In 1970 I was born to a 17 year old mother. She got kicked out if her house by her Catholic parents and I was born into a home for unwed mothers. She enrolled in college for nursing and she got up everyday and got me dressed and ready for the sitter. She rode 2 or 3 buses to get me to the sitter, in the dark and then to classes. She went to school all day without lunch because we had no money.
The government gave her just enough for a room with a kitchenette and bathroom in a run down building in a BAD neighborhood. We got government prepackaged food, and medical. Nothing extra. Here and there we had a car but the government didn't allow a car worth more than $500 and you couldn't have more than $200 in the bank or you'd lose the help from the welfare.
I went to school with my mother and sat through college classes MANY times. She minored in art and I literally sat through nude models posing as the class drew them when I was about 3 or 4. My mother did not date random men AT ALL. She never brought people into our home. She didn't use single motherhood as an excuse to be "tired" or "stressed out" and she wasn't raking "me time" on the weekends or smoking weed to relax.
She did this for years and I never saw her take a day off because she was sick or too tired to get up. On weekends she had study groups for the nursing and we spent all day at her classmate's homes where the ladies studied and the kids played. We were broke and I remember her giving me the last bread and peanut butter for dinner and not eating when the end of the month came around. I also remember when she told me Santa was fake when I was 3 because she didn't want me to feel bad that I didn't have a tree or any presents. She bought me a new stuffed animal but told me it was from her because it was all she could afford.
Now, when somebody decides they're going to give me a sob story about these "poor mothers" out here stealing to feed their kids but I see the mothers have on $300 weave and fingernails and eyelashes, driving a nice car, carrying the latest iPhone I immediately feel my blood pressure go from 0-100mph. I am NOT the one to try and bamboozle with the boo hoo stories of these baby factories robbing hardworking people.
The fucking AUDACITY of these Hefty trash bags and their benefit babies can pucker up and kiss my sparkly fresh white ass. They're lazy, they're DISGUSTING examples of motherhood, and they need to go out and get a job like every other mother out here working. The idea that they feel entitled to steal from people, in my opinion, gives me the right to call them what they are.
I feel ZERO empathy. ZERO. I lived in that situation and neither my mother or I have harmed others as a result. DO NOT USE POVERTY AS AN EXCUSE. That is a ridiculous load of shit.

@Ontheroxxwithsalt - I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but your mom sounds like a Supermom! She raised you to be strong, positive, hardworking, never taking a damned thing for granted, to be grateful for what you do have, and to be loving.
Being a strong single mom is the greatest feat in a child’s life, and your mom went above and beyond that.
I get just as fucking pissed whenever I hear “white privilege” being thrown around by black people. I NEVER had any privilege growing up. Yes, my mom’s parents paid for my younger sister and myself to go to private Catholic schools, but we didn’t have much more than that. My mom was on public assistance, and she couldn’t even afford to get me glasses, or braces for my teeth - even though she was told that I needed them. She taught us what the value of a dollar was. We had chores to do when we got home from school, but we were NOT given an allowance. Our “allowance” was having a roof over our heads, food in our stomachs, and clean clothes on our backs. We didn’t get presents, cakes or a party for our birthdays, and we only had ONE Christmas in which we were given presents (my sister ruined that for us). She taught us how to bargain shop, and to cook from scratch, and figure out how much of the ingredients needed to make multiple meals from a single batch of spaghetti gravy, chili, beef stew, etc. So, if we had to eat spaghetti for 4 nights in a row, then that’s what we ate. Now, the only thing that I absolutely and positively REFUSED to eat was split pea soup with ham. NOPE NOPE AND NOPE!!!
We’re the same age (I was born in 1970 as well), so I can somewhat relate. I can only bet that the time you spent going to classes with her, going to her study group and playing with other kids, and being together through thick and thin is something that you’ll always and forever treasure.
My mom had brought my sister and myself to her cosmetology classes, and we had to sit still and do our homework. We knew better than to act like we had no damn sense, because she’d beat our asses. It was mostly my sister that didn’t listen, but, for me, I was super shy and quiet.
Anyway, I have the very same thoughts as you; being poor does NOT give anyone the right to steal! Period! I’ve seen black, Hispanic, and Indian (not Native American) women, at the public assistance facility when my mom had to go and reapply for benefits, wearing expensive clothes, gold and diamond jewelry, nails done, hair done, driving Cadillacs, BMWs or some other expensive car, and they all had no less than 6 kids with them. Those kids would run around, messing with other people there, and the fucking screaming that those kids were doing; made my head hurt, and I was 11.
All I can say is that little mouthy girl will end up pregnant by some gang banger, living on public assistance and Section-8, and the cycle will continue. I KNEW better than to disrespect a police officer, or anyone, for that matter, that was in an authority position. My mom, God rest her soul, didn’t play around with her 2 daughters disrespecting anybody.
What I would give to have my mom back. She fought a great battle against the aggressive breast cancer for 3 years and 3 months, and she NEVER complained. She NEVER complained about being a single mom. Not once.
We lived in an apartment above a male family member, from my dad’s side, and he would be the disciplinarian of my sister and myself. I won’t go into details about that, but, because of my sister constantly pushing his buttons, we were severely abused.
I get pissed about people stealing from every store imaginable, and justifying as “reparations,” or “they’re poverty stricken, so they get a free pass.” Stealing is stealing, and people who steal should NOT be given a free pass! No matter who they are, or where they come from!!

When baby daddy shows up, they threaten to physically harm staff. So, why are test scores low in public schools?
