for festivals and other large gatherings. There's a lot of potential there.

Amazing job! Thank you
Incredible.
I remember this game who was favored to win this game because the bears had a way better record than the 49ers did this season The 49ers actually struggled a lot in 1988 I have trouble believing they were favored to beat the bears who pretty much had the same team they had in 85 at this point
According to the boxscore on football reference, the Niners were favored by 2 points -- www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/198901080chi.htm
This looks amazing!!! Thank you so much. Go Niners baby!!! Sincerely, the faithful.
Thanks for posting this game, Dave. I always thought it was one of their greatest games given that they were maligned as soft, wine-sipping NoCals but went in and beat the Bears on their home turf in frigid weather. The TD to Rice at 33:00 was my most remembered moment... Thanks for the memories!
Stunning clarity 😮 Dave never ceases to amaze
Love these 49ers games! Thanks Dave.
One of my favorite victories of my favorite team growing up. This is great. Awesome work yet again. Bears fans were so ready to go back to the SB and Montana and Walsh said hold my beer!
Those 80's niner teams were just on a different level. I am a Dolphin fan but I always respected this squad.
Thanks Dave from a 49ers fan!!
Thanks Dave! Another incredible job well done
Manna from heaven for this Niners fan 😁
Nails on a chalkboard for this Bengals fan. 🤣
Thanks Dave.
Looks awesome! And I would not expect any less.. I’m not sure if you’d call it subtle! Haha. you have really brought life & sharpened up the picture from my copy immensely! Cheers!
The day Bear Weather died... Montana and Rice shredded the cold and the Bears defense...
man this was the prime of NFL Football....the best days ever....miss it
This AMAZING! Thank you for creating this masterpiece! looks amazing! and what a great game!
THANKS MAN!!! This will be another awesome update to my 49ers archives!!! I make sure to rewatch this gem every Christmas, so I can't wait to so so again wit this edition!!! 49ers forever!!!
Man, I miss those guys (Madden & Summerall)...
Madden: "...tough guys don't wear long underwear" (25:53)
Thank you Dave!
Legend once again.
Dave so glad that you put this one up! And i love ALL those 49ers games that you got! Soooo looking forward to watching them! Thank you for making them look great again!
Much improved picture quality. Also seamless edits around the commercials. Nice job on this!
All I can really add is " not Bear down but BEARS DOWN!" Thanks again Dave
This is the way football was meant to be...in a frozen Field with Madden and Summerall in the background!! Forget about dome stadiums with manicured lawns and tons of advertisements everywhere!!!
I have this game on vcr tape original copy my favorite 49ers game madden summerall awesome
"Pass caught by Jerry Rice and look out for this one."
- Pat Summerall
And that is the play and call I most remember from this game when i was a little kid
That's how Pat Summerall was. Very simplify.
Awesome, glad to see you go a little past 84 with this game. The 49ers of this era were extremely fun to watch.
To put this game in context, the Bears were missing DE Richard Dent, who absolutely & completely dominated the 'niners during their week 8 MNF matchup. The flying sack anyone? Sean Smith started in Dent's place. Smith was serviceable, but over Dent?? I think not. Bears HOF Jimbo Covert started only 8 games that year with a severe left shoulder & back injury. It was said Covert was unable to raise his left arm over his head. Covert started the game despite being in excruciating pain, which the 'niners used to their advantage. of his was on the operating table immediately after the game. Both Bears QB's were injured, Mike Tomczak was dealing with a separated shoulder for over the last 3-4 games of the season, which is the only reason a battered, ailing McMahon started the game. Truth be told McMahon had no business playing, but he was the "healthier" of the 2 theQB's. If you notice, McMahon's throws were short and off to the left. His injury made him ineffective and Tomczak, with his battered shoulder came into the game late in relief. Tomczak was equally ineffective and if I remember correctly he had shoulder surgery immediately after the season was over...
SO...every NFL team is ailing by the end of the season...what team WOULDN'T use these injuries to their advantage.
Here's my opinion...the Bears were a shadow of their former selves and decimated by injuries. Their starting QB's were beat to hell, they were missing 1 HOF defensive end & had one HOF left tackle gutting out an injury that would later end his career...
This was NOT the glorious victory some have made out it to be. Most Bears fans including me, believed the Bears got lucky and didn't belong in or deserve to be in the NFC championship game! Most of us mocked at the Bears chances of another Super Bowl. The proper matchup should've been the Eagles & the 'niners. Even as a lifelong Bears fan, I STILL believe that the officials stole that game from the Eagles. With that being the case, perhaps the 49ers got lucky too!
Nah….the Bears were still better than Philly. As far as the Niners being lucky? I think they still would have won if Dent played. They starting clicking the last 5 weeks of the season and it carried over thru the playoffs. At one point they were 6-5 and everyone was pretty much counting them out.
Mike Tomczak reinjured his shoulder during the Fog bowl game that's why Jim McMahon got the start for the NFC Championship game.
You have a great memory, Bears fan here..Walter Payton was my mom's baby brother, Walter actually passed away while my mother was holding him in her arms when him and Aunt Connie had that house in South Barrington.. I'll never forget that😑...
McMahon’s last game as a Bear. Traded to SD during training camp of ‘89 for a first rounder. I believe the pick ended up being Trace Armstrong. It could’ve been Donnell Woolford. Those were the Bears first round picks that year
Stay salty.
You want to make any more excuses? The Niners were the best regardless of your projections.
They won the next two super bowls, were labeled "the Team of the 80's".
Cope, Mr Sour Grapes!
This is brilliant. There are a few videos of this game on here but nowhere near this good. Outstanding quality. One of my favorite 49ers games of all time with so many great Madden Summerall quotes.
Dave, thank you for your service. Those of us who have followed you for years know this is often thankless work. You go above and beyond.
You're welcome! And thanks for being one of the long-term fans :)

@@CliffClavinUSPS Put the play speed up to 1.5X, and you get the sound my lawnmower makes after the second yank of the pull cord.
Man, Anderson was a special back from ‘87-‘91. Carried those offenses. Really started to slow down in ‘92. Entered Ditka’s doghouse and had a very subpar year in Wannstedt’s first year, 1993
No one expected the 49ers to win that day. Great game.
I did. The Bears were vastly overrated. The Las Vegas line was pick 'em
@@bnegs521 I think the Bears were 14-2 that season and the 49ers 10-6 if I remember correctly.
No, the Bears were favored by 1.5. The line still said that Vegas thought SF was the better team
@@petes6521 12-4.
Great game! Remember watching it from home in San Jose Bay Area and thinking wow! Niners really went into the frozen tundra and pulled off an amazing victory against a great team! Remember seeing the sweat freezing on the players faces
This was hardly a "great" Bears team
Thanks for the enhanced production.
Niners gave the Bears a thorough beat down.
I had to work that day (and had no VCR) so I missed the game. Thanks for posting. :)
Great 80s and 90s football is my favorite there is alot of 80s 90 s Nfl games on youtube that look like crap that need your restoration so it'll be nice to see some of those games get the dave volsky treatment
Two bad punts by Wagner of 12 and 27 yards changed everything. Then the missed tackles on the Rice TD and now you’re finished.
One of my favorite games ever. I grew up in the Bay Area and I remember the whole country saying the Niners were going to go into cold and snowy Chicago and get their asses whipped. Not only did we win but we whipped their ass.
It was cold but not snowy
Thank you, Dave. I have a copy of this game, but your enhanced version is so much better. 49ers is my favourite team, and I collect their games.
Dave iv said this before and I’m going to say the same thing I absolutely love watching these classic football games! One more thing I really appreciate all the Seattle Seahawks vintage games! I now you had mentioned that you don’t go past 1984 I wish there was a way I could see my first NFL game it was back in 1996 when the Seahawks where in Arizona back when the cardinals where called the Phoenix cardinals the game was played at the university of ASU.
Thanks Chad. Yeah sorry, 1996 is way outside of my range :)
I was 14 years old, and it was a tough loss. Everyone at the time knew this was the real Superbowl game. No way the AFC was gonna beat the 49ers or the Bears.
Thanks for another great upload!!
Awesome quality..Once again man! I was 18 watching this..I remember being pretty confident that Bears were goin to win..Man what a dominant 49er win..Being a skins fan..We were still Champs! For 2 more weeks 😂
The Bears did nothing in this game as the home team totally overwhelmed. Walk in the park to the Super Bowl
Dave love, love this!! Was a Redskin fan in the 80s but loved Joe Montana and respected the Niners. Keep posting all the 80s Niner games. Their offensive football led by the great Bill Walsh was truly beautiful football to watch. Would love to see the 87 Darrell Green divisional playoff game vs the Bears. 😉
Washington lucked out such big time in ‘87. There was no reason the Niners should have lost to Minnesota in the divisional. They met Minnesota again in the 88 and 89 divisional with pretty much the same teams and the Niners won 34-9 and 41-13. In ‘87 the Niners would have crushed the Skins
Thanks Dave this is amazing I finally see a classic game I saw in first place The bears beat sf on Monday earlier that year I was scared
Plus I love this version of Soilder Field. Not that garbage they have now. They should’ve never renovated the way they did now
59:55 😮😮 John would know this information how?? Pat was speechless.
😂😂😂
Damn you can feel the cold especially in the second half.
They kicked the crap out of Chicago.
Great post!
Finally some late-80s uploads. Keep it up Dave!
As I've mentioned, 1984 is still my cutoff, except for Niner games up through '94
Would love to get a throwback jersey with pockets like Montana
Quintessential Madden starting at 22:05 while describing Ronnie Lott. Amazing
Starting at 22:00. Sorry
thanks for posting. Bears fan. nail in the coffin for the McMahon era Bears. Bear weather, home field, McMahon at qb. Why couldn’t Halas have sold the Bears to Debartolo? at least there was one super bowl win.
Thoroughly enjoying this,from a Patriots fan. 1:57:39
The Niner defense played more like the Bear defense on this day.
The 49ers had one of their two finest games in this match up. Clearly their most dominant post season win next to the blow out of the Broncos in the SB.
They had a lot of good ones. The superbowl against the dolphins and the championship against the rams the following year were also compelling. But I agree that this ranks at the top. Just complete domination of a very good opponent. Going on the road, in the cold, and executing a winning game plan.
@tylerm5774 Those were great dominate wins. I thought the 49ers defense was particularly physical against the bears that day. Especially in the cold. They hit really hard that game.
33:01…..Montana never got enough credit for his arm strenght. That throw in these conditions takes a lot of arm strenght.
33:08 - Montana to Rice TD
57:00 - Montana to Rice TD
1:29:46 - Montana to Frank TD
1:58:46 - Rathman TD
Keena Turner only got one foot back in bounds recovering that fumble, needed both.... early in game.
As a Saints fan, would love to see some of the Saints-49ers battles. 49ers won most of them obviously, but there was some great battles, especially when Mora coached the Saints.
Holy crap. I was a Niner fan back then, but I just checked the Saint games you speak of and I had no memory of there being THAT many close games. Wow. I'll see what I can do.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 I remember many...that the Niners usually won. The 1990 MNF wk 1 game comes to mind. Great Saints D all game undone by awful Saints QB play. There's the Morten Andersen missed game winning kick in 87. The Saints 2 pt win later in 87. Both 92 games that Niners won late. The Saints upset in late 1990 was a highlight as a fan for me.
I was in 3rd grade watching this game in the kitchen of my grandmother’s apartment. Can’t remember what I ate Monday, but I remember this vividly. My friends and I were convinced SF couldn’t come to our town and win in “Bear Weather”. Well, we were wrong. We got out ass kicked ny 2 hall of famers on offense and an underrated defense. McMahon and the rest of our offense was terrible.
What a great quality video. Far superior than that of the 13” in my grandma’s apartment. RIP grandma
Oh my Dave a late 80’s NFL game! I know you said that you didn’t do games after 1984 but please your cut off should be 1994. Anything after that, that is when the NFL turned to shit. Great work as always my friend.
1984 is still my cutoff, except for Niner games through 1994, as they were my team back then.
The first play on the 49ers drive , the roger craig would have been a 15 yard penalty in todays nfl
Bears were missing a few big factors ..1# big time possession WR (they always seemed to go for speed guys mostly) 2# a true shut down corner say like a Everson Walls type guy and of course not having Richard Dent on the pass rush was big loss that day
All true. Subsequently in ‘89, they chose Donnell Woolford in the first round. They also lacked playmakers on offense. The QB ply was far less than stellar. Although Ditka was a pretty good coach, he was often out coached in big playoff games after the SB win, and often lacked creativity on offense
Back in these days, during the regular season the 49ers were the best road team in the NFL by far. Road games in the playoffs were an entirely different matter, however. During his career as a 49er, Montana was only 1-3 in road playoff games. Young was 0-3. So, in road playoff games during the Montana and Young eras, the 49ers were an abysmal 1-6 overall. That is rather disturbing.
Is it too late to root for the Bears?
You would have lost either way
I absolutely loved the 49ers during the 80's. Sort of lost my love for the organization after the way they treated Montana at the end. Regardless, 84-94 is the golden age of NFL football, never been as great since. I think you should ditch the 1984 cutoff, honestly. None of us would complain :) I'd love to see the early Marino and Elway days, late 80's early 90's NFC East, Run and Shoot Houston Oilers... so many great teams and players in that era.
Agree with you on the Niners - they were my team from 83-94. I have ZERO interest in any other football past 1984. As it is I have over 600 games to work on, which I'll never be able to finish.
When football was football...from broadcasters to players....soooo unlike today's NFL
Not a popular opinion, but I think John Madden was massively overrated as a color analyst. But I'll say this: He had a firm grasp of the obvious.
I think he was overrated. I am not sure massively overrated
I got tired of Madden too. Especially his enthusiasm for the Redskins. I recently re watched the beat down the Raiders laid on the Redskins in the Super Bowl in January of 84. Madden was in shock when his favorite team got a thorough ass kicking. He wasn't excited at the end of that broadcast
You'd think Madden would've been more a fan of the Raiders.
Dave's done it again!🥷
football was never the same after the NFC left CBS for FOX
Game was played on Jan. 8, 1989 (Sun.)
Oh I thought it was a Tuesday
@BennyRobinson No, game was played on Sun., January 8, 1989
Gosh I miss Pat Summeral and John Madden.😢
I've always liked the Bears vs 49ers rivalry games.
I thought that the 49ers have a rivalry with the Packers.
@@Rickman897 They do.
Hey Dave! Wonderful work, as usual. Quick question: are you going to release any Super Bowls?
If you mean 49er Super Bowls, I've already posted XIX. All the others (XVI, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX) I believe would be blocked for viewing because of copyright since either the full games or portions of them are posted on either the main NFL UA-cam channel or its offshoot 'NFL Throwback'.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Thanks for the reply. What about other the Super Bowls (not just those with the 49ers)?
I've posted enhancements of IV, V, VIII, IX, XIII, and XIX over the past several months. That's pretty much the only ones I can do that won't get blocked.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Thanks for the reply! Last question: SB XVII is not possible, either?
It might be, but I don't have a copy of that game to work on.
Al Harris got a sack in this game and played well. Harris and Todd Bell missed the 1985 season due to holdouts and the Mccaskeys screwing them over. Todd Bell was a 1984 All Pro. That cost both millions in royalties.
👍
GO 49ERS! 😎
Thank you so much! Do you have Super Bowl XXIV pregame show of CBS?
I do not.

I hope you have a bunch of NBC 49er games
I have a copy of nearly every 49er game from 81-94 now, NBC, CBS, ABC. The recordings vary wildly in terms of quality though. Some are ripe for enhancement purposes while others are pretty much garbage and I wouldn't bother with.
33:07 What was Mike Richardson and Todd Kroom thinking? I can understand Jerry Rice making the catch, but that was a sloppy attempt at making a tackle.
If you happen to have the 1986 NFC Playoff game Redskins at Bears 1/3/87, please post it. With the NFL Today pregame show if you have it especially.
My cutoff is 1984 for all teams except the Niners up through 1994.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673Dave you need to hire someone to do the 1985 to current era. 🤔
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673Dave, why is the Jets Dolphins 1982 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP impossible to find? Ty
It isn't that it is impossible to find (I have a copy) - it's that if anyone tries to upload it to UA-cam it gets blocked for viewing because of copyright.
@@brianbachmeier34 I need to hire someone?? Dude, I do this as a HOBBY. I don't make one frickin' cent off any of my work. And I have NO interest in the NFL after 1984, EXCEPT for Niner games up to 1994. I OWN ZERO non-Niner games after '84. It should have been Cunningham for a QUICK SIX
I remember watching this the 49ers took the bears TO SCHOOL!!!!!!
Hey do you have 1983 Packers vs oilers game Archie Manning last great game.
I do, but unfortunately it gets blocked for viewing because of copyright if one tries to upload it.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Do you know why for that game in particular? It would seem like all NFL games would be blocked or none.
It would be because the 'NFL Throwback' channel has a condensed highlight version of the broadcast posted. That channel is run by the NFL. A broadcast will usually be blocked if an amateur such as me tries to upload it if any part of that broadcast is already uploaded on either 'NFL Throwback' or the main NFL UA-cam channel.

1/8/89 20 degrees, wind 29 mph, wind chill 2 degrees

At this point in time, where is ‘The Fridge’? Was he traded or on IR?
He only played in 3 games in '88, so guessing he was injured.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Thanks, Dave!
Yeah Fridge was IR
Possible for 60fps?
I stopped rendering at 60fps because it literally took 3.45 times longer to do. In this case that would be about 10 hours of processing time versus about 3. I don't make a dime off this stuff and my power bill has already substantially increased due to all the processing, so it was a no-brainer for me. Plus I realized that there wasn't a significant increase in quality outputting 60fps versus 30, so that was another reason. No need to tax my resources, time, and money for something not really needed.
Was this colder than the ICE Bowl in ‘67?
Actually not even close :) According to the football reference boxscores, the Ice Bowl was -15 degrees, 15 mph wind, -23 wind chill, while the 1988 game was 20 degress, 29 mph wind, 2 degree wind chill. So for as cold as Chicago looked that day, Green Bay was about 30-35 degrees COLDER if you can believe that.
