I only have freshwater experience with fly fishing so I cannot really help you out. I highly recommend checking out the Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing for more info. I wish I be more help but rather be honest than be “know-it-all”. Best of luck on the water eh!
Have a thousand dollar custom and a 500 dollar St. Croix plus another dozen fly rods collecting dust! I fish with a 129 dollar Pflueger Medalist. How much you pay for a fly rod means absolutely nothing. Most spend a lot on a reel which is a waste of money. The line is what's important, so buy the best you can afford. Keep your line clean and dressed.😊
I’m a little late here however, great video and I did subscribe. For Largemouth Bass. The 3 and 4 pounders. You really think the 6wt is the way to go. I do use a 7 wt Lamson and they seem to give that a workout. But I was wanting to drop a size down for versatility etc. trout , bass. All freshwater. So you think the 6wt Clearwater will do the job ? Second question. If you had your time back. Would you have sealed the cork on the Clearwater. I believe in another video you were a little disappointed about the amount of filler in the cork. But I get it $250.00 US is not big coin on a rod. Thanks.
I have a few clearwaters. The 6wt is my all around rod and pretty much reach for it 80% of the time. The corks on all of them are bad except my switch rod. I will wait till the filler gets really bad(probably spring time) and then restore them. They’re a great value but yeah, that 6wt just does a lot. Hope this helps
🌴 So , is the 6 wt an all around have fun rod ? 🤔 Hummm, could be , I lived up north - mid- upper Wisconsin for quite s few years fished everything with fly rod , came down to west central Florida aloooong time ago fished fresh water here , and it was fun ! But after starting to fish saltwater - which is a whole new ball game ! I truly fell in love 😍 so is it possible to fish saltwater with a 6 wt , hell ya ! But 👈🏼 you could set your self up for disaster, the fish down her don’t play by the same set of rules as fresh water , they try to cut you off on barnacle encrusted docks , mangroves, oysters or take you down into sharp rock pockets, , and then the big one, the size of the fish ,Ya never know what’s going to grab your fly ! So the only way to beat ‘em at their game heavier tackle , appropriate equipment an 8- 9 wt rod and reel with a really good drag ,with a floating wt fwd line with a tapered heavy leader and depending what species match the tippet , but at least 20 lb . Now , I’ve just started fishing with a cheap 5 wt it’s a Wally World Cortland combo - why ahhh because I’m an idiot , I guess it’s the challenge thing ,so a 6 wt is totally exceptable , could you loose fish ,yes will you loose fish yes ,🤔 Will it be fun Hell Ya ! ( Warning ! Kids do not try this on the water as it may become addictive, and that’s only if you can pry the fly rod out of your parents hand ! ) 👍 😄
Yeah. Haven’t ever targeted saltwater with the fly rod but have read the warning labels! Haha! Heck a 12” mackerel fights like a 16” brookie so I totally can understand the “go big or go home” mentality. Cheap rods? I have a tough time recommending expensive rods cause the cheap ones just get the job done. To a point of course! I heard great things about Cortland rods so you might not have a dud. Thank you for the comment and giving the video a gander. Keep those lines tight bud!
Thanks man! Dude, was carpin’ by the spot you and I know about. Got schooled!! Haha! Geese came and screwed up my stalk on a huge one. Hope your killin it man. Cheers!
I am done with Orvis, they no longer make a fly rod with a hook keeper (an important feature for versatility). Also, I use a 9’ 3 or 4 wt. as my all-around, I have landed every fish you listed. And, I use a 6 lb. tippet on those rods, so I still get them in fast. Some of us want maximum bend - remember, in most waters the majority of fish are small. Yeah I know, wind limits you with those weights, but the fun…and besides, someone has to catch the bait!
I really do like hook keepers too! Probably a cost saving measure marketed as something else for them. It’s not the brand but the 6wt that I was gunning for in this video. I love 4 weights too and I say to each their own! Appreciate you chiming in and sharing your experience. Btw, catching small fish a lot of fun! Tight lines👍
They are “nice to haves” but i am more focused on the feel and performance. The other stuff is just a bonus. I get what you’re saying, everyone has their preferences 🙂
It’s less about the type of fish than the size and weight of fly you are throwing. You can’t really throw massive streamers on a 5 weight and a 8 weight is a bit aggressive for a parachute Addams but both a 8 weight and a 4 weigh will catch the same size trout.
What? Are counting my “nine-foot-six-weights”? You work for the “nine foot six weight census”?!?!? If you’re Canadian and happen to ever watch Trailer Park Boys, you just might get the reference. Haha!
No it really isn't it's not worth a monkeys when s a 25mph wind is hitting you in face I've been fly fishing for 40 odd years now rivers and salt water .
40" pike on the fly is massive!! On a 6wt too, awesome
It was wild! I was going for smallies and then WHAM!! That memory I shall cherish for life. Thank you so much for watching 🙂
You have great content and deserve more subscribers!
Shhh!!! You’re making me blush!!
You ever get over to Lake Nipigon and it's tributaries for brookies? If what was your experience?
Not yet, but will make the drive up one of these days.
Hey brother, I kind of want to get in fly fishing, but I need something that I can use on fresh and salt water

Agree Clearwater but why not the 5 wt 10’ all arounder?
Too long if it’s not for Stillwater ? Plus a 5WT isn’t very versatile for bigger bugs or flies 🤷🏻♂️

6 weight was the every-man standard fly rod when I started fly fishing over fifty years ago.
I've got the 10 foot 6 weight of this rod. It is awesome.
I almost got the 10ft. Kick myself for not doing it. What a beauty you got👌
@@greenhornflyhorn Here in Scotland That extra length can help when playing Sea Trout and big browns over 3lb.

Simple to add a hook keeper yourself.
Hook keeper and alignment dots should be the first thing you look for on any fly rod at any price level . Minor details…. But a very nice necessity .👍

How did this video come up when I searched Helios 10’ 4wt?!!
