For designing my house, I think back to my childhood and what made me feel the most loved and at home. My grandma. So I honestly have a home that looks more like an older woman's house, but I love the coziness of it. It reminds me of happier moments in my life.

Me too! Whenever I’d be scrolling looking for inspiration the things that always jumped out reminded me of my grandparents house. At first I resisted because I didn’t want an “old lady house” - but then I realized I’m the one looking at it every day, my joy is the most important thing.

Hahahah this is hilarious because someone walked in my house and said it gives me grandma vibes. I’m like that’s great. It’s supposed to be a cozy cottage Victorian look. 😂💕

That is a nice way to look at it and I hadn't realized till now. When I think back to my childhood the clutter would make me anxious. We moved a lot and I remember being surrounded by cardboard boxes and bulky furniture. I felt happier in a home that had little furniture and we put out all our toys and would play on the floor of the living room that only had a book cabinet in it. So in my home I have tried to avoid the clutter - I have only closed storage, only two chairs at my dining table (the rest are foldable chairs), and I don't have a coffee table because I like to have space in front of my couch. I only have one small side table. This keeps me relaxed my home though it is not traditionally cozy.

My place is mostly a 1940s style and I wasn't even born until the 1950s. But I like the style and love the movies from that era. I have many magazines and catalogues from that time for reference. Cozy, warm friendly, secure.....I never liked the 'hotel' look.

    Binge episode #3
My wife (of 29.75 yrs) and I've recently purchased our dream home, and it's in stage one of a five stage/yr renovation; stage one (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, floors, interior paint) gets us moved in by February 2025 with stage five being a new roof in 2030. Almost NOTHING is coming with us from our other home - which we are keeping - but primarily because we don't really like anything we currently own and don't want it in the new space, so 95% new furnishings that we will slowly and purposefully acquire over however long it takes. Because of my art/photography background I'm leading the way in the design, with lots of welcomed input from her. It's a 1940 built farmhouse on a lakeshore. It is 1400 sqft, has wood & tile floors, wood paneled walls and either vaulted ceilings or low ceilings of 90" (7'6").
Our southern exposure (lakeside) kitchen, dining, sun, bath & master bed rooms are all spring/summer color themed due to the abundance of natural & direct light, while the living & two other bedrooms on the northern side are autumn/winter hues. Our style is early/mid 20th century (20s-50s). Blah, blah, blah. Your channel appeared in my feed and is so timely. Thank you!

Realtor here. This is one of the cruel parts of our industry that annoys me also. Buyers today have been brainwashed by HGTV and Instagram, and as a result we have a million sad beige and white homes. When my parents lived in their home in the 70s and 80s, no one renovated homes “to sell.” Buyers, then, probably because they weren’t visually brainwashed, could look at a home and have a vision (paint, maybe new appliances), and they would buy a home if it suited 80% of their needs. Now, we need the same boring beige and white from Instagram to appease many of today’s buyers. It’s a challenge to work with clients who have these expectations, so I am very picky about the buyers I work with and try to help them see a home’s potential versus excluding a great home just because it isn’t an Instagram-copycat. 😊

When I was in a money crunch many years ago I had to sell it, but my mother screamed "nooooo" and bought it "so you may inherit it agan someday". And so I have in a turnaround fashion. Aka, for anyone who's feeling intimidated by what feels like a risk or financial investment in larger, more opinionated pieces. Love your common sense in reality. Once it's painted no one cares. If they really do, hand them a brush. Blinds are hideous, I like double window treatments, a sheer behind solid panels. A fancy rod is nice, but wasted expense and totally unnecessary. Love lamps, simple is most elegant. Linen armoire? Tricolor works. Look at the setting here, window, single curtain, lovely flowers in a fluted vase, and Caroline. Simple, elegant and clutter free is the best way to go.

Awesome tips. If I may throw something out there that really helped me when we bought our first place: know that decor, and even smart use of space is a never ending process. Take your time. Relish every moment. I moved in three years ago and chose my mustard yellow bedroom curtains, but had to keep my cute, but very impractical upcycled wooden palette bed with a white limewash (to stay within budget). Who would have known that this July, I'd come across the perfect velvet bed. On sale. The exact color of my curtains??? I still wake up and sometimes smile as I think of it. Interior design isn't just stuff, it's moments, memories and choices... And its evolutive quality is what makes it so special.

She’s so right about the curtains-my girlfriend wanted blackout curtains for when she had to sleep during the day, and I really liked the natural light that came into the bedroom without curtains, but as soon as we put some up the bedroom finally felt lived in, and we had been there for 8 months already. It was so surprising how much that changed, especially since it’s our first place to ourselves. I also finally put up some christmas garland around our kitchen island to be a bit more festive this year, and it makes such a difference just…hanging something up in our house. I’m so scared of ruining the rental and losing our deposit that I just love in a boring apartment. I’m getting better at it though!

Yellow is my FAVORITE color, but too much can be overwhelming, and the wrong yellow can be a problem. So I went to my local paint store (not big box) and picked up their color combinations. I chose the one that best represented me, and painted my house accordingly. Yellow is more than an accent, but less than the main color. I also treat it as a neutral and everything that comes in has to go well with yellow. I love being in my home, and so do my people.

    • @bitchlasagna1
      @bitchlasagna1 2 роки тому +4

For me I always try and tie yellows in with oranges and light pinks. I think it sticks out like a sore thumb in contrast to very basic colors, and it’s hard to match with cool tones, so my bedroom is (generally) very sunset colored. Of course there’s certain things that aren’t gonna fit a color scheme but I’ve generally tried to tie in my yellow pieces that way and it looks nice imo but it’s also my room so I’m biased (then again I’m the only opinion that matters on my own space so I guess bias is irrelevant haha)

Sorry to sound like a know-it-all, but I’m an artist (ceramic design) and I often turn to a good old fashioned colour wheel (go on Pinterest) .See what the complimentary and contrasting colours of yellow are, see how they can be filtered into your other fixtures and furniture. You can obviously go for warmer or cooler tones depending on what you’re starting with. It’s not a total rule of thumb, but a good place to start. 😃

The one piece of design advice I ignore is, “Get rid of the blinds.” I love light. I love big windows. And blinds are the best way to finesse the amount and kind of light coming through those big windows at any time of the day. And bamboo blinds don’t cut it. Nor do big wooden slat blinds. So I have to just think, “It’s not like God is going to give me
a D+ for my home decor because I have blinds on my windows.”

Dear Caroline, I begin with Dear because I will be 59 next month and, well, that is my conditioning. I ended up watching one of your videos because I TOO am into décor, ( I know shocking) and your cadence and delivery is so similar to mine even tho I am, as stated before, old. So, yes you remind me of me..blah blah blah, but not really because you are much cooler than I ever was because I never had mine own apartment when I was young. I FINALLY did when I left a 25 year marriage and briefly then felt cool. I painted my kitchen pink, yup pink because that is what I wanted. Pink with red small appliances ( have no idea what I was thinking unless it was the crazy that comes along with ended a loooong relationship). That does come with some crazy. Holy enough of my blathering. I came here to say...you are terrific. Keep being YOURSELF. The only time I feel comfortable, ever, is when I am myself. I spent most my life resisting her (me if that was confusing) and I shall cease that BS! Be strong. Keep sending us your truth. Sincerely ( again my conditioning) Lisa

Great video. I randomly came across it and loved it. When it comes to “design style” my problem is I love them all… but they can’t all coexist harmoniously in my space. Sometimes what I love about a particular restaurant, cafe, or hotel is that it’s different from my home, and I wouldn’t necessarily want to replicate them. However, after watching your video, I think I’ll be on the lookout for things I enjoy about those spaces that may work well in my home too. Thank you!

I agree with the functionality vs design element of interior design. I acknowledge some of it as an art form, mostly serving the wealthy. For the vast majority of people, interior design has to cross paths with functionality and I’m glad that we are bringing more awareness into that. How does a space make you feel, is it realistic, is it organized, but can it hold its beauty even with a little mess?

So, we went to Menards & got one of those over the toilet cabinets that stands up & you anchor to the wall. For some bazaar reason they also had no towel bars on the walls, just 2 little hooks for hanging a towel. So we had to buy all of that as well.
