    Use dupli color automotive paint at a local auto parts store. It dries fast is glossy, and has matte/satin too. Lots of colors. Last time I looked they had at least 35+ different colors and more available for order. My local O'Riellys also makes up custom colors , some of them can be put in an aerosol can. Then you can have unlimited colors. Cheers,

    This is a wonderful concise and to the point video! Well done! Especially the emphasis on not putting on the paint too thick! Very important I can say from 1st hand experience. :( And the emphasis on Do Not Rush! Spraying with a can, the nozzle makes all the difference. Some spray cans come with nozzels that dunk an enormous amount of paint on your guitar right away. Make sure you have a nozzle on the can that gives you the right kind of steady soft spray.
    And a beautiful job on that bass by the way!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому +1

      Marjoline Thanks, I appreciate it. And yes - find cans that don't dump paint onto your guitar. The Canbrush ones worked quite well until it starts losing pressure - so always start with fresh cans!

      Well, you could be extremely careful and use some kind of tape and outline it with something like an exacto knife. Then again there's also decals which work as well.

    I've got a question for you Ninh Ly. My guitar has a neck-through with a binding (ESP Ltd M-1000). I'd love to paint my guitar, but I'm afraid about the binding on the neck. Just really don't know what to do with it and don't want to destroy it. If I was to paint it, I must sand the whole guitar with the neck and binding is on the neck. What should I do? Some steps or advices? What spray do you use for painting and coating? Great video by the way:)

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому +7

      Hey, thanks for checking me out!
      Firstly, thank you for the kind comments. Secondly, you play guitar waaay better than I do!
      To answer your question: you're in for a rough time, but there are three methods:
      1) Sand and paint the guitar as normal, but then scrape back the binding before you apply the final clear coat (there are several videos on UA-cam telling you how to scrape back bindings).
      2) Tape the binding with several layers of high quality masking tape (I think they call it 'plating tape'). You'll be spending quite some time covering all the bindings exactly and like I said, you'll definitely need several layers. Do NOT use the typical hardware store masking tape, that stuff sucks.
      3) Remove the binding with a heat gun, sand and spray, then glue it back on (definitely not for the faint hearted).
      But to be honest my friend, you have one hell of an expensive guitar and I would strongly consider letting a professional do it for you. I know at this jolly time of year that money is tight, and if you had a cheapo guitar, I'd say 'go nuts'. I personally wouldn't risk it with a nice guitar like yours, but that's just me.
      Hope that helps?

    • @ParanormalGuitarChannel
      @ParanormalGuitarChannel 9 років тому +4

      Hell yeah man! Thanks for your quick response - you're faster than Usain Bolt! :D Well yes, actually it helped a lot:)
      I think that you're absolutely right about my guitar and I feel the same. It was some of mine theoretical questions, especially about the binding stuff:D I will consider buying a cheap guitar in the near future and go nuts with it for sure. In my guitar I would buy only a brass block for the floyd rose to get more sustain and change the pickup, EMG-81 for EMG-85 in the neck position. The big brass block upgrade is expensive and I'm thinking about ordering it from a locksmith.
      Make more videos about guitars man, a lot more than now:D Your videos are so good and pleasant to watch. Not boring for sure. Thanks for your words and keep up the good work!:)

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому +3

      Paranormal Guitar Channel
      Yeah, best to either take it to a professional or not risk it. It's a REALLY nice guitar you have :)
      I've always bought cheap guitars as I suck at electric guitar (but can play electric bass).
      It also means that I don't get scared of trashing these things. I've toyed around with Floyd Roses and you're right to go with a brass block. I've had a cheapo Chinese knock off made with pot metal (that had no sustain AND no tone!), and I fitted a steel one to a friends' guitar that worked quite well. But brass is best and I'm sure a metal worker would make you one for about a fifth of the price.
      I was going to do another video: "How to upgrade your guitar electronics & pickups. Pro sound, low budget!", but have been pre-occupied with other projects. But yes, I'll try and make more guitar videos!
      Thanks very much once again, your kind words give me encouragement to make more of these things! Be sure to share this video! :)

    Thanks!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому +2

      Jake Martin If you don't make any mistakes and don't over-spray it, a large can for each stage will do. Because I had to respray the guitar, I had to use double the amount of primer and buy a new colour. Other than that, it should be one can per stage. Hope that helps? Hey man! Thank you so much for your video. Tbh, it's one of the most comprehensive HowTo videos out there for painting guitars.
    I do have a few questions though. Even though the paint I used was the Dulux Duramax Gloss yellow (In fact, I used Duramax for the primer and clear coat too), it still only came up a matte sort of colour. I'm not all that disappointed with this, but for future projects, it would be nice to know why it came out this way. Have you come across this issue before? Do you have any idea how to fix it?
    Again, thank you so much for the video :)

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  8 років тому +1

      +SeeYouSpaceCorgi You're welcome dude, I'm glad you've commented on this video. To answer your question: I was aware that Duramax was tough performance paint that dried like a matte finish? You can fix this issue by spraying layers of automotive clearcoat over it (or polyurethane), wet sanding and buffing to a mirror finish. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

    • @spacecorgi3074
      @spacecorgi3074 8 років тому +1

      +Ninh Ly I'm not entirely sure :( Even on the site it specifies that that particular colour is a gloss finish. I remember that in places that had a heavier coating on it were a bit glossy before I sanded it down, but I just sanded them down anyway. I'm trying to find out if the Duramax clear coat is polyurethane, but if not I'll find a specific brand. Thanks so much Ninh! Subscribed for sure!

    Thanks Ninh. I am in the painting stages of my Hot Shots commemorative guitar and the sanding part on the clear coat really helps as I do not want to see the bumps. Also, it looks like the waxing part is just the same as polishing headlights. I bet a polishing kit at the auto parts store would supply everything one would need.

    I learned (the hard way) that the finish of some cheaper guitars makes up a note-worthy portion of the weight (and thus balance as it hangs from the strap), so be careful about sanding to bare wood. It seems unnecessary anyway, if all you're doing is changing the color.

    • @tuberuser377
      @tuberuser377 2 роки тому +1

      You seem to know a thing or two about this so if you don’t mind I’ve gotta question, if I wanted to change only the color on my guitar could I just apply the new paint over the existing paint job or should I sand it down first?

    • @ruthlessadmin
      @ruthlessadmin 2 роки тому +1

      @@tuberuser377 I really don't have a lot of experience beyond that first fail, but if I were to do another one, I'd just rough up the surface with a relatively fine grain sandpaper, then lay down a few coats of a very opaque primer, then lay down a few coats of paint, and finally seal it with something (I'm not sure what product would be good for that). Good luck!

    Great video! Very concise and easy to follow. You didn't talk about what did you do to the guitar headstock, though. How did you paint it and kept the yamaha logo? You should do a video on this kind of parts, as they are more difficult to paint.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому

      cesarronalding Believe it or not, the headstock was already silver and in good condition, so I sprayed the candy colour over the top and the Yamaha logo showed through. Just in case it didn't though, I had a spare set of Yamaha decals made up. Thanks for the compliments on this video - be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

    Hello Ninh, how's it going?! I saw you do your clear red Yamaha about oooo, eight months ago..? That paint job on your bass is first class mate, especially when you explain that you had to rescue her, nice one. I've not done a Straguar in the end, but a fairly heavily altered Strat. I'm not finished yet, its the lacquer next...:-/ (Which is how I arrived here). Wish me luck please! She is Electric Orange, the colour Focus ST's were when they first came out. All the pics so far are on google+ (unless you avoid that like the plague, its all fairly new to me so I'm allowed a bit of leeway I think! (&, I'm enjoying leaving posts that by the end, the reader needs counseling, or a drink)), I'm afraid I'm lacking the technology and skills to do a video that anyone would want to watch... Well done man, again, a concise video, and a wicked result. :-)) Cheers Ninh, Mick.

    What make is the yellow paint you're using? How is the finish bearing up in the months since you did the job? Not all spray paint is created equal.

    Good job! On preparing by not entirely removing the original paint but just sanding it to give a good key, it is common for a metallic topcoat to get a silver undercoat. So, in your particular case, this probably was the way you would go anyway? Thanks for letting us see it.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  6 років тому

      Pretty much, yeah.
      I didn't have to do much undercoating for this one - the metallic silver on a silver guitar went on with just one or two coats.
      Then the candy yellow only took two or three coats max.
      Will have to do another guitar soon.

    Oh right I saw a video with disconnecting the wiring I have subscribed I may have a go am not sure yet did you use a psint stripper to remove the paint to bare wood I have tip for you what the old french polishers use to use if you have dents rather using filler on bare wood you use wet cloth over the dent and get and iron and the heat from the iron creates steam and grain of the wood will rise above the surface so you then just sand it back ok thanks for all your help steve

    Great video! You said in the beginning that you perfectly ruined other guitars before. I think I did the same (and uploaded the big accident). ^^ It's pretty hard in my opinion, but by making mistakes I'm sure you can improve your spraying technique (sanding as well) as soon as you don't give up too early. I'd the impression that it could have been better when I sanded each coat of colour before i applied the next one (with letting it dry for at least 2 days) ... not sure if this is completely wrong. A lot of different advices here on UA-cam. But your explanation seems to be pretty true (and good). Thanks for that!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  8 років тому

      +Carl's Creative Channel Cool, thanks Carl! Yeah there's a lot of people who would sand after every coat, but I find that a) that's FAR too time consuming and b) you can still mess it up, even if you do that!. But each to their own, like you said, sometimes you have to make mistakes to find the way that works for you. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
