    It's rare that you see such genius as this, jazz meshed with pop, an infectious chorus, and then the lyrics are pure poetry that have true meaning.

    This links in nicely to Rick Beato's video about why Sting is uncopyable. What an incredible song.

    Thanks ! Don't know why Fortress isn't on the soundtrack album -- it's the most memorable song in the film.

      It’s supposedly about his first divorce, maybe that had something to do with leaving it off. The timing may have been bad.

    Can’t believe I forgot about this one for 25 years until UA-cam Music app recommended it. YT music app is reminding off all kinds of great songs I forgot . Possibly the only feature of YT that’s still GREAT!

    I remember my dad showing my brother, my mum, and me this documentary when we were really young. This film started my obsession with sting. Firstly, you have to be ridiculously good and a composer and writer to get musicians as brilliant as these Jazz musicians to work under you. Yes Sting had the money but I can guarantee you a jazz musician could never work playing crap music even though they're being paid for it. Some takeaways: Branford Marsalis is as good, possibly better than John Coltrane, we lost Kenny Kirkland way too young, Omar Hakim is one of the greatest drummers of all time and Sting would have been just as successful if he was a novelist. Also, Paris was really the perfect place to premiere his work

    • @mansenmias
      @mansenmias 2 роки тому

      Once again ridiculous overrating of black musicians. :/ The tempo goes here and there, Omar Hakim is a brilliant player despite his shortcoming here, but definitely not among greatest drummers of all time, the bass player is a total joke - fortunately Sting returned to bass -, Kenny Kirkland was good, hardly exceptional... but have to(!) agree with you on Marsalis, he is/was bloody awesome!

    • @juanestadian8471
      @juanestadian8471 2 роки тому +8

      @@mansenmias Dude.....firstly, looks like your problem is not music, its something else. Omar Hakim is not a pop drummer. He's a jazz drummer. Sting picked him up from Weather Report. Unless you think Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter aren't great musicians and would hire similarly sub-standard players to join their group. Dienda, played by Branford Marsalis(written by by Kenny Kirkland) in the 80s and redone with lyrics by sting during the Italy concerts that became the All This Time album is a sublime composition. You didn't even look at Kirkland's solo to Shadows in the rain.......do you know any of his work......like at all?

    • @juanestadian8471
      @juanestadian8471 2 роки тому

      @@mansenmias And actually you're right.....Omar is not the greatest drummer of all time. That honor goes to Fela Kuti's wizard that played with him during his golden period in the 70s, Tony Oladipo Allen.

    • @nomchowski8297
      @nomchowski8297 Рік тому +4

      Belated Amen to that. Omar Hakim was brilliant on Dream of the blue turtles and Kenny Kirkland equally so. That album is one of the best examples of perfect synergy between a singer songwriter and musician and other musicians I've ever witnessed.

    Superb rendition. The Dream of the Blue Turtles was one of records of the 80's. So many ideas and influences put in a cooking pot and came out a masterpiece. An amazing achievement from a young man who obviously loves all music. Sting is one of the greats ..but not loved by the critics.

      It's because in the movie / documentary, when they're shown rehearsing, the (American) singers (especially Janice Pendarvis) struggle with the correct pronounciation for the word "chasm". 😄 It comes up in the song right then.

      Which is weird because it doesn't sound live at all (apart from the solo part at the beginning). Audio is way too good to be live and he's not even singing into the mic for half of it. Presumably they replaced the original audio for the movie.
