  • Coraline ignores every warning and goes back into The Other World, where The Other Mother is happily adding mice-picked cheese to her eggs. That's totally normal!

Love this but I'll disagree with the cheese theory. I don't believe she was hiding it from her parents but instead was just placing the cheese where she would be able to keep an eye on it and maybe catch the mice when they come and get it rather than having to keep getting up to see if the cheese is still there.

I own a copy of the book and looked up the fog element for you. Before going to see the ladies, there is no mention of fog. But when she leaves their apartment to head home the book says this…
“The mist hung like blindness around the house. She walked slowly to the stairs up to her family’s flat, and then stopped and looked around. In the mist, it was a ghost-world.
In danger? thought Coraline to herself. It sounded exciting. It didn’t sound like a bad thing. Not really.”

Congratulations on the engagement! Never heard the expression “hungry as a pumpkin” I always took it as a reference to Cinderella where the coach is made out of a pumpkin. Maybe the other mother is some kind of evil fairy god mother

8:39 there have been some that said that the “other mother” can make/create food. Does the mouse bringing her the cheese verify that she can’t? So she’d have to scavenge for the buffet she serves Coraline.
I mean, it’s stuff that she eats and can taste vs simply shaping clay into something that resembles the other father etc.
Also, thanks for pointing out the love the animators had especially when she ran down the steps and stumbled. ❤️

4:22 perhaps it’s used to convey how her sleep felt. Sometimes, when you take a nap exhausted but are also either anxious or excited about something, you feel like you didn’t sleep at though you feel rested. Similar to that feeling you have when you have so many completed dreams in an afternoon nap or a night of sleep that you wake up feeling like you slept for days. Like so much time has passed in no time at all. Maybe this scene is meant to convey that feeling.
It’s important to evoke this feeling in this scene because Coraline is just about to cross the threshold from the mundane ordinary to the curious magical; and the disorienting, floating feeling of wonderment arising from time passing quickly but not at all in sleep and after waking primes the viewer to float their way into the curious magical irrationality of what happens next: Coraline finding a magicy tunnel in a little door of a living room of a house that isn’t quite home yet.
The point is to evoke the feeling of wondering at a dream mid-dreaming by capitalizing on the time-bending and disorienting power of sleep and waking from sleep.

About if Coraline gets transportet back. Speaking for her being in the real world and willingly returning, is how enthusiastic she seems about the other world. Telling her mom about the chicken she ate, being less annoyed and Whybe and not thinking twice about putting out the cheese at night. On top of that, the first thing she does when she waked up in 'the real world' is to go look at the portal and realise its closed. Perhaps the other mother is making Coraline really fight to return, therefor making her want the other world even more intensely?

Congrats on your engagment so happy for you, also caroline is ignoring all the red flag and the other father pile a lot of food on his plate like he starving or he only eats when coraline is there and the other mother when she send coraline to fetch her father she says he must be hungry as a pumpkin by now. I never heard anyone say this phrase before watching this movie

The other mother only having any power in the other world might only cound then the portal is locked. It may be, that when Coraline opened the portal, she also opened the pathway for the other mothers 'mice', the doll's powers and Coralines magical return in her sleep.

if i’m not mistaken, the book talks about a “mist” which is similar to fog. i always thought the mist was an entire other being or entity that spied on / disoriented coraline

Me personally on how I interpret Coraline going from the real world to the other world, I see it as some form of Astral projection.
The first two times she enters the other world are only after she goes to bed. Every time she goes to bed, the night light starts turning like it's transitioning us in either time or into her dream projection. And that's why I think when she "goes to sleep" in the other world, she's actually just waking up.
I don't think her physical body ever leaves the real world until the third time when she goes while fully awake in the middle of the day. That's why she can't just "sleep her way back" to the real world. Because the third time she's legitimately, physically in the other world for the first time; so therefore she has to leave physically to get out. The Astral projection visits were simply the bait to lure her into the web.
That's how I read the movie anyways lol
Oh and congrats on your engagement! I'm very happy for you!! 😁

I've never heard the phrase "hungry as a pumpkin" from anyone's mouth other than the Bel Dame, so when I first watched this movie, I just though she picked the fattest veggie she could think of. Fat equalling large-stomached, and probably with an enormous appetite. It really turned the gears in my head to see his fate later on, but in the moment, I was sadly much like Coraline, herself. "Okay, weird phrasing... Never mind, just go with it... Other-Father's probably hungry."

how i explained too myself about the radiator and minor changes is despite Coraline being trapped the other mother in her lair doesn't maintain it she spends her time in the limbo with a child so it falls into disrepair and she needs to restore it and as time passes her lair resembles the real world including the limbo because that sense that somethings off will interfere with your ability to feel comfortable enough to love and she lives off love so she maintains whatever one she is using and lets the other one decay a little was

Once this series is wrapped up, I wonder if you could do a similar analysis on a video game called What Remains of Edith Finch. I replayed it recently and noticed a lot of perplexing details i hadn't picked up on previously. While mostly linear, the game imposes very few restrictions on exploration, so it would be very interesting to see what you're able to dig up. There's also a lot of potential for analyzing the Finch family's relationship dynamics and generational trauma.
On the topic of video games, I played Coraline the video game on the Wii, and I can confirm that the motion controls make it soooo much worse.

As I rewatch your Coraline playlists my mind started going in hyper mode. Specifically, you often question if Wybie is already captured/working with the Other Mother. Wouldn’t he have to be considering there is an Other Wybie with button eyes? Furthermore, at the end of the film when Wybie is walking with his Grandmother to the garden party…doesn’t that mean that she is also caught by the Beldam as well? Considering how you discussed that Coraline never goes home, that her parents and neighbors are all creations of the Beldam even without button eyes. Because she has shown that she very clearly can trick Coraline into mimicking her own mother without the button eyes. Just checking if I am following your theories correctly? If she never goes home then everyone at the end should therefore be trapped constructs of the Beldam. Which then confused me as to why you ever pose the question of whether or not Wybie or his Grandmother are part of this. I love your theories by the way, so much fun!

Recycled animation does tend to get used a lot in movies and TV shows to save on money. I do like the idea that Coraline may not have actually made it back home at the end but I also feel like it's left up to the viewers to decided if she really did or not.

At 6:35 in the other world al the 3 windows are in line even the closet. That makes the real world show there inperfections. The second time the other room slightly change to the real world by showing us not change the boxes on the table. The shoffle are so slightly larger. Maybe to fit the beldam original height.
