Attack from Behind in Self Defense? | Two Methods

  • We were discussing free shots and most of the martial artists and combat athletes I know actually don't have something ready to go for this scenario. Truthfully, it's not one that comes up very often if we are strictly talking about legal self defense or defense of others, but there are some scenarios where someone would be legally and morally justified in attacking someone from behind.
    Once again, the laws where you live and the circumstances surrounding the incident matter very much so make sure you've considered your actions carefully.

    Question for Viewers: Can you think of any other scenarios besides defense of others where attacking someone from behind is viable?

      @@hard2hurt To be fair, I'd wager that nothing you do "guarantees" you anything. Heck, I've even heard you say things similar like, "What if I could teach you a technique that worked straight up 60% of the time? That would be amazing, right!?" Situations where another person is at risk are always tricky to gauge, and you kind of have to weigh each on their merits. Does the guy have a pin across the neck and an underhook on the victim when you drag them to the ground? Then that victim is coming with you. Now a concern to figure out while continuing the engagement. Does the person instinctively duck out under the overhook when you try for the choke and pull the victim into you before shoving both of you into the wall once he's clear? Do they shoulder roll forward enough with the hook punch as you come in to make you land it straight on the vic's face instead of theirs? There's a good many techs that work from the back (like even an ol' fashioned sit out that just rocks them back onto their noggin' pretty rapidly), but that might be a bad look if they've already got their hooks in the vic really well. Even the whole "why you're there" thing matters. Are you doing bodyguard work? If so, if the vic is the primary, the name of the game is anything that removes them from the conflict and allows you to take their place in that conflict. Are you Icy Mike protecting his wife? You already have plans for this kind of thing and know that if he brings her with the both of you to the ground, it ain't exactly going to be great for him in that matchup. lol This is a GREAT vid, though. It'll make you go through your catalog of answers and see which kinds of questions they fit. Great work as always, ya'll!

    Having worked as a bouncer and concert security in my younger days I can confirm these techniques work for pulling an assailant off of someone and getting them to comply. One point I learned the hard way, make sure you drive forward with your hips and back with your shoulders, as Mike showed in his movements, once you are locked in to prevent them from hip tossing you.

    dude, you always come up with topics I haven't thought through yet. So true though, even highly trained people are used to face their enemy and have no muscle memory for such situations. I'd probably have picked a conventional technique like a side kick to ribs just to get him away from the attacked person, but only because it is one of the few things that feels natural at that position. Even thinking through this situation feels akward, obviously, since it is nothing most people ever practice for.

    The amount of times i've gotten in situations at my line of work(8+ years, avg of 2-3 combative incidents a week) and used that quick half choke and utilized my body weight and leverage to subdue is insane. Seeing it in a video like this is refreshing. I find myself going that half choke from a face to face most times and turn to a hip toss and lock in the choke. Mind you i've never had formal training just taught myself strangely enough from videos sort of like these and learned the best ways naturally (through muscle memory) to avoid damage, most of the time I rely on a mix of adrenaline and diversionary tactics to minimize the injuries possible to all parties involved.

    I was right about this video and as a security guard it was exactly why I was interested, protecting others. I have nearly been in a few scenarios where I would have had to have helped, two while off shift but in uniform, fortunately those situations all resolved themselves before I had to. They are what finally prompted me to get back into martial arts, and good fundamentals / combat sports this time, as I wasn't 100% sure what I was thinking I would have done would a) work or b) I could even pull off anymore if so.
    Also for the choke. As a smaller guy I tried it on my BOB (it's 4am and I'm off work and bored with no one to beat up) and getting your head against the back of the neck/head definitely helps and seems to make it less likely of getting a rear headbutt, if that's a thing to be worried about. However at the tallest setting (6-7ft ish monster) I had to basically jump up and/or climb on the body using my arm that is going to drive into the back to grab the shoulder/collarbone before setting up the other arm for a choke, and drive my hip in to set up, but I felt very vulnerable dangling like that, though I could hook I am wondering if that's the best plan vs someone that tall as I'd be worried about being squashed like a bug from them in a standing position. That or stand on the base to set up; granted I would kick someone's leg from behind or climb them to set up if I had to and knew it could really work instead of the other way.

    This lever choke was what Khabib used to finish Connor, as explained by Joe Rogan. He didn’t have the arm all the way under the chin but didn’t matter because it still functions as a choke. People called it a jaw crush or neck crank and said Connor tapped fast but Joe said it still chokes because of that other elbow acting as a lever. Wicked.

    Once, in a bar fight(my one and only bar fight experience), after I dropped my “opponent”, I saw my friend got pushed to the corner and pounded by two guys, I walk up and did a palm heel strike to the back of the ear, worked like a charm, that wasn’t a knockout, but that guy totally stopped and went on his knee, then I thrown a cross to the other guy’s chin from his 3, he hold on wall and stopped fighting, then I just called the cop.
    Too me, palm heel strike has a shorter reach when I’m facing someone, but is just so easy and powerful when I’m behind someone, since reach doesn’t really matter anymore.

    I was a young man of 50 years when I was jumped from behind walking to a bus stop in a very rough part of downtown St. Louis. I am an old freestyle wrestler and I was able to step behind the much bigger, younger and stronger assailant before he could lock a choke and it fell into a headlock which was easily slipped giving me complete back control as I took him to the ground. I then just talked to the guy as I kept him contained, then gave him a couple bucks for a meal and caught my bus. So in a street encounter you never when or how events will unfold.

    Why would you need to land with your knuckles in this case. I know it's horrible to say this but... we have plenty of evidence that forearm hits across the chin work, from CCTV of the most common type of surprise knockout assault. I don't think there's much evidence suggesting you could land harder with your knuckles than what people already do instinctively.

    Speaking from Jujitsu, you have just given him breathing room by letting him into the corner or your elbow. That way you’ll have to use more strength. When you bring your forearm across his neck, you stop midway so your arm is straight across his neck. Then you just rotate your arm to choke him out. It requires no strength and he goes out much faster.

    I think a Jiu-Jitsu nerd would call that a fulcrum choke. It's a variant of the RNC, at least as I was taught.
    If you don't get the full crook of your elbow around their neck the Gable grip can be used to apply pressure to their throat with the side of your hand. They WILL stop what they are doing if you pressure their throat in this way. My god, it is painful.

    I don't know about other states but in Minnesota your rights and responsibilities for self-defense apply to anyone else around you who could be hurt as well. Like if I can get away I'm supposed too, but if there are others that can't get away I can help them. Any restrictions on that is in my opinion and probably in fact unconstitutional

    I snuck attack some one before in a mental hospital in my younger crazier days. Guy I was having problems with I creeped up behind him got him in a simple forearm choke and just fell back taking him down with me. He struggled and threw a few punches to the top of my head, didn't do anything because they were just arm swings and had no power.
    So I realized I needed to tuck my head down now he couldn't do anything and I just held him there until the hospital staff came running up and separated us.
    Was a state hospital and some of the guys in there were pretty crazy and could become violent. So fights we're common place in there.

    I was having an argument with someone in 2016 when a random passer-by put me in the same hold as 0:53 i remember counting 6 seconds as i was dragged backwards in this hold before i woke up minutes later about 20 metres away from the arguement, this sleeper hold works.

    I like how the strike can set the choke up. I would most likely try to go straight from one to the other. Im also corrections so... maybe i think different.

    This choke technique looks like a sibling to Sangga Maut from silat. Its usually initiated by a parry (defensive) but Ive tried it as an offensive move initiated by "clinching" the guard of my buddy before swivelling to their backs. But theyre strikers so it may be a bit weird for them to be grabbed.

    Quick question what do you think of fightsmart trav ? Me I like his approach but it could be my lack of understanding or experience in the fight game . So I know I really like your videos too and would like an educated approach on other systems out there . Ok thank you for your time . stay healthy.

    OKAY, but what if the attacker has a KNIFE?? If you try to choke, he can just stab you.
    This week a man attacked a women with a knife and just started stabbing her and everyone was standing around in fear. How could someone assist in a situation like this? Mind you, the guy was probably 6 ft tall.

    if you have a free shot how about a shin stomp/ straight kick directly to the shins? or how about straight to the achilles tendon since it's free? those aren't as flashy, but if there's a way to mess the achilles up it's game over

    hey mike, wouldn't a liver/rib shot be a more safe way if you have a free one? i mean in the demonstration u showed, they were struggling a bit but still enough to throw you off target quite easily with a punch like you suggested because the head is a rather small target comparing it to the ribcage/stomach area. and there is also a higher chance that you miss and hit the person you actually wanted to help, most of us ain't fighters and accurate like you with your striking.

    This Gable Grip technique is awesome! But is it "legal" for MMA or grappling?

    • @hard2hurt
      @hard2hurt  4 роки тому

      Yes. It's a pretty basic element of wrestling, grappling and mma. Like day 1.

    Just my own personal anecdote, but I have once successfully applied a rear naked choke type hold on a guy significantly taller and bigger than me while standing behind him, and he was trained as a wrestler to boot. Basically he was being kind of a prick to one of the other wrestlers and I wasn't really feeling it so I used the technique to pull him away from the other guy. The caveat with my example is that obviously it wasn't a life or scenario, but still I doubt he really would've preferred that I did that to him. The point is I think one can potentially pull it off, based on my experience.

    Make video on How to defend if someone surprise attacks(punches or chokes) from behind??

    • @tprnbs
      @tprnbs 5 років тому +2

      If someone surprisingly punches you from behind hard enough you're going down (unconcious probably), when someone locks choke from behind you're going to sleep. The only real defense to back attacks is situational awereness

      Yeah defense against surprise attacks from behind is last on the list of training priorities because if you do the things higher on the list... they dont happen.

    Over here they use a piece of wood strapped to the arm and short choke from behind, it's a bad guy move here. Can you show a viable defense to getting caught unawares from a surprise choke from behind. They don't RNC, thankfully, it's usually wooden forearm against the throat with a gable grip.

    That choke + elbow in the back is actually from aikido (iriminage) haha. I dont say aikido doesnt suck but it has some good moves... Btw i train aikido and kickboxing and have trained mma. :)

    Few years back I was at a new years party, and this guy who couldn't even sit in a chair straight was trying to get in his car and leave. My dude was between him and the car trying to get him to go inside, so I slid in like a foot behind him and decided if he threw on my friend I'd grab him. Sure enough he did and I bear hugged his waste and just picked him up, and held him there until my friends came out and restrained him until the cops came. We probably saved his life and whoever else was out driving that night. So save a life and attack the back!

  • @Psiberzerker
    @Psiberzerker 3 роки тому

    This is weird. Because I hear this argument, that spinning attacks "Won't work," because you're turning your back on the enemy. "I'll just ATTACK YOU FROM BEHIND" before you land that backfist. Right? Okay, then not only is this a valid Defense, but I'd be willing to bet it's one you've actually argued before.

    Is hitting someone is the back of the head/neck before applying the choke for a stun effect real/ better, or one of those things that's good in theory but ends up just giving you a worse choke position?
