So many fish in 4K on a 3wt! - Fishing Medina River - McFly Angler Episode 85

- I went fishing with my new Risen 3wt fly rod. The genesis rod and new Armor 2 reel. Great setup for under $200! This thing performed wonderfully on the bass, sunfish and rio grand cichlids! Guys, two really nice rio's this trip, and hooked another that got off. This was a fun trip no doubt. However it started very frustrating. I didn't catch much the first hour of the trip and neither did Paul. Web both struggled to catch anything, but then the fishing turned on quickly. At around 9am we started getting hits, and did until we left. Seemed like the fish were sleeping in. HAHA.
I am trying something new where I put the fly I catch fish on in the top left corner of the video. Many ask what I used and I figured this will help for you to know what was used.
I sell these flies I used by the way, so just let me know if you want to buy some and I can tie them up custom for you. Below are some social media links to where you can contact me directly to discuss custom flies.
Also here is where you can buy that setup. Make sure you type in my discount code at checkout for a discount given by Risen to all my subscribers. type in McFly at checkout! www.risenfly.c...

“He ain’t gonna know... he’s 6... I paid for it, right?” Pretty much the same thing I say when I eat my 6yo daughter’s snacks.😂
Hahahaha!
Fear the beaver!!!! Thanks for the awesome fishing vids! Living vicariously here!
Haha! Not sure what it was. Definitely not a beaver, I don’t think they exist out here in Texas. I could be wrong though. Something about knee height maybe? And moved funky. Are there porcupines in Texas? Maybe that. Not sure.... darkish in Color.
Thanks for watching, hope you can get out soon also.
That looks like a fun trip. I thought I would catch "panfish" like that with my Risen Genesis 7' 6" 3WT but caught peacock bass which are good fighters. Glad to see Paul out there with you.
Yeah it was fun. How did it handle the peacock bass?
McFly Angler Fortunately they were not two pounders. The combo worked well. I can’t wait for my replacement rod tip to arrive (now I know why you store the rod in its sock after fishing) so I can use it again now that the temperature is not as blazing hot here in Miami.
3 weights can be a ton of fun. Keep the good stuff coming.
Thanks! Yeah it was a blast! Glad you liked the video
Nice I need to get a fly rod and reel....... then learn how to use it! Nice catches
Lol thanks!! Yeah fly fishing is fun! Check risen rods out I think you will like them
What a pretty spot. Thank you for the vid.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
It's awesome how there's one side of the creek that's open most of our creek's are covered by trees have to get wet lol
Yeah there’s some open spots here. And I was wading on this trip, still have to get in the water here. Actually it’s law. The bank is owned by someone so your not allowed to walk along it too far.
Nice video. Was just on the Medina myself. Will check out the flies you have for sale. Was the crossing where you started near Bandera? I'm looking for another part of the Medina to fish. Thanks!
Hey sorry I missed this comment. Thanks, yeah its a beautiful river. Honestly I can’t remember the crossing I apologize. I met roger there. He sent me a pin on the map. Haha!
The funny thing is when I watch your vids and my wife overhears she always says what is he gonna forget to take with him this time lol
Lol
😂
bully spider below a llano bug. What a great setup for targeting gills and sunnys.
For sure, hard to beat in my opinion. Thanks!
I saw the ARMOR II on the Risen website. Looking forward to a review on this reel. Nice solo day on the water Dad!
Thanks man! Yeah it was fun! I went though with Paul, I usually actually go with him. He knows the area well, and around here you never know if your gonna get bit by a water moccasin or scorpion, so it’s good to have a buddy with you.
This was a great video!
Thank you
СУПЕР!!!! БОЛЬШОЕ СПАСИБО ЗА ТРУД!!!. ИЗ РОССИИ С УВАЖЕНИЕМ!)))))
Did you use a sink tip leader. nice catch
Thanks! So not for here no. I have used it, but usually in deep lakes or fast moving deep rivers for fishing streamers
What are you fishing a drainage canal it's pretty cool!!
Medina river, it comes off of a lake. Lol.
Great day on the water!
Thanks, yes it was!
What part of the Medina is this? I’m thinking about going soon, looks really nice
So it’s north of the lake. Look on the map and if you find roads crossing you can usually park along the road (where signs permit) and walk down to the river. Good luck! Hope you catch a ton!
@@McFlyAngler Thanks man! Great video
Thanks! Btw, right now it’s a bit cold for bass and rio…. Check out the Guadalupe where the stocked trout. I recently went and even caught some on the dry fly…. Video out on the trip tomorrow morning at 9am
Man your buddy there looks like he pulls off all of his fly line.
Whatcha mean?
We’re is this it looks sick
Outside of San Antonio Texas
Definitely a chupacubra from Mexico, jk, I liked the show thank you,
Thanks! Hahah! Yeah chupacabra, I think so. Isn’t it a curse or something to see it? I guess I’m a goner guys!!! Lol
do you happen to know the CFS or flow rate of the river during the trip ?
I don’t sorry...
Well done. What size leader and line do you use on the 3 weight?
3wt fly line, double taper. 4x leader and 5x tippet. Except for that popper, had to go heavier with the popper.
@@McFlyAngler Thanks.
if it was colder water, that would be a great trout stream
Yeah for sure, reminds me of some of the little creeks in Colorado I used to fish
Do you make soft hackle flies?
Yes, I have, loved fishing soft hackle out in Colorado.
McFly Angler do you make them for panfish?
I can, do you have a specific pattern in mind?
McFly Angler nope not really. I just saw a post on insta saying how soft hackles were good for blue gill
Oh for sure, they mimic spiders which are a common food source for sunfish. They love all terrestrials. Hoppers, beetles, ants, spiders, etc. yeah man, I’ve tied a lot. In fact the bully bluegill fly is similar to a soft hackle. I mean different, but the same idea. The rubber legs act like the soft hackle feathers. Body looks like the body of a spider. Similar concept just executed differently. Well i do sell flies, so if you want to give a few different soft hackles a try let me know. I can custom tie them up for you.
If you can't transport game fish how do you get one certified without killing them!!???
Certified? Not sure what you mean
@@McFlyAngler how can you get a record certified??? You have to use certified scales which means you have to transport the fish to a tackle shop that has certified scales!!!
Good question I’m not sure how one would certify a record. Probably by taking a picture against a measuring tape and then measuring the girth also. Usually they have ways of calculating that. I think that’s how people get their state records certified. But I don’t know, never tried.
Do you happen to remember what fly line you were using on this 3wt? Or do you have one you recommend to use? Thanks.
It was the double taper line from risen fly.
@@McFlyAngler thank you.
