"Supposedly" the dress code was implemented to dignify chess and the players. A photo posted online clearly shows the FIDE president dressed in jeans and sneakers in a formal meeting with a senior Chinese government official. What is allowed to the top leadership of FIDE is not allowed to chess players. COMPLETE HYPOCRISY!!!
The rules for meeting a government official were not broken, the rules of the tournament were broken. It is more like consistency than hypocrisy, Magnus had a "Do you know who I am??" moment and I feel bad that they couldn't be a bit more corrupt in the circumstance. Chess is a HIGHLY rigid bag of rules and regulations, Magnus is no innocent or naieve party, he probably has used his power many times in the past and people have bent to his wishes. It's 2024. These days, people wear jeans with dress suit jackets. FIDE's dress code is out of touch with the modern World. This will alienate many young chess fans as yet more "old people's rules", and I say that as a 64 yr old!
I’m 73 and I agree with you. FIDE handled this badly . Let us see them apply their rules equally for every player. …..And where is your tie !! CEO …really
The rule leaves some room for interpretation. Jeans are not strictly forbidden if it is business attire. And that's the point. Magnus is one of the best-dressed chess players and his style is well maintained in the business world. Therefore, the move against him is clearly an insult and was not necessary according to the rules. I wonder what a poor wretch this Chief Arbiter is... and of course FIDE as an organization. Anyone who covers something like that is not from this world.
FIDE is WRONG here. Rules should always be enforced with reason. Wearing jeans DOES NOT in any way affect the game of chess to the point where it justifies penalizing the player with game disadvantages (e.g., being banned from the next round). FIDE should've just fined him more, especially since he said he'll change tomorrow.
Magnus is the total jerk here! The tournament rules apply to everyone, including Magnus. If he had a problem with dress code, he could have raised it before hand. If he wants to play in iconic venues and have high profile, he needs to comply.

Oh my god... Magnus Carlsen dropped the f-word on you, and you still say there is no animosity. What a hypocrite. He is a nice politician, probably why he is successful at FIDE.
@donyc 1) How about acknowledging that Magnus already played 3 (or 4) games that day, and there was no reason to send him home just before the last one ? 2) How about acknowledging that we are in the 21st century, and stupid rules like this have no place. People want to see Magnus play, not his pants. 3) How about doing what is good for the game and not pretend like you're not trying to monopolize chess prestige without actually finding ways to get top chess pros paid for attending FIDE events ? Outside candidates and the world championship, there is no money. Chess pros are starving and you threaten them on top if they participate in non FIDE tournament ?
People wear jeans all the time, it's not like his shirt says, "F%$^ Fide" there shouldn't be a dress code as long as the clothes aren't too inappropriate for example so that kids can play as well
FIDE kicking Magnus out for wearing jeans is like banning Mozart from a piano recital because his wig wasn't on straight - an absurd self-destructive display of vanity. If they're so obsessed with formalwear maybe they should start dressing pawns as undertakers to match the funeral they're orchestrating for the game. This isn't about respect for the game, it's about a desperate, grasping need to control something they no longer have the competence to manage. FIDE isn't protecting chess, they're strangling it to compensate for their own irrelevance.
Dress code? Look at the CEO. What a slob. No tie, not clean shaven, hairs growing out of his nose, bad haircut, horrible posture. If that conforms to the dress code for the CEO, the players should be able to come in their pajamas.
I hate magnesium calcium, but this comment is 100%. If FIDE had any principles, they would have banned magnesium for what he did to Hans. Doesn't mean it makes sense to forfeit him over fashion jeans. They were probably more expensive than the pants most of the players were wearing, the dress code is moronic. I can understand if they ban swim trunks and flipflops, as it creates a spectacle, but any sort of fashion attire seems appropriate for chess. This isn't the 1950's.
This is honestly an embarrassment for chess. A dress code is such a premitive way of thinking. Especially when you are trying to promote it as an esport. Adapt to the modern times.

Hikaru literally said this goes deeper than just the dress code since Fide have been targeting players about plaiting in freestyle and making them choose to either play in candidates or play freestyle. FIDE ultimately wants control and Magnus used this as an opportunity to give them bad face and have a causus belli for his endeavor in non FIDE events. "Rules" should be reasonable and must have "good purpose". 1. Reasonableness: Unreasonable rules often lead to unhappiness, frustration, and even harm. Rules should be based on universal principles of fairness, justice, and respect for individual rights. Arbitrary rules often violate these principles. 2. Purpose: Rules should not be ends in themselves but rather means to achieve desirable outcomes. Rules that serve no legitimate purpose, such as promoting the common good or protecting individual rights, are considered unjust. • Rules should be grounded in reason and serve a clear, beneficial purpose • They should not be arbitrary or overly restrictive, as this can lead to: ○ Violations of individual rights and freedoms ○ Creating a climate of distrust and resentment
Magnus was not happy about FIDE hassling players not to play a (Freestyle?) tournament. He mentions this but I suspect this goes deeper. Serious lack of proper mediation here methinks. And Chess joins esports next year. This could lead to a schism. This sounds like the CEO decided this was his Rubicon and defending himself by painting a negative picture of a demanding prima dona. I suspect he may come to regret this.I do NOT like the negativity in his answers regarding Magnus - there is something deeper here.
That’s what I’m thinking too. Like we don’t know all the details of the freestyle thing but there’s clearly a lot of underlying tension going on that probably started before the freestyle drama and will keep continuing. Today maybe Magnus’s last straw broke. And when you have the fame and GOATness of Magnus Carlsen you don’t need FIDE if you don’t want to work with them. Ex. Carlsen didn’t need to keep playing the WC to still be considered #1, the GOAT of chess, and keeping his current fame status.

Alex Holowczak is a top guy & a top arbiter but he'll never let anyone bend the rules regardless of who it is. That said the rules on dress code stink & need changing, Magnus looked far smarter than many/most that were not wearing jeans!
Alex Holowczak lacks common sense then... he comes across as a robot. Reminds me of an umpire in baseball who called a ball on the last pitch of an almost perfect game, denying the pitcher of a coveted perfect game. Discretion is the greater part of valor in such situations and it would have been better to call a strike and end the game (and from what I've read the pitch was a strike anyway). MC looks good in jeans and that's good enough for the dress code.
Back in your box dimwit, agreed Magnus looks smarter in jeans than the majority of others do without them. But Alex did not write the rules, he gets paid to enforce them. If you play in one of his events you know it will be ran efficiently & fairly.

We know he played 8th rounds already and we fined him for 200$ but we wanted to really show him so we told him to go change even though we had already punished him and only 2 rounds were left
Between this and the BS with the Freestyle Chess, we should start putting out bets on how long it takes FIDE to fall from “grace” and go bankrupt. It’s funny he compares Chess to Tennis… when what 90% of chess is played online these days? Sports that are always in-person it makes sense to have a dress code. Chess players are used to playing in casual clothes (for money) online. For them to stop him from playing…is absolutely a step too far. At the worst they should have fined him again and told him if he shows up he will be fined for dress code violation. Simple. Reasonable. It’s one thing if he’s wearing awful revealing clothes or something like that. But normal jeans… really?
Even though Magnus wasn’t going to win probably it’s still a huge hit. My motivation to watch kinda went down 50%. It wasn’t a sports shorts or anything, it was a classy jeans. Probably costing more than most other suits there. If I would look around I would probably see others guys rocking not classy/well trimmed beards, hairstyles or even a cheap looking suit.
Magnus dominating, Magnus making a comeback, Magnus losing, it all gets people to watch and gets sponsors involved. Magnus draws people to the game, no matter how he's performing. In fact, Magnus losing might even make MORE people watch because it's so rare.
Magnus has made insane comebacks in the history. Watch his recent Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz 2024, where he went on a winning rampage of 10 games in a row against Super GMs when necessary to win the tournament. If he had won next 5 games, he could have been no.1 in Rapid as well.
I think increasing fines for each match played without adhering to dresscode makes sense. But refusing to let him (or anyone) play is petty and unreasonable. I see this as magnus taking the hit to start the conversation.
they didn't block him from playing, they let him finish his round and asked, after the next round, which would have a break, for him to change, he's staying 5 minutes away from the venue, just have someone from his team, bc he's never alone, to get him some pants. Also increasing fines makes no sense for someone like Magnus
I like that idea a lot, because as long as the players aren’t wearing something very immodest there is no reason they can’t play. While that gives FIDE the control that they want. But there should also probably be reform in the requirements themselves. Like I’m sure Nepo’s sport shoes that he got fined on today are much quieter then the acceptable (but loud) dress shoes Alireza wore and got told off on DURING a candidates game.

If a dress code doesn't serve a mechanical purpose it's inappropriate. "The premises deserve respect" - he nailed it there. It's not about respecting the game, or the other players, it's about pageantry and making the organisation feel fancy and important because in the wider world FIDE just doesn't matter. They are irrelevant. So they impose these rules to pomp themselves up. The "no poor people clothes" are entirely out dated, and act as nothing but a barrier for people entering the higher levels of the sport. Get a grip of yourselves. I'd far rather see respect for the players and their skill and allowing them to dress as they like. Give me players in high fashion playing others in dungarees. It should be about the sport, about the game, the clothes should be irrelevant.
I just respected Levy even more after this, he held and navigated this very well. He was adding important perspectives to the situation throughout this.
The argument „it was decided by players“ has the same taste as someone advertising gambling by playing it on stream, but saying „i didn‘t explicitly tell them to gamble“.. Overall, for an outsider like me this just looks like chess is not as important as what people look like. In general, one would think that issues like this will be adressed after the day, not during the games are going. The players need to stay concentrated on the games after all. Anything else would surely affect the chess. It‘s funny to see that in chess tournaments, the aim is not the best possible chess but a lot of other irrelevant things, like dress code, publicity and so on.. Also, this is a company. Things like „we 100% support the decision“ is meaningless, as of course they need to say this.
what if Magnus didn't have other trousers in his room? dude assumes that magnus can go to his room and change his pants, but how does he know if he has not jeans in his room????
As a casual chess watcher, this seems ridiculous. Even tennis players don't love the dress codes and I've watched tennis all my life. Also, dress codes may seem innocuous but to some degree it reinforces an invisible form of violence, especially with what they expect women to wear in these types of events. Magnus' jeans (and whatever others were wearing) at the end of the day are not distracting or taking away from the grandeur of the event. We don't give a f***. And I could say I'm distracted by your poor posture Mr CEO.
rules are rules, they don't let tennis players wear whatever they want in Wimbledon. They gave him and other players multiple chances to change, he was the only one who refused.
Oh shut up, what “violence” can this reinforce? A dress code is violence? Somehow you managed to make MALE dress code into an attack against women. FIDE is well within their rights to want to uphold a certain image associated with them and their events. Do I fully agree with how this went down? I’m not sure. But this is NOT about women. Not everything is about women. Y’all need to learn to interact with happenings without making yourselves the center of it.

This is a joke. You (FIDE) managed to get him out of classical chess and now you got him out of rapid and blitz. This is the most ridiculous thing that happened since the Karpovmanes era.
Magnus is washed he's too weak to admit it. So he pulled out and got himself banned here. He is a washed loser. Keep drinking the coolaid clown
He got out of classical chess because he says that weaker players can cover by memorizing theory but its actually him who struggles against new lines. Chess960 is proof of that(13.5-2.5 loss against wesley so is humongous). He was losing rating points and wanted to be eternally 2800. He stopped playing classical thus. Now he throws tantrums over a thing that can be managed easily when being warned multiple times. If it is a rule you have agreed to play upon, abide by it. As simple as that. But fans worship him. Magnus did the right thing. Without the biggest chess star, FIDE's tournaments will probably not be very exciting. FIDE's decision here is a disaster for them. Freestyle chess will take over, FIDE will fade away

It's like a referee sending Messi off the field, saying it's not a disqualification, just for wearing the wrong style of boots, and then the FIFA president explaining how much they are doing for football and that this decision is actually aimed at improving all the wonderful things they want to build.
no, that's like Messi getting his shirt torn in a play, the rules say you can't play with a torn shirt, then the arbiter tells him to go to the bench and change shirts, he gets angry a nd leaves the game.
Terrible example because boots make a huge diff in football and that's the refs job lol. But if it was because messi had some unapproved hear style the metaphor makes sense.

I laughed when he mentioned tennis and dress code.
The only tournament that has a dress code is Wimbledon, and that rule is that you haft to wear white.
Nadal experimented with this where he wore both white tank top (shirt without sleeves) and shorts over knees. This was fine and Wimbledon probably cleared out the rules for the future.
But afaik, tennis is casual when it comes to dress code.
rules are rules, you cannot debate the rules while the tournament is going on, only before or after it, magnus is not special in the eyes of the arbiter who follows the rules all players agreed on before they signed to play in the tournament.
@@vik24oct1991: Alex literally just wrote that Nadal expetimented with the rules in Wimbledon, which basically is the same as debating the rules while playing...
Wimbledon is the strictest, but other tennis Grand Slams do have a dress code. For example, "Sweatshirts, gym shorts, dress shirts, T-shirts or any other inappropriate attire shall not be worn during a match (including the warm-up)."
y'all dont know about Serena Williams getting in trouble for wearing a catsuit after her pregnancy?!
every sport has a dress code. i'm puzzled how you guys just now find out that there is such a thing. In tennis, in football, volleyball, handball, everywhere there are rules in regards to how you can dress.
Look at 50% of the other players trousers and tell me this rule isn’t stupid. The code is made for the players to look presentable. It was seconds after magnus’s case decided that another player in light blue worn out pants that was designed to look like worn out jeans was following the code. So all this drama came from magnus having the wrong fabric on his pants…
i thought chess was about chess, not about how players dress... it's pretentious and pathetic, and these people are losers
True, not to mention, as Levy said and as Emil seconded, that FIDE does not even enforce the dress code for players not shown on camera, like the 300th seeded player.

Ian changed. FIDE's hands were tied.
It's not about dress code. The players are venting financial grievances by making planned drama. The whole stuff is kind of stupid.

This guy gives me a "you are all my subjects" kind of vibe.
Why would I watch a FIDE event if the best player doesn't take part.

@ well, it was legal to own sl@ves, so...laws are wishy washy to me
Oh shut up, what “violence” can this reinforce? A dress code is violence? Somehow you managed to make MALE dress code into an attack against women.
