- This upper division course will provide a practical overview of the processes for creating 2D character assets for games. Students will create 2D layer-based characters/elements built upon desired performance tasks and outcomes within a defined game structure. Using lecture and lab, participants will evolve their skills in exporting their layered character art and creating flexible rigs, extensively animating and finally exporting these character assets for basic integration into a game engine. Project assignments will involve creation of a brief personal game document, design and creation of multiple views of the character/asset to be animated, practical breakdown of the character into layers for successful exporting and animation. Character layers will be built and skeletal-rigged onto 2D mesh surfaces in SPINE, animated, and exported into Unity game engine. We'll practice game language, develop art that creatively exploits technical limitations and abilities inherent in the native software and in optimized asset creation for efficient playback in-game.
