Porsche, the famous german car maker, is looking for carbon neutral fuels to keeping the combustion engine alive far into the future. Lipids extracted from Diatoms might be one of the sources for this carbon neutral fuel. Diatoms might become the "fossil fuel" of the future. The Freshwater Diatom Pinnularia socialis is a hot candidate. It has a massive lipid content per cell and is easy to grow. This is the story of Diatom Biofuels.

Not profitable per se... but it would be an energy source not competing directly with food production.
