I have been using the Sawyer for donkeys! It’s been so reliable, I won’t go without it anymore. Water storage and carrying is a real nuisance sometimes, never a real problem here in the U.K. but just so bulky and heavy. I do try to ride light with just one bottle of water at times, then load up for a night camp. Of course camping near a mountain river is the ideal, but not always possible. Your vid is just so informative , I do enjoy them. Thank you.
the mesh bag the sawyer squeeze comes in can be used to hang a water bladder upside down, and you can use the sawyer like a gravity filter. Its slow, but you can set it up when you're not doing anything, and it can save you a little time and hassle
So I liked this and I'm glad your bringing a cook system. This is the reason. In the unlikely event your Sawyer fails. You have a water purification backup. I would say that if you want redundancy for fire, bring a light my fire ferro rod. You can light your stove and you can always start an emergency fire and it isn't much weight. Just a thought. Do with it what you like. I'm not totally ultralight just because I like to have some small redundancies. I'm learning a lot from you and keep it up!
Good video, you are very efficient with our time. You cover stuff fast and clear! Great presentation. I did not know that there was a titanium pot with a screw lid. Thanks for the tip on the cargo bot 700.
I picked up a light weight spork today and tried it on lunch today and it worked out well. I have the shorter handle and wider mouth one so unfortunately you will have a clear advantage if we ever have a spork fencing duel.
Smart to break up those videos! Over 100k views per video is awesome! That could have just been one video with 100k but instead it’s 3-4! Nice work! I’m taking notes. Thank you sensei. 🙌 🙏🏕🏕🏕
Subscribed. Love the van build. I followed you for the hiking but I also converted a van. Great job in keeping it simple. I so could use either of the gifts.
Rod Theer I have a CNOC Vecto too and I love it, but I can't get over the taste of the water. I've soaked it in soapy water, scrubbed it several times, but no success. Any recommendations?
I've switched from the BV500 to the BV450 when I switched to a different pack, and I can get about 20,000 calories in the 450. That's a mixture of dehydrated foods, oatmeal, candy bars, electrolyte mixes, energy bars, and some protein shake mixes that I put together from protein powder and Nido at home.
Make sure that you get an extra "O" ring for the BRS. Mine failed during snowstorm number 1. I was able to get it to work by putting Neosporin on the gasket and leaving the stove screwed on the cannister, but I no longer recommend this stove for a long hike for this reason alone. I wish I would have paid the extra $ and bought the Olicamp ion instead.
Hey there buddy great videos keep them coming a great help while we are getting ready for our next hike and also what to wear and what to bring based on where we are going ! Thanks a lot
Good stuff! You will do a complete last minute gear list of all your stuff and total weight right before you leave won't you? Those are my favorite vids
What about a cheap wind screen for the stove? What about a pot cozy? Are they passé in 2018? Thanks for all your videos -- they have made my trips lighter and more comfortable.
You should look into Ursac for your bear canister. Better than clunky plastic and you can just use it as a normal bear bag instead of adding gear or swapping out.
www.ursack.com/ursack-will-be-allowed-almost-everywhere-in-the-sierra-this-year-except-yosemite-national-park/ and www.ursack.com/updates/ Ursack states on their site: Mar 04 2018 8 New Vibranium Ursack Rejected By Yosemite By Ursack | Uncategorized Here it is, folks. The all new, black panther proof, Vibranium Ursack. It has been approved by the Wakanda Bear and Panther Committee, but not by Yosemite, which continues to drag its feet in evaluating and approving the Ursack
Great review , just one quick question , why dose the Bear Container have holes in that will send stored food smells to the open air for bears and critters to smell and find ? Why not a complete sealed container ??
Nice video. Just a question. Since you are bringing that gas stove I assume you'll be carrying a propane gas canister. How large? and how much does it weigh?
@ 1:55 where did you get the water bottle holder (netting style) that is on your right shoulder strap? Also who is it made by? I can't find anything like it on line. I am watching your journey on the P.C.T. . Your videos are done really nice. You are a "BEAST!" 👍🍺🇺🇸 G.J. from Phx. Az.
What's you opinion on the micro squeeze over the regular squeeze? And how is the Cnoc 2L filler bag holding up? Thanks for all your work you put in on this channel!
Is that luan used in the van for walls? Love all the information you share. I'm 58 and want to go on the Appalachian trail. Thanks again and enjoy your hike
Love the videos Darwin. Can you do me a favour please? At some point on the trail tomorrow, stop, close your eyes, listen to the sounds, breathe in the fresh mountain air and say to yourself 'I'm here, now, living it!'. In these moments we are the richest of men! (and women, of course). Preach over ; )
Are you taking fuel from the start, or just picking it up if you feel the need? One of those small canisters wouldn't add THAT much weight, and still give you the option of hot coffee or a meal.
Darwin- is the PCT mapped out with respect to water well enough that you would never have to dry camp? They say at least a gallon of water per person per day in the desert. That's like 7.5 liters
You mention the Sawyer Squeeze Mini often, but have you used the Micro? I heard the flow rate is much better than the mini, but the size is better than the regular. Best of both worlds?
I can see the draw $$ of the BRS stove. However, the quality control is bad and over half fail. I've owned two, both broke during use. They are terrible in the wind, so you'll need a wind break of sorts. The simmer control isn't precise and do you notice how close the flame is to the fuel? no thanks. I carry a Soto Amicus stove for an extra ounce and piece of mind. Has been perfect 44 nights tested, thusfar. When you go ultralight try not to skimp on your shelter, sleeping bag or quilt, or your stove. It's not a competition, just sound advice.
How will you refill your fuel canister on the PCT? Do you just buy a whole new can when you get to towns or use the same can and refill it (?refill more cost effective?). Are there ever towns along the trail where it is difficult to find fuel? Thanks in advance! Good luck on the PCT!
Darwin: I’m interested in those lightweight towels. Seems like the link you’ve provided is not the exact same product (different dimensions and weight). Is that correct? Thanks for another great video.
Never have left it before but did forget where exactly we hung it for a few minutes. We got into camp really late and it was dark. Walking around trying to find a good spot and then crashing in the tent. Thought it was in one direction but it was more to the left. Not super far off but still was hunting for it for just a couple of minutes. That’s why I use a bright orange dry bag for food right now. Basically impossible to lose it
Is the Zpack food storage bag animal proof meaning can they smell the food through it? And if it is, why do you have to hang it? Why not leave it in your pack?
Hi Darwin, I was wondering if you have any experience with the Katadyn BeFree water filters and Hydrapak water storage bags? I've been debating whether to purchase the Saywer Squeeze and CNOC bag, or to go with the BeFree and Hydrapak. The concept of the BeFree appeals to me a little more than the Sawyer, but I'm concerned that the super fast flow rate of the BeFree will quickly diminish and not last as long or work as well as the Sawyer. Any thoughts?
What do you use the CCOC thing for? Cause it doesn't attach correctly to water filter? so you've had contaminated water leaking in the whole time? ouchies
Where did you get the water bottle shoulder strap holder that fits the smart water bottle ? I’ve been in need of something long and lean for the Smart water bottles.
Sawyer Products SP150 Coupling for Water Filtration Cleaning--- Get this on Amazon. Weighs nothing, less than $3..... easy backflush your Sawyer filter.
Tailslol In most if not all of California they are considered an open flame since you can’t shut them off instantly which means they are banned since in a lot of places you can’t have fires. Which kinda sucks but at the same time I believe is for the best. I live in SoCal and we are still in drought and there’s been many bad fires here. Most recently we had the Woolsey fire which killed a lot of people. They are still finding bodies and trying to identify remains. Still a lot of people missing, which is really sad and the news basically has stopped covering it.
As a native of SoCal, specifically San Diego County, I'm bewildered by the notion that the first 700 miles of the trail is desert. Is there some popular guide book perpetuating this utter baloney?
I didn't say there isn't a desert in SoCal, in fact, east of the mountains from the border to Washington is mostly desert. What I said is the first 700 miles of the PCT are not desert. Campo is not in a desert, all the way through descending Mount Lauguna, is not desert. You walk across proper desert briefly, in Anza Borrego, until you climb to Warner Springs, which... is not desert. Then you go to all the way to San Jacinto, in chaparral-covered foothills, and oak and pine covered mountains. Only after you drop down to the 74 do you cross a significant amount of actual desert. "Desert" is not a subjective term. Because someplace is less wooded, or mountainous, or lush than another doesn't make it a desert.
Yep, me too. Aside from the higher elevations, which are even less desert. I keep seeing videos of people standing in head-high chaparral, with a couple oak trees and ankle-deep grass saying, "This isn't what I expected from the desert." Yeah, no kidding, there's an excellent reason for that. I think telling all these people the first 700 miles is desert psychs them out a little. Unnecessarily.
Beth Ratkewicz, no need to in N.America, filtering with the Sawyer Mini removes anything of concern. Maybe in other (hot) countries where virii can survive in water courses, you would take further steps.

It's a super cheap and light-weight water container, what's not to like about that? No reason to go spend $20 on a bottle that weighs more and does the exact same job.
They are cheap, tough, and readily available. Hikers like them because they are thin, giving the option to put more than one in their packs side pockets.
I can’t remember. Have you tried the Be Free? I got one a while back and really like it for the flow rate. The problem is the thread size and that’s why I think everyone hasn’t jumped over yet. Cnoc kinda posted a teaser pic on Instagram a little bit ago hinting they were gonna drop bags to fit it 🤷🏻♂️

Hey for those Wondering what the blue peice on the water filter is it is a sawyer inline hydration pack adapter they are about 6 USD on Amazon
My Sawyer Squeeze came with one of those in the bag, so you shouldn't need to buy it separately.
Thank you for including metric units!
Thnx for metric units

the mesh bag the sawyer squeeze comes in can be used to hang a water bladder upside down, and you can use the sawyer like a gravity filter. Its slow, but you can set it up when you're not doing anything, and it can save you a little time and hassle
Also picked up a couple of cuben fiber drybags. I like that they are translucent and can see what is inside of each of them.
I have a friend from here in Canada that was heading out to start the PCT Trail yesterday. Sure sounds like a great adventure.
So I liked this and I'm glad your bringing a cook system. This is the reason. In the unlikely event your Sawyer fails. You have a water purification backup. 5L seems like a good size, and is what several PCT hikers told me they had.
Smart Water bottles are the bomb

Thanks for the info! Acquiring gear this year and the tips help so I’m not wasting money on stupid unnecessary items.
Subscribed. Love the van build. I followed you for the hiking but I also converted a van. Great job in keeping it simple. I so could use either of the gifts.
I love my BRS stove, i see they have gone up in price but are still worth it. They nest very well.
CNOC Vecto...they are fantastic! If anyone does not have these, invest in them!
Rod Theer I have a CNOC Vecto too and I love it, but I can't get over the taste of the water. I've soaked it in soapy water, scrubbed it several times, but no success. Any recommendations?
MyraHart are you filtering into a water bottle out of it?
your Idea of the cook set is what I have when I go on the AT. Just got to have something cooked every once in awhile. Love both your set-ups.
I've switched from the BV500 to the BV450 when I switched to a different pack, and I can get about 20,000 calories in the 450. I just binge watched like 10 of your videos. Great content! You make me want to go out and hike!
did you do it?
I'm still rockin' my Sweetwater pump filter. Yeah...I'm old school...just like my dope rhymes.
Make sure that you get an extra "O" ring for the BRS. Mine failed during snowstorm number 1. For cooking and water containment
One can't go wrong with a simple cheap reliable Old school USGI stainless steel canteen kit
good to see you use something like the brs stove. got mine a week ago and always wondered you you never used them on hike in videos
I know you're on the PCT already, from Instagram. Wish you the best, Darwin.
What? He is? Get out...I thought it was at least 10 days away...Hmm...
Also, found out the hard way, the sawyer squeeze mini won't screw on the CNOC bag and stay on for some reason!
Good stuff! You will do a complete last minute gear list of all your stuff and total weight right before you leave won't you? Those are my favorite vids
Good job bro.. love your things. Keep inspiring people.. 👊
I prefer the cold soak + warm technique which saves on fuel.
Am I wrong? I'm getting a total weight of 19.8oz for everything.

What's you opinion on the micro squeeze over the regular squeeze? And how is the Cnoc 2L filler bag holding up? Thanks for all your work you put in on this channel!
I carry qty 2 of the 2L platypus bag and a small katadyn be free. Over 4.5L carrying capacity. Lightest I've found.
I'd like to add that, through my own experience, the Talenti jars are not dishwasher safe!
Is that luan used in the van for walls? Love all the information you share. I'm 58 and want to go on the Appalachian trail. Thanks again and enjoy your hike
I wonder if you can reuse smart water bottle multiple times since it’s plastic?
Do people recycle their gan canisters on the trail when possible? Do they use a puncture tool?
Fuckin love this channel. Happy trails brotha
Good info.
Hey Darwin! Where did you get the smart water bottles with those fancy caps? Do they come like that or were the caps sourced from somewhere else?😎😎
essentia 750ml sporty bottles
Where did you get the blue attachment on your Sawyer, that connects to a Smart water bottle sport cap?

Hi Darwin, good job with your videos! I just want to ask why you choose canister stove over alcool stove.
Thanks for your work, keep going!
It is obligatory the "Canister Bear"? They authorized the Zpacks bear bagging kit? Thank you for your vidéos.
Do you put a purifying tablet after running it through your filter or are you good going straight through?

Have you ever accidentally hiked away with your food still in a tree?
melting mosberg I haven’t yet begun backpacking but boyyy does that sound like something I’m going to do
One time I did, but I was only about a fourth of a mile away lol
Never have left it before but did forget where exactly we hung it for a few minutes. We got into camp really late and it was dark. How do the smart water bottles hold up in cold weather?
Hi Darwin, I was wondering if you have any experience with the Katadyn BeFree water filters and Hydrapak water storage bags? Am I supposed to hang my food on a tree away from bears or raccoons starting mile 1? What if there’s no tree
Awesome video
Did they stop making the 2L CNOC bag?
What do you use the CCOC thing for? Cause it doesn't attach correctly to water filter? so you've had contaminated water leaking in the whole time? ouchies
Darwin Love the Videos. Question, how do you utilize the bear bag in areas where trees are limited, such as the desert.
There aren't many bears in the desert. What some backpackers do is use an odor-proof Opsak inside their food bag and sleep with it
What about stove Fuel? What type and how much will be carried?
Where did you get that blue tip for your Sawyer also would that backwashing system work on the Sawyer mini
Where did you get the water bottle shoulder strap holder that fits the smart water bottle ? I’ve been in need of something long and lean for the Smart water bottles.

Zpack carabiner? If you are shaving grams, why not tie a knot and lose the 'biner?
Do you have a link to the shoulder strap water bottle holder? Would you know if it’s compatible with the ula ohm backpack? Thank you 😋
Is there any particular place or other water bottles that I can get ahold of those Sports caps for the smart water?
As a native of SoCal, specifically San Diego County, I'm bewildered by the notion that the first 700 miles of the trail is desert. Is there some popular guide book perpetuating this utter baloney?
I didn't say there isn't a desert in SoCal, in fact, east of the mountains from the border to Washington is mostly desert. What I said is the first 700 miles of the PCT are not desert. Thanks for the vid. My math is off though. 9.6oz for just water storage... yet you say the whole set up with the BOT is under 11 oz.
Eric Martinez the bot was part of his cook set, waterstorage was just the smart boddles and the bladder
Jackson Pippert.... he says everything comes in at 10.4 oz at the end of the vid.
Do you use any odor proof liner bag for the bear bag or is the bag itself sufficient?
Preeettty groovy
can someone tell me what are those 3 water bottles? No link in description
Funny.... I use 3-4 lighters on the trail in Colorado.
First! Hi from Holland, thanks for sharing
Nice informative video 👍
Let me get this straight. You only filter your water even in the desert? What about diseases? Doncha need to boil the water too to be safe?
Beth Ratkewicz, no need to in N.America, filtering with the Sawyer Mini removes anything of concern. Maybe in other (hot) countries where virii can survive in water courses, you would take further steps.
What does the 700 stand for on the cook pots?
What are your thoughts on the solo stove
What’s the weight of the fuel canister?
hi from philippines
This may seem like a silly question but hey, I am an Aussie so..... Smart water bottles. I take it theyre just a bottle of water u pick up from a convenience store? Or is it a particular type of bottle? I only ask because i search smart water bottle and come up with a million different options except the 1 i need lol. TIA m8.
G'day The Hillbilly Homestead. Just go to Coles or Woolies. Any water/mineral water bottle that is 75-78mm in diameter is the same as a SmartWater bottle. They also fit in the bottle cage on your bike.
Scott Clarke thx m8
👍
Food bag not bear???
Hey Darwin how long do you have to Carrie bear canister
Ghost Seven In the Sierra's and Yosemite. Where there are a lot of bears and bear encounters. It's for the safety of people and bears.
what is that shoulder strap carry system for the water bottle?
also keen to know the answer to this!
The Z-Packs and the ULA (don’t know about others) have elastic straps the conch around the neck and mid-way around the bottle. It’s very convenient.
Devin Hedge that's great but that's not what he's using in the video.
I'd really like to know what both of those shoulder pouches are. I have the exact same backpack and I've been debating whether or not I want shoulder pouches.
The zpacks shoulder pouch is great but I'd prioritize the belt pouches first and then determine if you need a shoulder pouch. The belt pouches are indispensable, imo.
Your math isn’t so great Darwin! Your entire water and cook system is more like 20 ounces. 😉
Why on every video American hiker use Smartwater? I don't get it...
It's a super cheap and light-weight water container, what's not to like about that? No reason to go spend $20 on a bottle that weighs more and does the exact same job.
They are cheap, tough, and readily available. Hikers like them because they are thin, giving the option to put more than one in their packs side pockets.
I didn't ask why an american hikers use water bottles - but why only Smartwater? Is that only brend of water in the USA? 😎
How much does the water system weigh with water inside?
adrian carrillo 2 pounds roughly per liter. plus he weighed his gear at 10.4 oz. so at full carrying capacity 10 lbs and 10.4 oz give or take.
So even with a base weight of say 10lbs, you add water and food that's another at least 15lbs, which means your overall weight on your back is 25lbs.
I can’t remember. Have you tried the Be Free? I got one a while back and really like it for the flow rate. The problem is the thread size and that’s why I think everyone hasn’t jumped over yet. Cnoc kinda posted a teaser pic on Instagram a little bit ago hinting they were gonna drop bags to fit it 🤷🏻♂️
Spoiler alert: RIP the spork :(
