I recently replied with this comment on another vid, but it would be better suited here: I was inspired by your GSI cook kit, and built one last weekend, combining Trangia,GSI minimalist and a 4" tall X 4" Diameter aluminum duct pipe as a wind screen. Wraps perfectly around the cup. Used stainless chopsticks through the windscreen as a stand, and punched a few air holes in around the bottom perimeter.
When I was growing up in the early part of the 70's, over here in the UK, we had a lot of union activate with strikes etc and the affects of a three day week would be power cuts for every home in the country, this homemade alcohol stove reminders me of the larger types my uncle made to heat my cousins baby formula.
What are the specs on that stainless foil? The great thing about McMaster is they have an endless section...which is also their problem. Any changes you'd make from the original design? Also, love the Longhouse series. Great practical pointers!
Evan great cooking set I use the same what bottles are you using to carry the alcohol? are the 1oz Nalgene? thanks for the upload more videos like this please..
+Arkansas Hillbilly They're nalgene. Kind of thought they were 2oz, but could easily be 1oz. I searched a long time for a single container in the correct size and shape to go right on top of the burner inside the pot but so far have struck out. Such a container would take half again or twice the amount of fuel that the 4 individual containers do.
+HillPeopleGear Evan I use a similar system, and I've been looking for containers for the fuel. I looked at the Nalgene bottles but Amazon specifically says not for liquid contents. Have you had any problems with them leaking?
HillPeopleGear I use the smallest plastic Coke bottles I can find. guess they are bulkier than those tiny Nalgene, but they are leak proof and very tough.
@@HillPeopleGear try okeef's "tough hands" hand cream containers or Proraso shaving soap containers, they fit about perfect for mine, get a sheet of gasket material to make a seal for them. alternatively, the 5hr energy bottles are similar size/weight to your nalgene bottles, almost impossible to break, and basically free if you've got teenage kids
Do you have any recommendations on mechanisms to keep the screen together that don't require access to a riveting device? I was going to try to make something out of an old MSR Whisperlite stove wind screen that never sees any use.
You might try opposing slots that fit together. On the other hand, a pop rivet tool is like $15. If you've already got a drill, you're not talking about much of an outlay.
Follow-up question: About how far away is your grill from the top of the alcohol stove. I originally built mine to try to avoid the flame climbing up the side of my hallulite, but it seems like it might be altering the boil time slightly.
I love looking at other peoples cook kits. Great ideas

Dude that self made sleeve with bike spokes is AWESOME! Very inspiring.
Do more of these videos, please. Great stuff!
Looks like a great set up for long range elk hunts.

Just when I thought my stove/cook pot addiction had subsided...

.004" - No real changes. It's one of those things where there might be optimizations but it works well enough that nothing has bugged me.
@@HillPeopleGear Thanks!
Take a look at the tatonka rvs one, has a simmer lid on it
yeah my body shuts down when I go camping or hiking so I don't eat a lot of food I might can just run miso soup
