Taking requests here for videos in this series! "INTERIOR DESIGN for [XYZ persona]" For example, so far I've done: ...for hot, sexy bachelors ...for when you're depressed ...for chaotic people Love doing this series and would love to hear requests that you haven't seen anyone else really address!
Interior design for people scared of risks and obsessed with resale value. This is my dad. I was helping him with paint colours and he didn’t like anything. Too bright, too bland, too dark. I asked what his style was, he said “practical”. Every decision is about cost, practically and resale. All good things but when you don’t take design into consideration it doesn’t end up looking good.
I love this idea! Also this staged home but with something still special, so we don’t feel like we live in a Magazine while selling our home. I know we have to remove the photos of ourselves, our family photos and our quotation mark personal tchotchkes quotation mark But would love to still have something beautiful
"INTERIOR DESIGN for Animal Lovers" Problem's to overcome: - Hairs or feathers everywhere - Stinky litterboxes that need changing regularly - Food station (somehow there is always food on the wall after a meal) - Clawboards or clawed up furniture - Bed and Sleep area - Play area (all the cat and dog toy's, and sometimes even dead birds or mice, somehow allways accumulate under the livingroom couch... even if the animal is to big to go under it!)
I’d love to see that. We used to have so much nice stuff and have turned to decorating / designing around the cats. “How to have nice things that the cats can’t vomit on” 😆
I'm 57, empty nester. I decided to embrace minimalism and got rid of things I didn't love anymore. Then I felt depressed by the lack of warmth in my home. Now I am curating vintage pieces that are intentional and make me happy. Facebook marketplace is my new best friend! The main problem is I like too many styles! From true vintage/antiques, to MCM, farm house, boho! How to incorporate all my styles cohesively? Basically how to style a space/home with multiple styles. 🥴
if you love all the single pieces, they will fit together no matter what. who cares what styles other people define. if you love them all and put them together its YOUR style.
Kinda related, maybe a chapter of this video. Interior design for people who can´t decide on just one style. Just speaking from my own love for variety and wanting to have at the same time a: moroccan/english countryside/call me by your name italian stone house-inspired home. How to decide? How to incorporate those different styles? How weird is it to focus on a different theme in each room? Would appreciate your thoughts!
Yes! When you want to get it done, but there's so many core decisions to make... flooring, large expensive pieces - those foundational components! So many pins... but no decisions made.
hack for fringed rugs - I use a long strip of clear packing tape on the underside of the fringe, which really helps keep it in place! even my cat can't mess it up
@@Caroline_Winkler also for people who have pets ! For example, with 2 cats, I don't have to have a rug (because it would get destroyed) but then the rooms always feel too "bare" because there's nothing on the floor connecting the sofa to the coffee table for example
while we're waiting ... I was looking for vids like Caroline's 'you're doing home organization wrong; and I enjoyed the tips in Clutterbug's 'how to fake a clean home' (that's also the only Clutterbug vid I've watched). Very different style and personality to Caroline; but solid suggestions (and a few repeats of Caroline's suggestions from her vid).
The reason why a little bit off center decor pieces work - It works when it follows the principle of golden ratio/ Fibonacci scale, as long as the other elements are working into the same golden ratio pathway, even slightly is usually fine. It doesn't work in those instances when it's impossible to draw a fibonacci pattern parallel with other elements in the room
My favorite part of my favorite historic apartment in Denver had a little recessed phone nook?! The beauty and a perfect place for keys?! When my little grey kitty got into it!?!? Perfect.
On the paintings being off center: in filmmaking and photography, the rule is that, when you use a grid, your subject belongs in one of the four corners around the innermost square, because that's where the viewer's eye is naturally drawn. Not the center... slightly off kilter. So that's the principle you've got going here :)
@@arieldamian2248 I really wish I did 😭 almost everything I learned about composition was from either filmmaking classes or videos here on UA-cam. Ofc I can recommend the latter ✨
Interior design for : - exhausted young parents (with kid's mess) - couples with different tastes and have to compromise/balance - people with no taste (cannot tell which goes with what). This could be a whole sub-series like "retro design/ modern design/ boheme design, etc for people with no taste"
@@holosapiens I remember a TV show of couples moving in together and having to blend very different styles. They got to veto a number of items that were VERY important that they got to keep no questions, and a few "would like to keep" items as well, and they could list a few MUST go items for their partners. A designer would then compare the lists to see what could go, and kept all the important items, and usually was able to create a cohesive home.
I know you hate boho….BUT it would be super fun to see you take on the challenge of designing a boho space that you actually DO LIKE. I love your taste in everything and I’d be curious to see what parts of that aesthetic you’d end up actually liking
Oh I LOVE THIS IDEA! Very underrated here! I’ve NEVER seen a designer design something they actually hate while simultaneously trying to force themselves to find things in that category that may actually not repulse them in the end hahah And with HER dry humor in general, this would be comedic and educational GOLD!
1- design for anxious people: calming environments, space to relax, sentimental items 2- design for ADHD people - similar concept, but an environment that helps you concentrate, relax, and systems that work. Many UA-cam videos similar to this topic already re: systems for ADHD people but I'm more interested in your take from a design perspective Also center aligned is still css so you can't get away from it 😂 dev here
The interior design when you are depressed was a great one! I actually do a lot of what you had suggested. Especially when seasons change. Maybe a follow up? Or how to deal with holiday decor when you don't want to do it this year! 😢 I think of the folks who might have recently lost a loved one.
The recessing part had me howling. You are so good. So happy Wayfair saw your value...you are literally their best content and have the best comedic delivery!
you're a dang sweetheart for this. I am loving working with Wayfair, they are by far the most fun and best spirited brand I've ever had the chance to work with
Home design for people who are a kid at heart - as in, ADHD organization hacks, cubbies, and some fun color that doesn’t take itself too seriously, designed for 11 year olds but can look like Ralph Lauren Polo or a lake house cabin
Caroline, can we have INTERIOR DESIGN FOR RENTERS WITH WHITE WALLS (who can't paint them)? Your home is a lovely example of this, and I've learned so much from your renovations, but I'd love to see your best tips in a video like this one. Thanks for all of your tips along the way! ❤
I once heard someone say, "Don't be afraid to paint your walls, because they're never going to give you that deposit back anyway." I think that's wonderful advice, but that's just me; If it's going to freak you out the whole time, then it's not worth it, obviously. Sometimes I've been surprised to get the deposit back just from painting a coat of kilz over it before leaving, and other times they've simply deducted about what the primer and a couple drop cloths would've cost me. Don't forget you can also call the landlord and say you'd like to upgrade the hardware/light fixture/whatever and see what they say. Sometimes they'll say okay cool, send me the receipt and you can deduct it from your rent. Just a couple thoughts. You know your situation best of course.
I know it's an old video, but I just discovered Caroline. The best thing to do in this case is paint over with a different shade of white of your choice! I've done that , and it totally changed the ambiance for me. The landlord doesn't even need to know because they wouldn't notice! You can go from a cool white to a warm white or from that industrial beige to a bright white. Makes a difference!
haven't watched this one yet. just came to say that your advice of velvet hangers virtually changed my life. its ridiculously simple. but i am never ever annoyed about clothes falling down. they just stick to where I put them. I am an easily irritable person, and when the sh*t just falls down all the time i yell and don't pick it up because LIFE IS TOO SHORT. and later its a mess and it annoyes me even more. one simple thing really saved me lots of rage and frustration. what you do is important. never doubt it.
i love that you just flipped and edited the thumbnail for your bachelors video for this thumbnail when its a video about busy bitches like thats lowkey genius
hahaha from one busy bitch to another. I wrapped editing this at 2am last night and COULD NOT BE BOTHERED to make a new thumbnail. please pray for its success
Requests or recommendations for future programs: 1 Letting go of things you don't need and you know it! 2 Paying attention to corners (I feel corners are like little rooms within a room. Your eye seeks corners so they better say something.) 3 Locating sofa wall which is the longest wall. You don't have to place your sofa there but know where it is. It needs a large statement piece if you don't use your sofa there. 4 Using your sofa as a room divider 5 Why you must have either thrifted items, antique/vintage items, travel finds to accent and validate your decorating style. 6 Accent walls, great believer 7 Make use of every inch, especially in apartments. Bring forgotten spaces to life. Turn a closet into a "recessed area" with a chest of drawers and mirror or a bench with clothing hooks above, display shelving, etc. It will make your apartment look larger. 8 How to mix design trends like farm and contemporary which works nicely 9 Statement piece - every room must have a statement piece, preferably one that is old, recycled, upscales, reinvented, etc. 10. Difference in country styles: American vs. English, Mexican vs. Southwest, Tuscan vs. French, etc. That's it. My lists always contain 10 items, can't help it. Love your videos.
I like to quantify my time as JennaMarbles once did: “I may literally have time for something, but I don’t actually have time for it in my brain”. I can be a busy bitch with all my neuroses firing off at once and I can be equally busy with a physically busy day. Love the video!!
I’m in my nursing program for the next two years and there’s not much more I can do for my tiny apartment…but my Sims are about to have the most gorgeous home in all of Newcrest.
I put my paintings on the wall and my husband hangs them for me. I just put them up with not too much thought. One is especially asymmetrical. I'm going to mix mirrors with my art over my husband's dresser!
@princessdaaahlingamor5798 It's why I loved stickers as a kid but would get zero 'use' out of them 😭 I never could decide what to stick such a beautiful little picture onto!
You are a very wise young woman with a lot of self awareness which means your comments touch a lot of people. And you add humour into the mix, not to mention your very creative practical ideas... I am new to your videos and have enjoyed every one of them.
One of my chores as a kid was combing the fringe on a few of my parents inherited wool rugs! Laughing at you mentioning it here, I strongly echo Caroline's recommendation to rethink it. Really great video! All these tips are very applicable, creative, and useful!
hahah ok, so i will amend my prior statement. Unless you love untangling fringe OR have free small child labor available to do it for you....you may want to proceed with caution
Was that a flexbox joke at 3:42? I take time out of my busy day of watching tech nonsense to learn some interior design, and a snarky UA-cam video about the subject is just casually throwing down CSS humor? What a time to be alive
OMG you unlocked a core childhood memory of me sitting on the living-room floor of our friends house (three old Scottish sisters who lived together) and I would sit on the floor and de-tangle their rug fringe for hours… it was both satisfying and frustrating cause we would never visit long enough that I could de-tangle the whole thing!
These are great. You’re an absolute gem. How about doing an episode for someone who lives with a (minor) hoarder? Or how to incorporate heirlooms into your own style when they don’t match? Or how to pick and choose between keeping heirlooms and not letting your home become an antique store…
Oooh YES. I have a family heirloom chaise with the beautiful original 1800s fabric chartreuse jacquard fabric. It doesn’t work anywhere in my 1br apt and I don’t sit on it or allow the pets on it… So it’s always just taking up space wherever I live- but I love it 😢
Absolutely! In case she never does this video (but she should!!!), here are my tips. I live with a (minor) hoarder and my design style is Decorating with S@#t. 1) It is all in how you display it. The trick is to make it look intentional. Lean into it. Look at maximal design inspiration -- bookcases stacked and crammed with books and objects. Gallery walls. Group like objects together and make them look like a little collection. Keep all of this s@#t corraled to a single wall, corner or space. Let the rest of the room be as simple as possible. 2) Cool containers are your friend. Leather suitcases, large baskets with hinged lids, those decorative cardboard photoboxes. Stack 'em high! 3) Must have furniture -- really tall narrow dresser with lots of drawers, rolltop desk, trunks as a coffee table and endtables/nightstands, hope chest (it's a bench seat AND a storage container).
Design for people who don’t clean often! There was a book by Don Aslett and he started at the door (buy 3 step mats, place them at the door AND inside the door and remove shoes). He went on to talk about design choices which help the rooms look clean and stay easy care.
Carol, I think we all need a video on interior design and decoration of studio apartments! Interior design for cool and starving artists' studio apartments.
As someone with a bachelors degree still renting a room from my parents, I think a really useful topic would be interior design for grown-ups. How to make a room that doesn’t have a teenage bedroom/college dorm vibe. Advice would be much appreciated. Love your channel!
Omg I've just redone my kitchen - we went with a gorgeous stone slab floor and IKEA everything else and it totally looks custom and special - thank you for validating my choices😂
Interior Design for ADHD folks in a 350 s.f. studio, i.e., organization and micro-factories/assembly-lines for hobbies, musical instrument practicing, things like balancing your checkbook, ALL of which can and must be easily set-up and stored away to prevent visual overwhelmedness). Looking forward to it. I've really been enjoying your Iconic Objects videos on Wayfair's YT channel! Too fun!
@ anyone who already bought the fringe rug: I actually bought a fringed rug and then literally had a manic moment and sat with hair shears to trim it super short and tbh I loved it so much more than with the fringe bc it just had a cute little fuzzy edged
I don’t know why I never thought to do that. I hate rug fringes (they catch pet hair, they’re annoying to vacuum, they stain really easily, etc.) and so I rule out any rugs that have them, but that massively cuts back on my rug selection. If I can just trim the fringe, then that makes rug shopping way easier.
My family and I have just moved into an RV full time and to a new state. Busy is an understatement lol. At this point trying to stay sane. It’s been an adjustment but I would love Caroline to help me decorate this thing to make it feel more like home ❤ all your videos are amazing. Thank you for your presence on the internet. Such a breath of fresh air.
The recessed cubbies got me rolling😂. My old townhouse had these up two flights of stairs. I placed red roses in them for every party. Guest felt valued and celebrated. ❤️
Caroline!!! You’re doing such awesome things with wayfair… but I truly miss your videos that are just you and life and the things you’re going through…. One of your videos helped me so so much with depression and anxiety….I love hearing ab the different life lessons you’ve learned along the way… so inspirational and truly helpful!❤❤❤
This video has the energy of the conversation you’ve had with your friend 20 times already and this is your one last time giving the same advice because you love them.
Love your hair. You’re right, little things can really mess with your mind. The older I get, the more I like light wood. My favorite floors are cork! Easy to keep clean and easy on your feet and legs. But I’m old. I like comfort best. You taught me a lot today, thanks.
Cork flooring! I worked for a podiatrist and he said floors are made of hard materials and that is too hard on our bodies. Good to know a cork floor is an option.
When you talk about changing floors to what pleases you, I relate. My floors are one color on the 1st floor, and on the 2nd floor are all bright colors. I made my house to my liking downstairs it's for family visits and daily living. Upstairs, it's for fun colors kids pick their room colors and decor. It my house, if I liked it it's all it matters. You can tell a family lives there, but everything has a home too. Am so lazy some days and busy other day's it's a valance we all need😅. Love your videos, make me feel understood, and seen. You are original, and we all lover honest experiences that make us relate so much. Thank you for all your time and effort to make this channel work.
Caroline, I’ve been watching a lot of your design advice videos and something I haven’t heard you touch on is how to find your style as a couple? My husband has always left the decorating up to me but doesn’t always love what I choose. I find myself not decorating in my true taste to try and accommodate a masculine look to try and appeal to him as well. Also I live about an hour from D.C. if you ever wanna come help a sista out ❤
The part about recessing just made me think of my parents' living room, with its beautiful recessed bookshelves . That room is the epitome of cozy. And this is now bringing up a bunch of sweet memories of that old farmhouse- thanks!
I needed this video! Busy homeschooling mom of 6, but I still want my house to look classy. ❤️ You are so right about all the recessed things. My house was built in the 1940's, and has this adorable recessed bookcase in the living room, and that is easily one of the best features of the house--I get so many compliments on it. Love your videos, Caroline!
Video I'd love to see: -interior design for even the ugliest rental kitchens/bathrooms -interior design if you're handy - or just broke ; ) -interior design that sparks joy -interior design for millenial grandma's (give me the flowered quilts) ❤
Yesss! Dark horrible blah forever “great rooms” with No natural light/ juxtaposed with bright light bedrooms with invading bright light and outside street-level energy. Low income apts in other words. Try to practice gratitude, but interiorly we are wilting and rotting
**Zero** storage space… so overflowing laundry rooms and doorways used for hanging items.. minimalism is the ticket but zero is the energy to purge it all.
I absolutely LOVE the recess piece. ANYTHING built in is my favorite and I think it immediately makes the home feel more cozy and more inviting because “omg the house has a built in wardrobe I don’t need to worry abt buying an armoire. It’s so cute”
I love your videos❤ Suggestion: Interior Design for couples/ opposite design personas. In other words, Interior Design for when you HAVE to collaborate lol I used to really dislike the photos my roommate wanted to put in our shared living room. Now I live with my boyfriend who has a pipe collection- I repeat, a pipe collection 😅
I actually laughed out loud when I read about the pipe collection. Girl... 🤣 And that's coming from a girl whose boyfriend has a cable collection! And I don't mean as a functional-I have a cable for every situation collection. No, no, no... It's an exhibition in our living room. So, sending my condolences, as a fellow why-do-i-have-to-live-like-this girl.
A great tip on how to pick colours I once read is to see if you already have something with many colours in it. Artwork, a rug, a pilllow case, a table runner, anything with some kind of print or pattern would work. Put that thing in the room and pull the rest of the colours from there. Say you have van Gogh's the night sky in your house, there are lots of blues in there, light and dark, there is some black, some white, quite a bit of yellow, some pinks and greens. So do a light yellow wall, dark green curtains and a blue couch. Or take the dark blues and blacks as a base and go from there, or go with the white and blue and pinks for a lighter combo. It works best with abstracter images and patterns rather than realistic images. But that way you know the colours will work together, and if you use the 30/70 rule you can make sure no colours are overwhelming. I've used a striped ikea pillow case as a base, it had lots of browns and beiges, a few yellow stripes, one dark green, a little gold sparkle, and some black and white. So fairly neutral with a few colours. The walls are yellow, the couch is dark brown, lots of warm wood on the floor and some furniture, there are yellow and grey accents, black metal pieces, as well as some gold and dark green accessories like candles or a ceramic gold cactus. I don't even have the pillow anymore, it died after our dog chewed on it by accident (he was chewing on his toys but missed a few times). But it made a fairly cohesive look imo.
super cute, totally talented n very funny, thanks for all the generous advice and entertainment! I'm always impressed and improved from watching your channel. thank you.
Would love to see 1. "Interior design for the IG addicts" - a video on curation of accent items and decoration: How little is too little, how much is too much? How and when to swap out something for the new trendy thing? and 2. "Interior design cheat codes for broke folks" - How to hide ugly items in plain sight, e.g. wifi router or that kitchen appliance that you use all the time or the pills that you forget to take if you don't see the package (and no phone reminders aren't working for me xD), when you can't afford the super fancy nicely-designed/packaged expensive alternative.
interior design for the "gets bored quickly / always wants to change my room layout / colour scheme / overall design" :D (the change lover with no money)
Video Rec: interior design for the (region of the country) transplant. Or, you could just do a deep dive into regional design, etc. How it varies. I grew up in Cincinnati and fell in love with the East Coast (currently living in Baltimore), but sometimes it’s jarring to go back to the midwest and see what’s preferred there. Thanks for the laughs & tips! :)
Do it for first home / apartment - can touch on mixing new and old pieces, where to invest and where to save when the finances are kinda coming in, but not fully yet, with debt
I love that so many commenters here want to see design for indecisive people! I'm one of them! I just can't decide if I want to go vintage or ultra-science-fiction modern. Do I want empty, calm spaces or lots of fluffy, cosy things? Green or blue? Dark and moody or light and happy? I love everything, so I end up with blarghagag anything spaces I don't like. Help.
I don't know if you are a mid-century modern fan, but you might be able to achieve this look with that design style! Add in some colored or warm tiles, furniture, and/or art pieces with your fav cozy textures all while having a muted modern look! Maybe some "modern" pieces with warm-toned finishes as well.
@@nicholeiverson I'm not that much into this style, but I understand why you would propose it - it's perfectly in the middle of a modern to vintage scale. Thing is, middle is not what I want, but I can't decide the direction either. You gave me a very good hint though. Looking through pinterest boards of midcentury modern I noticed a lot of natural wood panels, especially on walls and ceilings. While that may look dated (growing up in post soviet part of the Europe I've seen a lot of that), it hits some nostalgia vibes and I think I would feel good in such space. Thanks, you helped me a lot :)
I’m the same. I’m phobic about people’s opinions, and when I am confronted with choices, it’s all about what would so-and-so say?. So I return or dump stuff I do buy, and my house is always half-empty and lugubrious. I don’t invite anyone over ever. About 2 months ago though, I had an epiphany when reading a book about interior decoration with NO PICTURES-it was mostly centered on psychology-and so inspiring! Something clicked and I decided to honor my roots-my family is French and I grew up in the USA speaking French. (Still do.) For some deep, dark, unarticulated reason, I always felt the need to reject this heritage. So that’s where I’m headed now: my own version of French traditional/country, which is nothing like it’s portrayed in matchy/matchy furniture sets. It’s finally all making sense now because I have an integrated view of what I am and want. So, maybe part of the solution for indecisiveness lies in the calm acceptance of one’s roots and personality.
Officially giving a stranger’s permission to do a completely different style in every room 💙 also if you need to combine styles, separating the room into architecture vs furniture vs accessories really helps. Lots of people combine traditional architectural features (molding, fireplace mantles, fixtures, flooring can be changed) with more generic modern furniture and then bold choices for art/accessories
I usually organise my clothes by categories, however this activity running through how often they are worn was very helpful to work out purchases. I've worn out all of my previous clothes since transitioning from working fulltime outside the home to working part-time from home. I need to restock my entire wardrobe which I am really going to enjoy. thank you ☺ My main 2 categories are home clothes and coordinated outfits which I wear the tops for online work and add these to coordinated bottoms for appointments, catching up with friends and hobby groups, etc. Since working from home I've cut down on makeup, jewellery and down to one pair of shoes. However, I'd like to add some boots for winter and possibly a pair of leather clogs for variety as we moved and I want to get out and about to meet new people and join groups. I only need one formal outfit, however I can add that when I see something I really love. I knit and sew which means I update warm layers and accessories regularly. This has given me a great place to start, which is with new coordinated outfits. I find this group my favourite to wear.
Great tips Carolyn. Particularly liked the recessed one. My suggestion for a topic, since you asked, is about cohesion. Like start by standing at the curb for finding your design direction. What is the architecture of your home or building? What are the colors of the exterior, etc.
Hi Caroline! I am a teacher and the comment about the sparkle is soooo relatable 😂 How you spend hours of work, how you give yourself entirely and then the kids are just focused on one random sh*t 😂 It blows my mind everytime! Anyway, I loved the video! The idea is genius and you nailed it! Well done xxx
I haven't event finished this video actually only 2:46 in and I just want to say I love you! Thanks for being real, funny, and not afraid to be yourself on camera. Much love from the Bay Area :)
Your videos always feel like a lovely catch up with a treasured friend. I've loved this series, great advice mingled with comedic genius. My suggestion for another episode in the series is 'Interior Design for Indecisive People'... I'm a HUGE over thinker which leads to indecision and chronic procrastination resulting in rooms that are basically blank canvases. So any tips on how to create the scheme for a room would be very much appreciated.
I love watching this sitting boxed in by all my belongings in my new loft… I’ve dreamt of this all my life and I’m so overwhelmed. Thanks for the comedic relief 🤣
I just found you!! Yours are the only videos I watch completely. All the others I skip around through the blah blah but your blah blah is funny, informative and entertaining. Thank you Caroline!
Never knew I needed the word “bespoke” in the cartooniest Ohio voice ever but thank you. Also- great cheat codes I’m so sick of hearing about my damn rug sizes and hiding chords as ground breaking design tips.
I get a feeling that I’m “nestling” when I put things off center…. I find that when I do it I’m either nestling it into a corner (like your picture in the bathroom) or nestling objects together into a little vignette. Also, I never knew another person who shares the same manic energy for recessed/built-in shelves as me. It’s naturally occurring design!! 🫨
I know its a week later so I dont know if you'll see this but Ive thought of a design "category" Interior design for anxious people who want to make their home a cozy, comforting base. I'm thinking yes cozy blankets but also - how to avoid making your home look cold or sterile due to using certain colors, materials etc. What to look for in the perfect couch, lighting etc 💖
I was so happily surprised to hear you talk about the accent colour! I moved with a tight budged and 1 paint day to an already white/ grey apartment. I just thought... I have a bauhauslike chair that's red/black/chrome and my art has red accents... so I'll give one wall a light pink accent colour and chose a warm darker pink for the curtains.... and done. no need to immediately change all furniture and art 😁and the grey/ white paint is way less annoying because of the warmer shades of pink and wooden furniture pieces... and the pink is a bridge between white/ grey to red/ black
@@Caroline_Winkler I did love this video + the cheat sheets / short cuts; with you & your inimitable personality + style front and center! So happy you are working with Wayfair - what an amazing partnership ... You're rockin' it Miss B (🐝)!!! 🥰
Watching this because we're moving in, like, three months and I am, in fact, a busy bitch but also want this new home to look fancier than my current one. Absolutely mad stoked that my new house already HAS recesses. One big one in the open plan kitchen/living/dining area specifically which I am going to paint dark navy blue and stick my big ol painting in it with a picture light. RECESS. Can't change the floors but I can buy new rugs which is close enough. This video is gold, just, pure 24ct gold. Thank you.
I looooooove these types of videos about design.....honestly I'd listen to you talk about anything 😂 your personality brings me so much joy, don't let the haters get to you. Keep shining!!

"INTERIOR DESIGN for Animal Lovers"
Problem's to overcome:
- Hairs or feathers everywhere
- Stinky litterboxes that need changing regularly
- Food station (somehow there is always food on the wall after a meal)
- Clawboards or clawed up furniture
- Bed and Sleep area
- Play area (all the cat and dog toy's, and sometimes even dead birds or mice,
somehow allways accumulate under the livingroom couch...
even if the animal is to big to go under it!)
I’d love to see that. We used to have so much nice stuff and have turned to decorating / designing around the cats.
“How to have nice things that the cats can’t vomit on” 😆
INTERIOR DESIGN for the wanna-be minimalist : for those who have and love their stuff, but also don’t want to be aware of how much of it they have
We should call that wannabe minimalist style “denialist style”

I'm 57, empty nester. I decided to embrace minimalism and got rid of things I didn't love anymore. Then I felt depressed by the lack of warmth in my home. Now I am curating vintage pieces that are intentional and make me happy. Facebook marketplace is my new best friend! The main problem is I like too many styles! From true vintage/antiques, to MCM, farm house, boho! How to incorporate all my styles cohesively?
Basically how to style a space/home with multiple styles. 🥴
You can try collecting the vibes in different rooms! Like this one is the boho vibe, this room is the mcm room, etc
if you love all the single pieces, they will fit together no matter what. who cares what styles other people define. if you love them all and put them together its YOUR style.
Interoir design for indecisive people!!
BAH oh this one gets at the heart of so many people's problems. this could be great
Kinda related, maybe a chapter of this video.

Under the same umbrella: interior design for people with commitment issues! One of the reasons I can't use wallpaper :'(
Yes! When you want to get it done, but there's so many core decisions to make... flooring, large expensive pieces - those foundational components! So many pins... but no decisions made.
hack for fringed rugs - I use a long strip of clear packing tape on the underside of the fringe, which really helps keep it in place! even my cat can't mess it up
This should be bumped further up, genius hack!
Video idea: Interior design or cheat codes for people who hate cleaning (gadgets, what pieces to avoid, your tips, idk). Thank you for this one!
love love! thank u for the recc!
@@Caroline_Winkler also for people who have pets ! For example, with 2 cats, I don't have to have a rug (because it would get destroyed) but then the rooms always feel too "bare" because there's nothing on the floor connecting the sofa to the coffee table for example
This would be so fun infused with Caroline's unique brand of no-nonsense, practicality, kindness, and humor!
while we're waiting ...
Ohhh loveeeee this idea! Yes please!
The reason why a little bit off center decor pieces work - It works when it follows the principle of golden ratio/ Fibonacci scale, as long as the other elements are working into the same golden ratio pathway, even slightly is usually fine. It doesn't work in those instances when it's impossible to draw a fibonacci pattern parallel with other elements in the room
omg I remember having ONE recessed cubby in my childhood home and i was obsessed with it. it felt so permanent and intentional
truly!! i think i never grew out of this childhood love. i love a nook, i love a niche. i just want everything to be protected and cozy
My favorite part of my favorite historic apartment in Denver had a little recessed phone nook?! The beauty and a perfect place for keys?! When my little grey kitty got into it!?!? Perfect.
@@Michelle-js5khthat sounds so lovely ♥️
I love to intentionality of “built in”. It’s meant to be there…specifically there, in that space.
I had two of these growing up and I loved them!
On the paintings being off center: in filmmaking and photography, the rule is that, when you use a grid, your subject belongs in one of the four corners around the innermost square, because that's where the viewer's eye is naturally drawn. Not the center... slightly off kilter. So that's the principle you've got going here :)
Mind blown. Idk why but I am 😂 ty for sharing that!!!
Hi there, do you have any recommendation for books about pictorial composition? I'd really appreciate it
@@arieldamian2248 I really wish I did 😭 almost everything I learned about composition was from either filmmaking classes or videos here on UA-cam. Ofc I can recommend the latter ✨
Interior design for :
- exhausted young parents (with kid's mess)
- couples with different tastes and have to compromise/balance
- people with no taste (cannot tell which goes with what). This could be a whole sub-series like "retro design/ modern design/ boheme design, etc for people with no taste"
I think Paige wassel has a video about mixing couple's different tastes
Seconding couples with very different tastes coming from the maximalist married to a borderline minimalist
Yes please: exhausted parents- can it also touch on how after you have kids you have a mini identity crisis?
@@holosapiens I remember a TV show of couples moving in together and having to blend very different styles. They got to veto a number of items that were VERY important that they got to keep no questions, and a few "would like to keep" items as well, and they could list a few MUST go items for their partners. A designer would then compare the lists to see what could go, and kept all the important items, and usually was able to create a cohesive home.
Why do I fall under all 3 😂😂😂
I know you hate boho….BUT it would be super fun to see you take on the challenge of designing a boho space that you actually DO LIKE. I love your taste in everything and I’d be curious to see what parts of that aesthetic you’d end up actually liking
Oh I LOVE THIS IDEA! Very underrated here!
I’ve NEVER seen a designer design something they actually hate while simultaneously trying to force themselves to find things in that category that may actually not repulse them in the end hahah
And with HER dry humor in general, this would be comedic and educational GOLD!
1- design for anxious people: calming environments, space to relax, sentimental items
2- design for ADHD people - similar concept, but an environment that helps you concentrate, relax, and systems that work. Many UA-cam videos similar to this topic already re: systems for ADHD people but I'm more interested in your take from a design perspective
Also center aligned is still css so you can't get away from it 😂 dev here
I second this
Yes! For ADHDers!
Yes!!
I just started learning coding and I had the exact same thought 😂
PLEASE!!!!!!!!
The interior design when you are depressed was a great one! I actually do a lot of what you had suggested. Especially when seasons change. Maybe a follow up? Or how to deal with holiday decor when you don't want to do it this year! 😢 I think of the folks who might have recently lost a loved one.
For the holiday one, you can either just not do it and embrace that, or pick one high impact thing like tinsel or fairy lights
The recessing part had me howling. You are so good. So happy Wayfair saw your value...you are literally their best content and have the best comedic delivery!
you're a dang sweetheart for this. I am loving working with Wayfair, they are by far the most fun and best spirited brand I've ever had the chance to work with

Yes please THIS 😊
I once heard someone say, "Don't be afraid to paint your walls, because they're never going to give you that deposit back anyway." I think that's wonderful advice, but that's just me; If it's going to freak you out the whole time, then it's not worth it, obviously.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Do pants stay on velvet hangers? Do they get creased?
i love that you just flipped and edited the thumbnail for your bachelors video for this thumbnail when its a video about busy bitches like thats lowkey genius

Requests or recommendations for future programs:
1 Letting go of things you don't need and you know it!
2 Paying attention to corners (I feel corners are like little rooms within a room. Your eye seeks corners so they better say something.)
3 Locating sofa wall which is the longest wall. You don't have to place your sofa there but know where it is. It needs a large statement piece if you don't use your sofa there.
4 Using your sofa as a room divider
5 Why you must have either thrifted items, antique/vintage items, travel finds to accent and validate your decorating style.
6 Accent walls, great believer
7 Make use of every inch, especially in apartments. Bring forgotten spaces to life. Turn a closet into a "recessed area" with a chest of drawers and mirror or a bench with clothing hooks above, display shelving, etc. It will make your apartment look larger.
8 How to mix design trends like farm and contemporary which works nicely
9 Statement piece - every room must have a statement piece, preferably one that is old, recycled, upscales, reinvented, etc.

Childhood memory triggered: It was one of my household chores to comb the rug fringe straight. 15:50
😂 Oh my gosh! That's such a great chore for a little kid! Thanks for the idea! I'm going to go make my daughter do that!!! 😂

These are great. You’re an absolute gem.
How about doing an episode for someone who lives with a (minor) hoarder?
Or how to incorporate heirlooms into your own style when they don’t match?
Or how to pick and choose between keeping heirlooms and not letting your home become an antique store…
I wish I could like this comment more than once, because you just basically described my living situation. I hope she does an episode on this!
Oooh YES. I have a family heirloom chaise with the beautiful original 1800s fabric chartreuse jacquard fabric. It doesn’t work anywhere in my 1br apt and I don’t sit on it or allow the pets on it… So it’s always just taking up space wherever I live- but I love it 😢
The stresses of sentimentality

@ anyone who already bought the fringe rug: I actually bought a fringed rug and then literally had a manic moment and sat with hair shears to trim it super short and tbh I loved it so much more than with the fringe bc it just had a cute little fuzzy edged
I love those manic moments. Life is too short to be dissatisfied LOL. also often it takes like five minutes and then I love it after.

You can’t hide your sparkle girl! Rock it! ✨
I DO want my home to excite and delight me, dang it! Thank you!

@@ladycactus110 Maybe. It's a nice thought.
I love the new hair cut!! It's such a subtle change, but it makes your eyes POP! 😊
I have a BUNCH of recessed walls in my small apartment and I must say it makes decorating so easy and FUN!
I usually organise my clothes by categories, however this activity running through how often they are worn was very helpful to work out purchases. I've worn out all of my previous clothes since transitioning from working fulltime outside the home to working part-time from home. I need to restock my entire wardrobe which I am really going to enjoy. thank you ☺
My main 2 categories are home clothes and coordinated outfits which I wear the tops for online work and add these to coordinated bottoms for appointments, catching up with friends and hobby groups, etc.
Congratulations on your Wayfair videos that are doing *great* on their channel. You are the real talk interior queen and I love it
Great tips Carolyn. Particularly liked the recessed one. My suggestion for a topic, since you asked, is about cohesion. Like start by standing at the curb for finding your design direction. What is the architecture of your home or building? What are the colors of the exterior, etc.
Listening to Caroline explain dark counters vs. light counters in a home is giving Ian Malcolm explaing Chaos Theory so hard😂
Hi Caroline! Anyway, I loved the video! The idea is genius and you nailed it! Well done xxx
Having a black stove also collects a lot of visual dust daily! As soon as I clean it, it looks dirty hours later.
Sister, that bang is GIVING!!!
HAHA, yes!!
Literally the most useful and concrete design tips of all the 3000 interior design videos i have watched during the last years. Tysm I want to bow
Interior design that has personality and style, but won't make your partner break up with you
hahaha not sure i have answers for this one 🫣
I get a feeling that I’m “nestling” when I put things off center…. I find that when I do it I’m either nestling it into a corner (like your picture in the bathroom) or nestling objects together into a little vignette. Also, I never knew another person who shares the same manic energy for recessed/built-in shelves as me. It’s naturally occurring design!! 🫨
oo i love this concept. the art of NESTLING! that's a whole design kink on it's own
@@Caroline_Winkler”nestle some shit” - Caroline, one day probably
@@Cheesyenchilady 😂
I know its a week later so I dont know if you'll see this but Ive thought of a design "category"
Interior design for anxious people who want to make their home a cozy, comforting base. I'm thinking yes cozy blankets but also - how to avoid making your home look cold or sterile due to using certain colors, materials etc. What to look for in the perfect couch, lighting etc
💖
I read this at first as "Busty B*tches" and I was like, "Okay, an interesting choice." 😂
hahahah adding it to the video recc list
Do a design show for single moms. Focusing on practical, functional, simple, beautiful spaces and systems! I'd love your suggestions!
I would love a video about cool furniture / homeware shops that are NOT thrifting / vintage shopping.
Good Morning, Busy 🐝 - 😂 !!! What a nice surprise to see a video from you unexpectedly - it's going to be a better day now!!! 🥰
dah i hope you love it!
Thank you.
"Uncles to text!" 😂
this was my favorite part of the video. i always wonder if someone else will pick the same part. thank u for seeing me.
@@Caroline_Winkler Ha ha --- that was a classic Caroline moment; live for those!!! 😉😅🤣‼️
Everything is giving! Hair, eyes, lipstick, dark hair on the light green top…The bangs are bangin’, babe!
Interior design for the indecisive? I love interior design but that's also kind of my problem when it comes to creating a space I'm really happy with
amazing recc, seeing this twice now and writing it down. would be A+
I looooooove these types of videos about design.....honestly I'd listen to you talk about anything 😂 your personality brings me so much joy, don't let the haters get to you. Keep shining!!
Another very entertaining video!! I spy new art! Excuse me while I go re-hang something off center.
p.s. that shade of green is flattering...
there IS some new art around!! i'm gonna have to do a new tour :)
